    Your plants look so healthy. You have certainly set up a system that works well. More good news: your seed selection arrived in my mailbox today. I can’t wait to start these seeds and enjoy Roxana’s flowers in my summer garden!

    Hi, friend! My set up is very similar to yours. I had to remove the lights and shelves from the second shelf because my tomatoes always grow too tall before they go outside. I just lower the lights on the chains from the top shelf and then raise them as soon as the tomatoes grow taller, and then I pray the warm weather comes before they touch the lights at the highest link of the chain.😆

      So my tomatoes take up two shelves when they get too tall for the first shelf.

    I ran out of room too couple weeks ago and had to move some of my hardier seedlings outside, into one of those inexpensive pop up greenhouses. Our night temps are still in low 30s, but the seedlings have been doing okay out there.

    Wow, how interesting starting your gladioli corms in water! Would’ve thought that this would cause them to rot, since bulbs are famed for hating sitting in the wet. I look forward to seeing how these do ❤

    Beautiful Seedling room setup! Great tip to use trays for the seedlings since some seedlings grow at different heights. I hope your dahlias turn out beautiful! I just bought a bag from Walmart and hope they grow. TFS!

    I'm so glad to report that the 4 Perennial Flower types that I gave the 24 hr Freeze Method to are all showing signs of life. Rose of Sharon seeds are very old. I only have 1 up so far (but I think there will be more). Then a Purple Orb Allium (older seed) only 1 so far. Delphinium (Fav. 2 yr, old seed) I'm excited to see a couple! And Winkie Double (related to Columbines) New saved seed- more than a dozen!!! Maybe even 2 dozen. I might try 2 day freeze on my older seed. AND I would love to try this with Rose seeds!- My Nemesis. I've tried everything! But I'm excited that I have at least 1 of everything. It was a shot in the dark for me! So- Thank you for the tip!

    I have run out of room on my plant rack too but I only have one and though I need two I am resisting putting in the extra for some reason. But, and this is huge for me, our temps are supposed to be milder now so I can move many of the hardier trays of plants out to the greenhouse, even the dahlias that I am sprouting to take cuttings from. This will free up space to start many more warm-weather things. YAY. Your grow room is gorgeous and you are correct, the heat is a big factor on seedlings doing well along with the lights. You could have the lights but without the heat the seedlings would just be slower to grow and not get as stocky, at least that is something I have noted over the years. Our last frost date is the end of May so I have some time to go yet.

    I ordered some tubers from long field and they weren’t good shape but every tube was sprouted. The only problem was that the cafe Au lait flower color was different it is more like deep pink color . I really enjoy your videos. Good luck with your tubers😅

    I didn’t realize I can start my gladiolus indoors. I bought just 6 of them to experiment since I’ve never grown them before and I want to see if I like them. I’m guessing I am probably 2 weeks behind you so maybe I’ll start mine in a couple weeks and fingers crossed they will do well.

    You are the first person I have heard of that pre-sprouts their gladiolus. I was also considering doing it. I was just going to put them in potting soil. Maybe I'll try it your way instead. I do my dahlias. Bonny zone 5b

      You can do it in soil too! This way having all of them together in one small container works for me, or try 2 different ways to see which one you like better.

    I pre-sprouted my glads for the first time last year. It was so easy and it worked very well. I planted them in just about 3 inches of soil and then planted deeper when I put in my raised beds. It really gave me a head start on my season

    Thanks for sharing your grow studio! Love it! I’m so behind just started cleaning up outside. I really think next year I’m going to clean in November instead- weeds didn’t really die off, we had cold spells but not any hard freezes (zone 6B) , so now those weeds are much bigger than usual this time of the year.

    So glad to hear from you! Concerned with all the storms going through our area.
    My frost date is May 13th. This week I had to take the flats out to GH this week. So happy! I needed space also as I’m just starting tomatoes and sweet and hot peppers.
    We just got chicks Tuesday and very busy.
    Sorry commenting while listening. Between watching the of chicks and greenhouse we are on call till we get through the next couple of cold nights. I have one chick with splayed leg rehabbing inside. Hope we can fix it. She’s listeto Spring Peepers CD😂.
    Plants look great! Hope you have a small greenhouse, but you will probably plant out not too far from now.
    I think Longfield supplies Costco with plants? I don’t have root cellar yet, but I had to have some canna bulbs as it reminds me of when dad and I use to plant them. I was drooling looking at all the bulbs, but I’m wondering where to store these and all the dahlias I’m growing from seed if I like them.

      Yes they are! Scary. We in WI only had some problems in lower part of state, but not as bad as some. We are a bit more north. I was biting my nails as we don’t have a storm shelter yet and with prices the way they are not sure when it will happen.

    Do you have space to extend your garden? I had to chuckle because of all the seeds that I start or buy and then wonder where to put all the plants! Wish the temperatures would rise. I received a few ordered potted plants in the mail, but the night tems are still too cold to put them outsede in my zone 5-6 (Still 40% chance of frost). If they die before I can get them out I've lost a lot of money! Oh dear! What we devoted gardeners must go through! (lol)

    Beautiful grow room! Be careful with putting pre-sprouting bulbs right next to your precious seedlings. I had some corms and tubers from local stores (also in central indiana) in my grow room and ended up with thrips on my seedlings :(. I had sterilized my seed starting mix with boiling water so pretty sure it was the bulbs. I will keep them separate from now on.

    I don’t think I’ll be ordering tubers from Longfield again. Almost all of the tubers I received had broken necks. Some could be salvaged, but they were very small for the price. I requested a replacements for two of them. One of them they have to replace with something they had left. Also I placed my order last Fall but didn’t get my order till a couple of weeks ago, which means the ranunculus I ordered came too late.

    • @SoilandMargaritas
      @SoilandMargaritas  Рік тому

      That was my problem with ranunculus earlier in the year, everyone was shipping super late for me to start them. This is the first time I order from Longfield, as long as I get a sprout from each crown I will be happy, but honestly, I am more concerned with getting the true dahlias that I ordered. Fingers crossed!

    Roxanna, can you clarify something for me re: frost dates. You say your “last frost date” is April 25th in Zone 5. Is that your last “average” frost date? Meaning there’s still a 50% chance you could get frost…right?
    I’m in Zone 6B. According to the Farmers Almanac, our last frost date is April 17th, but that date represents the last “average” frost date, meaning there’s still a 50% chance we could get frost. The USDA Hardiness Map for Zone 6B indicates our “last” frost date - when the possibility of frost drops to 10% - is May 15th.
    Here’s my question: Do you plant your seedlings outdoors in April, or do you wait until May when all danger of frost has passed? Thanks so much! 🌱💚

    • @SoilandMargaritas
      @SoilandMargaritas  Рік тому +1

      Hi Martha, so that April 25th date for me is my average last frost date for where I live, it is just a guide for me and not a true date for when I am safe taking all of my seedlings outside. I definitely wait longer than that to get everything outside. Normally the first week in May, but sometimes even the second week, it’s just going to depend on the weather for that year.
