    In 2013 Guillermo Del Toro released the Kaiju classic, Pacific Rim. It was a great movie and a promising start to a new franchise. But after just one sequel, an anime show, and some comics, the franchise has gone quiet with no third film in the works. So let's talk about why the first film did right, and where Uprising went wrong.

      Read Occam’s razor (unless you’re super anti newt/hermann) I consider it the true sequel. Basically takes the idea that some kaiju were left on earth after the breach was closed, and the ksci duo are still connected to that hivemind and are effecting each other. Basically tackles the idea of how connecting with the hivemind like they did in the first movie in a much better way than “uprising” did

    The sad part is that a lot of great ideas were there. Mako's adoptive brother? Newt getting brainwashed? An evil Jaeger? Hybrid drones? A fusion Kaiju? All could have been used to great effect. But they completely botched the execution, killed Mako, replaced her with a boring white teen girl with the exact same backstory and added the trololololo song.

    The biggest issue with Pacific Rim is that there is clear disinterest in making a good film like the first one. Pacific rim uprising tried too hard to be like evangelion and other 90's anime where, which hurt the plot and aesthetics. The only three characters that actually returned were either killed off way too soon or acted differently. I think the biggest disappointment however is how it was placed in the wrong hands. Aside from pacific rim uprising, the only other media we've received is Pacific Rim The Black, an animated miniseries that tried to fix the problem uprising had, but somehow made its issues worse at the same time. How can you make a show that centers around two kids piloting a robot and go on an adventure with a boy that was secretly a kaiju superweapon? It strayed too far from the concept and as much as I hate to say this, the idea of a franchise is dead. Del toro stated that he was not interested in making another movie and legendary might not want to make a sequel as it would be too risky in the financial sense.

    • @Kaiju-bm4ts
      @Kaiju-bm4ts 5 місяців тому +2

      Godzilla's franchise has been going back and forth between weight and scale far longer to the point fans can take it or leave it either way. Is Godzilla 98 for example a better G flick cause it had more weight than let's just say gvk? Absolutely not. Is the godzilla animated series worst than the godzilla anime trilogy cause the latter has weight to godzilla but the former doesn't? Absolutely not. Godzilla works regardless of the style.
      PR is an original IP that needs Guillermo's style to work, otherwise it just doesn't work as PR if it tries to do any other style.

    • @nkeneca

      @@Kaiju-bm4ts The problem is that those were distinct different movies, series. another thing i never see mentioned about uprising is that none of the jaegers there have a nationality they're based on. a lot of the personality derived from the jaegers in the original was based on the ideas that people had about those countries and their cultures. for example; cherno alpha is aggressively russian with not only its theme music, but also the feeling of its WWII inspired design and heavy emphasis on armor and brute force. whereas, most of the jaegers in uprising don't really have that cultural identity, and instead come off more as a vague idea of a jaeger than a specific identity. makes sense that people often compare them to power rangers.

    What happened with Universal as far as Guillermo del Toro and Zakk Penn's "Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom" script was concerned was Universal had budgetary concerns overt it. They ordered it to an overhaul and didn't secure the sound stages in Toronto two weeks before it was to go camera. Del Toro and Penn attempted to address the distributor's concerns with a pair of re-writes when Universal pulled the film off their release schedule. Wanda may have wanted the film to shoot in China, true enough, but by the time Universal made its decision, the window for del Toro to helm the picture had lapsed and he walked, moving on onto prepping "The Shape Of Water" since he contractually obligated to do so. Incidentally, this was the third time Universal screwed over del Toro over film budgets ("Hellboy III"" first, "At The Mountains Of Madness" , touted as an R rated flick starring Tom Cruise, second and "PR: Maelstrom").
    Several months later, enter John Boyega and his production partner's company and Steven S DeKnight with their revamped version of Maelstrom's script and "PR 2" was back on the boards. Universal botched its marketing campaign from the get-go, by sequentially progressing to reveal the film's strongest visual effects scenes in the trailers and sneak peek clips. Aside from die-hard fans, why should the general audience of movie goers show up and see it in theatres when the movie's best parts had been spoiled.., well before its release.

And so little by little, they started putting together this and they said 'Oh, he got it from the precursors.' The guys that control the kaiju. And then we found out that the precursors are us thousands of years in the future" Del Toro explained. "They're trying to terraform, trying to re-harvest the earth to survive. Wow. im worried the monsterverse is slowly going down the pacific rim path. everything you said about uprising about lost scale, not feeling like its connected to the world of pacific rim 1 and the cinematography and lightweight of the jaegars is what the current adam wingard godzilla and king kong movies have felt like for me. except people are responding to those movies positively whereas uprising was slammed hard for the same things. i dont understand why

    • @Theo-bk6qj
      @Theo-bk6qj 6 місяців тому +2

      scale was never an issue in the Godzilla franchise. Showa Era Godzilla for example seems to be an inspiration for Monsterverse in terms of the monster fight scene. Unlike Pacific Rim, Monsterverse is much more consistent in terms of their own key elements (some social commentary a bit similar to the old movies like environmentalism, anti-war message etc...) while Pacific Rim 2 is basically like Michael Bay's Transformer but without the grittiness and the intense action scenes (which Pacific Rim 1 manage to achieve in its own style).

    • @Kaiju-bm4ts
      @Kaiju-bm4ts 6 місяців тому +3

      Godzilla's franchise goes back and forth so much with weight and scale it hardly matters anymore, fans can take it or leave at this point. PR is a IP that has less variety than godzilla and only works if you're mimicking the first film. Meanwhile godzilla works regardless of how you use him. People slam uprising cause it goes against what the first movie did. People don't slam godzilla for doing X Y and Z cause it doesn't go against anything he does most of the time.

    • @theamazingwebhead6453
      @theamazingwebhead6453 6 місяців тому +1

      There’s a good reason the scale is lost with Godzilla, it’s because most Godzilla movies now, Godzilla and the other Kaiju are around other Kaiju more often, we don’t get the human POV of slow, heavy movements because we’re not looking at the pov of other humans now, we’re following the Kaiju for the most part, which are the same size, we still know they’re big, but it’s way more action packed now because we’re following the Kaiju with other Kaiju. And also what the other guy says, with Godzilla, it doesn’t really matter, cuz Godzilla always goes back and forth and sideways and all of that, nothing you do with him is really out there because of how he’s been used in a variety of different ways

  • @zombiedalekweck2243
    @zombiedalekweck2243 5 місяців тому +1

    I mean, it's important to note that a lot of things Del Toro set out were acted upon, and tbh... It was just fumbled...
    But... A lot of the ideas from the second movie are actually interesting. Don't burn me alive.
    But genuinely, with a more seasoned director and a lot more DARK (everything being set in the DAY does NOT help), I think it could've been good.
    Some things that need to be done should've been:
    1. Kajius are believed to have been defeated! So, have humanity turn inwards on itself. Have them begun using Yeagers to combat humans, this would lead to small yeagers that are designed to work alongside infantry and vehicles! Scrapper, despite how stupid the idea is, does make sense for what the militaries of the world would produce, albeit higher qualities. These would become the norm. Show us how yeagers would be used if we can't base the story on kajiu for a while, have the yeagers be THE force, pin them firmly on the story to keep people invested. You can show the yeagers by having the US & NATO use them to police the Middle East and fight any enemy acquired yeagers or assert supremacy. Don't get rid of the larger ones, though. They can serve as the Battleships, the dominant strong ship designed to destroy all little ships and battle other battleships. Maybe show these off in military parades, showing us perhaps the yeagers we'll see fighting later on in the movie.
    2. Don't kill OG characters in such a way, btw that Mako dying that way was the original plan Del Toro had. Don't degrade them but still have them there. If you kill them, have them die heroically.
    3. Have the yeagers be mechanical semi-slow attackers, similar to the first movie, this is a no brainer.
    4. Don't kill Obsidian Fury off, I genuinely do like the idea of Kajiu controlled mechs, the second brains of kajiu could play a major role and instead of being a plot device it could be THE major thing. The designs are pretty cool for the kajiu yeagers later on tbh, maybe have the kajiu yeagers build themselves up to look like their kajiu counterparts, maybe they use dead fish and animals to look more fleshy, so you get these grotesque mimics who use skin and stuff and merge it with their metal. Now Obsidian Fury should be the MAIN villain yeager villain, of course you'll need to figure out the kajiu brains but... Again... Just have Mako succed in sending the message, possibly by just using Gipsy Avenger to scan, and you can have the SCIENCE TEAM figure it out. Now, if you want to kill Mako, have her be the pilot for Gipsy Avenger, maybe alongside Mr. Protag (probably going to need one, hell you can make it the same guy) then have a similar scene to the movie playout, with Obsidian Fury appearing. Have it be at sunset and long into the negotiations... So you get a dim, dark appearance. And then have them fight. However, have Gipsy start to lose and then have Mr. Protag get ejected away as Mako pilots it by herself to protect her little bro, as she isn't stupid and knows they're about to die. You can have Mr. Protag get a satisfying revenge on Obsidian Fury in a rebuilt Gipsy Avenger. Fulfilling its name as Gipsy AVENGER.
    5. You can still do the whole Newt is evil thing. Just do it better and less cringe worthy. Got no advice on how to fix that other than it HAS potential to be an interesting idea. Just present it more as a split personality, like REALLY lean in to it. Show us our beloved Newt is still there, and he's trying his best to fight.
    6. No children. Child actors suck. Like... Not their acting, but in action film, you just KNOW they WON'T DIEEEEE. So, just no. Don't include them.
    7. You can have the Pan-Pacific Defence Corps still exist. Just lean into the fact they're merely there for ceremonial, cleanup, and "JUST INCASE!!!" purposes. Do have them save the day, perhaps show that the Battleship Yeagers I said earlier aren't equipped well enough to fight Kajiu, so they end up failing when they inevitably show up. Maybe have one of them align with the PPDC, so we get a cool comparison.
    8. Okay, so... Guessing the whole Kajiu Yeager thing won't last... Perhaps instead of those being the MAIN villains... Use cloned Kajiu? Because it's a studio, and they might deem cyborg mechs versus just mechs boring. Perhaps have a pair of three cloned kajiu show up. These would be made by the main villain, Newt or not... Who would use their funds to pay... A group of THE KAJIU WORSHIPPERS, who were AWFULLY underused! To create them in one of the unused PPDC bases. These kajius goal is to get to the marina trench or another deep point on earth and create a new funnel gateway. How? Uhh... I don't know, perhaps have one of Kajiu have a unique power to create tears in the fabric of time and space, have them be unstable so they close after themselves... But the realisation of what's happening is that the deeper the tears are, the longer lasting they are... Maybe they require gravity to pin it... So if they got to the deepest point on earth... The Precursors could pin the tear open, with their own planets gravity and begin the invasion again. That's a silly idea, but you gotta suspend your disbelief a little bit... You can have Obsidian Fury assist these guys, as the remaining Yeager Kajiu are held back by the national owned yeagers, with them being better suited to fight other yeagers. This, in a way, is to mimic the first movie, where it's the Yeagers trying to get to the Mariana trench. Instead, it's the Kajiu trying to get there. Once the good guys win, or don't, since you can always set up a third movie. You can cheer and stuff. Have Newt or the villain not captured, so if the good guys win, you can set up a third movie, maybe have some of the Kajiu Yeagers survive as well to give the PPDC reason to exist again.
    9. Oh yeah, extra runtime. A sequel needs equal or more runtime than it's original to be a success. This is obvious and a MUST.
    Hope these ideas are good or just gave you a laugh at how stupid they are!

    For me to summarize the issues with screen play, the first was good because you had that anticipation for every movement and could never be certain if that jab or hook or sword would reach the kaiju in time for it to count. Uprising made everything far too quick and fluid, and now the robotic flaws were lacking, removing that anticipation for the slowness of everything, and that’s what made the first so great. Anticipation

It is initially a simple story that was promotional material for the anime running at the time, but it got a sequel in the 90s, and started to really get insane. Also created the Gainax pose and heavily inspired Gurren Lagann. Unfortunately it is one of those manga with only fan translations and no official ones aside from a spin off.
