Judging by the time right now, The Zodiac Killer is surely died. Maybe he is already, Arthur Leigh Allen.
I searched some pictures of the original Darlene Ferrin and Mike Mageau and it actually surprises me that these actors were close to spotting them on! David Fincher sure knows how to pay arduous attention to details.
While I'll admit that 2007 was a great year for movies, it's criminal that this film didn't receive a single Oscar nomination. Utterly ridiculous! Fincher's masterpiece (thus far).
Just came from the end scene of the movie and realise that Fincher used Donovan at the end of the movie and here at the beginning. It's like the song is always reminding this guy of that night. Hurdy Gurdy man used at the end was perfect as it has an eery twisted feel to it. Now having realised it was playing at the beginning when the girl got murdered it freaks me out even more.
Yeah, Donovan composed the song with the intention to elicit peaceful mediation, but, for me, thanks to first noticing it in this movie, it possesses an inextricably sinister and eerie quality.
This movie really got me into true crime. People are banking hard on true crime stories now through podcasts and UA-cam videos but most forget the human lives that were taken in a killers wake. The "Fuck off and die" is legitimate comedy gold. First time I saw that, I laughed literally forty five minutes into this movie. Amazing movie, really creepy vibe to it, which makes it so good.
Drew Heavens the "fuck off and die" part was funny, even the characters laughed moron, the guy didn't laugh at the death scene he laughed at the fuck off and die, get it through your head
+Gonzalo Funes Actually, even in the late 1960s, typically men like Mageau would not have used that word. It was at the time still considered very taboo. It was not a part of conversation at all then. Men like Charles Manson would definitely have said it. And they would not have used FUBAR either, that wasn't until the early 1990s.
4:55- The attention to detail is insane here. I never noticed that they replicate the odd detail from this case where the female victim’s wrist toggles the car’s turn signal after the final shot.
at 1:13 you do see a black car as they pass through the parking lot, Michael does mention later in this scene that he thought he saw the car at the drive-in
This film reminds me that society was getting sick back in the sixties and that mental illness was getting to be a bigger problem than people want to admit. The random nature of the killings is what is most terrifying. There’s no rhyme or reason to any of it. And like terrorism, it’s almost impossible to stop. When someone decides to do something violent and they have weapons, how do you stop them?
Crime in every major category skyrocketed once they replaced prayer and the Bible with the religion of Darwinism in public schools. Throw in Alfred Kinsey's vile books of lies plus the Cultural Revolution ... and here we are where a supreme court judge refuses to define what a woman is. Enjoy the godless utopia.
@@anthonyvincent804 Yeah, but people ignore the signs and red flags, don’t they?. And that’s includes the authorities. These day the Terrorists even proclaim their intentions on Social media platforms. Frequently they announce what they are planning to do on the day they do it. It makes it difficult to stop. Then later others say, I knew there was something off or off about them they way they kept to themselves. Or were not friendly or anti social. You aren’t going to call the police if someone is just anti social. So it does happen at times but it’s very difficult to stop these people planning violence. And that’s sad because innocent people including children get hurt or killed needlessly.
The whole film is spectacular, in particular the visuals. Bringing that time and place to life so seamlessly you hardly notice it is amazing. I was here (well, San Jose at least) during this time, remember it well and all the panic and fascination among the population, and I could feel myself slipping back to when I was a 12 year old kid almost immediately. The film is packed with CGI, but mostly you never notice it. For example, all the blood and bullet hits in this scene are 100% computer generated. Gives the production total control over how it looks, and allows for faster setup when doing re-takes since there's no clean-up and reapplication of makeup effects needed. And the top-down following of the cab through streets and past buildings that no longer exist is mind-bending.
Rarely do horror films scare me. But this scene scared the living shit out of me, aside from being based on real crimes, the way its shot and acted feels genuinely terrifying
@@Finnnio The actor who played Arthur Leigh Allen was John Carroll Lynch, and no, that's not him voicing Zodiac in this scene. They hired different actors to play/voice Zodiac for each scene because of the varying descriptions of him from eyewitnesses.

@@aidiknocles i know this comment is like 2 years old, but I just wanna state that this is almost exactly what happened in the real incident. One of the only differences is that the car didn't return until 10 minutes later.
This movie definitely gave me a new appreciation for Hurdy Gurdy Man. Probably not Donovan's intent, but I definitely have a much darker interpretation of the song's lyrics after seeing the way it was used here.
The beginning of this movie always cheers me up.. not out of some sadistic pleasure.. I think I figured it out. It's a combination of the fireworks, the 1960s, that Three Dog Night song, and seeing a goofy guy with such a beautiful woman (one reason why FRIENDS was so popular, I bet). Plus, she's driving.
i love the attention to detail in the cars at the Burger joint and in general. because if you look at the cars with their lights on you can see that most don’t have side marker lights because they’re older vehicles and the mandatory for vehicles to have side markers was establish on January 1st 1968. this happened in July 4th 1969. you can only see 1 car with the amber marker lights at 1:24 and the teens in the truck that throw the fire crackers at the couple. indicating that they’re newer vehicles.
It was obvious that Darlene was scared big time of whoever had pulled their vehicle in behind hers. What a tragic event for Mike to have suffered and live through.
It's implied during (3:20 - 3:36) that Darlene knew the identity of the Zodiac Killer. Was this an actual fact from Mike Mageau's statement...or was this something that Fincher included solely for dramatic purposes?...
What if when Mike asked Darlene who was that, instead of saying 'don't worry about it' what if she said, "it's just some guy I know, his names Arthur but everyone calls him Leigh." In the end, Mike survives his attack and tells the police this information. I wonder how things would've played out differently. O.o
I lived in Vallejo from 2008-2011. I was 5-9. My dad told me about this killer so many times. We’d drive down this dark road up in the hills that the zodiac killer would drive down and stalk people. I always loved slasher movies even as a little kid way back then so it always felt so fitting to know my own home town had a serial killer.
It’s sick and surreal to think that u actually have serial killers out there who get a kick out of doing shyt like this. Like what’s the point at the end of the day, how did u lose ur mind to the point u can do something like this to innocent ppl.
I think they get a thrill out of the thought of not being caught and a sense of power. While others enjoy the attention they get from the press as was the case with the Zodiac. Even if they get caught they are satisfied because they get to be in the history books so to speak. In other words they are egotistical attention seekers and for them murder is like a “get famous quick” method.
Great movie. 1969 was 38 years before this movie was made, so they make a point to really take you back to that year so it feels real and not just something from long ago. Showing Americans celebrating July 4th outside their homes, going to a bustling burger joint, showing the teens talking, they send you back in time so you can appreciate just how real and horrific the murder was.
I'm dying for the day this film gets incorporated into classic movie montages, should the day ever come where it gets out of underrated status. Lately I've been fantasizing about all the little moments that could have been used as Oscar clips. Paul watching Robert draw the Zodiac costume. Visual Effects being noted by the opening shot of SF or the cab investigation scene. The art department being honored for their not unlike 'The Apartment' set. John Carroll Lynch's interview as he Mark, and Robert compete for Best Supporting Actor. And then no matter how those categories turn out, Fincher walks off with Best Director, his opening shot of Vallejo representing the greatest film of the millennium thus far!
This could have been avoid if she just drove off as soon as she heard it turn back from the distance, she decided to undermine the situation when the car was acting suspicious and froze when she heard the car turn around several yards away, that is why she ended up getting killed.
The opening scene itself deserves an academy award.

@@Seashellsbytheseashore21 I think so too. And the way he says "you creeped us out" he was not afraid of the killer. I wonder why he has not spilled the beans if Leigh Allen is dead?
@@yosemite735 He said that because in that moment he thought Z was simply a cop because of the flashlight. That's why as soon as the flashlight first shines on them he tells Darlene to take out her wallet, in order to show him their IDs.
THE OPENING SCENE ON THIS MOVIE IS SO BEAUTIFUL
The "Fuck off and die" is legitimate comedy gold. First time I saw that, I laughed literally forty five minutes into this movie. Amazing movie, really creepy vibe to it, which makes it so good.
what is funny? this is true

@@sethcostello3941 lmao I don’t remember commenting that. That was 3 years ago holy

4:55- The attention to detail is insane here. I never noticed that they replicate the odd detail from this case where the female victim’s wrist toggles the car’s turn signal after the final shot.
that song is sooo good for this shit..
One the greatest scenes in the history of cinema.

That freaked me out when I heard that
at 1:13 you do see a black car as they pass through the parking lot, Michael does mention later in this scene that he thought he saw the car at the drive-in
This is a movie, not the Zapruder film.
Omg your right Darlene even subtly noticed the car and straight away as she sees it she says it’s too crowded. That’s was a good spot.
It's so horrible that this actually happened! It's terrible that no one was found guilty of these terrible crimes!
Now imagine these crimes happening weekly in your country.
Amazing film...Fincher at his finest
Usually they tell people first or have tons of red flags as we’ve seen from many of these cases. Not always but many times could have been stopped.
This is what ya call your basic very well made masterpiece right here.
The police call at 5:34 is the actual 911 call from the ‘69 murder. Gotta love Fincher’s attention to detail
Really!?
No it's not its the voice of the actor who played author leigh allen you can clearly hear that it's the same
@@seanjohn2312 it's the same conversation word for word
@@Finnnio The actor who played Arthur Leigh Allen was John Carroll Lynch, and no, that's not him voicing Zodiac in this scene. They hired different actors to play/voice Zodiac for each scene because of the varying descriptions of him from eyewitnesses.
It’s the transcript of the call, not the actual voice of zodiac though.
I love the opening neighborhood scene with Easy To Be Hard playing while everyone is in the front yards of their idyllic mid century suburban ranch homes celebrating the fourth. Fireworks going off, coolers and barbecues and chairs sitting out. Kids riding their bikes, people laughing and talking.
Yeah
Totally oblivious to the terror that's about to take hold.
This film is so moody and atmospheric and has spot-on period detail.
That "good... bye" at the end, you can truly see where the Riddler got his inspiration from
It's very obvious the inspiration was the Zodiac killer lol.

4:55 is just incredible, coldest Fincher scene ever, Hurdy Gurdy Man is the perfect song for this masterpiece film.

This movie is a masterpiece. Director, actors, script etc. very good. Also, I think the best opening scene belongs to this movie. The song playing in the background (Easy To Be Hard), the cityscape... seriously good.

All she had to say was "That might be that creepy guy Lee from my party" and it'd be a wrap
She didn't say that because there WAS no creepy guy from the party named Lee. This is such an amazing film but it's practically a work of fiction.
Btw, Georgie Boy, it wasn't an assassination. They weren't the Kennedys.
It was obvious that Darlene was scared big time of whoever had pulled their vehicle in behind hers. What a tragic event for Mike to have suffered and live through.
One of the most fascinating
Serial killers in my opinion he didn't chop them up or eat them just plain and simply killed them on the spot and left
The scary thing is he shot them and he called 911 and told the operator that he did it but he knew they would not know who he was. Scary.
This must've been so traumatic for Mageau to watch.
That phone call is so haunting
It's implied during (3:20 - 3:36) that Darlene knew the identity of the Zodiac Killer. Was this an actual fact from Mike Mageau's statement...or was this something that Fincher included solely for dramatic purposes?...
Probably thought it was her husband
If I remember right, they suspected that she actually knew him through someone else. That is if it actually is Arthur Leigh Allen, but we don't know.
She mentons a guy named richard would kill her if he saw her with another guy. Some people think she was referring to richard gaikowski
@@tomasgaspar8065 or Richard Hoffman
Yea the whole thing about the painting party was real
What if when Mike asked Darlene who was that, instead of saying 'don't worry about it' what if she said, "it's just some guy I know, his names Arthur but everyone calls him Leigh." In the end, Mike survives his attack and tells the police this information. I wonder how things would've played out differently. O.o
This was the longest and mysterious movie I've ever seen in my life
I lived in Vallejo from 2008-2011. I was 5-9. My dad told me about this killer so many times. We’d drive down this dark road up in the hills that the zodiac killer would drive down and stalk people. I always loved slasher movies even as a little kid way back then so it always felt so fitting to know my own home town had a serial killer.
Ummm....maybe...your Dad...?...Nevermind.
I have a similar thing where I live. A serial killer was caught with 11 bodies in his house like 3 miles away from me in 2009.

Is this one of the greatest scenes in cinema history ? Yes !
One of my favorite openings in all of cinema.
Damn zodiac went back and back
there is one report that says there was a hangup phone call at the Ferrins home just after this

This could have been avoid if she just drove off as soon as she heard it turn back from the distance, she decided to undermine the situation when the car was acting suspicious and froze when she heard the car turn around several yards away, that is why she ended up getting killed.
