      @@BobbyGeee This is normal behaviour. It may look upsetting to humans but for guinea pigs this is just normal submissive behaviour, you'll get this with every introduction. It will most likely calm down once they're together for a while. It's not oppressive it's just the way guinea pigs are.

    I love watching the way they interact, the body language, the sounds, going back and forth. I think for a good bonding its a matter of finding 2 boars with the exact same temperament so that neither one is overly dominant or submissive. I think then they just decide to call a truce and live in peace. The little "punch" you mentioned made me laugh because my one girl does that to me when she doesn't like what I'm doing, usually cleaning her cage, she's very possessive of her 💩💩 and gets mad when I take it away. Weirdo.

    Seeing this makes it all the more clearer that I made the right choice when I kept 2 of my girls separated from my other girls. The two alpha females went into a full on tussle flying at each other in a fury, and both of them bit the other. I tried a few more times with different approaches but it was clear that they were absolutely out for blood and hated each other. Really sad. However, I have them each in a midwest side by side, with a wooden "fence" between them. They actually lay next to each other sometimes on each side of the fence, which is hilarious. Just don't remove that fence....lol!

      Geo sarks well i had two rabbits so it might be best to ask a vet but from what i know it completely calms their hormones and so they're less likely to attack each other. please do ask though but i would highly recommend however as i said, it's true for bunnies so i don't really know how well they cope under anaesthetic. otherwise, something that is recommended for bonding rabbits is to take them for a drive together as it's quite stressful and they're more likely to use each other as comfort, but again please double check as i don't know how the pigs would handle being in a car. i hope this helped though

    I discovered you through the dodo and my mom actually used to teach at a school near your rescue in chatsworth. But my aunt rescues guinea pigs in ridgecrest CA. So i have had little guys like this for years. I just wanted to say thank you for showing people how to care for them and how they are as pets. So many kids get them and don’t treat them well. I seriously loved mine. I had 3 named named Harry Ron and Hermione. I appreciate the time you’ve spent learning about them and the fact you sometimes know more than vets about their behaviors! Keep up the great work and I’m definitely donating to this because you’re doing great work.

    But then hen I had another trio with 3 different male piggies, they never fought. One of them passed, I adopted two more and now I have 4 males together. It's all about their personality.

      :/ they're just animals tho. They act more on animal instinct. If humans (animals) got at their extreme low points, where if you had to kill another one, in order to survive, you'd prob do it too. I'm not trying to be edgy, I'm js. Maybe even cannibalize. Animals are prob on constant survival mode. They only learn how to be more compassionate towards humans, once a human enters their lives. Their instincts only tend to drop more once you put food into the equation. But lucky for you, g. pigs are vegans.

    I had boys only for 5 years now. Did the bonding game countless times. some boys couples lasted for months before falling apart regardless of age some didn't last more than a day and some stays friends forever. Always in large c&c cages with plenty of everything to avoid arguments. One of my single boys, Harry always plays submissive for a week and after that time turns dominant and aggressive, never lasted longer than 2 weeks with any friend. My way for single boys is massive c&c cage split in the middle so each boy can have neighbour to talk to and share meals with while keeping his own territory, All are calm and happy. Good luck with Your piggie bonding and don't give up one them to quickly. Sending loads of love to all L.A. Guinea pigs and their amazing care takers.

    Saskia, if you are in the habit of putting that collapsable fence on that table, maybe you could build a lightweight rectangular frame to put around the base to keep its form , then you can just tuck it behind a shelf somewhere when you arent using it. Cheap pinewood or schedule 40 pvc. Shouldnt cost more then 10 dollars at the most.

      Great question.
      At the rescue we have a lot of single males till they get bonded to
      another boy when they get adopted. Since it is not feasible for us
      financially
      to have all the males neutered, they live in smaller single cages till
      then. On average our male guinea pigs are with only us 3 - 4 weeks and
      when adopted we make sure they will live in an appropriate size cage. If
      we have males that for some reason take a little longer to get adopted
      we will bond them to another or have them neutered so they can move to
      the larger cages. These smaller cages are also used for quarantine, sick
      pigs and recuperation after surgery and illness.

    I think we tried bonding our Bobby with Sushi. Sushi is really nice, but we liked Obi. I think Obi is one of those Buddha pigs (just not when you clip his nails). We sometimes like Obi better than our original pig, Bobby, but they each have their own personalities 💖 I hope Sushi is bonded and adopted soon.

    so in your situation, you're able to try wolfie's luck with multiple guinea pigs. what should a person do when they only have two guinea pigs on hand and it seems like the boys aren't going to get along? i am getting my baby - young guinea pig a friend very soon and i'm wondering what to do with them if they don't end up being a match.

    • @LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue
      @LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue  5 років тому

      That is always a tough one. If they don’t get along but you love both pigs and don’t want to give
      up either of them the next best thing is to have them living “apart
      together”. This can be achieved by dividing the cage so that they can
      touch noses, smell and see each other. You will even see them snuggling
      and sleeping right next to each other with the divider in the middle.
      They just cannot be together. The minute you remove the divider they
      will act like this is the 1st time they have seen each other
      and go right back to where they were they left off before the divider
      was put in. There are exceptions of course but usually this is how they
      respond.When
      going for this option make sure that the individual space for each
      guinea pig is large enough. Single pigs need about as much space as
      pairs. 2 x 3ft would be the minimum recommendation. Coroplast made cages
      would work really well for this purpose. Good luck with the Bromancing!!

    Saskia. I need help. I heard over and over that you always need at least 2 guinea pigs. I had the one now for about 2 or 3 months. Now I have a baby I've got. I have 2 separate caged next to each other and I have put them on the floor together and the bigger one is making those noises and trying to mount the little one only cant cause hes to fast. So do they need to be kept separate forever? I dont get it? If they hate each other and dont get along what's the point in getting 2? Should I have gotten a girl???

    • @epiphany5653
      @epiphany5653 3 роки тому +2

      Nope, mounting is normal when it comes to introductions as long as it’s two males. The noises you’re hearing is called rumble strutting, it just means dominance. Mounting should stop within a few months at most, but it’s possible that it may go on forever. As long as you don’t see the fighting, they should be ok together. Fighting looks like a huge fluff fall in the air, if they start fighting separate them with a towel/stick because u could get bit. Just keep trying. If you see the two pigs eating or laying down together, they are most likely compatible, but if it’s constant chasing to the point where one pig can’t eat or drink they may need to be separated and re-introduced later on. Hope this helped!

    Is there any time when you determine that a male pig is better off as a lone pig? My male is very agressive toward other males and I don't want him to get hurt or hurt another pig, he does not show signs of loneliness or depression being alone and my dog and cat visit his cage frequently and he seems to not mind them much, is it okay to keep him alone? If not what can I do?

    A long comment! My unusual bonding story:
    I’ve had my little guys for a short time. My husband surprised us with an 8 month old boar and I got attached to the little guy. I started watching You Tubes to learn what to do with him. That is how we ended up with a baby boar. Supposedly, babies do well with adults and by then Buckey was 10 months old. When we finally let them meet, the five week old BABY was the one who was the most dominant! Cedric chased Buckey and humped him for quite a while. When I finally put a cardboard box into their meeting area, they both went inside and were calm with each other. I was with them for FOUR HOURS the first day, and I felt it was safe to let them live together. My daughter and had I built a six foot long by two foot wide C&C cage and my mom and I sewed several sets of fleece cage liners and pee pads to put under their hidies and places they tend to sit and eat. The funny thing that has happened is that the baby has stopped being aggressive and is now following Buckey everywhere he goes. It’s like Buckey is his security blanket and it’s sooo cute! I’m working on taming them by hand feeding twice a day as well as holding them each day. (And yesterday we made an enclosed area in the backyard so they could eat grass and get fresh air. I put a couple of box houses in with them and they scurried to different houses. After a minute or two, baby Cedric screamed/wheeked in terror at being all alone in a strange environment! I gently picked him up and put him in Buckey’s house and for the next hour, Cedric tried his hardest to crawl underneath Buckey! I’ve never seen them cuddle like they did while we had them outside. We went inside after about an hour because the Florida weather was a bit hot for them, even in the shade beside a lake.) They are doing great as cage mates. I’m really enjoying the little guys and love watching You Tubes about Guinea pigs each day. Thank you for your videos. They really help!

      I'm no expert, but I would not try to put them together again after there has been an injury. They may be able to live next to each other if there's a divider, but I would not take a chance on putting them together and being injured again. It's disappointing, but their safety is most important.

    • @katnisseverdeen81
      @katnisseverdeen81 5 років тому

      Also, cage size is important, particularly extra space for males since they are more territorial. If they can't have space to get away from each other when they're annoyed, then a fight is going to happen.

    My oldest male just passed away yesterday, had him put to sleep after battling to get him to eat for a couple days, with nothing to show for it but two sleepless nights of syringe feedings and weight loss and him just lying there passively. He was done. I speculate the pain of his arthritic rear legs was too much to bear. I used the cbd every 3 or 4 hours but he was so locked up he must have hurt a lot. He even dragged his legs a few times and had trouble getting them under his body. The xrays showed the damage in his legs. You could see it. Im gonna misss that guy a lot. For years I started each day by waking to him ringing the bell in the boys side of the pen, for breakfast lettuce. This morning it was silent and that was when I realized how big a part of my life that bell had been. He rang for me each morning, and rang it as soon as i stepped in the house after work. ( And lots of times when I was home!)
    He had a male friend on his side of the pen, a young fella. The girls are next door seperated by mesh so they can kiss through it, and sometimes have carefully supervised visitations.
    So this video is perfectly timed, as little Ronnie Red will need a new friend.
    My impression of boys dwelling together is you need two components. 1 A mismatch in strength, age, or willfull temperment so that one pig agrees the other can be top dog ( top pig?) 2 A gentle temperment in the dominant pig so that they dont use that position to abuse the other pig. #1 you can venture a guess by looking at them before trying....but.... #2 you just dont know until you try, and has to be observed over time. I mean several weeks.
    So anyway, perfectly timed vid. Ill be taking this up eventually, just need some time to recover from losing my friend. RIP Kirito-San, my little bellringer. I'll always love you.

      Yes, if the piggys' are young and they get to the 'teenage stage', which is from 6months to 1 year old, the girls will disagree and the boys will fight. Once they hit 1 year old, they should settle down again. If you can get them through this stage with no blood drawn, do not seperate, if blood is drawn, then seperate and try bonding them again when they are older.
