Also this app can run on linux, unlike current boss tone studio
Love the channel. I started playing a couple years ago at the age of 50. I enjoy your videos and find them to be easy to follow yet technical enough to satisfy that side of my brain.
I love my 50 MkII and enjoying it and BOSS Studio quite a bit. I am intrigued by FX Floorboard mainly for the single pane of glass UI. Switching screens and remembering what the global settings were or the chain settings. Memory isn’t what it used to be.
Keep it up!
I might try to load this again and play with it.
Looks like a solution to a non issue. The boss software looks like it does everything this does with no issues. Just my thoughts anyway. Appreciate your efforts sharing this.
There are a some things you can't do with Tone studio, like customizing the FX chain and the sneaky amps, as well as a bunch of Midi stuff that I haven't a clue how to use. But I can do everything but the midi stuff from the mobile app if I need to. Tone Studio is a lot easier on the eyes too. If you're running Linux, this would be your only option. One of many reasons I don't run Linux on my machines.
Agree. For me, the main reason to investigate this was for access to the sneaky amps, but I only found a few of them useful. The fact that the sneaky amps are also available in .tsl files that you can import into the Tone Studio library kinda negates the value of this app (for me). The customisable effects chain - don't care, likewise the MIDI stuff.
I'm so used to the Tone Studio and the Katana Librarian mobile app and am covered for everything I need with those, really don't have a need for this.
I can appreciate it the effort gone into developing this, but I'm not sure I appreciate any of the feature differentiation it offers. I've also had issues with it hanging, so am not convinced it's stable.
Looks cool and like you said, I love the time people took to do this. Hopefully it'll get updated and especially the UI, because it looks the same as the one I used ages ago with the GT-10.
If I'm not mistaken, it is built off of the same software. The developed said the FX Floorboard is available for many different BOSS Units.
@@Guitarnivore Ah, that makes sense. It was good to use back then with GT-10, but it does need refreshing to really be an alternative in my book.
NOTE: If you're not having any issues, please let me know what OS you're using and what firmware version is on your Katana. I'm using Windows 11 with firmware version 2, which is also the FX Floorboard version from September 2022.
So I have found a solution to the settings not saving problem. It seems you may have to install/open the software as administrator, which may be a Windows thing, because I've had software at work that I've had to launch as admin, when I'm already in an admin account. The loader issue is another story. I'm going to reach out to the developer about it and see what they say.
Update: I've been playing with it a little more and tried uninstalling the 64 bit version and installing the x86 (32 bit) version and have had the same results, I've even found that some of my own saved tones load up with a totally different FX chain and sometimes different FX. Next I may try a legacy version just top see what happens. I want to know if it's a global problem or just a my computer problem.
There is a work around when your admin account requires admin privileges. Windows implemented User Access Control (UAC) so certain actions would require a manual response be it providing admin creds or acknowledging a prompt.
UAC is configurable through the Control Panel and you can set it to None prevent this behavior. There are security considerations to doing this so please do what is right for you.
Thanks for the deep dive... Not a lot of great video content out there on this platform, but yours is by far superior . Very helpful, thank you!
If you watch my follow up, that explains some things a bit better after I reached out to the developer. FX Floorboard is not a bad option, it's just not my thing.
Great review! I'm sure there will be an update soon, I hope he can fix some of these issues. I do like the parametric eq graphics, among other things. The mki version is much less buggy. Have heard that he was on other projects, and is now getting back to the mkii.
I spoke to him online and while it does have some bugs, he explained the loader more in depth to me. I actually did a follow up and stated what he explained. He seems like a really nice guy and is super busy with other stuff as well. The loader is for Midi controllers, which is something I don't use or totally understand really.
As a Linux user this is the only way to interface with my Katana. Remember it's a work of love, and the software has been rewritten for a large part when the latest firmware for MKII came out. It's still a bit buggy I think.
Remember to help with the bug chasing
I can definitely appreciate the work that goes into it. I know the Windows version is a bit buggy on the loader, but I also noticed patches I made with Tone Studio load differently on FX. I've been trying to talk with the developer. I didn't realize it's made for 25 different amp/fx platforms. I'm hoping it can be worked out and I can do an update video in the future.
Any tips on getting the amp to connect with FX Floorboard on Linux? out-of-the-box the amp is detected as a MIDI and ALSA device, but the FX Floorboard software from sourceforge doesn't detect the amp
@@prism223 Have you tried contacting Collin Willcocks from the FX Floorboard facebook group? He's super cool and he may be able to help. facebook.com/groups/3405733683076038
@@prism223 I had to fiddle around in the preferences of FX Floorboard. In the menubar go to [Settings] -> [Preferences] -> [USB/Midi] and look if everything is set the right way. On that same menu you also need to select the right Katana model, I believe it defaults to Katana 50 (MK?).
All issues (cons) described have been fixed in the latest version. This app ROCKS!!!
Yeah, I like the new version too. Some of the issues I pointed out in the video, I addressed in the follow up I did a short time later.
I am preferring FX Floorboard because it lets me position my effects send/return anywhere I want. I have several preamps on my pedal board that I use to get the tones I want. I also have an EQ and an ancient Maxon OD-808 overdrive and a looper pedal on there. Also on there is the footswitch pedal for my Boss Katana 100 Mk2 head. So the pedal board creates the tone, it goes into the effects return which is positioned AFTER the Katana preamp and EQ but before all the effects and power amp. So I get to create my tone with various preamps, bypass the Katana preamp and tone controls, and then use all the great effects onboard the Katana. This actually works very well except for one thing.... No matter where I put the onboard noise gate, I cannot get anything through it. I have adjusted it every which way I can but I can never get anything through it. What am I missing? I had it in the signal path before when I was using the somewhat limited chain selection in the Katana Studio and it worked fine. On FX Floorboard I was trying to put the noise gate right after the effects loop return so basically right after the EQ and preamps. No joy. Nothing through it no matter how I have it set up. I tried different locations; in the middle of the effects, after the effects... no go. I have to shut it off completely to get a signal out.
I just tried with the latest version of FX Floorboard and I'm not getting the same results as you on Windows. That makes me think you either need to update or you have something else going on in your signal chain.
Oh, man, this is what I needed to get from my Katana, thank you!
I hope.it works well for you. I did a follow up, on this video after I reached out to the developer and learned some things about it and addressed some things about it I didn't like or understand. It's a cool app. Just not for me.
I have no issue with saving and loading on mine.. only thing i've found is don't touch any amp knobs or it will put the channel your in back to default, thats only issue i've come across so far..
That's good to know. Windows (if so10 or 11?), Mac or Linux? I'm still playing with the loader and it still isn't working properly. Saving patches to the amp works fine and I found the workaround for the settings problem, but the loader is still wonky for me. I've tried changing folder permissions and opening the app as admin. Don't know. Seems it just doesn't want to consistently load patches. Even loading from the saved patches can be a bit hit and miss.
There is also a version of this software for the Roland GR-55 guitar synth.
There are actually 25 different device versions of this! I learned that from the creator. Check out my follow up to this video if you have a chance. It explains a bit more into understanding the features.
Hi, can I ask a quick question. Perhaps one of your subscribers might be able to help if you can't. I recently bought the GT 10 and it's a truly great floor controller. The problem is that the Time Central software doesn't have a download version of the software for the gt10...there are options for alot if boss products but not the gt10! This can't be right, can it? Did they bespoke Tone Central for product specific floor controllers? Or am I missing the point and any Tone Central version works with all floorboards? I was hoping someone might know. Cheers
never heard of it until now.
i will check it out
Let me know if you have any similar issues with it. I've been trying all sorts of things to resolve the loader issues and haven't had any luck. I'm trying to get some support from the developer and see if he can offer any resolutions.
So i have the mk1 is there a way to workaround the boost fx and mod, and add more effects?
I'm not sure about the MK1. You might want to download it and give it a shot. If so, it seems like a great options. It's free, so you really don't have anything to lose.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I thought my Katana was a good amp, with this it approaches great!
The Katana is a great amp no matter which software you use, but I supposed being able to use a Midi controller with it would make it better. I'm not fond of the FX Floorboard though. I guess I'm just more in tune with Tone Studio, but use whatever works best for you and inspires you! Thanks for watching.
Great info. I agree with the notion regarding librarian. I think the loader section should be more like the live set function of BTS. That being said. I am stuck with using FX Floorboard. As both my laptop. And desktop. Running Windows 10 Home. Will not open BTS. Hangs on a window with the BTS icon on the top left. Seems to have happened after a recent Windows update?? Which can't be rolled back. Contacted Boss Tech Support. They have yet to come up with a solution.
That's a bummer. Have you tried uninstalling tone studio and reinstalling the latest version (2.1.0) if you have the latest firmware?
Please see my follow up to this video here. I contacted the author of the software and he helped explain a lot of the functions that I don't understand. I felt like my lack of knowledge didn't allow me to give this software a fair shake. ua-cam.com/video/NIKthBiA98g/v-deo.html
I downloaded the the file from the provided link but its a READ ME file. Is that correct? What do I do with it? I also downloaded SneakyAmps. Most amps do not work
Yeah, that link can be confusing. Use this link and don't download from the green button. There are a list of files below that with the correct download file for your operating system. sourceforge.net/projects/fxfloorboard/files/KatanaFxFloorBoard/Katana%20FxFloorBoard%20for%20MK1%20Desktop/
The reason some of the sneaky amps don't work is due to them being made on other boss software. The software in the Katana was developed from other Boss software. That's the only reason some of them work.
Does this app works for Bluetooth connection to Airstep Kat + Katana 100MKII?
I use the Librarian for Android, but having a desktop version would be nice too.
I honestly don't know. Sorry.
@@Guitarnivore, thanks for your reply.
I was not able to make it connect to Airstep, so I will keep looking for some alternatives.
Windows 10 64 bit. Regardless of your administrator privileges, it would appear that any single selection from the 'Saved Patches' list will result in two very different patches. Pressing the selection once will give you one set of parameters whilst a second will give you another completely different version of the same title. For example, selecting 80sClean from the list: - 1st click Pre-Amp/Crunch, Gain/38, Bass/27, Mid/83, Treble/87, Pres/47.............. A 2nd click on the same patch will return this - Pre-Amp/Clean Twin, Gain/46, Bass/52, Mid/51, Treble/57, Pres/50. I've tried the same thing on multiple choice patches and they all seem to work as they should. I remain baffled???
Yeah, it's really weird. The developer sent me some information that I'm going to do a follow up video on. Seems the loader is only used for midi purposes. I like the idea, but BTD just seems a lot easier and consistent. If I want custom FX chains, I can use my tablet and Katana Librarian.
I have the artist km2. I would like bits for on my iPhone. Will that come available? Alternatives? Thanks.
You can buy a mobile app called Katana Librarian for about $9 (It's worth it!) that works great. There is an older video on my channel about it, but I'm going to do an updated one very soon.
@@Guitarnivore Great. Also watched your video on it this morning. I have my tablet connected to my kanaat anyway for backing tracks, so this comes in very handy.
@@jackschijven8219 I just bought the other mobile app called Katana Man and I'll be doing a video on that once I get the feel for it. That way people can check them both out before they buy them and see which one they might like better.
it looks a little different from the one I downloaded. It doesnt have the loader on the left side
Did you download it for Katana or another Boss product? It might have been updated, I'm not sure. I don't use it, so I haven't checked it out since making this video.
floorboard is so confusing and im always ruining older tones somehow. like ive lost entire live sets and they sound very trebley
Some folks swear by it, but I can't get on with it.
Does this also work with multi fx like boss gt1?
Yes!! sourceforge.net/projects/fxfloorboard/files/GT-1FxFloorBoard/
This does not work for me, I make a change, select write/sync to loader slot 9, save the file then try to load it after restart and it is just a default Katana II, trying for days with no joy on this. Like you said, the LOADER is "wonky". This thing just doesn't work, I even tried copying BROWN to loader slot 9, then tried other settings, then tried BROWN in loader and it was something totally different. It seems that FX just randomly writes stuff, I guess TONE STUDIO is the only real option.
So I found out that the slots are for saving to a midi controller, but I agree that it's still a bit whacky. I'll stick to Tone Studio for PC, but check out Katana Librarian for Mobile. It's a $9 app, but well worth it it you have an android phone or tablet.
@@Guitarnivore I just went back to TS too, entered my settings into channel 1 and it took. I really wanted to like the foot pedal but just too hard and it really sucked setting up a sound then trying to load it the next day and it doesn't take like in your video. Thanks for the vid
@@weasel6535 I agree. It's just easier in TS.
its becoming people are tweeking more than playing .. the boss amp sounds good already on the 8 presets .. its doesnt need a lot imho
Why buy an amp with so much to offer, if all you're going to do is slightly turn some knobs on the panel. That's like buying a Corvette and never shifting out of second gear. You do you and let people tweak and fiddle all they like. It's their amp and their life.
tone studio is safer for your amp...
it is so ugly , sorry .
Don't be sorry. I'm not fond of the way it looks either.
@@Guitarnivore normal BTS is Ok I think
@@CoolPabloDeTodo I agree. I love the normal BTS. There is nothing wrong with it, though some would probably disagree.
I tell the guy about floorboard and he makes a video about it lmfao 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I made this video in December. You mentioned FX Floorboard two weeks ago.
