It’s time for the drag race you didn’t realise you needed… Until today!
We’ve got our hands on an all-new, 1,111hp Lucid Air Dream Performance, and it’s about to go head-to-head against a BMW M3!
So normally you would say this will be a slam dunk for the Lucid, after all, a stock BMW M3 comes equipped with a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six which is good for 510hp and 650Nm. However, while this M3 comes with the same engine, it’s been tuned and can now deliver an impressive 750hp and 900Nm! All this power is sent through the same 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs in at 1,780kg.
So then we have the Lucid. It’s equipped with two electric motors, and they combine to produce an eye-watering 1,111hp and 1,390Nm of torque. But of course, being an EV, it’s pretty damn heavy, tipping the scales at 2,383kg. It’s also SO much more expensive than the BMW, rolling up with a price tag of over £193,000!!
So will the more powerful Lucid snatch the W? Or will the weight difference prove decisive? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

The only issue with the Lucid is the lack of two motors at the rear. That’s why it loses against most super cars from the dig and Plaid S. The Sapphire is the unstoppable Lucid! I hope you guys get a hold of it.
yeah but theres also different models within it with varying horsepower the 1100hp is the dream but im sure it had some badging on it
@@RealMaGicXz but it’s still not a true performance model. It’s so heavy and just can’t put the power down because it lacks the second motor. The only trim that has the two motors in the back is a sapphire.

whats crazy is this is one of the slower bolt on tuned m3s... A good amount of the bolt on e50 guys are running high to mid 9s. I believe the stock turbos record so far is 9.4?

That BMW launch was so unbelievable I had to rewind it right away to see it again to believe it!
I have reviewed a Lucid Air Performance (I also have a tuned G82 M4). There is a launch procedure for it to rip off the line, which I'm not sure was performed correctly here, and the car also has to be in Sprint. But yes, its initial acceleration is less vicious than a Plaid or even Taycan Turbo S. The power builds more gradually and more like an ICE, which I also found strange. But this is a luxury car and it's built to perform as such. The 1250HP Lucid Sapphire is the opposite, it's faster than a Plaid and is frightening in "Sapphire Mode" thanks to a third motor.
interesting. i wonder what the times would look like with the lucid under 30% charge and the M3 with 30% fuel remaining ? something these tests never take into account. Gasoline is unstoppable for power to weight by quite a large margin.
@@ct1762 The M3 can heat soak the turbo just as the Air have over heating batteries. It does not cut power at 30%. Its not a tesla

Agreed, my non-tuned M4 2wd in the damp & drizzle can't hook up so tuning it would be pointless. Looks nice though, even the front!

Whoever tuned that deserves a medal. It launches brilliantly and so reliably squeezes every ounce out of its power. It's like a Porsche as Yan said. Incredible.
That car and these videos you’ve been doing with it has single handedly made it my favourite car on the planet. As much as I love the M3 already and it’s probably my favourite car, that spec combined with that INCREDIBLE performance has my jaw dropped

There is literally nothing more visually pleasing than when the wheel speed on the car matches with the frame rate of the camera and it appears the wheel is sitting still and sometimes the wheel appears to start going backwards.

The braking performance of that Lucid Air is surprisingly good.
Yeap those are standard steel brakes.... On a 2.5 ton car with minimal rubber....Can't complain
Lucid Air in my opinion has some serious stopping power like Elise GT1.
I agree. I think the brakes and the electric motor regeneration give it an advantage.
@@epi2045The electric motor recuperation has no influence on the break distance. The limiting factor are always the tyres.
@@mlcad6229That’s not 100% true. The EV uses a computer to keep the breaking power as close to the line as possible. This includes regen and brake pressure. In essence, it can ride that line much better than a human can so that “rubber” contact surface is used to the maximum.
That M3 is perfect. Sounds great, insanely fast, reasonable price. The way the exhaust blasted dust off the track when launch control was engaged at the start of the first drag race was probably my favourite thing about it.

This channel made me find the love for cars again! I absolutely loved cars during my childhood, but lost it somehow during my teenage years. Now i am 30 and the interest is slowly coming back, thanks Mat and Carwow.

Lucid had a launch mode:
Deactivate the ADAS features
Turn on Sprint mode
Wait a few seconds while foot is on the break until the bear flag icon comes up on the screen
Then press firmly down on the accelerator

@@roland9435 it doesn't share much, but the B58 is still insanely good.
I have a mk5 Supra (that has the B58 engine in it), and just a simple ECU tune easily boosted it to over 400 whp. Crazy engine.
The newer BMW inline 6’s are absolutely insane. I looked into getting a 340i xDrive with the B58 for a project one day and it’s definitely still on my radar

The limited top speed might have something to do with the tires fitted to the Lucid. W-rated tires are good for 168 mph / 270 kmph.
Try turning on the Launch Control on on the Lucid and run it back or turn the LC off on the M3 and run it back.

Lucid should be doing the quarter under 10 pretty easily…. Doesn’t look like launch control was activated. That M3 is a beast though. 10.2 with only 750 HP is pretty incredible.

I would rather see a 1000 hp g80 against it or the model s plaid. I dont know if UK has any yet, USA has some. The F90 did 10.1 and 10.0 sec 1/4 mile. But ofc it would be faster in the roll race

You guys posted a video 2 years ago featuring an M5 with 1000 HP. It did the quarter mile in 10 seconds flat. While this having 250 HP less, took just 0.2 seconds more. Insane!!

The Lucid did really well since it does not market itself as a performance car, more of a luxury cruiser. Can’t wait to see how the Saphire(the proper sporty one) does.

Not exactly, the Lucid Air Dream has a Performance trim (1111hp) and a Range trim (933hp). This one is the Performance. 2 variants weren’t planned at first, part of why it exists was to one-up Tesla the next day after they announced the 1020hp Model S Plaid in Sept 2020.

Have you not noticed that electric cars are just plain faster than gas powered cars? Luxury GT cars that are ICE all have comparatively huge HP numbers to their economy car counterparts, this is the same. 1111hp is for being able to maneuver your car however you want to since you paid 6 figures for it (in the UK at least... it starts around 80k in the US).
Now you need to do a set of races with the same BMW M3 from this video and a Lucid Air Sapphire if you guys can get your hands on one! That BMW is CRAZY quick off the line, very impressive!

@@reality8793 What specifically about it do you think isn't good value? It's been better value in terms of performance and feeling than anything in its price range and it demolishes everything including my RS6; the G80 is too harsh of a car for daily driver use though. I abuse the G80 and get like 180 miles out of £70 and still think its good value. If you want luxury value you can buy a 2018 S350 for 40k and get 600+ miles in a £90 tank.

Roll races, if it was a 1 mile race that BMW would've caught up the Lucid against its 168 mph top speed. BMW top speed is 202 mph maximum.

@@paulstevens9409 Well, in carwow it does count as a win. The roll race between the Bugatti Chiron and the Redbull RB7. RB7 hit a limiter at 195 mph and then the Chiron surpasses it at 209 mph and the W is given to the Chiron. Don't mind me bein a nerd :D

There’s a launch mode in Lucid which I’m not sure if you guys were using. It’s super easy to use but it isn’t mentioned in the manual.
This trim does quarter mile in less than 9.7 seconds.
You can see they let that m3 win with that power that lucid has no way that m3 should of won. Clearly bmw park lane have their dirty fingers interfering with carwow now. They been doing it with yianni for few years now. He always talks about bmw park lane.

😢 are you serious. I was thinking the same thing. They should have placed it in sprint mode. M3 would have not stood a chance in standing quarter mile I drove a lucid air dream gt. And In the first 2 modes it's quick , but in sprint it became mental. No I'm not dogging the BMW it's fast in its own right. But they should have raced it with the lucid in sprint mode with launch control used also. That would have been a more direct competition.
...yet the presenter used Lucid Air launch mode in the other UA-cam video he posted for the same car but chose not to for this video...crazy
Yes I knew the Lucid had different modes but couldn't remember the names. Different driving modes limit the hp output and their is no way that was the top one. I know it also has a launch mode. We all know the Lucid Dream runs the 1/4 in 9.9 sec over and over again

@@Carrissvmf literally 100k of that price is your governments import taxes, so it's not fair to complain about that. Why do Brits always have to be so nationalist about every single thing? Every other review of Lucid Air vehicles has been fantastic and performance figures back them up, but Matt has been so reluctant to compliment it in any way, and I guarantee you it's because it's from America. A little national pride is fine, but when you literally have such a bad inferiority complex that any time anyone [other country] else does anything better than you, you get emotional and can't just respect their achievement it's just childish. I guess it's not "anyone" really, since Matt compliments BMW and Merc a lot, it's just the US. Anything that is made/done over here just has to be spun as worse than how a European country would have done it. I know there are many cases where that is true, but this is not one of them. Gotta be able to recognize your own biases.
It's all a matter of personal taste. I agree with yianni. There's barely any EV I like the look of, they're weird for weirdness sake, shouting "look I'm an EV". I like the look of the polestar because it looks like a very smart small executive car. The kia ev6 is nice from certain angles. Other than that, they're all ugly to me.
