    Coming from 5D and looking into a7s mk ii and a7r mk ii I am seriously frustrated that I can't have a7s mk ii with 20 or so megapixels and backlit sensor

      Reasonable frustration but many Nikon owners still say the D700 is one of the best cameras ever made. I always hear "quality of pixels". Anyway, understandable gripe.

    I'm getting the a7rii for the automotive photography I do. I want as much sharpness and detail as possible.

  • @ConstantinSPurcea
    @ConstantinSPurcea 5 років тому

    I want both. One I already have for shooting video as I shoot a lot of work in low light, some as low as 104,900 ISO, so 3 stops away from max 409k. But I also shoot landscapes and I'd really love to someday print some of them and 42MP always retains more detail than 12MP, and it's also good if sometimes I need to do a multicamera, as both are Sony and both would match great.

  • @onegreenev

    Im just going to continue with my A7R and wait until the next model comes out unless I can get a killer deal on an A7RII. I really thought about the low light kicker but figured I don't really do enough low light imaging to warrant buying the A7SII. If they come out with a higher megapixel A7S III or something like that I may consider the low light beast. I may still go for the S model for doing microscope photography. Usually lousy light so the S model may be the key there. No need for super high megapixel there. But I want clean and crisp.

  • @daveperrin9408
    @daveperrin9408 4 роки тому

    I use the A7ii and love it. It allows you to crop more and not lose detail in your shot. Low light shooting is better with the A7sii but with good primes this isn't really a problem. So for me the A7rii is my choice.

    Cheers, Toby! I'm at a tipping point in investing in a decent camera that I'd like capability in for both film and stills.
    Several folk have recommended the RII to me because of this dual capability.
    I'm slightly put off by the over-heating issue (why would anyone be ok with this for such an expensive/high-end bit of kit)
    Also, with the number of cameras Sony releases, isn't it possible that in the next 12-18months there will be a new R camera that supersedes the mk2?

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  8 років тому +1

      +Nick Franks Always a possibility of new camera but if you buy from someone else - won't you be just as jealous :) 3.0 firmware seems to really have fixed the overheating option and how often do you need to recored 20 minute clips with 4k anyway? If you are looking for a strong hybrid- it is hard to find anything else better than the A7RII.

    I sold all my canon equipment and use Sony A7rii and its sony native lens.
    the eye auto focus and face auto focus works like a charms.
    no more focus recomposing with blurry image. Now all my image are tack sharp and shooting is alot faster.
    This face detection and eyes focus work in lowlight like a wedding reception ... with a flash mounted on , the A7rii sensor will "brighten up".
    technology have came so far today. We learn the basics and now technology make our life easier.
    Sony need to increase it lens choice, like a 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 and 135mm f2

    Hi Toby,
    I'm looking to buy either a A7RII (cheaper) or A7 III (newer).
    Saying I do 40% Video, 60% Photo, is 300 bucks worth it to get the A7III?

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  4 роки тому

      Hi Marshall - this is a tough call. I am really leaning toward to the a7iii because of the better ergonomics, better battery life and better AF for photos and video. $300 feels like an amount that is worth it to spend to get the better camera.

  • @Mrzippy3

    I went back and forth on which of these cameras to buy. I settled on the A7SII because of the low light. I also felt that I didn't need the Pixels cause once you got em then you have to store them. If I did this as my job perhaps I would choose differently. Thanks for the comparison. Excellent video.

      that doesnt even make sense becuase you dont have to shoot at 42 megapixel. And low light can be pulled of with a super crop 35 or lighting. Your sacrificing your Af AND COLOR OCNTRASTING.

  • @MistaFussichannel
    @MistaFussichannel 5 років тому

    The A7s is a scam. Lowlighting is its superiority but you sacrifice your AF, and superior photo quality. You can also have very close iso to the A7s if you do a crop35. I dont understand why the a7s has to exist except for consumerism

    Hi there! Apart from the dilemma about choosing between these two cameras I am concerned about the adapter for canon lenses choice... I heard that non of the adapters in the market are actually usable concerning automatic focus. However you say you prefer a7r ii for its better automatic focus so it means that the adapters actually work. Could you tell me which one are you using and you are happy with? Thanks a lot!!! :)

    Which one is better for Night time lapses, I moved from the Canon80D to Sony A7 (rubbish for the night lapses), and now I cant choose which one is better particular for Milky Way lapses... Before that video I was definitely for a king of low light A7Sii, but now I'm disappointed. Also the price is big deal for me A7sii I can buy slightly used for $2000 AUS, A7Rii -$2500Aus and A7II almost brand new only for $900Aus (I'm from Australia). My lapses are Ok and the lens is Samyang 14/2.8 but still not perfect, lot of noise even on 3200 ISO ((( and I decide to buy A7S ii which could help me with the noise problem.

    Great vid, best explanations between the distinctions separating the two. The lure of high ISO performance is strong but I fear the market has moved on from 12MP and as a Nikon shooter, at times frustrated with the high ISO performance of my D800E, perhaps I'll wait for the D5. The hell of it is in every other measure the D800E is a superlative RAW shooter, OK with JEPG's and a keeper for certain. Still in all if shooting for clients I'll tend to the higher resolution and perhaps the D5 will hit the sweet spot for my needs but dear God that price... Please keep up the great work Toby and hang onto that MP monster it will serve you well for some time!!!

    On a given sensor size, a lower megapixel count with bigger pixels will produce cleaner images. Also rolling shutter will decrease. Maybe the A7Sii isn't that good with photography, it is stunning with video. Wich, in our case, gives it a advantage! We use a Metabones adaptor to EF and Canon 24-70 F2.8, 70-200 F2.8 and a 50mm F1.2. Price/quality wasn't this good till now!
    Thumbs up for your great product updates!

    Having installed the 3.0 overheating firmware update? Has it totally resolved it?
    Another question:
    I have the A7ii and a6000 and shoot AVCHD for sermons in 1080p every Sunday. I plan for 4K in 8months. I shoot 40%video and 60%stills (and fusion) My last 3 jobs I had a7ii shooting video on tripod and A6000 shooting stills. I am thinking of 3 options: 1) Replace A7ii for A7Rii 2) A7ii+A7Sii 3) or cry once and replace A7ii with both Rii and Sii. I love the Rii but 3hr service shoot may not work with potential over heating at the back of my mind I love cropping in stills so A7Sii's 12MPs worrying. I could always by one and hire the other(which one) I know it's my choice, but I would value opinions on what you would do in my position. If anyone else can help. Much appreciated...

      +PhotoRec Toby Is the 1080p from the A7Rii just as nice as the original A7S 1080p? The reason I ask is that in some cases where a camera can record in 4K, the 1080p quality becomes unaccepable. I do primarily lifestyle/travel photography (no prints) + video. Currently I'm at about 70/30 (photo/video) but should eventually go to 40/60 with many of the projects I have lined up over the next year.
    I'm coming from a t2i so I'm obviously going to see a huge upgrade regardless of which I choose. But because I know my video needs are going to increase, I'm debating on just going with the a7sii. I just wish the megapixel count was slightly higher for downgrading.

I now have some cash in my pocket and just can not decide what route to take. I am trying to decide if i should replace the 5d iii with a sony A7r ii or buy a sony A7s ii & another 5d iii since i have the glass. I have a canon XA 20 for video but i want to move to 4k since i have also purchased a inspire 1 pro that shoots 4k i want footage to be the same qaulity. So i am selling the XA 20 audio isnt a issue i have H6 with rode NTG 2 and sennhieser G3. Im just not sure if the A7r ii with metabones is better then 5d iii and im also worried about the AF with my lenses not being what i am used to.
    The lenses are all BN in the box still so i could make a full switch but i just cant find e mount lenses that are what im used to using thought about waiting for the G master e mounts but dang i thought canon was proud sony is asking a arm and leg for the 70-200 at 3500.00. I also have a 7d ii that i use for action and wildlife it was at home so i still have it. Any help and suggestions would be great. Sony needs to update the A7, and give it a better focusing system and 4K video, and a fully articulating touch screen, for people who want a great all around camera, that is in the middle of the A7r ll and A7s ll with 24 mp, personally I would like to get the A7r ll, but I am holding out for a articulating touch screen, and if Sony doesn't give it on the A7r lll, I will give up on switching to Sony, and maybe Cannon or Nikon will come out with a great FF mirrorless sometime in the next century, or maybe a company like Olympus who has had an articulating touch screen for over five years already

    What adapter are you using on the rII? Is it fast and accurate? There aren't many 'real' good lens options in sony's lineup and third party adapters (well, and even sony's) are said to be unable to take full advantage of sony mirrorless autofocusing capabilities, either because they lack phase detection support and take too much time to focus (making them unusable for professional purposes) or because they only use a small fraction of the whole bunch of autofocus points on the sensor. Myself I own a sony nex 5n, a VG900 sony full frame camcorder (too expensive then, considering what it can do, which I learned too late) and a sony a6000, and would really like to have one of these awesome new mirrorless full frame bodies... I've learned Sony products are mostly overprized and overall quality of some of their supposedly professional aimed products and most lenses is quite low, compared to other brands... If only I had the money to spend on all this fancy zeiss glass! It's very frustrating. I want to believe in them and would like to keep on going mirrorless but they are really giving me a hard time. I'm trying to do video so I'm even considering moving to canon.

    Ugh, I'm even more conflicted lol, I just need it for pictures and mainly video (filming in low light is probably only once a week and capturing pics in low light is once a year), and I only print pics at least once a year (largest print ever for me is probably 8.5" x 11"), please help me decide which one is better for me? (Price is not an issue)

    why everybody hypes the super35 mode ? this mode is totaly bullshit in terms of fast lenses an bokeh ! i dont wont to loose al my bokeh with this crop mode, so the super35 mode is USELESS

    • @photorectoby

      +NDSoundMedia Really? With a good fast lens you should still have a nice shallow depth of field look. If you don't - then don't use it- the difference between the two modes is negligible.

    +PhotoRec Toby, i recently switched from the RII to the SII, because my buddy and I shoot a lot of video. By heart, I love photography, street, portait, on the fly stuff. In the vid you explain the differences, but did I make a complete mistake by jumping to a video powerhouse? I have yet to try my SII out, am I really losing out on good resolution by dumping my RII? Excuse my simple questions, and my not so vast knowledge on Sony, I used to shoot with Nikon.

    • @photorectoby

    @AshBashVids 8 років тому

    I'll wait until the tech gets cheaper, battery life is improved and AF performance gets better. Until then, I'll not be moving towards mirrorless yet, but I am considering a fujifilm one as a second body to use old FD lenses.

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  8 років тому +1

      +Mister Shledge What system are you shooting with right now? It is true, next generation should be VERY good.. so will the one after that and :)

    • @AshBashVids
      @AshBashVids 8 років тому

      Canon, I currently own a 6D.
      To be honest the biggest one is battery life 350ish shots vs. nearly 1000 shots means I have to spend less time charging and carry less batteries.
      I can honestly live with worse AF performance when you consider focus peaking and such, but it would be useful to have, especially if I aim to use it in low light.
      I want to get one as a 2nd body still since they do have good advantages with using older lenses, and using FD lenses without modification is very lucrative especially that they can be got cheaper than their EF counterparts.
      Sony's offerings is promising but it's a bit out of my budget at the moment and doesn't provide much over my 6D for what I need, but I will eventually make the jump when the tech develops and gets cheaper.

    So a year later... which do you think of your R2...has firmware fixed everything. Specifically the rolling shutter on the R2 is reportedly quite bad. For photo there is no comparison but for video you end up using the R2 in crop mode which basically turns it into an 18MP camera.

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  7 років тому

      I still love my R2 for photos. Crop mode on the A7RII does not turn it into an 18MP camera - it simply crops it more but you still get fantastic 4k footage. The quality out of the camera is fantastic for video and photos - nothing else out there as good BUT I shoot most of my video these days with the GH5 because it is easier and almost as good looking.

    • @puddytat62
      @puddytat62 7 років тому

      Yeah the GH 5 has a nice sweet spot but you have to drop some coin just to get a metabones for canon lens... at least for my needs. So I guess you'd still recommend the A7R vs A7S for video... thats not so common a position.

    I really think part of the reason they didn't give the good focusing system to the S II is because most serious videographers don't use Autofocus and manually focus everything. Just a thought!

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  8 років тому

      +Cooper Spaulding I actualy think it has more to do with keeping the sensor as pure as possible for that clean high iso - baking in more phase detection onto the chip takes away from light gathering. . . I think. It is true that many serious videographers MF only but I am running into more and more that appreciate the better AF systems and use them for their work- wedding videographers mostly is who I run into, some event guys too.

    • @Coops12241
      @Coops12241 8 років тому +1

      +PhotoRec Toby That's actually a pretty good point too! I agree with some people starting to use the AF systems now. Especially with "run and gun" type of situations when a dedicated focus puller is needed and they don't have one. Throwing on an AF system like Canon's Dual Pixel would do a great job.
