Nice job! Got a bit nervous on that test dive. 😬 Also the little rising suns and stars on the map are indeed airfields. If you zoom in on them you can see the airfield drawn on the map! Pretty cool feature of the mod.

Love this game! I used to play it religiously many years ago, though haven't played for years until recently. This Christmas my teenage son received a gaming pc with a pretty solid graphic card. First thing I did when he was asleep was download SH4, visit subsim, and apply this mod. I am in love and happy to be patrolling the Pacific again. Nice to be back!
That's such a great story! I never seem to get tired of this game, no play through is ever the same as another. It's good to know people still come back to it after so many years!

Have been playing this game on and off since it first came out in 2007. Loading MODs is another story. Never could get the hang of it.
How did you apply this mod so easily? At least it sounds that way from your post..lol.
I know you might not see this 3 years after you uploaded this but as an American I got a good chuckle when you pronounced Davison in a non American pronunciation. Like the vid!
Glad you're enjoying my content! And yeah, I have a lot of American friends and family and pretty much everything I say makes them laugh.
I'm pretty sure the salmon had a crush depth of 500ft in mind when they built it, but they only tested to 250ft. I think they also did the same thing with the other classes of submarine built around the same period as the salmon.
I think you're probably right, even early on sub crews seemed aware they could go beyond their test depth fairly comfortably. I wouldn't want to push my luck though!
Former USN submariner here. Tests depths are always conservative, the idea being that under normal circumstances you don't want to risk damaging the hull or equipment exposed to sea pressure.

That gives you a tremendous advantage cause the Japanese aren't going to expect you to be able to get that deep.

Hey Kairos let me tell ya somethin funny about the Uss Seal, she was attacking a convoy near Palau on her way home to Freemantle aka Perth, she fired her torpedoes, but missed suddenly a Freighter named the Boston Maru either rammed the Sub or collided with it and didn’t know that it was under it, anyways during the ram or collision she sustained damage by the Seal’s periscope and it actually caused significant damage to the hull and funnily enough she sank due to the Sub’s periscope which is a bit funny if u think of it instead of using the crappy mk14 she sank by the cause of a periscope, documents later down the line confirmed the that indeed the Boston Maru was sunk by the Periscope, after that the Seal survived a four hour depth charge attack

Rising Sun? That one in the name of this video made me wonder if they have finally made an IJN campaign for Silent Hunter.
No, unfortunately. It was a reference to the FOTRSU mod. Someone really should make a proper IJN campaign mod though.

Because I found out some people made campaign for British sub (at least for Mediterranean) for this game (SHIV) and I thought I saw that in some mod for SHIII, you get to play as a British submarine too. What makes modders shun IJN? I would say there is not even one percent chance they are gonna get jumped by fourteen year old American cancel gangsters so what are they afraid of?
I play FOTRSU, and you should get the fleetboat interior mod. It has the officers quarters and ward room up in the forward battery, and the S-boats now have a complete interior. The more recent version of FOTRSU also have better damage models. The glass gauges will shatter, and condesnation will build on them, as well as surfaces in the control room.
I tried using that mod once, but had trouble getting it to run. Maybe I'll have to try install it again on my new PC.
6:08 The Watch Crew's lounge is for the deck watch, when you're in danger of a depth charge attack you're supposed to move the deck watch to the lounge otherwise the deck watch will take damage from the depth charges.
Oberon Class Submarines? Did your dad serve with the Royal Navy or the Royal Canadian Navy?
Yeah I figured that's what the lounge was for, it's similar to RFB. I need to be sure I don't forget to put the men in there!
And my Dad is British born, but he worked as a technician for the Royal Australian Navy in the 1980s. He tells me those Oberons were good boats.

As for your question, I'm not sure about specific missions, as I always play campaigns, but there is a mode that let's you play a single patrol at different times during the war, not sure how many options there are though.
U should really take part in the naval battles around the islands of new Georgia and bougainville in 1943
It would certainly be an interesting experiment, though I'm not sure how many of those battles the game features. RSRD is definitely the mod for that kind of thing.
KairoS the is the problem with SH4, it might not have those battles, but u can at least take the uss seal to the battle of Kolombangara, kula gulf, empress Augusta bay, Blackett strait, Vella lavella, etc. anywhere u want dude and btw I heard there is something wrong with your computer? Am I right or wrong? If so when is your next SH4 episode and patrols I am really lovin your series dude, I mean come on I really love when people just use the same sub for the entire war.
The Philipines are on the other side of the International Date Line from Pearl Harbor. so, It WAS December 8 there, when it was December 7, in Hawaii.

To be fair it wouldn't be that difficult of a guess that the Japanese would be invading the Philippines at this point.
As far as I know every mod trigger maru , rising sun , TWOS has a percentage between 20-40 % crush depth for example playing with US subs ur crush depth might be 300 ft or 400 ft but with this random percentage u can go 450 , 500 ft etc. from what I understand from the guys on subsim, every uboat had diferent crush depths so was guessing game :)
Oh cool, that's good to know. A bit of randomness is always good for extra realism.

I've actually never played SH5, but I picked it up for $5 on Steam recently. So if I get into the game I might consider it!

Regarding the safe diving depth of the US subs, I never understood why the listed 'test depth' was so conservative. Their subs could almost double that number if they had to. For comparison the German Uboats would regularly go below 200 meters (650+ ft).

As for the test depth, I think the risks involved were probably enough to encourage the conservative approach. Submarines are expensive, and crews can't easily be rescued if something goes wrong. Of course, in wartime it's a very different story!
250 for the type, 20% more safety factor built in + or - 5%.
Nice video! Just installed the mod to attempt follow your missions as much as I can. So far have a question about those green circles around the patrol area. How you get those circles my mod is the as yours, but is there any other to load ?
Hi Juan. The green circles should automatically appear for missions when you need to patrol an area. I only have the FOTRSU mod installed, so if the circles aren't appearing for you it's probably a bug with the game. I'm not sure how to fix it, except perhaps to try reinstalling the mod.
@@kairos4486 Many thanks for your reply. I checked up my FOTRSU release and it is FOTRSU Ultmate 1.1. This I downloaded on last July 18th from Subsim.com as the latest. indeed it does not crash and runs quite well. I´ll keep on with the war missions at first to get use to the game; then after will start the Uboat campaign which believe could be easier for beginners on FORTSU. Thanks again

kairos I think I know y u didn’t choose the porpoise class submarine, it not just because that the Salmons and Sargos are u favorites but because of other reasons that have a relation to technology, it is because they are 3 Knots slower, they have 2 less torpedo tubes at the back, they are slightly smaller, and they learned lessons from the Porpoise when constructing the Salmons
Yeah, they look similar form the outside, but these old American subs got a lot of upgrades throughout the war.

Just installed this mod myself and I am enjoying it so far, I just hate that the game crashes my whole PC every so often. Though it seems to be a known issue with trying to play this game on Win10
Yeah, it's a pretty interesting mod. As for your crash issues, I might be able to help with that. First, try running the game in compatibility mode. If that doesn't work look up the SH4 Large Address Aware patch, it fixed my issues with running on Win 10.
KairoS I did both of these and now the game runs perfectly fine. I also have been saving the game frequently which might be helping as well. Thanks for the help man, really appreciate it.

Good question, and the honest answer is I don't know for sure. Though I can tell you Norton Eraser keeps trying to delete JSGME, which you need to run the mod. If you're concerned about security, it might be worth doing some more research first. Sorry I don't have more info.
What do you think is better, TMO or FOTRSU?
Well there are things I really like about FOTRSU, especially all the extra ships the mod gives you to shoot at, but I still prefer TMO to be honest. They're both excellent mods though.

I'd say Sh4 is by far the easier game to begin with, but it's also a lot more buggy.

No I haven't, Alex. I've only tried TMO and RFB. Is it another Sh4 mod?

It should, I'm using Win 10. I would recommend running it in comparability mode though, and save often in case the game crashes.
