I love how the first time we see Ozai's face (in the show), is also the first time Zuko sees his father after his banishment. We followed Zuko's journey along with him.
I liked the earlier reveal of Ozai in the Netflix's live action. It allowed for some insight and interactions you don't get in the cartoon. To have him shadows for 3 live action seasons would've been awkward and cheesy. It works in a cartoon but not real life for me anyway.
I love how Katara's scene with Hakoda is contrasted with Zuko's scene with Ozai. On one side, we see a father who can see his daughter is in pain and does his best to comfort her and assure her he loves her and her brother no matter what, and the daughter feels safe enough to be emotionally open with him. On the other side, we see a father coldly welcoming his son back home, not giving him the apology he owes him and says he's only proud *because* he did things that only advantage him, and the son is clearly too scared to talk back beyond "Hello" and "Thank you."
I love Ozai's face reveal. For two seasons, he was faceless, mysterious and unseen. You assume he looks like a hideous, terrifying fiend. Then you look at him and he's actually a normal, handsome-looking man. It's so scary because that reminds you that sometimes, people who look the least dangerous are the most monstrous.
Sure, you could read this as good writing and built up (as you should), but I just see a massive "the hottest guy in the fire nation is the hottest guy in the fire nation"-joke.
Katara's scene with her dad gets me every time. Because she's usually the most mature member of the group, it's easy to forget she's 14. She herself admits she doesn't understand why she's still angry at him even when she knows why he left. But she nevertheless has those feelings of anger. This show does such a good job at humanizing its characters.
Honestly, now that I think of it, Katara stepped into the parental role pretty quickly after her mom died. She took on all this responsibility so quickly and I don't think she was ever able to grieve her mom properly because of it. Which is why all of this affects Katara so much more than it affects Sokka. Not to mention she probably felt very guilty about her moms death since she was the last to see her alive. Thats a lot for a kid to deal with especially without her father present so I understand her anger (despite her still being understanding)
As a 11yr old girl, i cried watching Katara speak with her father. My dad is military and i carried so much resentment and anger as a child without understanding why and seeinf Katara figure it out with her dad was a huge, monumental moment for my own personal growth. I realized the anger i thought i had for my dad wasnt actually for him. I realized i was actually sad and missed him so badly that my body didnt know what to do with it other than turn it to anger and push people away. As a kid i was convinced i didnt need friends bc we wouldnt simply move again and id never see them so i secluded myself. Kataras character arc was a massive aid to me as a lonely child. Like a guide for my own emotions Edit: and as an adult fan of the show, I'm so relieved and greatful to finally find youtubers who recognize her strength instead of villanizing her for being a little girl with big emotions and too much responsibility. Too many people straight up villainize Katara bc she had a crush on Jet or butts heads with Toph or "bosses people around" instead of understanding her position in her Tribe and in Team Avatar
Poor Carlie. She loves Iroh so much that she subconsciously tricked herself with fake memories of him getting away from the Book 2 confrontation so he'd be considered "On the run" instead of "Most definitely in jail" in her mind.
Very underrated moment with katara and her dad that not many people remember but whenever i rewatch it always gets me emotional. Mae Whitmans voice acting is peak
I get so sad when people don’t point out the VA in this show bc it’s amazing, but that scene with Katara and her Dad is some of the best ever! These two are always on top of stuff like that, they’re great!
9:25 Aang " I need my honor back"... After that scene, We saw Zuko's half face... What a mirroring :)) "I need my honor back" was Zuko's motto.. Now Aang..

I only noticed it re-watching with you two: When Aang is upset and he says “I need to get my honor back” it’s once again paralleling Zuko’s journey with Aang and Zuko swapping spots now that Zuko “has his honor back” and he’s with his dad.
This episode also demonstrates another way Aang and Zuko are mirrored - their hair. Zuko’s (mostly) shaved head is a symbol of shame over his banishment, whereas Aang’s shaved head is a symbol of pride for his culture. When Zuko begins to regrow his hair, it symbolizes the beginning of his redemption journey, whereas Aang’s regrown hair symbolizes his shame over his inability to protect the Earth Kingdom and the fact that the Avatar cycle almost ended.
Been watching this show since it came out, I was 6 years old when I saw boy in the iceberg, I know all the episodes front to back my mom had the DVD collection how tf is there STILL more to realize in this show. This was an epic comment
I think difference in Sokka's and Katara's attitude towards their dad comes from that : Sokka wanted fathers acknowledgment, he was his role model, amazing warrior and inventor. He wanted to be a help of him and simply missed him -they had similar humor and all that. BUT Katara was actually a PARENT in her family. It was harsher on her, because when father left, she stopped being a child and she truly needed someone to take care of her. Sure, they had grandma, but we all know Katara filled in for the role of a mother. And grandma probably needs to be taken for too, since she is elderly woman.
Azula giving Zuko credit for Aang’s apparent death is not purely about setting him up, in my opinion. This moment hints at a complex dynamic between the siblings. Despite Azula's manipulative and controlling nature, it's evident that she has some twisted form of affection for Zuko. Azula's way of caring is rooted in possession and control. She views friends and family as extensions of her power, and Zuko is no exception. In her mind, keeping him close enhances her status and provides her with a controllable ally. This relationship is undeniably toxic and unhealthy, mirroring the broader dysfunction within their family. He is the problem child and she the prodigy, with out him her role is not as secure. While Azula's affection for Zuko is deeply flawed, it is present in a distorted form. She values the role he plays in her life, much like she does with Mai and Ty Lee. There is a comfortable familiarity in their interactions, suggesting that Zuko’s presence holds some personal significance for her. If his world were to collapse, Azula might even protect Zuko, if only to maintain her grip on him. In her own way, she cares for her brother, but it’s a care that’s marred by her need for control and dominance traits instilled in her by her father.
Yes!! Hardly anyone sees it! Azula is crazy and toxic and twisted, and worse because her father has encouraged it all in her, but as much as she is able, she does love her brother. She wants him around.
It is all of that, but it also feels like it's simply her subliminally saying to him "you deal with that now, not my problem, I don't care how, just deal with it."
Did you know there was a lost episode called escape from the spirit world? When aang was unconscious, he was in the spirit world and had to reconnect with the past avatars. Avatar Kyoshi told Aang that it was her who created the dai lee agents to protect ba sing se’s cultural heritage but, she had no idea what they would become
"I didn't just get hurt did I? It was more than that. I was GONE. but you brought me back" Aang literally was dead. Anywhere from 15-20 minutes real time. Then spent several weeks in a coma. His avatar state is completely blocked now. Aang has a whole new journey ahead of him, and it's more than just defeating ozai
@@kairostimeYT from the time he was struck, how long it would have taken iroh to show up and get them enough cover to leave, find and get on appa, get in the air(they were obviously flying and safe distance by the time Katara have him the water). In real time, which can go by fast in times like that, I figure at least 15 minutes
Mae Whitman simply bangs that speech by Katara right out of the park, apparently in a single take! War brutalizes people in many ways, but maybe most because it forces them contort themselves emotionally, to bury anguish that wells up later in life unaddressed. Katara has had to try to bury her feelings of abandonment to meet the needs of her tribe, her brother, and then the Gaang. When faced with them in the form of her father, they surprise her. She can't even acknowledge them at first. It's an unusual moment because there is usually a straight line connecting Katara's values, emotions and actions. And it's resolved so beautifully here.
Holy shit I forgot how goddamn epic this episode was. I got chills at the beginning and then cried when Katara vented to her dad, just like I always do
There's a lot going on in this 23 minutes. Aang died. That kind of damage is an instant kill. In medicine there are two levels of death: Clinical death: Heart stops or lungs stop. The brain may still have 4-6 minutes of nutrients and oxygen left in the tank. Start CPR and call 911. Or, use special spirit water if you are a master water bender. If no help it proceeds to biological death. Biological death: Brain death. No coming back from that. Aang was clinically dead. But, his brain had a few precious moments. Katara was able to heal his broken body enough to get him going again. Hence, Aang saying he was gone and she brought him back. Also, I think Aang was trying to kill himself via a confrontation with Ozai when he ran off. He knew he had no chance of beating anyone. Like some suicidal people he thought he was a complete failure and his death would be better for everyone. If he dies he'll be reborn in the water tribe. They are able to still fight off the Fire Nation. So, in a couple of decades maybe that Avatar can fix things. This is a pretty dark episode in so many ways.
I think people forget sometimes thatJet's fears about fire nation soldiers coming to Ba Sing Se in disguises turned out to be absoluetly TRUE. He wasn't even mistaken on Zuko when you look at his final decision to join Azula in the end.
I always loved the scenes where Katara acts her age, cause it's easy to forget she's only like, 14. She had to grow up so fast but in the very first episode of the series we see Aang reminding her that she's still a kid. And here we get to see her feel complicated things and not understand why despite knowing the circumstances. As someone who's had to take on a lot of responsibility and sacrifice his time- I guess I just appreciate seeing that kind of thing.
I think people forget that when they lost their mom, and then their dad left, Katara had to take on the role of Mother to her older Brother, while Sokka got to pretend soldier with very little actual responsibilities for the tribe.
I agree and disagree. Sokka did his part as well as Katara. And, it shouldn't be downplayed. He helped keep them safe, clothed, sheltered, and fed. Who do you think was doing the hunting and fishing? Who acquired the skins and fur they all wore? Sokka and Katara kept the tribe together.
That's what makes this show so great. Yes they're kids but their feelings are so complex and understandable. The writers really understood their characters and fleshed them out in a way I've never seen in another show. Since book 2 and especially in book 3, I think moments that include Katara are the strongest. Her calming down Aang in the desert, her scene with her dad and three or four upcoming scenes that I don't want to spoil really touch my heart. Most people like Zuko, Iroh or Toph the most. I think Katara is the best
If you remember in The Earth King, Sokka proposes that he stay with the King and Katara go and see their dad....but Katara refuses and offers to switch places so Sokka can see Hakoda. Sokka is overjoyed of course, but this is a marked change in Katara's enthusiasm. She wasn't ready to see him.
The strongest season opening episode ever. It sets the tone, pace, and overall emotion of season 3. You ACTUALLY feel the panic, the anxiety, and desperation knowing what's to come. Yet you get just enough of the love and bond the gaang still has. It gets better, or worse. Depending on how you view it.
Oh yeah, Book 3, let's go! I really enjoyed y'alls reactions to how this season starts off, with the shock of Aang having hair and just the overall different feel of things. That scene with Katara and her dad always gets me, especially becauae of Mae Whitman's fantastic voice acting. I can't wait for more Book 3 reactions from you guys!
"So she was just saving her own ass" Most likely not. Azula has no way to know Aang is still alive, she knows a bolt through the heart means death. Zuko only has doubts now because he knows of the water. Azula always think about herself first and protect herself first, but she did genuinely try to help Zuko here. She just followed Zuko's line of thinking to its logical conclusion, and most likely she did notice how rattled he was so now she's suspicious but I doubt she did it for that purpose or that she was suspicious before this interaction, or at least not for that purpose *only*. She wouldn't avoid taking credit because of the vague possibility that he somehow had miracle healing water.
yeah, the third season has a bit of a different feel than the first two. but i think its one of the most consistently great seasons of tv! sooo many crazy good moments.
imo i think azula gave zuko credit for killing aang because she knew that he survived somehow, she knew that zuko was lying to cover his ass. azula is obsessed with being perfect and if she failed in killing aang, she'd probably think her father would turn on her and start to treat her like he treated zuko. so she told ozai that zuko killed aang so she wouldn't have to deal with the backlash of failing.
Are you guys planning on do Korra after ATLA is finished? it would be pretty cool since the animation is better and dispite some thinhs fans say it is a good show (korra is the avatar that comes after Aang, if you don't know)
One thing I just realised that could have happened. Katara could have healed Zuko's face and then Zuko still betrays the group and she doesn't have the water to heal aang.
That thought has been living in my head rent-free for years. She came so close to wasting that water trying to make Zuko feel better when he wasn't even committed to doing the right thing yet, and then they would have lost Aang, the Avatar, and the war for nothing. Imagine how Katara would have felt. I'm sure there's an epic AU fanfic out there somewhere telling the story of what happens next.

Gotta love how the Zutara ambition still runs strong 2:50
Still love that scene where the old ladies introduce Azula & Zuko. Pure Chills!
mai is perfect for zuko. i love mai
Wow I'm right on timeee
FINALLY AT SEASON 3 LETS GOOOOO
the switch between Zuko and Aang when the former talk about regaining honour in book 1 and latter in book 3
seeing Aang with hair was the best part of this season but he looks better bald
New intro nice ✨
You guys ready for Aang to face off against Luke Skywalker?
I love how he starts with a fairly normal and TO ME unrecognisable voice. But as soon as Ozai needs to be evil. He just turns into Joker
So ready for book 3
11:16 I'm with Carli here. Keep Iroh's name out of your mouth, ozai. You have no right speaking his name after having his birthright revoked 🤬🤬
13:08....proof he's changed so much. Old Aang just avatar'ed and froze himself last time he was in that situation.
Mark Hamill did such a great job as Firelord Ozai
Guys love your reaction.. This season will be best compare the other seasons.. Believe me.. You're gonna love it
Mae Whitman (Katara) is a fantastic and prolific actor.
You guys should also start watching Dungeon Meshi
Finally, my favorite third part❤
Great episode! cant wait for y´all to see the rest of this book! :)
Aang actually did die, he himself says so when Katara heals him this episode. Azula literally destroyed the Avatar cycle for a short while
That’s what I’m fucking talking about please keep uploading more 🔥
We also need to take into kataras temprament as a water bender when considering how she reacts to things.
Woohoo season 3!
yeah, the third season has a bit of a different feel than the first two. but i think its one of the most consistently great seasons of tv! sooo many crazy good moments.
Have you guys figured out who voices the Fire Lord?
Can't imagine who's voice that is but I bet he has a very unique laugh
I think he hates sand
Here we gooo, Ozai ,Fire Nation....good luck😅
Woah! New outro music???
For some reason, the copyright free music we used to use, is no longer copyright free 😆
@@CarlieAndAnge You guys will have to just make your own riff 🎸🥁
Already with the puns in the title 😂😂🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Welcome to the best book 🔥
I want my honor back, zuko appears in the wild
Seeing you guys react to this makes me wanna see you watch MLP FIM SO BADLY 😭 it's such a good show and I'd be so curious of your reactions!
imo i think azula gave zuko credit for killing aang because she knew that he survived somehow, she knew that zuko was lying to cover his ass. azula is obsessed with being perfect and if she failed in killing aang, she'd probably think her father would turn on her and start to treat her like he treated zuko. so she told ozai that zuko killed aang so she wouldn't have to deal with the backlash of failing.
Book 2 is solid. But book 3 is really fire.
Are you guys planning on do Korra after ATLA is finished? it would be pretty cool since the animation is better and dispite some thinhs fans say it is a good show (korra is the avatar that comes after Aang, if you don't know)
Season three here we gp
Aang shaves his head in the Tales of BaSingSe episode.
Man Korra better come after this
One thing I just realised that could have happened.
I'm sure there's an epic AU fanfic out there somewhere telling the story of what happens next.
in legend of korra aang is a strait chad zutara fans big mad
Fr this also kinda annoyed me like I get u like them but u didn’t even watch till the end Zuko and Katara were NEVER meant for each other.
She looks better without makeup
❤😊

Carlie is jealous?)
