After owning the 2016 Allez e5 for nearly a month now and having used it daily on rides of significant length, I can confirm that the brakes are rock solid.
Great video - good to see a review situated in Aus, and some nice footage of some of the great rides through the various roads and national parks around Northern Sydney.
This is convenient, but for the people who want the most performance/dollar and has the dedication, look to ebay/craigslist and build your bike from scratch. +Danial Arif I agree with your point and I also think more people should build their own bikes for performance/cost effectiveness, but you need an in-depth mechanical experience and knowledge to build a bike from scratch and most beginners learn that knowledge from playing around with their first "completely built" bikes. i don't recommend people attempting to build a bike without having the mechanical knowledge required for the job.
+rickroll4321 Plus, buy your bikes from local dealers, they are having a hard time staying in business with everyone cutting cost online. Everyone needs a reliable bike shop locally for those tune ups, tires, upgrades. Not everyone can do this themselves.
bike co-ops are a great source of older quality parts for way low prices. I've built several fixies for commuting over the years and recently bought a sora equipped road bike (my first, a gavin nouvo) for $300, barely used, versus the $800 msrp, which unfortunately was stolen. Building up from parts is rewarding but its easy to let costs get away from you, especially if you encounter compatibility issues (speaking from experience, just because it looks like a 27.2 seatpost doesn't mean it is lol). Buying a complete machine used makes more sense based on my experience, especially if you need something to ride while you collect parts. As you outgrow components you can replace them, and you tend to better prioritize your purcases this way (ie good wheels, tires and drivetrain verses ultralight bars/stems/seatposts etc, which can be very tempting when scanning craigslist/ebay) Also, high quality older steel frames can be excellent and can save you a ton of bank. You'll save more weight sweating it out on a slightly heavier bike, and in the case of a minor accident you can usually straighten the frame or fork. Tires can be bought on sale online (oh no, support the lbs of course!) but just make sure to check reviews and make sure they're worth whatever you're paying Basically i completely agree with your two cents, lol
Thanks for the review! Really appreciate doing stuff for the rest of us without deep pockets. I personally ride a 2015 CAAD8 and it's just an awesome bike. The Allez was a close second back when I was shopping and I can imagine it being a great bike just as well. More power!
In general, if you're planning to get your first ever road bike, I would recommend getting an endurance road bike with an aluminium frame and a low end group set. Don't go fancy and buying an expensive bike, get a feel of what road cycling is first, and if you feel like you want to take it seriously then consider buying an expensive road bike.
Eric Z, that's a good question to ask but doubtful Shirako will answer since it's been a year since his post. At what price point should one spend to get a decent entry level road bike? $500-650? Spend too little and get a crappy bike that's a waste of money and maybe put you off on biking altogether. I figure under $1k or thereabouts will whet your whistle and you may have a good enough bike to last you a long time and or for resale.
IT, please clarify which Allez bike? There are 9 variations of the Allez on the Specialized website. There are 2 that sell for $750 the "Allez E5" and an "Allez" and for $980 a "Allez E5 SPORT" (as shown in this review). Where is this on sale for 30% off and for which bike?
It's really almost impossible to make a bad brakeset the differences in braking are almost entirely dependent upon brake-pad compounds and so a bike with not-great brakes can be easily fixed (just buy Koolstop pads or shimano high-end pads / holders).
Completely agree PBS Mahapatra! I have a CAAD 8 Tiagra with upgraded wheel set & tires ( mavic aksium & Conti GP 4000s II) as well as Specialized Tarmac Ultegra with same Contis. Not a great difference in a bike 1/3 the price
1000 can get you a good bike, but look out for end of season deals and spend 25-30 % more will get your awesome! I paid 1305 for my CAAD10 Force at 16.75 pds stocks, It is a little pocket rocket. If you want to buy these under 1k bikes and lose weight later on you will spend more than the 305 bucks I paid over the 1k.
You guys should include Diamondback bikes in your reviews - some of their lower to mid range bikes in the Century series are simply stunning value for money.
As long as there are people who will pay about anything for a road bike, you are going to have all kinds of bikes. Local bike shops have notoriously high prices but seem to sell out anyway. For general exercise riding however, and on relatively flat ground, tires are about everything. Put fairly thin 100 psi tires with limited treads on the bike and you are going to fly. with a minimum of peddle pressure. Aluminum bikes in the $250 to $400 price range bought online will do fine for those needs. In some cases you will need to immediately swap out the tires to something like the Continental 120's (that's psi). I run 100 psi on a $400 aluminum frame bike and peddle pressure is mostly gravity alone on a local riverside bike trail. At 81 years of age I do 12 to 13 mph in no-wind 3 mile stretches between stops. I never stop peddling (coast) during that 3 mile stretch. I try to beat 15 minutes. Down wind I've done as low as 12 minutes.
another great video ;) the bike i use for racing is a specialized secteur sport which was about 700 pounds, for touring i use a ridgeback journey with alfine gears
Awesome video. I liked the Specialized Allez E5 Sport. I was thinking about buying a new fork to my MTB but now that I saw this (and I was looking for a road bike because the old one I have is crashed) I'd better start saving some pesos more.
I really appreciate the time put in on this testing. Have you done other types of bike testing for 2016 models in the Fat Tire bikes that are so popular now for winter riding??
Should of added a Triban 540 to the mix - I have one as my first road bike and i absolutely love it after a few upgrades. Has almost the same features but a 105 groupset which is better than Sora.
As an owner of a Trek 1.1 I can certify that the brakes and tires are absolutely awful. Neither have any grip, and they are possibly the two most important parts on the bike that need grip.
+Javier Valles I upgraded my 1.1's wheels and tires, and my new Conti GP4000 tires are the best thing you could possibly change, they've easily absorbed bumps that would have definitely punctured the tube, and they grip and corner much, much better. As for brakes, I slow down way before blind turns and do everything to avoid an emergency brake :)
i own trek 1.2 and i agree with the statement in this video. brake is too weak its almost dangerous and the tire is too narrow. Trek is not keeping with the trend with their 1 series models.
Thanks for the reviews as I'm a newbie looking for my first road bike. I'm runner, but would like to do some more duathlons. I test drove a Felt model that was entry level along with Specialized Allez. They sold both brands at my local bike shop. They felt fairly close, but wondering if the price different of 200 was worth going with Allez. Allez was higher.
I like it, but I can't say I love it. I love how it looks. But it is made to put your body in a more aerodynamic position meaning it's uncomfortable than some other bikes in the price range and caliber. I can barely touch my toes, so I haven't been able to ride more than 10km on it without my back making me want to stop and take stretch breaks. I think if I work on my flexibility for the next 3 months, I think it won't be an issue, which is what I plan on doing. The bike seat is not that comfortable as mentioned by many reviews.
The 2017 came out already. You can see it on the website. Just different colors, but supposedly same components. I actually prefer the 2016 black frame with white lines.
Hmm, thanks for that because I too can't touch my toes so am now after reading your feedback tipping back towards the Giant Defy, I want to be comfortable to enable longer times in the saddle. Now I just have to decide between carbon and Tiagra, or alloy and 105. Your thoughts?
Am upgrding from my hybrid. I ride 30-40kms daily, 60+ on weekends, just completed my 1st 200BRM on my hybrid. Wanna know if the Specialized Allez with it's 'relaxed race geometry' is ideal for long brevets(400,600kms). An endurance bike should to the trick but tried this model & it really 'zipped' compared to the giant defy. Defy was marginally more comfy but looking for speed too as majority of the time i'l be riding 40-50kms.. Not planning any type of competitive cycling but definitely wanna cycle that'l respond when I stretch my legs.
you guys are not fans of Felt branded bikes? I'm currently running around in a 2014 Felt F75 with stock cxp22 wheels with Michelin pro4 endurance tires. Very comfortable ride and under $1000(older models).
An American who uses the made up word "aloomeneeum". GROOAAN!! If you want to be a fake European just speak another language poorly. Don't butcher your own language.
Just a quick question, What would be the main difference of Merida Ride and Merida Scultura? Which one would offer a comfortable and more upright position (For long rides)? Thank you!
Ok I know the video clearly states that the review was for big brand bikes but I still think that so long as you know your size getting something like the Nashbar road 105 bike is a way better valuable. Listed at $899 and often on sale for 25% off ($690) it comes with a Shimano 105 groupset (FSA Crank) and Shimano RS01 wheelset. I'm sure the frame is a bit heavier but I think just the components make it well worth it.
Could you please do this for different price brackets, like $1500 and $2000? And also, as I've heard 2016 labeled as the year of the disc, maybe have a category just for disc road bikes (that don't completely break the bank). Thanks.
looking for my 1st Road bike I've saw a dawes giro 700 in my local bike shop but I've never heard of them are these bikes any good? any info would be appreciated thanks
Well made Video and great advice but I have to say the are plenty more bikes that could have made it at a cheaper price. ie Scott Speedster 10 or 20. with even better gearing at the same cost! 😊
Please, i seriously need to know this. As of now, i have finally made the choice to go with the Specialized Allez E5 Sport. The problem is that i cant find this lovely black/white color anywhere. Where do i get this? Thank you in advance
Question: can you reduce the tire size from 26" to 24" and expect the bike to set a little lower? I inherited two 26" vintage road bikes, but my nuts are pressed too tight on the top tube? Or any other suggestions?
thank you for this video I'm going to buy the Allez I just found it online for 690 its right were i want to be for my first good road bike thanks again
I see a Specialized Allez E5 for $690 and a Specialized Allez E5 SPORT (shown in this review) for $980 at one bike shop online. You aren't confusing the two are you? The first has Claris parts and the SPORT has SORA. Is the SPORT worth the price difference of $290?
I ride specialized allez elite 2015 as my first roadbike comes with Shimano tiagra drive train. IMO the only bad part is the wheel and tyre. even it's 25c, I already experience a puncture under 300km ride. it's heavy and terrible bone stock to push the budget off. change the wheel and tyres it's a really nice bike.
+Raymond Yáng I ride the same bike and had problems with the factory tires. I swapped those to gatorskins, but what wheels did you put on yours? I'm not willing to invest the money on Zipps which are more expensive than the bike itself. Appreciate any info!
I just bought a CAAD8 because it was Cannondale, and $570. I'm glad I probably won't regret my hasty decision to go Cannondale. Then again, you can't really regret going Cannondale lol
You made an excellent choice with the CAAD 8. My LBS let me test ride it when it came time to upgrade my ride. For me, it came down to two, the CAAD 8 and the Bianchi Virane. Both offered more aggressive profiles coupled with (admittedly not much) comfort as a more race oriented bike could offer. I went with the Bianchi for purely aesthetic reasons as the fire-engine red of the Bianchi just screams "Look at ME!" while the CAAD 8 offering was a more muted bronze on black. either way, both were on offer for about the same price of US$900 and I could have gone either way and been happy with either. Keep riding and enjoy :)
+BikeRadar I don't believe I've seen any of your guys stuff in 4k, any plans in the future? Ide love to see what you guys can do with that A7, thanks guys
+luis vega Sadly, we don't have a 4k camera in the team yet. Because our video team is based in the UK, we used a freelancer for this shoot. It's something we're looking at for the future though.
+Bas Leurink It's the Day of the Living short sleeve from Cycology. Tell them we sent you! - www.cycologygear.com/Day-of-the-Living-Mens-Cycling-Jersey-ProductPage
+BikeRadar as an poor aussie here who's into Mountain Biking would there be any chance of a top 5 or 10 globally available MTB's under $1000 - $1500 AU, the last video of that sort had bikes pretty just available in the UK :(
+Rafael “TheRafinator” Joerg For a few reasons it's a really tough test to put together, but we are working on something very similar so watch this space!
The E5 bike. Is there a height limit for the bike? for younger riders like me is there a minimal height for it? im 14 and im really short so before considering it i want to know if ill be able to ride it
No Canyon/Rose,...? Ok i get (a bit) why but those are the bikes that really have good value! Btw Europeans have the € u could've mentioned it to it's about €920.
Brady Farrugia the focus AL bike is a great bike as also the giant defy. the focus is a rougher ride than the defy but is a very responsive bike because of its stiffness as mentioned in the video. the defy is the bike to get if you want comfort. but if you like to get up and go the when you need to the focus is your choice. i own a focus carbon bike and my brother owns the aluminum and they are about equal in performance. i wanted a defy first but got upset at the LBS so i went with the focus haha. for comfort def go with the defy.
I love my Allez and it looks beautiful. An important point because it makes me want to ride it.
Just came home with the 2016 Allez e5 Sport in Black as in the review ... beautiful Bike and very happy!
This video needs an update for 2020!

Alltough i am not planning on buying a road bike i must admit i watched the whole video and it was pretty awesome !!

+Βαγγελης Μανουσακης Same!
+Βαγγελης Μανουσακης Shut up greek.
Thanks Connor.Really appriciate it bro
Keko Annoan What is wrong with greeks?
After owning the 2016 Allez e5 for nearly a month now and having used it daily on rides of significant length, I can confirm that the brakes are rock solid.
Had the felling specialized was going to be the best all arounder!!
Great video - good to see a review situated in Aus, and some nice footage of some of the great rides through the various roads and national parks around Northern Sydney.
I'm surprised the B'Twin Triban 540 didn't make it into this review. Full 105 Groupset and respectable Mavic wheels for £600? Seems like a great buy.
I was looking at that as well as a few others but they don't ship to the U.S.
This is convenient, but for the people who want the most performance/dollar and has the dedication, look to ebay/craigslist and build your bike from scratch.
Ksyrium or any other bombproof wheel set - $200
Frameset ~ 300
105/Sram rival - 300
Saddle(GET THE RIGHT ONE) - $50
Pedals - $30
Tires (budget bikes are notorious for coming with slow, lousy slippery-ass tires, but you SHOULD NOT skimp on tires. Get the best. eg conti gp4000s - $100
Misc - $50
= Slightly more than 1k, but you pay no tax :)
In the end you get a bike that performs leaps and bounds better than any NEW bike in that price range or even slightly above, coupled with that feeling of riding on something YOU made yourself. It's orgasmic.
Just my 2 cents, good luck.
As you outgrow components you can replace them, and you tend to better prioritize your purcases this way (ie good wheels, tires and drivetrain verses ultralight bars/stems/seatposts etc, which can be very tempting when scanning craigslist/ebay)
Also, high quality older steel frames can be excellent and can save you a ton of bank. You'll save more weight sweating it out on a slightly heavier bike, and in the case of a minor accident you can usually straighten the frame or fork.
Tires can be bought on sale online (oh no, support the lbs of course!) but just make sure to check reviews and make sure they're worth whatever you're paying
Basically i completely agree with your two cents, lol
Thanks for the review! Really appreciate doing stuff for the rest of us without deep pockets. I personally ride a 2015 CAAD8 and it's just an awesome bike. The Allez was a close second back when I was shopping and I can imagine it being a great bike just as well. More power!

I love my market mom bike feel , but it's too heavy . Haha
Shirako what do you recommend?
Eric Z, that's a good question to ask but doubtful Shirako will answer since it's been a year since his post. At what price point should one spend to get a decent entry level road bike? $500-650? Spend too little and get a crappy bike that's a waste of money and maybe put you off on biking altogether. Shirako that's what I am doing. Right now I love it.

one of the best Bikeradar's video. can you guys make another similiar concept with different price range/type of roadbike?
It's really almost impossible to make a bad brakeset the differences in braking are almost entirely dependent upon brake-pad compounds and so a bike with not-great brakes can be easily fixed (just buy Koolstop pads or shimano high-end pads / holders).
pretty awesome and honest review. I own a Caad 8, upgraded the wheelset and drivetrain and now it can compete with any carbon race bike.
Been looking at getting a road bike for awhile, this video definitely helped. Thanks!
Scattante carbon (cfr) with 105, just saying. Currently 999.00. Not super stiff, but good to get you going!
When is the end of season deals, after summer?
thanks for the review! I enjoyed the clear explanation of the reasons why you chose the specialize
Its overpriced. There are good brands (focus, haibike , gt) where u will get full Tiagra bike for that price.
Thank you for the video. I just bought the Specialized for my first road bike.
Very comprehensive video. Im glad I went with Cannondale, although I have the Tiagra groupo on my CAAD 8.
You guys should include Diamondback bikes in your reviews - some of their lower to mid range bikes in the Century series are simply stunning value for money.
Specialized Allez still kicking strong from the budget versions to the more premium versions. Awesome bike all around, fuck yeah.
Awesome video! I always wanted to know which one should I choose between specialized and trek! Now I have the winner! Thanks!!!

I am wanting to purchase my first road bike. I am deciding between the Allez E5 and the Caad 8. Still undecided. I feel either way I can't go wrong.

any difference in the Allez from '13 to '16?

I would like to know if this is after or before taxes...because, you know, USA don't include taxes in the pricing while everyone else does.

I ended up getting a Reid Falco then recently upgraded ta a Pinarello
Could you please do this for different price brackets, like $1500 and $2000?
And also, as I've heard 2016 labeled as the year of the disc, maybe have a category just for disc road bikes (that don't completely break the bank). Thanks.
Great video! How do your bike testers like the cycology clothing kits?
Thanks for such a helpful review. I was wondering if you guys knew anything about the Bianchi's Via Nirone?
looking for my 1st Road bike I've saw a dawes giro 700 in my local bike shop but I've never heard of them are these bikes any good? any info would be appreciated thanks
Well made Video and great advice but I have to say the are plenty more bikes that could have made it at a cheaper price. ie Scott Speedster 10 or 20. with even better gearing at the same cost! 😊
Why is the Specialized allez e5 sport in black/white if they don't have it on their website?
weight is not commented on? I would imagine that bicycles in this price range vary quite a bit.
Please, i seriously need to know this. As of now, i have finally made the choice to go with the Specialized Allez E5 Sport. The problem is that i cant find this lovely black/white color anywhere. Where do i get this? Thank you in advance
Nice Work.
How does the ridley damocles 3 fit in this group. How good is it?
Question: can you reduce the tire size from 26" to 24" and expect the bike to set a little lower? I inherited two 26" vintage road bikes, but my nuts are pressed too tight on the top tube? Or any other suggestions?
Where can i get the bike jersey at 3:29 ?
The focus is the sexiest one. I have it and still ride it :)
Very helpful, thank you!
thank you for this video I'm going to buy the Allez I just found it online for 690 its right were i want to be for my first good road bike thanks again
4years ago 2019 spring now!
Specialized Alway the winner
+Cobra Drums I'm just bought mavic aksium with continental GP tires and still waiting the wheelset come to my home. really need to try other wheels.
+Raymond Yáng Appreciate the info. Gonna look into some alternatives myself. Happy riding!
Is it better than the Allez e5sport? In what ways?
Any bikes that last long, look good, and fast and for city ride from Giant?
This thing works great 100%
like the color grading on this one !!
+luis vega Thanks! The whole thing was shot on a Sony A7 in SLOG, so it grades up beautifully!
Great video, thanks
I wonder if 2019 alez elite or sport is as good as 2016 brands? wanna get my first alez elite
Does anybody know what jersey the tester is wearing at 3:30?
+Bas Leurink It's the Day of the Living short sleeve from Cycology. Tell them we sent you! - www.cycologygear.com/Day-of-the-Living-Mens-Cycling-Jersey-ProductPage
Please review the Marin Four Corners
Is it still the same now? Or are there better bikes?
So can i use 28 tire in Specialized allez sport e5 2016?
How do these bikes compare to a Fuji Roubaix 1.5?
Can any person say why they chose to opt for the Merida Ride 200 instead of Merida Scultura 200. It seems like a stupid choice to me.
I can't find the Specialized Allez E5 sport in sweden ): only usa....
BikeRadar sounds good to me, I'll keep an eye out :)
The E5 bike. Is there a height limit for the bike? for younger riders like me is there a minimal height for it? im 14 and im really short so before considering it i want to know if ill be able to ride it
Donut Pundah not at all my son whom is 14 and is 5'4 has one it's great actually
whatever they say, my trek 1.1 is very nice ride. very stiff and lightweight
No Canyon/Rose,...? Ok i get (a bit) why but those are the bikes that really have good value! Btw Europeans have the € u could've mentioned it to it's about €920.
I am considering either the Giant Defy 1 or the Focus Cayo 105? What do you recommend?
Brady Farrugia the focus AL bike is a great bike as also the giant defy. the focus is a rougher ride than the defy but is a very responsive bike because of its stiffness as mentioned in the video. the defy is the bike to get if you want comfort. but if you like to get up and go the when you need to the focus is your choice. i own a focus carbon bike and my brother owns the aluminum and they are about equal in performance. i wanted a defy first but got upset at the LBS so i went with the focus haha. for comfort def go with the defy.
Bianchi Via Nirone 7 is under a grand. Its a shame you couldn't include that.
awesome job. well done ; )
