In the books, after he tosses away his sword and leaves the throne room, Joffery orders that he be detained and his guards run after Barristan. Barristan, while unarmed, manages to fend off all his pursuers and escape the city.

He’s still alive in the books too. It’s a crime the show killed him off so early because his POV chapters are getting pretty damn interesting.
The showrunners D&D actually laughed like the people in this scene when the actor told them how bad of an idea it would be to kill his character off. These were the first signs that the quality of the writing was starting to decline ever so slowly as it began veering even further away from the source material.

Every single second Tywin was gone off to Casterly rock cersei was spinning kingslanding into the grown. He was so pissed when he returned back and found out that Barristan had been forcibly retired and joined Danny. I doubt even Jamie agreed with the decision for him to replace Barristan, as he knew just how much of a legend he was and has respected him all throughout his childhood

You can actually see the Hound's smile drop when Barristan moves to draw his sword. Goes to show that Selmy's threat wasn't empty. He really could cut through the five of them with ease.
the hound is pretty smart for what he is like people underestimate his intelligence but he knows who he can take and who he can't same as bronn so he knows selmy would take all of the guard and could probs beat him head on.

I love the subtle moment where the Hound puts his hand on his sword but is the only one who doesnt draw. Hes the only one who MIGHT stand a chance, both he and Selmy know it, but Sandor has no interest in finding out so chooses not to antagonise the old man with yet an another drawn sword.
Almost like Sandor is acknowledging "Yes you will cut through these 5 dickheads like a cake and yes i will have no choice but to step in and while i might beat you, i also might not so can we please avoid hostility because i need to kill my brother before i die" 😂
Sandor was always smart when it came to fights he knew when he had a easy day or a test of his metal ahead of him it's the reason he always survived even in fights with equals or betters because he knew he had limits and knew when to avoid testing them.

It is not shown in this sequence but even the Hounds put a hand on his sword. Even the strong and brutal Hound understood that the old man was definitely a threat
Also the hound was stood behind the other Kingsguard, meaning he fully expected Ser Barristan to get through all of them.

The fact that the throne is only made from the swords of defeated lords and kings speaks volumes to his station and skill if he a knight of the kingsguard could so blatantly threaten and put everyone against him in that room in their place, by reminding them that his sword is worthy enough to be added to the throne.
I've always interpreted as ssomething like "I hereby declare myself an enemy of the throne", since those defeated lords and knights where defeated enemies in the conquer after all!
the big moment to the scene was him reminding them that despite their words to demean him, all he had to do was draw his sword to remind people actions matter more than words, he had the power to change a nation by simply drawing his sword and killing the king...

Barristan is an amazing character.
Super underrated part of this scene is how slowly the hound puts his hand on his sword. He's the only one who didn't draw on him because he knew his chances of winning that were near zero

Robert Baratheon
Ned stark
And so on.
In the books Robert actually lets him live even tho he fought for the Targaryen’s only because how good of a fighter he was.
