All the best for Hungarian Teams (Football, basketball, water polo etc), from Greece!
Hungary won the 1955 EuroBasket (Because many people are forgetting this), against Soviet Union and Romania! I believe that they could easily win the 1954 World Cup too!

Are there any Greek sport stories you want me to cover? Unfortunately I can't speak about the Euro 2004 because of copyright issues...

Well, I can say many Greek sport stories...
Especially in football, basketball and water polo, my three favourite sports!
You probably know that Greek basketball team is one of the best in the world! Greek water polo teams (Boys, girls, men, women) too! I can not say that Greek football team is so much good as until 2014!
For basketball, I can say that Greece started to be a superpower, since 1987, when Greek Team won the EuroBasket, against Soviet Union and Yugoslavia! Before the 1987 tournament, Greece won a bronze medal on EuroBasket 1949 and the gold medal of the Mediterranean Games 1979! Greek Basketball Team, had the first appearance for a World Cup on 1986, when Greece beat Argentina, but lost against China! After that, on 1987, Greece won the gold medal in EuroBasket against Soviet Union and on 1989, Greece won the silver medal in EuroBasket 1989, because of the lose against Yugoslavia!
Between 1993-1998, Greece used to be fourth in the tournaments (World Cup and EuroBasket)! There was a bad period of the Greek Team, between 1998, especially the EuroBasket 1999 was the worst EuroBasket for Greece after 1987, in which Greece finished last, lower than Hungary, Bosnia etc, after the fourth place in the World Cup in Athens, and 2004 Olympic Games, in which Greece finished 5th, after the win against Puerto Rico!
Greece won the EuroBasket 2005 for second time, against Germany in the final! And meanwhile Greece qualified for the World Cup 2006, in which Greece could easily be the World Champion! Greece beat the Dream Team USA in semifinals, but lost against Spain in the final! In EuroBasket 2007 finished as 4thand in EuroBasket 2009 won the bronze medal and it was the first bronze medal after 1949!
But in World Cups 2010, 2014 and 2019, Greece qualified for the last 16, but was always unlucky, especially on the World Cup 2014, because we lost against Serbia, so unfair!
Meanwhile in the EuroBasket 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017, Greece couldn't qualify for the semifinals! I think that Greece had a great team on 2015, but was as much unlucky, as on the World Cup 2014, in which Greece beat ALL the teams in the group (I remember Senegal, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Croatia, Argentina), but lost against Serbia who had 2 wins and 3 loses in their group!
But I believe that Greek basketball team can qualify for the semifinals of a EuroBasket or a world cup!

@@Ad-excelsum As for the football team, Greece qualified for first time for a Euro, on 1980, against Soviet Union and Hungary! Unfortunately Greece couldn't win even one match against Germany, Netherlands or Czechoslovakia!
After that, Greece qualified for the World Cup 1994, against Russia and Hungary, but lost against Bulgaria, Nigeria and Maradona's Argentina!
After that, Greece had changed many coaches, like Iordanescu and we finally took Otto Rehhagel! Rehhagel started coaching the team and took a draw 2-2 against England with Beckham, on 2001!
After the match against England, Greeks started to hope for something great! But the loses against Finland (5-1) and Albania, Greece couldn't qualify for the World Cup 2002!
But Greece started to play for the Euro 2004! The first two matches against Spain and Ukraine were very bad, but after that, Greece started to win ALL the matches! Finally, on June 2003, Greece beat both Spain and Ukraine (This win against Ukraine was a very sad day for me, because my grandpa passed away from a heart attack, I was only 5 then)! Anyway, finally Greece qualified for the Euro, above Spain, after beating Armenia and Northern Ireland! Greece has this great appearance in this Euro! Greece beat Portugal in the premiere, had a draw against Spain and even if we lost against Russia, we qualified above Spain! After that, Greece won France, Czech Republic and in final beat Portugal for second time!
But Greece couldn't qualify for the World Cup 2006, because of the lose against Albania!
Greece qualified for the Euro 2008, above Turkey, Hungary, Bosnia, Norway, Moldova and Malta, but lost against Russia, Sweden and Spain in the group stage!

@@Ad-excelsum Finally Greece, qualified for the World Cup 2010, for second time after 1994, after the win against Ukraine in play offs, on November 2009! Greece lost against South Korea, beat Nigeria (The first goal and the first win of Greece in the World Cup)! But Greece couldn't beat Argentina, which Argentina had Messi as striker and Maradona as coach! That was the last game of Otto Rehhagel in Greece!
But Greece qualified for the Euro 2012, in Poland and Ukraine, above Croatia! Greece had a draw against Poland in the premiere 1-1, lost against Czech Republic and beat Russia 1-0! So Greece could qualify for the quarter finals and play against Germany! But Greece couldn't beat Germany!
After the Euro 2012, Greece qualified for the World Cup 2014 as second in the group (First was Bosnia), Greece lost against Bosnia in Zenica 3-1, had a draw 0-0 in Athens, but beat ALL of the Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia and Liechtenstein! After that, Greece beat Romania 3-1 on November 2013 and 1-1 in Bucharest, so Greece qualified above Romania! Greece lost against Colombia 3-0, had the first draw in a world cup match against Japan and finally beat Ivory Coast 2-1, with the penalty of Samaras! Greece qualified to the last 16 for first time, but lost against Costa Rica in penalties! I think that Greece could qualify for the semifinals, I can say the final for the World Cup 2014!

      @@Ad-excelsum
After the World Cup 2014, started a bad period for the Greek team! Greece had to qualify for the Euro 2016, against Hungary, Romania, Finland, Northern Ireland and Faroe Islands! Before the first match, Greeks said that we would qualify as first, with 10 wins in 10 matches and for the second place would be among Romania and Hungary! But Greece couldn't beat even the Faroe Islands and eliminated as last in this group! And we couldn't beat Romania, our last opponent for the World Cup 2014! We only beat Hungary 4-3, in the last match!
After that traumatic group with Romania, Hungary and Faroe Islands, we had to play against Belgium, Bosnia, Estonia, Cyprus and Gibraltar for the World Cup 2018! We had better matches than Euro 2016, we finished as second above Bosnia, but we lost 4-1 against Croatia, so we couldn't qualify for the World Cup in Russia!
On Nations League 2018, Greece had three wins and three loses against Finland, Hungary and Estonia (one win and one lose against each team)!
For the Euro 2020, Greece had to play against Italy, Bosnia (again), Finland (again), Armenia and Liechtenstein! Greece started very good, but couldn't have the same good way, against Armenia and Liechtenstein! But after that, Greece played very well against Italy (Even if we lost against Italy), and then we beat Bosnia, Armenia and Finland! But we couldn't qualify for the Euro!
After that, Greece had to play for the Nations League 2020, but couldn't have the first place, between Slovenia, Kosovo and Moldova!
And finally, we couldn't qualify for the World Cup 2022, against Spain, Sweden, Georgia and Kosovo, but we proved that we have good and talented players!

    Awesome video!
In the first stage, Hungary and West Germany were drawn into the same group (2).
Hungary opened the World Cup with a 9-0 win over South Korea. It then played Germany, winning 8-3, and therefore qualified for the quarter-finals.
They lost the final because in the game, Puskás suffered an ankle hairline fracture from a foul by German central defender Werner Liebrich that made Puskás miss the quarter- and semi-finals.
In the quarter-finals, Hungary beat co-favorites Brazil - runners-up of the 1950 World Cup - with 4-2, despite Puskás' absence.
Pele and Brazil won the World Cup in 1958 due to the 1956 Soviet invasion.

Quite possibily the 1958 World Cup. Don't forget England lost three (Edwards, Taylor, and Byrne) possibly a forth starter (Pegg) in the Munich Air Disaster. They were Brazil's QF opponent.

Thanks for a great video. I have an interest in this because both because I'm from Melbourne and my wife is Hungarian. When I was a kid we had a book about the 1956 Olympics, which included the "blood bath". Ironically, the 56 Olympics were called the "Friendly Games". That might be because Aussies are a friendly people. Also, the tradition in the closing ceremony of all the athletes mingling together came from those games, apparently thought up by a WW1 Victoria Cross winner.
I also have a suggestion re mispronouncing foreign names, rather than apologising in advance, why don't you spend some time getting it right? Then your videos would be even better! Admittedly Hungarian pronounciation is hard but a quick internet search would set you right on the basics such as Budapest ("Buhdda-pesht") and Magyar ("Mod-yar")! Hope you don't think I'm nagging, I'm just trying to be helpful.

    • @Ad-excelsum
      @Ad-excelsum  3 роки тому +1

Thank you very much for your comment. I didn't know about the closing ceremony trivia, this is amazing. One other reason it might have been called the friendly games is because Germany sent a unified team for the first time since world war 2.
Regarding your comment about pronunciation : I am always welcoming criticism since it helps me getting better content out. I am googling the names of the athletes to try and pronounce them right to the extend of my ability. The issue I have is with city names and adjectives. As Magyar and Budapest do exist in English, I decided to go with the English pronunciation. I am French but still would pronounce Paris with the S at the end if I were to make a video about it here. I don't know if this makes sense and is definitely a debatable choice, but thanks for your feedback once again :D
I hope you'll enjoy some of the other videos on the channel!

@@Ad-excelsum Thanks. The guy who invented the "mingling" was Wilfred Kent -Hughes. His lifestory is available on Wikipidia, though it turns out he was not a VC winner (I was mixing him up with someone else). Also, the thing about the Germans is interesting especially because when I was kid in the 70s, the East and the West Germans were fierce rivals.
Re the "pronunciation issue", you originally apologised for mispronouncing Hungarian words and now you're saying the two I mentioned are "English" anyway! 😎 Pronouncing some Hungarian words one way and others in another doesn't make sense because Hungarian pronunciation is extremely regular. I'm also not convinced "Magyar" exists in English. You make a good point about "Paris" though but it's a bit of a slippery slope, does that mean for example, the city of Nice no longer should be pronounced "Nice" (with a French accent) but now "Nice" with an English accent, or even "Noice" with an Australian one?
Anyway you're the one making the videos, not me, so do them however you feel is best.👍 Can't be easy making them in a foreign language, so, good on you mate. I will look at your other ones. The other thing is that "out of bounds" is an AFL footy term for when the ball is kicked over the line.

    • @Ad-excelsum
      @Ad-excelsum  3 роки тому +1

Thanks again for your comments Maddy. It is a slippery slope indeed, and I actually didn't know Magyar wasn't an English word. We use it quite a lot in French so I assumed it was ok in English as well as gramarly didn't pick on it. I'll be more careful next time :D
I had no idea out of bounds was an AFL word, I caught some ozzie football games on television and it was amazing. I definitely have to look into it more, I'm sure it would be a great subject for a future video. I also will do more about rugby. I haven't done one in a long time so it would be a blast.
Anyway, have a nice weekend mate, you guys are killing it at the Olympics this year. Two more gold than 2016 with one week to go is insane.

@@Ad-excelsum Thanks again. Re the mingling thing, I did some more "research" (reading Wikipedia) and found out that a 17 year old from Melbourne just thought it up and wrote an anonymous letter to the Olympic Committee
