Don’t know why I haven’t seen this video until today.great info. The art of trapping brings together a multitude of skills from woodworking to welding and mechanical understanding. I assume the hand plane brought the early years of a apprenticeship program back to mind. Thanks for sharing.
Very easy to understand and and great info thanks again. have the issue of the basswood being really hard to find at local hardware stores the pine board was great .
Watch all your videos just came across this one , there may already be one on here I haven’t ran across yet but need to show us how to make a coyote and fox board , new getting into it this year!
What are the dimensions you use for a fox board and coyote board? The ones online seem super long and wide. One said 12" wide at base for coyote I have my first fox and can't stop watching your stuff. Great content, I think I have a new hobby.
watched most of your trapping and fur preparation videos and got to say I really enjoy them. I live in south Georgia and have just started trapping. I have been trapping beaver and have pelted out a couple over the last month. They have started getting green mildew on them. What would you recommend I do to keep them from doing that?
+Trapping Preacher thanks. to much humidity. living as far south as you do your going to have to store and dry them someplace with very low humidity. especially when your trapping them in the summer
Could you do a video on the split board stretchers? I know that you use NAFA measurements on the with but how long are they and what kind of wood do you use?
im new to trapping i was wondering if you dont sell your furs the year you get them can you just keep them and sell them the following year when the prices go back up
nice vid! one thing im going to try is when using the straight edge to "connect the dots" I'm going to try a chalk line instead. I'll put a 8d nail at each point and wrap the chalk line around, maybe could avoid having corners? Awesome vid!
I just made a skinning machine like yours is it supposed to flex a lot at the top or just a little bit. I built it approximately 9' tall and 20" out from stand
I used a wire stretcher and squeezed it down to the with of a 1x8 and it worked great, at least they look really good. Haven't tried them yet so we'll see. Lol...50+ years old wire stretcher.
+Jason Owens It would work. the problem is it is almost impossible to get the edges smooth enough do to the ply's. this is very critical when doing fur in animals. if your doing any amount of fur at all do yourself a favor and just use solid board
If you want to spend more in materials than the cost of buying them, and waste an hour of your life only to end up with a crooked stretcher, this video is for you. Hahaha
So you buy your furs also? Costs more time and money to trap an animal than to buy the skin so if you want to waste time and money you trap animals instead of buying pelts. Right?
@@WildernessMedic that's awesome. There aren't wolves around me or in most of the US that people can trap. Your one of a very small minority of the trappers in the lower 48 apparently, since that's where stu is and the majority of his viewers are judging from the comment section. So the only animal you trap is wolf or do you get way more than the average over here? Bobcats don't bring that much around here, maybe 60 bucks on average, coyote was around 22 bucks, fox around 25, racoon around 13, all according to the trapper association that runs the auctions. So for the vast majority of people a cheaper board would be nice since most of us can't trap wolves and have to be a little more conscience of the money we put it into the hobby. And one other small thing, just because you can't cut a board straight and your carpentry turns out crooked doesn't mean that mine or everyone else's will, that's kind of a silly mindset don't you think? I grew up building wood boats with my dad. Making a board like that straight and even wouldn't even really require much thought for me. Have a good day bud.
Hi bud was wondering if you could please do a video on the measurements for a coon stretcher . I looked in the comments below and I could not find it anymore Thank you and awesome videos you're very very helpful
Good morning Stue. I just wanted to say I watch your videos every morning and you really do help a lot of people out here. What's your thoughts on making adjustable stretchers out of boards like that for wider pelts like coyotes, or is it even necessary .
. Wondering why you couldn't make a 'contoured' template from polycarbonate sheet then drill a set of holes to transfer the grading lengths onto wood to save all the hand measuring ? .
Does it matter if the boards are treated or regular wood...I have some treated 1x8's not being used for anything and thought I would ask your opinion before I use them
Hey man, do you have a video for making a fleshing beam? If not, I'd like to see how you do that - thicker wood and all, not sure if there are such precise measurements. Anyhow, thanks
Great video series! Just a couple of questions... There is no actual tanning, so is your process for someone to receive the fur dried to then be tanned? Also, I saw you turn the coyote hide inside out to dry fur side out, in this video it looks like you're letting them dry skin side out, why is that? thank you for the information!
+3brutepse dont understand your first question. yotes are sold fur out but are boarded fur in to dry for a time, then flipped fur out to finish the drying process
This Is why the info you you put up is so great, the simple version helps so many more people.
+backyardmeat thanks
Great role model very humble

This was literally the most best board making video I watched yet I'm so ready to make my first board nice video
+Wildlife Hunter thanks
Will you do a video on an adjustable coyote stretcher? Hell even wire stretchers will break a person on a budget.
Thanks for the videos.
Awesome videos my man, keep it up. Truly appreciate the time you take to do these.
Your videos are awesome! You rock bro!
Excellent video as usual
+Stewart Frerotte thanks

I'm just starting out with furs this year mainly all coyotes. Can you put up a video on how to make your adjustable coyote boards?
Could you do a video on the split board stretchers? I know that you use NAFA measurements on the with but how long are they and what kind of wood do you use?
Good video and very helpful. Good luck this upcoming Season
+Austin Deering thanks
I would like to see your skinning station! the electric winch has me wondering.
Can I get your dimensions of fox boards???
Cypress is great
How do you make wedges for the boards?
Thank you much needed first year and most of my budget is going into traps so this is good but how do you make your split boards for your coyotes
+TheBlackRose thanks. Ill try to do a video on them
great video my guy....Could you do one for coyotes and fox by chance? Maybe just go over the size and measurements for us new guys
Would you be willing to do a video on a coyote board? Thanks
Jake Vollink I wouldn't mind to see that either
awesome man. thanks
+joe rager hope it helped
im new to trapping i was wondering if you dont sell your furs the year you get them can you just keep them and sell them the following year when the prices go back up
+powerram92 check your local laws to see if your able to keep them. if so its best to freeze them. humidity is your enemy
You didn't mention where you mark for your pelt sizes.
where do you get basswood for your boards?
Do you have a video on how to make your split board stretchers for coyotes and fox
Well done . Thank you .
+john cole thanks
I have been a carpenter for 30 years I can make board better than skinning. Is there any money at making skinning board ?
nice vid! one thing im going to try is when using the straight edge to "connect the dots" I'm going to try a chalk line instead. I'll put a 8d nail at each point and wrap the chalk line around, maybe could avoid having corners? Awesome vid!
great video!
+Grizz thanks
At the end whats the measurement between the lines?? LM, L, XL, 2 XL.....ect. Excellent video's by the way very Helpful keep em coming
+WVOutdoors Wild and Wonderful no need to have the measurement between the lines. somewhere in the comments i've listed the line measurements
Tried to p.m., however what are the dimensions you use on coyote boards, thanks
Great video
+Redneck838 thanks
What do you do with your hides?
Do you have one for coyote boards?
What is the board for? After scraping, and before tannin?
Stanton Jordan Stretching to sell to the fur market. If you sell to the fur market, you don't tan the hide .
Can you do a coyote board stu?
Do you put any finish on your board ?
+stumax1000 no don't put anything on the board. it will absorb the oils out of the hide
I just made a skinning machine like yours is it supposed to flex a lot at the top or just a little bit. I built it approximately 9' tall and 20" out from stand
+Shoot'em Game Birds not alot but there will be some flex under tension
Awesome.
In TN basswood is easy to find
But it's not cheap... LOL I'm in north Arkansas and the carvers keep it baught up here.
what's the website you use to get the measurements for your fox and coyote stretchers ?
+Kcirtap Retsof nafa.ca
Do you ever varnish them?
+Salmon Hunter no there is no need to. they will soak up fat with use
could you use a wire stretcher and just trace it that way
No. Wire stretchers are not always right
I used a wire stretcher and squeezed it down to the with of a 1x8 and it worked great, at least they look really good. Haven't tried them yet so we'll see. Lol...50+ years old wire stretcher.
Would 1/2" plywood be ok to use?
+Jason Owens It would work. the problem is it is almost impossible to get the edges smooth enough do to the ply's. this is very critical when doing fur in animals. if your doing any amount of fur at all do yourself a favor and just use solid board
could you use plywood for this project?
I wouldn't recommend it. Very rough edges with plywood
Nice
you save time elbow work buying a sheep used electric planer off E-Bay
never mind that question just found this haha
yes it did take power tool ur cordless saw is a power tool
Andrew Murphy he said you can use the hand saw if you need to but for time purposes he used the circular saw
ok
how do make ur k 9 bords
+logan scutt video to come

So you buy your furs also?
Costs more time and money to trap an animal than to buy the skin so if you want to waste time and money you trap animals instead of buying pelts. Right?
@@mikewhitman745 Idk I get $2500 per wolf not counting the fur😉

Do you leave the board bare without treatment like linseed oil?
Shed one hell of a lot of light on the issue! Thank you for all the incredible videos!
Good morning Stue. I just wanted to say I watch your videos every morning and you really do help a lot of people out here. What's your thoughts on making adjustable stretchers out of boards like that for wider pelts like coyotes, or is it even necessary .
How did you learn the skinning trade ?
How about a video on making a fleshing beam... its on my to do list, Thanks
That would be sweet
Great job loved it
Great video. I appreciate your willingness to help others to get into trapping.
+Mark Mckeen thanks
What temperature/humidity is best for drying a pelt?
Could you do a video on your coyote/fox boards? I enjoy your videos by the way, very helpful.
.
Wondering why you couldn't make a 'contoured' template from polycarbonate sheet then drill a set of holes to transfer the grading lengths onto wood to save all the hand measuring ?
.
you should make a video of how to make some coyote split board streachers shure it would help out a bunch of people
Does it matter if the boards are treated or regular wood...I have some treated 1x8's not being used for anything and thought I would ask your opinion before I use them
How'd it go?
Can you use plywood 5/8.
4' foot is a good size you can get 2 out of 8' foot you said it right.
Hey man, do you have a video for making a fleshing beam? If not, I'd like to see how you do that - thicker wood and all, not sure if there are such precise measurements. Anyhow, thanks
+Joe Junior i use a pvc beam
The level you got is best made by "Exact Level"
thank u bubba ur videos help us that drink natty
distance of size marks ?????
S 22”, M 24”, L 27”, XL 29”, 2XL 32”, 3XL 35”
At roughly 40 to 50 feet would it be all right to use 3 inch Steel magnum BB’s. on coyotes.?
I forgot to say 12 gauge 3 inch magnum BBs. Steel.
A hoof rasp works good too for dressing up the edges.
How long is your coyote boards? thanks.
good vidois
+logan scutt thanks
That would be cool to see how to make a coyote board
Great job !!
hey Stu. how the trapping this year? have you started yet
