Sony ZV1 for Zoom Meetings

- My experience using the Sony ZV1 Camera for Zoom meetings and content creation.
I am not a photographer or videographer. I am a Marketing Coach who spends 6 hours + per day in zoom meetings and creating content.
Here is a review of the Sony ZV1 from the perspective of coaches and online course creators. As a webcam using the Elgato Camlink 4K and as a general vlogging camera for video content creation.
In this video I use the Sony A6600 with a Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens. A very expensive setup. Is it worth it? I honestly think the ZV1 looks better and to a non-photographer like me is much easier to use.
Check out the video to see for yourself...

Big thanks for this! Great to see it in action. I’ll be getting one tomorrow.
Amazing! Thank you! Exactly the perspective I needed, not too technical, I just wanted to see if it works kind of simple 😂 so thank you!
This is awesome. Just ordered my ZV1, can’t wait for it to arrive. Like you I’m not a professional photographer/vidoegrapher. Thank you.
You’re welcome you’ll love the camera it’s great!
fantastic video thank you for sharing the difference and simplified format.
O.Goni thanks, glad you found it helpful 🙏
I am also a Coach and cannot thank you enough for this. I was looking was an easy alternative.
Also, quick question, Colin. On Zoom, are you looking into the camera while speaking to clients, and then toggle to staring into your laptop monitor when clients are speaking?
Great video my friend. This is a awesome camera . I recently bought one 😊👍🏼
Thanks 🙏 yes it’s a wonderful camera :)
Thank you! Really appreciate your review!
Thanks 🙏
@@ColinScotland, please, could you give some advices how to make sure that the power supply works for a session of, for example, 3hrs? I'm giving lectures to my students and just ordered the ZV-1 (thanky to you, btw.) with the Elgato 4k. However, it's kind of impossible to find what's called a "dummy battery" as power supply for the ZV-1 (as Elgato mentions it) here in Switzerland. So, although micro-hdmi is used to connect to the Elgato 4k, USB cannot be used for charging the battery inside the ZV-1, can it? I'd appreciate any advice! Thank you in advance.
@@wolfgangschafer339 Hey Wolfgang. I use mine for hours and hours. The best way is to use USB charging directly into a mains plug, as it doesn't seem to pull enough power via USB for me but mains plug keeps it juiced up for hours 👍
@@ColinScotland Wonderful! So using micro-hdmi to Elgato 4k and USB to main plug works simultanously? That would be awesome.
@@wolfgangschafer339 that’s what I use and it works fine for me 👍
Since this video was made, Sony introduced windows to driver software in August which works very well and let you both charge the camera and carry the video off of a single USB cable. I really like my camera, but sometimes when I am on zoom sitting at a desk with steady light and not moving, the camera brightness level just goes up and down a little which is annoying and I hope I find some setting that will fix that
Hey Bruce, that is not an issue I have had. I wonder if it is a setting in the camera causing it to do that? Here is a video of all my settings, hopefully you will be able to check it against yours to see what’s causing the issue 🙏 ua-cam.com/video/6uIsVsQriLw/v-deo.html
hi bruce, which software is it? i have this camera, still havent figured out how to use on zoom.
I love your video, do you have the mic connected to the ZV1 or is it plugged in to the computer?
Thanks 🙏 the mic is connected to the computer and just the video from the camera is used in zoom
Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to getting my ZV1! I do have a silly question, sorry. Do you need to have a microSD card in the camera if you're only using it as a webcam? Thanks again for making this video and sharing your knowledge and experience with the ZV1!
Hi there. No you don't need an SD card to use this as a webcam 👍
@@ColinScotland Hi, so I just set this up but is there a way to make it stop blinking "no card" on the screen :)
@@kcopen I dont believe so. It doesn't affect what is shown on zoom, it's more of annoyance when looking at the camera so I have a card in mine for that reason :)
Colin I also like your other UA-cam Channel, keep up the great videos.
Thanks 👍
@@ColinScotland Colin what frame rate did you use in this video ua-cam.com/video/Q820MrFIiFc/v-deo.html
Great video, thank you! So, I do have a Sony SV-1, I have downloaded Sony Edge Webcam on my mac and the camera works with OBS and Sony Remote. However, the camera does not show up on Zoom, Skype, and Google Meet. Do I need a Camlink for that? thank you very much
Hey Lorenzo, I haven't used the Sony software so not sure, I use the Elgato CamLink 4K as it gives a much sharper image than USB and shows up in zoom/google meet/ skype etc. without any hiccups. Hope that helps :)
Thanks very much for sharing your thoughts on this camera. Just a quick question though, do you have any idea of why there were so many laggy moments of your footage while demonstrating how it looks on zoom meetings? If that happens while have zoom meetings then I'm worried because people would get very disturbed and annoyed by that. Do you have this issue while having all your zoom lessons with your students or clients?
Yes simple. It’s because I was recording the screen and audio via ECamm live software whilst also broadcasting via zoom so it was too much for my laptop to handle. A clever person would have recorded them separately ;) this lag never happens when I’m just in zoom
@@ColinScotland thanks. Awesome. Then I should have nothing to worry then. Take care and wish you all the best. Keep up the good work and God bless:)
Hey Colin I actually went ahead and purchased the ZV-1 it's awesome, just got it. I was wondering what the solution was to have audio from my attached shotgun/lav mic on my camera to be able to be streamed through into my zoom meeting? Or is this not possible
Hey Jake, congrats on getting the ZV1 it's such a great little camera. Not sure what happens with the webcam software Sony released for windows but on my mac with the Elgato Camlink 4k it is just a video source (no audio) when streaming. If you have a lav mic you may be able to plug that directly into your computer and use it as a mic source in zoom. Otherwise, you will need a separate USB mic for good audio quality. Hope that helps 👍
@@ColinScotland Thank you! My best wishes to your continued success Colin, I appreciate your reply’s to my questions
I teach online lectures which could least a couple of hours each and my biggest concern is the battery not lasting long enough. When it is plugged into the Camlink does it charge the camera also? Or is there another solution that we can use to power it while streaming? I thought you answered this question in the video the first time I watched it but for some reason, I could not find the answer here?
Hey there, yes I’m the same I can be on zoom sessions for six hours straight some days. The internal battery dies really quickly but when the camera is plugged into my laptop via USB or the mains it stays on for as long as you need. I have HDMI and USB cable plugged in all the time. 👍
Hi Colin I just purchased the Zv1 and excited to use it. I heard that Sony was supposed to release a software update to enable us to use zv1 as a webcam without a capture device in July. But cannot find any further information about that being available yet. Curious if you heard about this?
Hey Ali Abbasi congrats on the purchase it is an awesome little camera! Yes I heard the same thing and am looking forward to it but there has been no mention of it from Sony yet as far as I’m aware. Hopefully will be soon. Meantime I’m using the Elgato Camlink which works a treat
Yes, the driver software came out in August or so. It works very well and it means that a USB cable will both charge the camera and carry the video at the same time.
@@brucequinn thanks Bruce I checked it out but seemingly it only works on Windows right now so I’m patiently waiting for a macOS version 🙏
Colin, thanks for this. I also have a ZV-1 which I primarily use for Zoom right now, for essentially the same reasons you mentioned. I'm also on a Mac and but I use a U-TAP capture card rather than the Camlink. One issue I have is that I cannot seems to get the right settings for focus. I have it set on AF-C and face and eye recognition is on, but the camera does not keep a consistent focus. Even with the background defocus on, the camera seems to be continually hunting for the right focus, with background going in and out of focus. I've had people mention it to me and it's now become quite distracting to me. I wonder if you can share the specific camera settings you're using to ensure the focus stays consistent. Are you using autofocus?
Hey Ed. I made you a video of my settings so hopefully you can match them to yours and figure out which of the settings you need to change. Peace and best wishes, Colin
ua-cam.com/video/6uIsVsQriLw/v-deo.html
Colin Scotland thank you so much for doing that! Much appreciated. I’ll take a look.
Ed O'Neal my pleasure. Hope you’re able to figure it out from that. Those menus are confusing :)
What are your settings I use a hdmi adapter and it is squeezing my image
gsrproductions1 hello, it’s set to 16:9 and clean hdmi out. Hope that helps :)
What audio are you using? I have the Rode podcaster do I need to connect that to the camera?
Hi there. I use a Shure SM7B connected to the RodeCaster Pro for zoom. This connects directly to the computer so you only use the video from the camera. Hope that helps :)
Hey man great video just bought the same camera to start my UA-cam channel to show people how easy it is to not only lose weight but how to mentally get through things and I plan to do all this by recording literally my whole experience. Wanted to wish you good luck on your journey because I know how hard it is to get in front of the camera 📸! Have a good day and stay safe !!!! Subscribed !
Thanks brother. You'll love the camera its awesome. Good luck with your channel 👊
Hi Colin, I get about a 0.5 second video delay when I use the ZV1 in USB streaming mode. Do you get any sort of delay with the Cam Link? If not I'll invest in one. Thank you very much for your reply.
Hey there, I get zero delay with the Camlink 4k that is why I stuck with it instead of USB, Also I find the video quality to be a lot better too 👍
@@ColinScotland Thank you Colin I will go ahead and get that Camlink then. Good luck with your channel!
Hi Colin,
That video was so helpful thank you for recording. I have been on the fence about buying one.
Just wondering could you help me solve a query I had.
I teach live zoomed yoga classes but want to build up better quality content videos.
Currently I record the classes through zoom.
Do you know does the camera record locally or is there an option to record locally so you are not recording through zoom and hence getting potential lags from wifi.
Would so appreciate your help with answering this q!!
Thanks a mil
Hazel
Hi Hazel yes it has a slot for SD card so you can record directly to the camera 👍
@@ColinScotland Fantastic thanks so much for coming back to me so quickly Colin really appreciate it! So to confirm if you save it to the SD camera it won't take any internet lags? That would be amazing!!
@@theyogatreecommunity Yes that's correct :)
@@ColinScotland Amazing news thank you thank you :)

Great video! When on a Zoom meeting, what do you use for speakers and how do you avoid echo?
Thanks Javier. I just use my monitor or laptop speakers mostly. Sometime I use headphones but never had an issue with either? Except when joining from two devices in the same room
Do we need Camlink ? I thought one of the biggest selling point of ZV1 is that you can just connect directly to a computer without the need for an HDMI to USB converter?
This video was made before Sony released the webcam software. Now I believe you can use the USB and sony software to operate as a webcam although I haven't tried it myself
Hello,
Your video is good and I'm a videographer.
Do you know if you can stream 4k through hdmi or through usb?
Greetings from Geneva.
Vision 6D Thanks for the kind words 🙏. Yes I believe so. I’ve only used 1080p so far but in Ecamm Live there is a 4K stream option 👍
@@ColinScotland Thank you for your fast reply. We are equiped with 4k capture devices from Magewell. Do I understand it right, that you mean that HDMI output is 4K and that this was tested?
Vision 6D hello 👋 it does output 4K image over HDMI but I have not tested it streaming so not able to confirm. I use mine mostly for long zoom sessions and find it runs smoother when set to 1080p on my machine (13” MBP)
@@ColinScotland Thank you so much for this reply. This is for me key factor before purchase so I hope someone can confirm.
Have a great day.
Great video! Just ordered this camera. What mic and arm are you using? Sounds great
Thanks Linda, you'll love the ZV1! The mic is a Shure SM7B and the arm is the Rode PSA1 :)
Colin Scotland thank you so much, I’ve been working on setting up my ZV1 this weekend and was curious what you are using to mount your camera on and how close do you have it to your face? Any advice on best settings?
@@lindamassie8835 Hey Linda, awesome! I use a small tripod (around 12" high) so the camera is eye level when it's on my desk. It usually sits just over arms length away. Hope that helps :)
@@ColinScotland Yes! thank you
Do you know if you can record from the camera while you’re inside a zoom call? Or is that not possible
Hey Jake, that's a great question, and not one I know the answer too? I will try it and let you know
Hey Jake. YES! I just tried recording directly to the camera whilst in a zoom meeting and it worked :)
Colin Scotland thank you. Cheers Colin

Does the camera charge while you have it plugged in?
Yes provided you have it plugged in to a high enough power source. I have mine into the mains and it stays charged fine
Does your camera not overheating?
If its set to 4k yes, when it's plugged in and set to 1080p, no
What do you use for mic 🎤 🤔
Hey Brandon. I use a Shure SM7B through a Rodecaster Pro
I guess Colin's think alike.. ZV-1 when it first came out. Just bought a cheap $25 hdmi to usb capture card on amazon. I've tried OBS and webcam plugin, but it is clunky.
Hey Colin I agree OBS is so clunky. That’s why I opted for the Elgato Camlink adaptor. A film maker friend tells me Sony are planning a firmware update that will allow it to be used as a webcam just via USB soon so that could be interesting :)
Brother can we charge the camera while using it as webcam?
Hey there. Yes! It works best plugged in so you can use it for long periods of time without losing power 👍
HI, is there a cheaper option for the usb connection?
Hello, I’ve never used it but believe you can use Sony’s webcam software. The quality isn’t as good but it should work.
@@ColinScotland Thanks for replying!
The video on webcam seems off from audio, does that happen or did you recorded audio over the video on that part?
It was because I was recording into Ecamm live on my laptop and playing in zoom at the same time so there was a delay in the audio. I think I overwhelmed my laptop lol. Never have an issue otherwise 👊
Colin Scotland thank you this video is super helpful, and other than that there will be no delay if I recorded in OBS?
@@onlyonejavae2889 When I record directly into Ecamm live there is zero delay. The delay only happened here because I had zoom in the chain so you should be absolutely fine
Colin Scotland thank you very much 🙏🏼
My pleasure 🙏
How to setting zv-1 to zoom. Can u teach me step by step. Thanks
Yes, I've added it to my video creation list for you :)
@@ColinScotland So what are your ZV1 settings please Colin? Turn it to Movie Mode ... Set it to high to not get hot ... But what other settings have you tweaked for the colours etc? 1080p 25?

Yes!

I have sold my Sony ZV1 since making this video. Now using Continuity Camera feature to use the iPhone camera when Zooming away from my desk
How do you keep the battery running for more than 45 minutes? I bought one today but I worried it would shut off during the zoom meeting.
Events Food Craft Great question. The battery will die so you have to plug it in either to a nearby plug or to the USB of your computer. Then it runs for hours :)
why is your video choppy?????
I was recording in ecamm live and had zoom running at the same time on an old MBP so it didn’t like it I’m guessing
I tried this and it works for zoom, but not for WebEx! Argh!
I have no experience with WebEx so can't offer any help here I'm afraid

hi Colin. are you born again Christian?
I was once a Christian worship leader. Today, I draw inspiration from all corners of spirituality, not just Christianity. Just as Rumi once said, "The truth was a mirror in the hands of God. It fell, and broke into pieces. Everybody took a piece of it, and they looked at it and thought they had the truth." I'm on a quest to understand those myriad reflections.
