It was the French who added the superfluous "u" to arrive at the ridiculous "colour" spelling, and since the British guy who wrote the first major British dictionary (Samuel Johnson) thought that the French were fashionable (LOL), he borrowed their laughable "colour" spelling. Meanwhile in the USA, Noah Webster didn't care at all about "French flair" and retained the centuries-old correct spelling of "color" in his dictionary (the same goes for the word "honor," by the way). Overall, American English is closer to Middle English than current British English is.

I've looked but can't find the reason. Maybe it was considered bland?

But it's versatile. When I buy ice cream at the supermarket (I like Turkey Hill Black Label) I get vanilla and I have a variety of toppings at home: chocolate, caramel, blueberry, peach. That way I can have something different every time I want it.
Sorry you look at it that way. Most people were thrilled. It only took a couple of minutes - and then they got free ice cream (the real flavors), a small payment from us, and a fun shot on national TV. What's not to like? -Peter
Vanilla is a very underated flavor. You make a root beer float with vanilla ice cream, you eat hot apple pie with french vanilla ice cream, ice cream sandwiches have mostly vanilla ice cream inside, drumsticks have mostly vanilla ice cream inside. If vanilla ice cream can create all those bomb desserts then you are dead wrong my friend. Vanilla is an awesome flavor
