- "It is possible to see a summer election if Rishi Sunak simply thinks, well, if I'm going to head off a challenge, I might as well go now."
New polling gives more bad news for Rishi Sunak who could choose an 'early exit' election in summer if local election losses are too big. Times Radio's Political panel discuss.

This current angst-ridden narrative reminds me of just HOW MUCH Britain NEEDS a PROPORTIONALLY elected Government...& even a RE-BUILD of the House of Commons, a CIRCULAR Chamber, with a PROPER DEBATING regime...not the endless childish bickering that HIDES the TRUE state of any debate...WE NEED CHANGE!...WE NEED SHARING the COMMON WEALTH!
Be careful with what you wish for. Proportional representation means large parties are kept in power, and dictated to, by small, often extremist minority parties. Look at Israel right now. It also means that manifestos go out of the window and are replaced by coalition agreements dictated to be minorities.
It also means that constituencies have multiple MPs of different parties who will only take cases of those who voted for them, and exclude themselves from different points of view.
Better to look at alternative vote and make sure every elected MP gets more than 50 percent of the vote, and we retain one MP per constituency who works for everyone, and is exposed to different points of view to challenge their position on policy.
Good post! I definitely think that the UK Parliament should move out of the ancient, crumbling, subsiding money pit of the Palace of Westminster. The Palace of Westminster is a toxic relic of the British Empire, and it should be either turned into a museum or even partially demolished.
We need a brand new Parliament building, designed like the Scottish Parliament one.
Remove the monarchy from the constitution, abolish the House of Lords, ban second jobs for MPs, absolute transparency and regulation of lobbying activities, nationalise life-essential utilities like water and power, corruption in office should carry an automatic ban from public service and roles within Government as well as a custodial sentence, claims in Parliament should be automatically subjected to scrutiny by an independent non-partisan body, fast track the COVID inquiry and start an InfoSys contract inquiry (before Rishi legs it for California and refuses to return to the UK).
Proportional representation would be nice, but there are some fundamental flaws in our very apparatus of government and how it has been set up, and changing the way we count votes wouldn't address those.
@@michaelsandy3353 What do you mean constituencies will have multiple MPs? That not how PR works at all.

Sunak has little chance to be reelected.it would be best for the country.
Murdoch press are going to have a melt down when tons of investment comes into the U.K. once the Tories have gone.
Business are just waiting for them to be gone.
Sunak was put in position by his MPs and he is responsible to them only. So if it is clear that most of them will lose their seats anyway whatever he does, then it makes sense for him to delay the election as long as possible to keep the MPs in their jobs. If enough of them disagrees then they could remove him then he's not responsible for their welfare any more.
This (presumably accurately) presupposes an entirely selfish rationale for assuming the role of PM, rather than the more traditional approach (however equivocal) of purporting to put The Country first. In delaying 'til Autumn '24, Sunak is merely delaying the inevitable wipeout for the Conservative Party, as his MPs drift off one by one.
Unseen Rishi. I’m lost and fed up of the Tories. Just get out. Sooner out sooner they can hope/work to get back in.

"Among the many challenges faced by society, none may be as detrimental as the governance of the unvirtuous. Just as a rudderless ship is at the mercy of the waves, a nation led by poor politicians drifts aimlessly towards ruin. Let us, therefore, not only seek to elect leaders of competence, but more importantly, leaders of moral integrity, for it is virtue that steers the course of history towards prosperity and justice." - Marcus Aurelius
Sunak has all the money in the world; his choice is vast so he can please himself and I don't give a rat's a** what he does or where he goes, providing he gets out of my sight and hearing pronto.
In the election, Sunak will definitely win his own seat of Richmond in Yorkshire (among the top 10 safest Tory seats). It will be interesting to see if he stays on as a backbench MP after he resigns from the leadership of the Conservative Party, or if he just walks away from politics altogether.
@@timonsolus Thanks, but I'll take a rain-check. 😊
He COULD even lose his own seat!!!
That’s extremely unlikely. Sunak is in an extremely safe Conservative seat (Richmond), which has been held continuously by the Tories for over 100 years. Even in 1997, the Tories won with a 10,000+ vote majority. (It’s a rural constituency with a high percentage of affluent voters.)
@timonsolus I said, "COULD." Yes, he probably will cling on and win it, BUT if you look at the polling data, it is NOT entirely out of the question that he COULD lose it.
The Sunak the better.
A luxury US condo in a gated community with round the clock security awaits you Rishi. He’ll flee as quick as he can and disappear into his billionaire bunker. No way he’ll stay in the UK, he’s totally finished here as a politician.

Sunak problem is making promises that have never materialised. That is what people remember.
I wounder has rishi updated his green card yet ?
At the last local election (in Suffolk), I wasn't going to vote Conservative so I voted Green because there wasn't a Reform candidate. I would never vote Green in a general election due to their stance on immigration.
It's always a treat to watch Tory Client Journalists who backed Johnson, backed Truss and the mini budget and then backed Suank with endless talk of "polls narrowing *inevitably*" talk about Labour's chances and the public's attitude to Keir Starmer when they clearly never speak to anyone outside of the Westminster bubble. When I go out in my community, a Tory constituency, there is a huge appetite for a different type of politics and to give Labour a chance to show what it can do.
God help us. Labour will be just as bad (and probably worse) as the tories. Time to stop electing the UniParty.

Doesn't matter how old or what gender you are, as long as they call themselves politicians, their response to questions and criticism will always be, "no, it's not at all like that." Party above all.
He wanted this job he manipulated tp get the top job. He has done nothing to make things better. Rishi is probably a nice man but he is a terrible PM. Labour wont win this election the conservatives have lost this election. The tradgy is if they lose lots of seats and labour has a huge majority that wont be demoracy. If all that voted brexit cane pit and voted Reform just maybe we would have a chance of change
I agree with Jordan Peterson labour will turn this country into Venezuela. All the issues today ECHR DEI HR lawyers are all the result of blair government. Labour will bring in a law that makes it impossible to criticise islam. I cant vote Tory after a lifetime of voting but labour isnt electable.
Jordan Peterson knows nothing of what Labour will do. Reform are just recycled tories so they won't win one seat. Labour will win by default but that's what happens. Govts lose elections, opposition parties don't win them, very rarely It's always the fact that the public get fed up or in this case they can see that this is the worst govt ever to hold office in the UK and that is why it will be a drubbing for the tories.
If Labour aren't electable why are they at 45%in polls and have won 13 out of last 15 by elections
maureen, you're deluded. if you listen to jordan peterson for political advice you probably won't be using an ounce of impartiality or actual fact for anything when it comes to political devate

Awesome. Excellent channel. Spot on. Well said. June general election in England London Britain. Think October UK general election in England London Britain. Wasted 14 years Conservative government in England. Time for Change in England London Britain Art Bezrukavenko deliver it. Greens get 2 British MP's.
The local elections will be extremely bad for the Tories, but they're to look even worse than they actually are. Most of the councils up for election last voted in May, 2021. That was when the Tories were peaking in the polls, with a general perception that the vaccine rollout had gone well and Brexit being "done", legally, but before any costs would become apparent as the transition phase was still going on. They ended up with 2345 councillors to Labour's 1345.

Weird alien concepts like taxing wealth. Improving the NHS and the infrastructure. Switching to a Green climate.
The Greens are more left wing than Labour. If that helps.
However, as with Reform, the Greens can afford to offer unrealistic policies in their manifesto, because they know that they will never be called upon to deliver those policies in government (because they have no chance of winning 300+ seats). Why delete my comment, Times Radio? Because I mentioned the need for an inquiry into InfoSys contracts?

No need to mention grandchildren to sound sympathetic. Truth is Labour will not "win" this election. The tories will lose it. By default the majority of Labour voters will not be Labour in their heart. So how will Labour accommodate them?
Labour have never gone below 29% vote share in the last 14 years even at the absolute worst, indeed in 2019 they polled 32%, so that would suggest that at 45% of the vote in the polls the majority of Labour supporters are “Labour in heart and mind”. Everybody can see the incoming Labour Government is about to inherit the biggest mess the country has been in since 1945, perhaps historically the biggest mess the country has EVER been in, there isn’t a single aspect of our economy, Government and public services that hasn’t been totally wrecked since 2010. That said your probably right, this election will be about the Tories and I wholeheartedly believe this is the end of road for the Tories as a major party of Government just as the 1922 election marked the same fate for the Liberals. Polls put Tory support among the under 50s at barely 10%, Labour support among this age group is at 60%. They have no electoral future among millennials and Gen Z.
