This is a tremendous help! I sang professionally for several years in my youth. I sang more or less "intuitively" without any clear notion of my voice/body as an instrument to which technique could be applied. Until watching this video and doing the exercises I never realized, for instance, how much vocal tract constriction I was carrying back then. Now here I am, decades later, working my voice back into shape - no damage done to it in the intervening years - and improving! I have learned so much from this and all your other videos, Dr. Dan. I like your style as much as I like the information you present. I'm 75 years old (male) and I'm singing - if you can believe it - better than ever! Thank you!
I definitely need to do this exercise, there are high notes both in my belting range and in Falsetto that I Can do, but my throat feels so constricted that I avoid them. Thanks for another great tip Dr Dan. The scientific approach you take is the most effective.
You, sir are who I have been looking for, since, well a long time. Voice constriction absolutely halts a singer from reaching their notes correctly. With freedom of movement and ease. Thank you is not enough.
dr dan 😭 I have NEVER felt such freedom with my voice than I have just now trying the drinking position exercise! I’m nearly in tears. i’m so excited to work with this exercise! thank you!!!
This guy is great! I’m sorry to share this but nobody knows this about me. Despite being told I had a beautiful voice, I found it extremely difficult to sing. So many people encourage me to do it. After having training, It didn’t make much difference. My notes were stronger, I sounded good but I was just as tired. For me, 30 minutes singing was more exhausting than walking for 24 hours. I tried again a few years later. I also gave up smoking and it was a little easier but not enough. It just drained me :( I miss it and feel jealous of anyone that can sing without feeling exhausted! It’s probably the only thing I’m jealous about. So, If you are just starting out. I hope you can enjoy your gift!
There's high notes that I do easily when doing exercises. But then, when singing a song, I can stop thinking I have to do an extra effort and that feeling its hard to change. I think that in a deep level I'm in love with that idea and for that reason singing a song is hit or miss for me. It depends on the day and the weather..
Thanks for the discussion of constriction! I noticed that some of the people I try to sing with become difficult to sing with at times. I feel that the 'tuning space' has disappeared and notes that are well within upper my range become difficult to sing unless I drop and octive or simply to stop trying to singin full voice and go breathy or wait for the beginning of a phrase when the others mysteriously 'reset' the 'tuning space'...I think that somehow the 'disapearing tuning space' and pharyngeal constriction may be related somehow, because when I stop and tilt my head up and sing without really listening to the others I can almost find my voice again. I've almost decided to stop singing old favorites (like christmas carols) with my friends because invariably become difficult to sing to accompany and I end up trying to over sing them hoping that they might listen to ... little old me. :)
I'm so infinitely grateful to you, you saved me: I've been singing my whole life and I have many skills but with my timbre I haven't encountered the positive feedback I need many, many times as a professional singer. this exercise where you look up has completely changed my tone in my timbre. My voice sounds really nice now. thank you so much
Thank you so much!! I’ve been trying to figure out for a long time what’s going on with my throat when I sing. But it’s not just high notes for me. It’s any singing. I’m hoping these exercises can help cuz it’s fatiguing and my voice gets shaky and I can’t hold a strong note because of it. I just subscribed! 😊
One of the best explanation I've found ! My singing teacher just said me draw back your head for the high pitches....Ok, as you said it may take time to learn the good position of the constrictors but that's the way. Straw exercices can do that well ? I've problem to sing in studio while at home it's good, in studio while high volume instruments, I intend to sing louder and i cannot reach my top notes, what's helped me, is to sing in fry scream position that I think put back those constrictors or/and open or enforced my back throat, so around pharynx zone to stay wider :)
thank you thank you! Grazie! Obrigado!!!! Great. it really is a good way for understanding where we put all our tensions! I'm getting down to working on it ! Will let you know! Cheers
I struggle with a lot of tension when singing, sometimes even when I'm not trying to go high or low, just in my normal register. Starting these exercises now, here's hoping I can keep them up for several weeks!
Hey Dr Dan, thanks for this informative vid and great advice! I can understand looking up at the ceiling stretches the constrictor muscles, and you can gradually learn to relax them in the normal head position..but what is the mechanism behind the covered mouth technique? what should we be feeling and what range should one do this eg. over an octave? esp as higher notes will cause constrictors to kick in. Hope that question made sense! cheers, Linda.
Hey Dr. Dan! I've been subscribed to this channel for awhile now and found that your exercises and explanation really help in addition to my voice lessons with a voice teacher! I've seen a lot of improvement in producing a natural sound. Sometimes, I practice on a "mmmmmm" on do-re-mi-fa-so-fa-mi-re-do. When I'm in the middle or lower registers, my lips tickle and vibrate a lot. But, as I get higher, the tickling disappears. I feel like I'm losing the aim of the sound as I get higher. Furthermore, as I do octave exercises for vocal warmups, I think I feel my larynx pop up sometimes. I don't know how to keep it from doing that! Thanks again!
I got into C5 in mixed voice when singing in a tilted position. I just have to focus on relaxing and singing gently but clearly without being breathy. Great videos.
I could sing with head tilted, no problem, but after that my neck hurts (around the larynx) and even the next day I feel this choking sensation without even speaking or singing. Why?
Why do I have swallowing (dysphagia) problems when drinking liquids after singing with a lot of twang? I can't drink anything without choking on it. It's awful.
Dr Dan's Voice Essentials.. thank you! I'm looking forward to it. Already mentioned to you previously but you probably don't remember cause I'm sure you're inundated with messages. I purchased a program with another instructor on udemy but like you said on a pervious video sometimes it takes several different explanations from different sources to understand a particular concept. I really like your style though. That's why I purchased your CD. Please continue doing what you do.
The choke game is so real. I find that mine comes from starting that high note but thinking it sounds strange and clamming up. Especially while recording - and I absolutely hate hearing my recorded voice. Is that how people really sound or is what I hear the real me? (I've never been trained, I've just been singing since I could talk and I like to think I'm pretty decent, but listening to recordings takes me down a peg real quick 😅)
I'm nowhere near professional in singing, but the fact that you're untrained and you haven't mixed and mastered your vocal tracks could be the reasons. If you're really determined you could learn everything about singing from the beginning haha. Of course don't just straight away compare your voice with famous singers, everyone's voice is unique and hey, you still have a long way to go! Btw I have been singing with severe vocal tension, so correcting this bad habit is quite difficult for me (sometimes I just want to give up!). But I'm still trying. For me, I sound the best in the shower while the worst in my recordings too.
@@chengliklik thanks for your words of wisdom 😊 I do need to go back to basics before I get back on stage. I used to be able to *mimic* Dolores O'Riordan, but mimicking isn't enough 😂 Also, yes. Shower and car singing is always the best 😂😂😂
The closed mouth exercises work for me, but the tilted head brings about a lot of tension for me. Any suggestions to help not constrict when i go higher ?
Hi Dan, wow, I've never seen this exercise before. This really helped get rid of the pinching vibration that I constantly speak with at the back of my throat. I've commented before about my Muscle Tension Dysphonia and thanks to your videos I have gotten rid of it 90% but I sometimes, on rare occasions, get some jaw tension but it's not as serious as this constriction in my pharynx. My speech therapist says that I talk and sing from the throat and yes, it hurts and I can tell that I'm doing it wrong because I feel vibration in the back of my neck. I'm just a little confused about the tongue position influencing the constriction in the pharynx because my tongue position is relaxed behind the bottom teeth and I am getting that nice breath. Is there anything else that might impact this? Thanks for your help with always posting these videos.
Hi again Dan, so sorry for commenting so much but I experimented with the AH vowel just then and used my index finger to push the back of the tongue down and forward (like when the doctors check down your mouth with a paddle pop stick) and BIG DIFFERENCE, there's was absolutely zero constriction. Are our tongues supposed to be down and forward like this when singing and talking? Not sure if this can work for contemporary and everyday speech
I'm going to try these techniques! I also bought your vocal exercise album and was wondering if I'm going to sing, do I have to do all the exercises before performing? Thank you!
Dan, my throat has been hurting for years now whenever I sing but I thought it was normal so I didn’t do anything about it, but then I found out yesterday that it wasn’t in my case when it got unbearable and it’s not healing .what should I do?
Hi I have a question. I have been on vocal rest for the weekend after practicing on weekdays, and when I came back to practice today, and I noticed I had a really hard time with this exercise and just reaching my higher range in general.Keep in mind, I had been using these exercises almost every day for last week and it worked extremely well. I started this practice routine last week with me practicing during the week and resting during the weekend. Idk if the reason this is so difficult now is because since I didn't practice for two days, my vocal folds needs to get back into it. It starts to crack when I hit the 5 note scale of G#4 (keep in mind Im going from c4 to c5), and from then on it becomes a real struggle, where as last week I had significantly less a hard time, or at least it felt that way. DO you think that its just my vocal folds getting back into the swing of things? Thanks
Ducky, it may be that you actually overdid things the week prior and that your voice is still a little fatigued from last week's work out. I would recommend resting the voice for another couple of days and then getting back into things, only practising every second day to start. In the meantime, the following videos may prove helpful - ua-cam.com/video/8I8s14EVFR8/v-deo.html
Thanks so much! This is really helpful! I really appreciate it! Thank you. Also I realized that my practice routine last week wasn't almost every day, I have terrible memory, it was maybe 2-3 days out of 5. Thank you anyways though, I think you are completely correct.
DR Dan, I just relised i do this when I sing, I like clench that part on high notes, especially on the ee vowel, I think it will make a huge different if I can stop
Dr Dan! Should it be able to go from low notes to the highest ones with tilted head? because for me it seems like there's a blockage at the certain note when I try to go higher if I don't want to change anything. Maybe I'm used to use head voice in a wrong way?
Thank you, Dan! Also, do You have a video about how should we use air while singing, how to not overforce our vocal folds/throat and instead how to use breath? I've seen your videos about breathing itself, but for me it seems that whenever I start singing, there's more pressure/tension at the vocal folds area than compared with talking.
It all depends where that note is situated and where it comes from ie what note/s are preceding the high note. Is it a step or a leap..? These two cases require different throat and support coordination. Also, notice if you're pharyngeal muscles are constricting or not.. Try and release jaw, tongue and pharynx tension on the notes before the high note, while increasing the twang without increasing breath pressure.
I honestly don't know what to do I've been singing for a while now and i don't know if my voice has improved or not. I don't even know what my true voice is. I've tried to sing in all different types of ways but it isn't working out. Can you give me so advice?
Hi, Keyana Parkes. You may find my online singing course helpful - drdan.co/onlinesinginglessons. Feel free to check it out sometime. The first module is free to preview!
I notice a lot of tension around my larynx when I start to sing in the tilted back position - so much that it both hurts and prevents me from singing any higher. Should I continue the exercise and attempt to release those muscles? Thanks a lot
It sure is easier said than done, in fact i can barley do it everything is so tight! I can barely make a sound when i tilt my head back and try to sing one note. It feels very uncomfortable. Am i doing something wrong? Do i just need to be patient, i know you said it takes time. Too much volume, air pressure and tension are things i am currently working on.
@@DrDanRobinson how do i find a good vocal coach that would be close to me. What do i look for? I'm old school and do not have the technology to do a skype lesson.
Hey Dan I noticed when I sing below g3 in my chest voice I strain and it feels uncomfortable but when I sing a3-f4 it feels much more better. Why is this ? Isn't because my chest voice isn't developed properly? Because everytime I sing below g3 I strain unless I sing soft, if I sing with volume I strain. For example on the song Chris Brown - With You. I strain on the song apart from the bridge where he sings between d4-f4 it feels a lot more comfortable. Am I doing something wrong or is tho just how my voice is?
My vocal teacher said that I need to darker te vowel wen singing the lower notes instead of singing them very light. But when I darker the sound my throat starts to hurt. Why is this?
My larynx actually raises up when I darker the vowels even if I sing from my diaphragm. But if I sing in a lighter my larynx stays at a nutral position. Does this mean my teacher is givin me wrong information? Should I change teachers?
How many octaves would you say is Bass D to Bb 4? thanks and I am massaging my neck near the larynx and looking up.. I am trying everything to get tension out of me
Okay I am thinking something different I think she was wrong as I know I can sing as low as Bing Crosby and as high as Johnny Mathis.. without supported falsetto.. I am so darn confused the woman didn't play piano so maybe she is saying Bb5 and it is 5 I am not a pianist either and wish to God I was.... If you ever heard Johnny mathis I sound JUST like him I can sing as high if not a little higher and as low as actually Ed Ames.. I know these are American siingers although Johnny Mathis LOVES England and played here many times Wish I could visit there

Is is possible to use your lessons to improve your podcasting voice?
Does underbite create issues for singing in high keys
It will depend on how significant the underbite is...
Dr Dan! Should it be able to go from low notes to the highest ones with tilted head? because for me it seems like there's a blockage at the certain note when I try to go higher if I don't want to change anything. Maybe I'm used to use head voice in a wrong way?

I've seen your videos about breathing itself, but for me it seems that whenever I start singing, there's more pressure/tension at the vocal folds area than compared with talking.
What's the purpose of the first exercise?
The first 'covered mouth' activity helps you to become aware of any pressure throughout your vocal tract.
How is it possible that on some songs I can get the high notes and some notes not
I think it's depending on the key of the songs
Praise Fredrick No because I can get the same key on a different song
EyedWeevil What Dr Dan said, and also how sustained the note has to be, and how much breath you have left when it comes.
EyedWeevil Same man...
What if I don't feel anything in the back of my throat or neck?

You speaking voice is so high is it for stylistic aspect or its natural
Natural.
Oooh good
I notice a lot of tension around my larynx when I start to sing in the tilted back position - so much that it both hurts and prevents me from singing any higher. Should I continue the exercise and attempt to release those muscles? Thanks a lot
Matsab, you need to try to 'release' that tension as you continue to practice the activities. This being said, don't 'over-do-it!'
@@DrDanRobinson thanks. i've just found your videos and am finding them extremely helpful.
I noticed your adams apple doesn't move very much when you do these. Mine moves a lot, is that something I should be working on?

I am trying everything to get tension out of me
Mike, that is just over two and a half octaves.
I know these are American siingers although Johnny Mathis LOVES England and played here many times Wish I could visit there
Is this exercise still effective if I hum while looking up at the ceiling instead of using open vowels?
Yes. You can start with a hum and move onto the vowels.
I can't sing while looking at the ceiling
Its seems impossible🙆
If you ever get to Arizona I'd like to take a class or do you ever do classes on face time?
I do offer online singing lessons. You can learn more here - www.djarts.com.au/product/online-singing-lessons
It's easy to me ...lol
We swallow 600 times a day?! Really now.
Lol
The "soundcheck" scene is used way too excessively, and is quite annoying.
