The Continentals: Richard Frank, Lead Guitar; Robert Sarlo, Rhythm Guitar; Ricky Mangone, Rhythm Guitar; Joseph Messina, Drums and Ralph DiForio, Vocals and Bass Guitar
I have to say it. These guys won a talent contest in their home town, got to appear on national TV. No videotaping, LIVE!! Knocked it out of the ballpark, went home and were hometown/high school heroes, at 15 years old! Graduated school in 1964, went their own ways with great memories on the road of life. That took GUTS to do what they did at 15. I wish them well, even after all these years.
gordon vincent are they dead?
@@baronsorgi1 Last posts on this site indicate that they are still very much alive and well.
They probably all either got drafted or joined the Marines right out of high school and went to Vietnam just like I did. My only wish is that they also made it home.
Did they survive Vietnam ? lol
“Live”, my foot! No vocal microphones, at least two of the guitars not plugged into amps, a horn-section chord at the end from out of nowhere, and the drum-solo sounds don’t match the drummer’s movements. This is phony as hell, and you’d have to brain-damaged to fall for it.
The singer of the Continentals is a real giant. The Continentals had deserved more recognition world wide.
Why “ had deserved”? Past Perfect.
Giant head maybe but a good looking young man none the less. We were all goofy and had weird body parts we were growing into. Nothing wrong with it. I got teased all the time. Guess what? I can laugh at myself and situations life puts you in.
That's the way I danced when waiting for my sister to get out of the bathroom!
🤣
Have more...
🤣 🤣
@@keithclark486 I'm 70, in the 1950's and early 60's, as a family of five, we lived in a one bathroom apartment in Brooklyn.
@@keithclark486 One bathroom and yes five people having only one bathroom is a challenge, LOL.
FOR #2 MAYBE, BUT NOT #1 --- HA HA HA!!!
I've watched this something like 30 times, and I still keep coming back to it.
He is not dancing, he Feel the music
He becomes the music it self.
Incredible. The dancing, the drumming, the Fender guitars, the Pendleton shirts. How have I never seen this before?
Early in their career, the Beach Boys also favored Pendleton shirts.
Great and nostalgic👍
@@retiredyeti5555 yeah, their first name was the Pendletones 'cause of the shirts ahaha
@@retiredyeti5555 I still favor Pendleton shirts! These guys were great.
@@richardwarren7492 - I have a Pendleton shirt from the late 40's, that belonged to my wife's paternal grandfather, then her Dad, and when he died in '93, it was given to me. The elbows are worn out, but it still has years of life left in it!
For those old enough to remember this song, you also remember it was a much better time to be alive in America 🇺🇸
I remember and I strongly disagree, your living in a bubble pal am radio crap cars low wages long hours I'm guessing you miss the all white bread at the table t bone.

I'm 71...I used to move like that...well sort of..If I tried it now...It would be my last dance!
Amen brother.
Same age here..😁
forgive me for laughing, LORD.
We watched the Ted Mack show religiously. I remember seeing Pat Boone on it before he became a huge star in the mid 50's. Saw this group 5 weeks before I left for Navy boot camp.
Damn--Love this sound and personality of these young guys. Moves are just too damn good, too. This is a powerful cool young American rock and roll group...
All these kids would be in their mid 70's now, time flies. They had a great group, love the drummer and the singers dance moves.
AND THE PEOPLE WHO LISTENED TO IT!!! NEXT YEAR FOR ME !!LOL STILL FUN!
Loved how the drummer used the proper stick grip versus the matched timpani style.
This was recorded in '61!!! So SIXTY years before you posted your comment. They'd be in their late seventies or early eighties. (or ya know)
Three guitars and a singer...but the drummers killing it. Great work.
Yes. Don't have bass guitar ?
That was a great year. Tunes like "Stand By Me" and "Cryin'" were hitting the charts. My favorite was "Big Bad John". Soon we would all lose our innocence.
That drum solo was wicked!!!
It was a perfect drum solo.
Especially for those times😅
Enjoyed his little dance number. I'll take this song over today's music anytime.
I remember seeing this on TV back in the day. I was 20yrs old at the time. It still sounds great!!! Thanks!!!
Wow that is so cool. Where I used to live you would have been able to pick up the signal. But I don't believe that the Wharton family, the original owners of the house, had the tv tuned to that channel at the right time that it aired.
I wish that dance style would become popular again....I dig it!!!
You can find it all over UA-cam.
There's quite a few like it all over tik tok
Very Good.
Wow, these performers are so young yet so talented.
Some seriously damn good talent displayed here...
Great "OLD" performance!!!
Very talented bunch . They should have had a record contract. Fantastic!
Who would of thought these boys would be video heroes almost 60 years after they played this song on TV? Five million views and counting!
Well I don't know about video heroes. It is interesting though I guess.
That drum solo man, ahead of its time.
really? let's hope so
that drum solo wasn't ahead of his time at all lol
I though it was almost Wipe Out when he started?
I'm saddened I was born long after this beautiful, fun kind of music was made. But I am joyful I am from the same earth, the same people, the same body, that did it all those years before me. Thank you to the human race.
Now that's looking at the big picture.
Cheer up and learn how to do something that makes you happy, dance sing or play an instrument.
Not bad guys for 1961 !! Now off to Vietnam you go ....and thank you for your service lol.
No Auto-Tune. Yeah! Pure talent.
I first saw this video a couple of months ago and I have watched it a couple of HUNDRED TIMES since!! I was thirteen in 1961, and I wish to God I had seen this then! These young men do a hell of a job, and I can`t understand why their talent was not picked up. The dancer is phenominal, I have never seen moves like that!! It`s a shame we never saw this group much more. They are great, and I hope which ever path they chose, they did well for themselves. God Bless!!
I was also thirteen in 1961. I rarely watched Ted Mack. Now, I feel as if I had missed something.
@@michaelcummingsherrera1232 You are so right! But at that age, we wouldn`t be caught dead watching The Amatuer Hour, although there was some excellent talent displayed.
You have to get lucky. There is a lot of talent out there walking the streets that is never found. There are probably thousands of people who never wanted to play football that would be a franchise QB for NFL teams if they had wanted to play. It is the same with music. I remember being at a church for Christmas Eve with the singing form the choir being some of the best voices I ever heard. Far better than many of the supposed stars.
@@larryambrose2660 Well said.
I was only 7 in '61, but I was up pretty good on music. This was similar to the surf bands at the time, BB, Jan and Dean, etc... Still sounds good.
WOW!!! I was in a band called The Continentals, 55 years ago. We didn't have the great moves like this band, but had great fun. We had the Fender amps and guitars and shirts that matched. What a wonderful time in my life. Thanks for bringing back these memories. There are only three of us left in Nova Scotia!
@Mark Honest Doing great at 75 and still playing the guitar daily Thanks for checking in!
@Mark Honest Nova Scotia
When ever I feel a little down I watch this video. It brings an instant smile to my face.
I hope they are all still alive to enjoy their newfound fame of over six million views since this 2011 posting. They deserve it and should be very proud. The drum solo and dancing were way ahead of their time.
E and his sister passed away in last few years.
I was 6 years old when I watched this live on a Sunday night, thought they were the greatest band.....two weeks later I saw Jackie Wilson live, that's the day surf music didn't matter anymore!!
Cool daddy-oh. That's better than what these young people listen to now.
I’ve seen this video 3 times already, I don’t know why 😕. I can’t stop! Help me!
Hahahahaha, I know what you mean it's addicting! :P
hahahaha...Me too bro....hahaha Its irritatingly addictive..
Its sort of like driving past a bad accident.
YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE
hahaha.
Just SHOCKED that this didn’t just riffle up the charts......THUNDERBIRD!
Great music ,dancing ,and drumming from this group of young men Thanks for sharing this video.
Young men ! They looked like teenagers !
There is so much awesomeness here. Stepping in unison, all flannel, good steppin...AWESOME!!!
Six Million views ! No doubt, that none of them at the time, could fathom or imagine, the popularity this performance would ultimately achieve ! Nice going fellas !
Amen, Drummer seemed the best of the bunch...
7+ million 07/14/22. Hehehe
A buncha guys from Mamaroneck what hit da big time on Ted Macks...Richie, Robbie. Ricky, Joey, and Ralphy...lol
Wow!…. I’m surprised that these guys didn’t take off? They’re extremely awesome!
see the dance solo for explanation
They took the kid to a headologist and a head that big could never support life. That was a dance? I thought he was having a seizure or that head got out of balance.
Never watched Freddy do the Freddy (and the dreamers) ??? @@fuzzybutkus8970
I'll tell you why the Continentals and other bands like them didn't take off, what year is this? 1961? In three years 1964 February the Earth will be knocked off its axis and the world would" never be as it was " The BEATLES " !
I’m 64 and from the west coast. I’ve never heard of the Continentals, but they’re so damn funky I can’t stop watching these cool daddyos.
The got the flannel shirts like The Beach Boys
I was eight years old living in Denver, Colorado. There is simple talent in this group and they would have been very popular in school and with the girls. There was an innocence and nostalgia in this music that has long since been lost. After 1964, pandora's box would open, culminating with the end of an era, Woodstock.
That's the dance that I do every Friday when I clock out of work.
Dale's Drum Channel Zero 🤣🤣
Love that!!
Only problem is now it makes my knees hurt!! :-)
Dale have you been released yet?
That was soooo funny!
God bless 'em, the drummer tore it up.
Life was much more simple back then. I breezed through the 50s and 60s.
You must be white 😂
This is so entertaining. I never tire of watching it. It really stands the test of time.
I loved the Ted Mack original amateur hour !!! Watched it every Sunday. ... best show on tv ... 😃🎶🎵🎵🎶🎵🎶⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️♥️
Long before Star Search - Back when TV was worth watching.
@@kennethohmert3128 Star search was a good show
, it was well produced and I loved Ed McMahon ;

You got to give him a lot of credit just to do that dance on national tv. I like to see him do that same dance today. Anyway a cool performance.
Oh yeah, the kid had nerve.
The more i play this clip the more i love this song and these young guys it's raw but they are so good, would love to know more of what happened to these guys.
First thing is thank you so much John Sarlo for sharing this. I was watching another video and saw this on the side and wondered who were "The Continentals", so gave it a click. This is one of those videos that brings joy and makes you smile. The lead has a great voice and some great moves. The drummer was no slouch either. Great stuff.
oh la la! those very skilled foot steps . I never knew this band existed thank you.
And you thought"Boy Bands": were something new !!! I LOVE THIS SONG !!!
Great energy...put their all into this song and Music.
Garage Rock at it's absolute finest!!
No, some friends and I were better but we had other things to do so we just did it in the basement and had a lot of fun with it.
These guys were great! A helluva lot better than many successful bands today!
I used to watch Ted Mack with my father on Sunday, along with College Bowl. After dinner Wonderful World of Disney and Bonanza.
so so cute... this song has never left my broken humble heart...
Love this! Man, what a different time we live in now.
Terrific surf style rock & roll, here. Great lead vocal and dance too and a proper and very well played traditional style drum 🥁 break. Loved the whole thing- a great vibrant young outfit typical of those times.
Rock & Roll will never die:/ Chris 🎼
Traditional grip, too
Man, could that singer ever MOVE!
yes he can.
sry i'm not english and don't see this type of sentence construction with the word "ever" very often
These guys were awesome. Unique..Young..The lead vocalist had the moves..Gutsy Performance…THUNDERBIRD!
I tried that dance at the club last year and was banned for life.
lol best reaponce i seen all year funnnnny

I tried it last night. Put my back out, and my wife left me
This was so cool to watch. A drum solo instead of a guitar solo, a little dance before Michael Jackson did so. This was just cool. Live performance too with no lip sync. Great post.

This is nice to see. They were talented.
Now THIS band is SO COOL! Three guitars with NO BASS! Ya gotta love ‘em!

Even more impressive... no guitar cords! ;)
The first couple of electric guitar groups I was in, in 1964, didn't have a bass.

Related to your post, here in Arizona we have a small town called Dudleyville. Most of the men there are named Dudley, and therefore are stereotypically dull. The women are frustrated, so it's a good place for cool guys to visit and hook up with those ladies!
Cara o rock and roll desta época é o melhor, é rock de verdade.
Have to say , this was surprisingly Awesome. Watching it for my fifth time.
Can't beat the 50s and 60s all fresh Garage bands!
Instead of "Garage" bands today...it's "Garbage" today...
Damn ! I didn’t know Wally Cleaver could dance like that !! Go kid go !
June taught him all those moves!
Mr. Cleaver was tough on the beaver.
Love this ,imagine going to the hop and been a teenager in 50s and early 60s America, not sure what year this but it's got a rockin late 50s sound but an early 60s dance .gues about 1960
I was twelve when tha came out, but the dancing reminds me of the 60’s!
Very good retro music, thanks from Nezaland City México.
I once auditioned for this show in a downtown Jacksonville hotel. We were a trio who played and sang, "Twilight Time." I used my brother's nearly still brand new 1960 Jazzmaster and PRO amp. And oh yeh ... we were sent home packin'.
A lot of people don't seem to realize that this was over two years before any of us ever heard of The Beatles. They were ahead of their time as many have noted. I loved it.
*ImaCaMan* I don't know if these kids were ahead of their time, and I don't think they, in any way, sound like the Beatles would sound. These kids were playing Surf Music which was huge back in the early 1960s, and they wore matching clothes, something that was common for rock groups back then. This isn't taking away from their talent, as they sound as good as any professional group of musicians. That drummer, in particular, is throwing down.
Didn't intend to mean that they sounded like the Beatles. However, a guitar-driven rock band in 1961 was a rarity. I was there. :)
*ImaCaMan* That's cool. I wasn't there, born in 1965, but I'm pretty sure guitar driven rock bands were fairly common in the early 1960's. Dick Dale, The Ventures, the Beach Boys, the Chantays, the Shadows, the Safaris...heck any Surf Music biggies of that time were guitar driven. In fact I think it was Dick Dale who said he wanted the guitars to sound like what surfers would hear when a wave came in; he also said the real surf music was instrumental and that the vocal groups above weren't 'surf music', but were 'surf vocals'. At both's cores, however, was the driving guitar beat.
Yeah, I should have added "..that sing." The Beach Boys were certainly ones, however they were still playing in high schools in 1962. The others are all instrumental groups, which most of them were at that time. Lot's of exceptions, Buddy Holly and the Crickets come to mind, but in 1961 bands that played their own music and sang were a rarity. Anyway, a lot of great music back then.
Surf music was not popular in 1961. It was soon going to be, but I agree, these kids had a sound a bit before it was popular.
These Kids Had It Going !! Wish They Had Made It - Great Example Of Italian Street Rock !!!!
I'm glad that - 58 years later - they finally got famous.
'Bout fuckin' time.
You think maybe the drummer honed his chops in the marching band?
Lol...🤔🤔🤣

Keep in mind before commenting!
1)They were normal in height and they were only teenagers 14-16 average height being 5’5-5’8. Meaning They hadn’t fully grown into their adult height!
2)The way the camera is pointed and the lens that was equipped made it look like their heads were bigger than their bodies. The cameras height is pointed from above to show the dance moves resulting in having the head as the first view shot. If it was leveled it would look normal.
3) They were a local band that performed only once on LIVE television! During Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour where all kinds of bands performed and all kinds of talent was shown. Performing LIVE as is happened!
So Them being kind of awkward, You can only imagine being a teenager performing on live television for the first time ever with thousands of people watching I think you’d be in fear of messing up or being nervous or not really knowing what to expect.
4) Those Dance moves were popular during That time! Through out time all styles of dances have changed.
I personally think modern dancing has become ridiculous like “Dapping” or “Flossing”
5)This band would soon separate as it wasn’t a serious band, I doubt they ever thought they were going to be huge. It was something they did for fun something a lot of teenagers did.
Even 2 years later some of them were drafted into the Vietnam War.
6) They were original this was their music their style that they had.
All garage bands shared the same line up and traditions of having the same matching outfits or band uniforms for performing.
And before The Beach Boys we’re officially a band this band was already singing about cars with surf like instrumental sounds.
Owen Owen yeah but did you see the size of his HEAD🎃... the wee Dwarf
How do explain that MASSIVE HEAD !
Right on
There are too many critics out there that do not have the appreciation of raw talent. In 1961 this was pretty damn good. No matter what these dated clowns think, THIS WAS TALENT!!!
There's awesome loving hard working mothers behind that performance.
1961 dad - "Young man I want that shirt tucked in this instant!"
Actually tucked shirts were considered rebellios since cholos greasers and mobsters tucked in there shirts
