  • Compilation of footage from snorkeling at Tunnels Beach that I captured in June 2016. Tunnels has some of the largest coral colonies that I saw on the island, along with schools of unicorn tangs. I arrived at around 6:30 am before the currents got to strong. By early afternoon, the currents were too strong to snorkel comfortably. This was shot with a GoPro Hero 4 Silver and edited via GoPro Studio.

Very similar to what I saw today (09/18) at Anini and yesterday at Hideaways beach, two of the top rated snorkeling beaches on Kauai - dead and/or dying coral everywhere I snorkeled, even going out 100 to 200 yards offshore. Saw one, yes one, small coral that looked moderately alive. Gray, brown or puke-green color to everything else I saw. Few fish, turtle I saw looked very unhealthy. Very sad but it looks like Kauai has lost a great deal of it’s coral reefs. To top it off, back on shore at the boat dock, a large snorkeling tour boat churned up so much muck and debris that you could not see your hand at arms length. Reefs are dead or dying but lets continue business as usual. Very sad.

    Was this during low tide?

I think so, it was first thing as the sun was just coming up. After a bit when the tide comes in, there are strong, dangerous riptides.
