I've spent my life making things and have yet to make one piece to my own satisfaction. Perfection is unattainable and most times your mistakes are invisible to others.
Russ staples thank you very much! Your wishes might get answered sooner than you think as I'm currently working on a woodworking related tool and I plan a few more in the future.
The tools you make are at another level, the art in the tools makes them worth as much as any thing you make with them. You are very skilled and it shows in every video, thank you for letting us look over your shoulder as you work.
I'm just getting into hobbyist machining and watching your videos makes me afraid will spend all my time making hand tools to give myself pleasure as I work instead of being "productive". I love your work. Thanks for sharing.
I saw some other video you made. I'm amazed to find someone else working only with hand tools as I usually do. I have some power tool but I try not to use it ;-). My works are not so beautiful as yous, I still have to work on, especially with drawings of engraved leaf. Good job, thank you for sharing!
Fashion follows function. The better it works, the more beautiful it is. The other side of that coin is functional art which is nice to look at, and does something useful, hopefully well.
I agree with the comment below. You pointed out a few small design errors, but this is still a beautiful tool; something that would be a pleasure to use. Excellent workmanship and a pleasure to watch and learn from. Thanks for sharing your obvious skills. Best wishes.
I really like your way of working, think it´s much like people made their tools in former times, when they still had them for a lifetime. Wish you all the best!
This is the third video of yours that i'm watching -- I gave it a thumbs up before it even started. Your work is therapeutic to watch, and a treasure to admire. Well done, Uri.
I really appreciate when you show your mistakes(I am a Bladesmith) it helps me to avoid the same ones and encourages me to continue with my engraving endeavors. I really enjoy your videos.
I've been watching a lot of your vids lately and have thoroughly enjoyed every one of them; but this one had me pissing myself; the reference to Mark Wood was freaking hysterical. Your talent, wit, and charm are very enjoyable/entertaining.
Wonderful ! Could you do more about engraving? For exemple: how to make the engraving chisel, how to engrave smoothly, the position of the arms and so on.... Thank again a very good one
Thanks! as far as engraving Technics go I'm far from an expert so I would be a bit reluctant to give tips and advise on that matter. I still have much to learn and I'm certain I'm doing many things wrong. For people with much more skill and expertise in engraving I would check out Sam Alfano and "The Homestead Craftsman", he has a few videos about hammer and chisel that are quite informative. I do however Intend very soon to post a video showing a little bit about how I make my engraving chisels (in a quite low-tech fashion).
@@urituchmanpigeon what's amazing about your accent is I still reading your message with your accent in my head lol I'm Brazilian, by the way, I have a very weird accent, yours is nice to hear...
Very good for the first one! Thanks for showing the steps of your production. But more importantly, thanks for objectively revealing your mistakes. You have much talent and I can't wait to see your next video. It is wonderful to see tools made into beautiful art. Bravo!
Uri, you much too hard on yourself. I love the work you do and it inspires others, myself included, to try some of your projects. You are self-taught at much that you do. For that, you are to be commended. I always look forward to a video of yours so keep them coming!
Love this! I made a similar mistake with my first marking gauge. The next one, I put the nut on the inside before gluing the pieces up, so as you tighten the screw it pushes the nut or threaded insert into the underside of the wood. Great stuff man!
I, for one, would love to see an Uri Tuchman bearing puller. They have plenty of flat, metal surfaces for engraving, they are slightly complicated machines, which you could probably make even more complex, and even generic off-the-shelf ones look pretty cool as is, at least, the 3-armed ones do. In case you don't know what it is (doubtful), it's for removing bearings, gears and other similar things from shafts or rods. Just Google it.
Hi Uri: Try consider your little mistakes - let us avoid the term error - and think of them (mistakes) as your own style. Like a baroque pearl. Nature itself is not always perfect or symmetrical. Let perfection to HaShem, The Everlasting One. You're an incredible artist, half artisan half researcher. You could have been working or even teaching at Bauhaus or Betzalel School. Go ahead achi ! 👏👏👏 fro Brazil 🇧🇷
You may want to consider a semi circular blade instead of a pin when the time comes to change it out . IF that time comes . Round blades cut smoother than pins . Great job Uri..as always.
Excellent work, You said it was your first one so forget the problems, the nail/blade needs to be sharpened or even look at Japaneese style which uses a straight blade which gives a smooth line across grain. Another thing you might wish to add is a retained brass pressure bar under the brass screw which will mare the ruler with repeated use. Great craftsmanship! keep it up
I was just going to say this. It kinda brings the energy down a bit at the end. Nothing wrong with noticing issues but you could have just kinda quickly mentioned it. "It doesn't slide smoothly, it will probably scratch the varnish a bit. Also off-camera I had to fix the screw for the slide, it was warping the whole thing so I added a stabilizing screw." Like three sentences max, the video speaks for itself, no need to hate on the thing we just enjoyed watching you make for 10 minutes lol
But to have a straight and truthful look on your mistakes, defines you as a real Artist. Always seeking the unreachable perfection and know your flaws always in the process. If you start to cheer yourself on everything up creativity is lost, because even a stick from the ground is then wonderful. (it is, but not in an artistic sense when it comes to create something) I once said to a friend: "I want my mistakes, I want my frustration, stop talking it down!"
@@skjelm6363 I disagree that it's important. Your quest for perfection is never-ending, it's unreachable. A goal never meant to be met. So unless your plan is to make the same piece over and over again until you meet some arbitrary standard, it will never ever be satisfactory. It's just as helpful to see what you've done that's better than before; allowing your mind to focus on improvements rather than failings. We all know when we have failed, but nobody ever told us how to succeed
@Skeets McGrew: Erm, You disagree with what? - did I get it right, we are on the same page? I think too there is no such perfection, but its the fuel. And satisfaction (for me) is the process itself, not to achieve the goal (its nice to end sth but then it is still over) Hm, and to get improvements, you have to see the failings, right?
You can fix the removable cutter by removing it and making a set screw to hold it in place. Alternative would be to make a shouldered cutter/marker so it can't push in.
Dude. You are a mad genius. Your stuff inspires me but holy crap. So much work. I can't decide if I need to buy an engraving kit or go see a psychologist for considering this art form.
Lol I love this first video. Uri is a total laugh. Plus I love the marking stick. I want one. Don't know what I'd do with one. Probably randomly mark shit. But I really want one.
Man your art is amazing! I literally loved every single one of your artwork pieces on your website! Can you do a video showing some and talking a little bit about the inspiration or details of them? Especially the gold Reduction piece!
Ianwanx Thanks my friend! I actually intended to make the gold reduction project my first video but I was to eager to get it going before I bought my video camera. I do intend to make another one that is a bit more refined and make a video out of it.
Believe me , You are as refined & if not even more perfect than your craft...amazingly made in 9 months ha... Yet I wonder was your soul made in 9 mths too ? & what skill could make such a thing..? It's wonderful to watch & then self critic 😂x❤x what are we like ? Fascinating x❤x
I have started at the Beginning and Will be bingeing this.
I've spent my life making things and have yet to make one piece to my own satisfaction. Perfection is unattainable and most times your mistakes are invisible to others.
Well that explains why I can never make anything that meets my standards. That’s also why I’m probably really picky when I buy powertools
Sir, that is amazing. Please, do more woodworking tools. With your talent they will be works of art.

I'm just getting into hobbyist machining and watching your videos makes me afraid will spend all my time making hand tools to give myself pleasure as I work instead of being "productive". I love your work. Thanks for sharing.
You are refreshingly honest, we learn by our mistakes to improve. Well done from Australia

You could glue felt in the gap that rubs against the shellac. The felt can take up the side to side slack and act as a bearing.

The engraving is immaculate, crazy good!!
My goodness, how beautiful ornamentation! Thank you for sharing. Amazing work!

A tool one needs that you brought to a hole new level.
That's a really nice marking gage!
Killer work, I'm glad I found your channel.

Love the way you go over the design at the end.
Keep the video coming

You focus too much on your errors brother, your work is simply beautiful. We all make mistakes

Especially when the object is stupid and of little practical use. It's as muvh art as design, and art absolutely cannot be perfected

What a completely charming video, very nice work. It is so difficult to find something new and refreshing but this definitely is.
It's a lovely piece of work, Uri. Every day is a school day. A very nice marking gauge indeed.
Dude, you make it look so easy.
Please show the annealing and quenching as well! Thanks for sharing :)

Love that part around 4 minutes where your cat is asleep to the tapping of your hammer.
Great video. Thanks.

Thanks for bringing me here from This Old Tony. Subscriber #246 reporting for duty. Awesome stuff, Uri!
Do you use hand tools on all your projects? This was great!
Love it!
Uri, does the engraved face that runs along the wood that you are going to be marking scratch into your engraving and mar it up?
good job
I love your work, but why do you use imperial measurments despite civilised metric?
gitarowiec100 you can’t even spell civilized.
