Sorry to see the delay in video. I have been following you for a year plus! Would have loved to meet you- live on pool 7 of the Erie Canal! Interesting fact but the white bock building you showed at the Mohawk harbor is a nuclear reactor! That is right before the last bridge before scotia!
I love the Erie Canal! I think I have watched every video on UA-cam of people traveling the canal. I boat on Lake Erie and I am planning to do the canal next summer after I retire. Looking so forward to it.
Those locks were INSANE!!! The doors were massive and it looked like y’all were entering the gates into some sort of kingdom each time! Holy cow, the bloops had me laughing!
HOLY COW, OMG 😅 Locking is super fun and different! We still have many locks to go in Tennessee and Alabama, y'all are always welcome to come for a ride! 😁
I really enjoyed this one. Showing the boat ahead of you while transiting the locks helped capture the scope of everything. This is the best I've seen since researching and starting my solo transit of the New York Canal System. I copy/pasted the following to clarify the length of the Erie Canal including other sections of the NY canal system. "The Erie Canal is 339 miles long from Waterford (Albany) to Tonawanda (Buffalo). Including its laterals, the Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca Canals, the entire system mileage equals 524."
We did the Erie going East so the flight of Five was down, which is usually calmer than go8ing up. We did the entire Erie in a single-diesel 35-footer with bow thruster, and there were some stressful times in locks when the wind and current pulled us into or off locks walls. We used big, round fenders for the locks and they were a Godsend.
I’ve been through the locks around Pittsford, NY several times on tour boats. Come September I’m leading a paddle through lock 33. Expect that to be awesome from kayak level!
How exciting!!! It was fun watching you go through the lochs. One of my ancestors used to be a boatman on the Erie Canal in the 1800's. I'm sure they were using mules back then. Looking forward to these videos as you approach Michigan and get into familiar territory for us. 😀
Great video. You gave the viewer atouch of the size and scope of the lock system and small your boat seems. The scenery was real well presented and the problem jet ski's can be. The canal system gives us all a glimpse of how things were brought cross country, Enjoy
new subscriber here! I'm enjoying your trip and reliving our own-did that same trek last July/August 2021...picked up the new-to-us trawler in long island and sailed it home to Ohio through the locks. I still remember the feeling when looking at that first lock!
This was AWESOME…those locks were massive! Really enjoyed this and those bloopers had me and my hubby laughing! Those tacos looked so delicious…definitely my kind of food! Ollie was cuuuute as ever! Keep traveling safe!
Wish I knew you were passing through. My home port is Albany Marine on your port side right above the Waterford flight. hope you had a chance to stop at Amsterdam town docks or guy park wall to stay at next. Another couple days to Sylvan Beach which is a nice stop too. We have cruised The Hudson, Champlain, and Erie canals for years. If we knew you were going by we could’ve bought you dinner. Enjoy The Erie
Well...wait until y'all get to the Jamie Whitten Lock on the Tenn-Tom - it's only about 85 feet deep, 600 feet long and 110 feet wide. I was going north and when the lock doors opened to let southbound traffic out my first thought was 'damn...I've never seen anything like this.' I'd done locks before but not one as big as that lock - that was a 'holy cow' experience with the only saving grace being the floating bollards. The Erie Canal is an amazing experience in it's own right. Enjoying the videos - thanks for sharing! Safe travels. Cheers...
Thanks Ross! That is a HUGE lock, it will definitely feel like we are entering a cave when we head through. Floating bollards do make things much easier! Thanks for watching 😁
I really like the idea of using dish washing gloves. Thanks to Andy and Gwen telling you about them. The best point is that they can easily be washed when you're doing dishes. (After you've completed dishes). They would be great in the cold or rain by putting on regular gloves then putting the Playtex on. I'll have to add this to my boat supply list. PS: I hope you'll continue to vlog and stay in boating after you complete this trip. So many other cruisers drop off line. I know it might be one of many goals in life. Well, you both have a safe and enjoyable trip. Later. Semper Fi!
Thanks for the cost. It helps me make my dreams more right sized for retirement. Great info. When you all get on lake Michigan let me know. My cousins live on the water. Go by bug them.
The higher elevation is probably why you’re feeling tired &/or sleepy. I couldn’t stay awake during any trips to the Mountains, especially if the elevation was sudden. (I missed Big Sur!)
Very cool how the locks are and how to go through them like that! I was trying to figure out your route but your last Nebo location vs these videos are way behind where you likely are. I am seeing on the news how bad the Mississippi is now with very low water levels, so curios your route down the waterways and where you will end up when finished? Really wish I can find your location on Nebo again....I love studying the route how this all works. Wondering if some day I might take a trip like this myself......
We'd highly recommend taking the trip if you are ever able, the entire trip is one big learning experience and their are just so many great memories so far. The Mississippi being low didn't affect Loopers too much, we are normally only on the M. for a few days and typically just one of those is anchoring. The channel is plenty deep, 20-30 feet or more! Cheers!
I just caught your channel I trivial the flight a lot . My boat club is west of loc 6. You went by it in the video. The boat club is the Crescent Boat Club. Why did you not use the cables in the locks? They are the easiest to use, Take your Bow line and Stern line bring them to your center cleat sending your lines around the cable then tie off. Then it takes only one person to keep fast to the lock wall.
Seeing as the videos are a bit behind the actual dates, how far into the Great Lakes have you made it? I heard mention in an earlier video that you are trying for Chicago by end of season. Wonder how well that went as I am on Lake Michigan, and I know that we just had 15 plus footers last week.
Hi Eric! We made it through Chicago by mid-September. Feel free to check out our Sunday-Summary (schoandjo.com/sunday-summary) to find out more real time info alongside our thoughts for the past week!
Cool, I have spent time along the Canal. It's very historic. You neglected to show one neat thing - the actual "intersection" of the Erie and Champlain canals. It's two water channels intersecting at 90 degrees above the first lock.
Hopefully you took in the Rideau Canal built in 1832 in Canada and or the Trent Severn Waterway where you get to experience the Peterborough Lift Lock, literally a tub that rises and the Port Severn marine railway where your boat is mounted on a rail cae in the water and lifted up a mountain and back down into Georgian Bay that connects to the North Passage to Mackinac Island at the North end of Lake Michigan and then on the Mississipi.
Did you play the Erie Canal song? Got a Mule her name is Sal, 15 miles on the Erie Canal. Had to do internet search but remember singing or hearing it in grade school. Also known as Low Bridge.
@@SchoandJo Yep. Love his music. Bought The River album in Dover, DE in '75? Liked cover. One of his bests. No clue as to any songs or who he was. Dover not famous for radio diversity back then. 1 station. Top 40 only. Could get Philedelphia on am if atmospheric conditions right. :)
And yes to each their own. Pretty sure we'd disagree politically but that doesn't mean I won't watch your trip. Think it's amazing. You 2 were born at the right time with internet, the affordable cameras and the ability to work remotely. Guess I could have taken pictures and written a book that wouldn't sell. :). Love you guys. Keep it going. Figure almost done or done. Mississippi River low so be careful. Can't wait until next video

A 30 foot lock, that's not very big compared to the locks on the Snake and Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest. Where did you kids get the financial backing for your journey?
A little late for you, but fender boards are a real help when you're against a concrete wall. They slide up and down better than bare or covered fenders and protect your fenders. Lumber is cheap. Fenders, expensive!
We considered getting some, we thought we'd test out locking through without and see how it went and then creating some if we thought they would be needed. So far so good without them though! I can see how they would help though, cheers!
I was wondering because I'm going to try to do the loop next year. I waited to late to get a start this year. I follow several looper videos and I'm learning from each and every one of you. Thank you your great videos

Hi Steve! I think we showed that in the previous video!
Erie canal is 363 miles long waterford to Buffalo. Not 524 miles long. We did the canal in little miss sunshine in 2019 .
Definitely! Some of the Canadian locks this year were our favorite! Stay tuned to see when we pass through 😁
Wait till you reach the Trent severn waterway!
Most definitely! The Erie has blown our expectations out of the water though 😁
How many times have they changed the water in 200 years? I wouldn’t have had gloves for the lines.
Not sure, but they empty and clean the locks every year!

Actually that part of the canal is the Mohawk River.
These locks aren't flight locks. Flight locks are connected to each other, like the twin flight locks on the welland canal.
