Info from an old cowgirl. The purchase of the horses will be the cheapest part of your investment. But all the rest is so worth it. I bought my first horse in my 20s. The youngest of my 3 sons has horses, and my granddaughter from my 2nd son shows horses and does high-school rodeo. "Every horse, at one time in their life, deserves the love of a little girl." BTW, I am now 71 years old. I still ride.
I am 69. Don't ride sny more but so wish I could. I had my first horse when I was 42, but wanted one from childhood on. So wonderful for children to have. Teaches them a lot!!
@nancynoascono747 My dad always thought I would grow out of it. Before he passed, he told me he wished he'd have bought me that horse. It's in the blood, and it gets passed on. I probably shouldn't ride some that I do, but it's ride 'em or stay home and I'm not about to stay home.

That is so true, Calling out a plumber or window repair person is more expensive than a specialist doctor, and they also have the longest waiting list. Still they have to decide for themselves. I tried to encourage my son to be a tradie but he hated dirt and spiders! He has ended up a maths teacher. So cool for him,
I loved the back and forth between Laura and Aaron in this video. I laughed out loud several times. I am putting my money on Aaron getting a pool! They so perfectly compliment each other in their approach to their gardens and land. I could see the pool with the pool house and the line of trees flanking the path and then see a wild meadow of flowers on either side of the trees. Best of both worlds.
So glad you are doing your research on horses before making the leap. Years ago, my veterinarian told me, "If you want a horse, just burn a $100 bill everyday". I never got one 😂 🐎
I agree with Aaron on the pool! Nothing better than working in the yard getting all Hot and sweaty after mowing, digging, working, horse back riding etc. and then jumping in your pool! I have had a pool for 30 years and would not want to be without it. My children and neighbor hood kids swam all the time growing up. Now my grandkids and neighborhood grandkids swim in it. Your kids would love it! It is not that much work and besides you can hire someone to take care of it! 😊
On the UA-cam business industry. You two got into it at a really good time. And then, with the pandemic shutdown, your channel, having already been established, took off even more due to folks wanting the knowledge and comfort of gardening. I think you were at the right place at the right time from the beginning.
The Lord gave them so many talents and prompted Laura and Aaron to do what we would all need throughout the pandemic and preparing us for an unknown future time when we will need all the information stored on UA-cam ♥
Aaron, you are SO right about the planning and meetings. It’s like having a committee on committees! If only all people had common sense and reason things would work much more smoothly and be done right the first time. But alas it is not so. We are fortunate to have people like you (also my husband) to do it right the first time. It’s a gift. Oh and Ken, your little insertions are hilarious and appreciated!😂

Keep in mind that automatic waterers in stalls can be a blessing and a curse. You have no way of knowing if the horse is drinking . They will also likely poop in them eventually(some horses, daily!) and if you have one that likes to soak it’s hay, you will have a nasty mess that has to be cleaned daily. And cleaning an auto waterer is much more difficult than dumping and cleaning a bucket that full of poop or has been used to dunk hay.
Aaron is not wrong about the pool. I have had one for 20 years and I couldn't imagine not having one - I get so much yard work done because I can jump in to cool off and then keep going. I am a sun wimp and without it, my yard wouldn't look as good as it does Lol I would give up and go inside
I live in NY and sometimes when I hear you guys talk about weeds I think oh man you have no idea. Haha. Imagine getting rain for weeks and weeks then the sun comes out. If you missed any weed it goes nuts. Or everything germinates at once. It goes crazy! Enjoy your dry climate❤
35:42 AAron this is why my husband left the corporate life. He worked 29 yrs for a major manufacturer in the US. Meeting after meeting and no one could get anything done or the powers that be would hold it up. He’s so happy now that he’s paroled from that (his words not mine…he wasn’t in jail😂)
All that land, you should definitely have a pool! Nothing like finishing up mowing the grass and jumping in the pool on a hot summer day. Our kids loved having a pool and it was a great "hang out" for them with their friends when they got older. Lots of fun pool parties too!
I only have velvet coated hangers, they are great, you should try them Laura! The dry cleaning idea is great too. I bet thrift stores or walmart/target might have them too. I have also had horses for 25 years and I suggest 1. Take lessons to get comfortable around them. 2. Join a pony club or 4H to learn horse husbandry. Having experience under your belt before you start on your own is very important. You need to be able to recognize when they are sick or injured. Because they WILL get sick or injured! Horses are shockingly fragile and disaster prone 😅. Knowing what ab- normal vital signs are is important as well. Just immerse yourself in lessons and the horse world, and when you are comfortable then get your own. As for the layout around the barn, having a sacrifice area where they have access to 24/7 is great for rainy days so you save your pasture. I would then have a few pasture fields off of the sacrifice area so you can rotate where you have the horses to rest certain pastures. Your local extension office can help with types of pasture grass to plant...you for instance dont want to plant tall fescue if you have mares that you want to breed. Lots of info to learn!
I'm with Aaron on getting you own swimming pool. As I grow older (72) I am so thankful that when I am working in the garden, getting achy and sweating, I can just peal off the outer layer and jump into the pool before heading to the house! It has been a blessing to this old gardener and I think it will be helpful for your family and perhaps even your crew and friends as well. Also, the heater is a MUST HAVE for me. Does a wonder for the old muscles and is perfect for pool aurobics!
Great recap! I’m with Aaron on the banning of spraying and weed fabric, I think we’re going to find (too late) that all of these forever chemicals are not only bad for our ecosystem, but also contributing to many of the food sensitivities & other health issues that we’re seeing today; what’s used in, around, and on our food crops ends up in us eventually😢
My teenaged son has wanted to be a paleontologist since he was 4 years old and even though I have my doubts that he can become very successful at it and I'm scared because there doesn't seem to be a lot of job opportunities I am supporting his dream 100% because when someone has that kind of lifelong passion they will be more likely to work extra hard to make their dream come true. I always wanted to be a veterinarian or zoologist. I didnt follow my dream and just started working in factories all my life and there isn't anything worse than regretting not following your dream.
I didn't know the land all belonged to the house at one point, but that makes sense. I don't know if it will be 1000 acres again, but I love that the original homestead is coming back to life somewhat. I'm so enjoying the process. Thanks again
Good Morning. Another Delaware gardener chiming in. Great planning to place the horses in an area that you frequent. If you do not have your eyes on them, they are DOING something, usually not what you would WANT them to be doing.
You two together had me laughing a couple of times, and have to agree with Aaron, we built a pool going on 3 years now, and best decision we made, we live in Texas so get a lot of use out of it, but walking out from your backyard and jumping into the pool any time is the best and morning before any one is up sitting looking at the water and my plants with a cup of coffee it’s heaven. The kids would love it.
Good morning from Delaware Garden Answer friends. Doesn’t have to be a big project just watching you do maintenance around your property is fine with me..
Laura with a "wild" flower field/garden! I can't see it..... You prefer things to be very specific/tidy/orderly, etc. and Aaron's suggestion to imagine the border was perfect. Just wild...I don't think you could handle that. Now a pool....very neat, tidy, pretty, and decorated as it sounded like you've already imagined it. Also, having it right there on your own property...hot evenings you and the kiddos can just go out and get a swim in whenever you wanted. Mom and Dad can come visit you guys! Another fun video! Thank you again. So enjoy you both. :o)
Laura and Aaron, I do have to say you guys balance each other out so perfectly. I'm learning a lot about Aaron since he joined in on Sundays and love the banter between you two on different projects. Love you guys, you make the start of my week happy.
You would appreciate having a pool when your kids are teens. They can swim whenever they want plus it would draw their friends to your house which is the best. Make your house the place that the kids want to be.
On the subject of bumpouts and no water. Our town has islands down main street with tons of bushes and flowers as well as bumpouts. Each small area is assigned to volunteers to weed and water and even plant what they wish. It's beautiful, it works, and there is no lack of volunteers. They are each in control of their own unique area.
Ducks are so much fun. I can see Laura loving them, she loves her chickens. Ducks are chickens with an attitude, where one goes they all go. We have 6 1/2 acres and ours have the run of the place. They are great for the bugs.
Just remember those ducks are going to poop in the pond...and everywhere else. Lol. They are sweet and very social though. We loved ours but they are messy.
Just because we let ours run the 6 1/2 acres doesn't mean that they would, she doesn't let the chickens free range. We have four ducks and with the amount of land we have it isn't a problem. They have the dirt lands and where they want horses down the road nobody said that they weren't going to be in a pen of some sort. The pond would be off limits with any sort of animals they have. @@nancyzimmerman1982
Hi, growing up with a pool was the best experience. I have so many memories of pool parties with friends and just floating and relaxing in the pool. Best times!
Love a red barn. And kudos to you Aaron. Totally agree it's time to plant by the fountain up front. Such an eyesore for your amazing property. How about you take this one on? You'd do a great job and Laura can always redo it next year. I'd watch those videos.
Horse person there. No wild flower meadow. Just plant your pastures now to hay/pasture. You will not regret it. Barns have to be red. 🤣 The little existing barn would be a good size for miniature horses that you can train to pull a cart. Imagine driving around your property in a miniature horse cart. I have a mini horse and two full sized horses and the 26" mini horse is so fun! Minis are a really great way to teach your kids about horse handling and care. Getting two mini horses would be such a great way to start with horses. The kids would have so much fun with them.
Who doesn’t have a wire hanger? Mommy Dearest! 🤣🤣🤣 Hearing Aaron talk about having meetings in order to plant a tree just sounds like all corporate jobs and the red tape involved.
I'm with Aaron on the pool idea. Since you already have a tennis court it makes sense to have a pool in that area for a sports/exercise place. Of course Laura's idea would be beautiful but it's a different short of vibe, more holidays/leisure.
What a treasure of information this video was. I love the way you and Aaron interact..such love. Also the kids,,they add so much joy. We have a granddaughter a lot like Samantha Grace, she is Evelyn Grace she brings so much joy to our lives we enjoy just her every time we're together. Keeps us laughing all the time. Enjoy watching you all. Thank you for sharing with all of us.❤❤❤❤
My favorite video of the week included Laura receiving speeding ticket from Samantha and "I'm watching you" from Benjamin. They are very special children. Have a great week!💕
Same in Southern Illinois. We got 4 inches of snow Friday under ice! I don’t mind, I’m not ready to start gardening yet! I am content with my grocery store flowers for the next month. Then the garden season begins for me. I enjoy the slower winter months and get projects in the house done(I’m hanging wallpaper in bathroom this week) so I can enjoy spring when it comes.
About automatic waters for horses. Be very careful with those as you can't tell if the horses are drinking and if they break and no one notices the horse goes without water. Not enough water leads to colic. I know the automatic waters are a problem because I worked for an equine vet and this happened enough times to know it can be a problem. Glad you are putting paddocks off the stalls. Some people don't do that and the stalls don't get used they end up putting up shelters in paddocks. Not a good use for a barn.
Dry cleaners will normally give you hangers if you just go in and ask. I don't use wire hangers either. So excited for this garden season to see what ideas Laura has. I have learned so much from you all. I have also spent a lot of $$$ on stuff that once I see it on your channel I just can't do without it.😂😂 My next venture is to check out your online store.
My favorite youtube intrests are garden and horses. I couldn't quantify how much valuable information I've learned from watching more than one perspective on a subject! Thanks Laura and Garden Answer family for all your work to share your experiences.😊❤
Ok.. first of all, I have to say that, Aaron, you do have a talent for property development!! And, oh. My. Gosh. What you were saying about the city not having a talent for development. I live in Portland, Oregon, and that happens here as well. I’m no genius, but I see things that just blow my mind. And I have seen exactly what you mentioned about planting trees, and then not watering them!! It’s heartbreaking to watch all those trees die. Thank you again again for such a fun recap video. I love you both and I love your channel and your family.
Aaron I’m so with you ! Just stop trying to please everyone by having meetings and DO it already ! No one will even notice that “they” weren’t asked and the ones that care will soon have something else to grip about 😂.
To learn about taking care of horses, you should volunteer at an Esquine Centre once a week in the winter before you get any horses. You’ll learn a ton! You could use it in your weekly videos too if they are good with it. Also, why not switch your ideas around: horses by the red barn and pool where Laura said; outside the great room. And wildflower meadow by pool?
Great video Laura and Aaron! It's always fun to recatch what I miss from the daily video. And, I love watching and listening to you together. You are such a great team! There's probably not a lot of married couples that can work so closely together and agree on as much as you do. Perfect match!
I really wish I was closer (like when I lived in Boise and was making regular trips to eastern Oregon to visit family that is still there). I’d love to be able to be a resource to you guys when you’re planning for your horses. You are so right to get educated and learn all you can. Get expert guidance from someone who you trust. I tend to agree with Aaron about having a pool. We have a “private” pool that belongs to our subdivision. It’s less than 5 minutes away. But I know the convenience of having one in my own yard would be so ideal for me. The privacy alone would be worth the extra work of maintaining it.
Hi . Your guys are just awesome. Best gardening channel on UA-cam. Such a beautiful family. Looking forward to another year of your projects. 👍. Thank you so much for sharing. . ❤
Skip the horses, add the ducks and a pool! Aaron I totally agree with you! I am sure there are riding barns/lessons near you. It will be far less Hassel!
we had the same thing with our dying tree in the 15' of the city owned area of our front yard. It took forever to get the city to acknowledge the problem, I had meetings in front of our house and was told I couldn't take it down as I would be fined - branches were falling and the trunk was open to borers and ants. I ended up getting an arborist and had their company write the city. it took 6 different contacts to even have them discuss it further. Once decided then they acted. - Now we want a tree to replace it with a tree that I would pay for - that they would ok with- nope - I have to choose their time and their vote. it could be so easy. 🤨
It’s like having one of those dreams where you have all the answers to something. it’s beautiful, and you can’t wait to tell the world. And, then reality starts to set in the more you wake up.
Just love these recaps! Aaron’s explanation of planning. His example of Laura building a beautiful house not thinking of the electricity too funny really needed that laugh 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Kind of wondered how long the red barn would be red…. Duck sanctuary?! You go Laura!
I’m still chuckling about the cartoon “Right” charter comment to Laura’s pairing her planting down this year. Laura and I have the same thought pattern, plant light but darn just one or two more plants could fit in that space. 😜 Then my plan is out of control. 🤯
You would be wonderful to work for….touched my heart when you said “home life is more important than” work, etc. As a Registered Nurse, I worked and raised two children and work never understood that I had a life outside of the hospital. You have such a good ❤, another reason to ❤your posts. Your attitude is what this 🌎 needs more of desperately.
I think it is amazing how U2 complement each other. Laura has the let me create beauty aspect (focused in) and Aaron has the how does it all connect (big picture) What a great compliment to each other!
My son moved from WI to Missouri but missed WI. When building a barn, he used a WI barn design and chose red. I truly believe it is the only red barn (two stories high) in Missouri.
I literally jumped on the garden answers site right after Laura said the sprayer was available and it's out of stock! 😂 SHEESH PEOPLE 😅 I'm sure they'll bring more in.
@@melaniecalderon8973 on Amazon, it states “usually ships in 6-7 MONTHS,” so I consider that the same as being out of stock. I’ve never seen it in any garden centers in my area.
@@melaniecalderon8973 Amazon says it’s “available in 6-7 MONTHS,” which is the same as being sold out to me. I’ve never seen this brand in any of the garden centers in my area…generic sprayers, yes; this Mesto sprayer, no (whether in store or online).
I love how willing you are to talk and learn about horses with us ❤️ you get a lot of good advice from the other people in the horse community each time you share your ideas with us. Especially when you’ve not nailed them down or buttoned them up yet. So anything I saying with the knowledge that your in a listen and learn phase of the horse barn project, and that I’m eager to toss my two cents in for your consideration. Re: paddocks, stalls, arena. Visually this will be gorgeous, and can work over all… Keep in mind that horses are heard animals and will benefit from living a life together as much as can be accomplished. Separation should be build into the design because ultimately it will be necessary sometimes. The idea of having one horse stalls with attached one horse paddocks comes from boarding barns where none of the horses belong to the same people and/or move in and out frequently; as with breading/training/veterinarian. Your horses would only need to be keep separate for specific purposes; introduction, weaning, lameness, or should permanent separation truly be required. Otherwise it would be ideal for it to be assumed that the horses will turn out together, shelter from wind and rain together. They are heard animals but even more than that they are prey animals. They get a lot of comfort from sleeping together, eating together, and being given the opportunity to develop a “lead mare.” Which is the older, wiser, calmer alpha horse that lets the other mates and geldings know if something is worth getting spooked over. That won’t happen if they all live in relative isolation and view each other as in separate silos. I say other mares and geldings because you won’t have a stallion, the males you have will be gelded, and will often be lower in the hierarchy than an older wiser mare in a herd dynamic. Ps. Don’t have a stallion under any circumstances, even if given to you free. They require a leave of care not enjoyable for beginners and even the majority of advanced riders.
My husband insists on landscape fabric or black plastic with river rocks over it. So we have this around our house. 🤨 my strategy is to continue planting and remove these materials but by bit and replace with mulch😉
My first thought when I saw the red barn was that it is so charming. I vote for keeping it red, but white would make it seem more connected to the rest of the property.❤

Same!!! Underwear=swimsuit!
I agree with having a pool. With the heat you get after working in the garden it is so refreshing to cool off.
Laura, that is the PERFECT place for a pool! And, I vote for a wildflower meadow.
Love when Ken drops in his little comments! "Riiiight.. " "Nope"
Then you know where they are!!!❤❤❤
Hello from Scotland. First proper day in the garden this year with some decent sun. Feel much better 🎉
They are going to take over the pond
Do ducks bother the landscaping or grass?
Ducks make a huge poopy mess
Just remember those ducks are going to poop in the pond...and everywhere else. Lol. They are sweet and very social though. We loved ours but they are messy.
Just because we let ours run the 6 1/2 acres doesn't mean that they would, she doesn't let the chickens free range. We have four ducks and with the amount of land we have it isn't a problem. They have the dirt lands and where they want horses down the road nobody said that they weren't going to be in a pen of some sort. The pond would be off limits with any sort of animals they have.

I could listen to the two of you chat all day. You are both just so delightfully different and talented.
Hearing Aaron talk about having meetings in order to plant a tree just sounds like all corporate jobs and the red tape involved.
Any time the government is involved ruins all thoughts of common sense.
It also ruins creativity!@@shirleygermain5707
So true!!!
and creativity!@@shirleygermain5707
I don't have wire hangers. Amazon has inexpensive topiary forms.
Aaron, on the pool issue; TRY to see Laura's vision, and YOU draw it out! THIS is the way to convince her to put that pool you want in!!! 😊😊😊
Laura….”aaaand I shut down” 😂😂 Perfect insight to how things work. ❤
I'm with Aaron on the pool idea. Since you already have a tennis court it makes sense to have a pool in that area for a sports/exercise place. Of course Laura's idea would be beautiful but it's a different short of vibe, more holidays/leisure.
Aaron you are hilarious but so honest! That is how people behave! 😂outlaw everything! Lol
"I'm paring everything down" , edit cut in: "riiiiggghhht“ - this made me laugh out loud so much!! Same, Laura, same 😂
What a treasure of information this video was.
I am so glad Aaron asks the questions that come to my brain and get an immediate answer ♥
Maybe Monica should buy that house. Having your sister close would be great. 😊
We are still snowing ... Oh how lovely you can start gardening....
Same here, I can't wait for spring.
You can buy ‘bands’ that you put on the end of a rolling pin & they do the same thing
I luv the little red barn❤❤
Pasture with running horses ❤
Good Morning from Coastal North Carolina 🌸🌸
When hubby is a pain in your behind because he completes you.😂💗 So love you two!
Mediator says. Get a pool and keep the barn red. 🤣🤣💞
Yayy for the red barn! It adds so much interest to the landscape esp in winter.
Love the red barn, we had a red barn when I lived in western NY. Loved it!
Keep the barn red! It is part of the history of the property!
No pool! Go to moms.
Awesome team y’all have.
Aaron I’m so with you ! Just stop trying to please everyone by having meetings and DO it already ! No one will even notice that “they” weren’t asked and the ones that care will soon have something else to grip about 😂.
LOL- 'paring down' things this year...LOVED the cartoon comment!🤣
Riiiiight!
RED barn! Ducks, rabbits! So many fun options! Goats!
Absolute YES to the wild flowers!!!
Oh I love red barns. Takes me back.
It sounds like you might be really homesick. Is it time to move back to the Treasure Valley? You pretty much mention it in every comment.
Hi . Your guys are just awesome. Best gardening channel on UA-cam. Such a beautiful family. Looking forward to another year of your projects. 👍. Thank you so much for sharing. . ❤
You could tint the salt dough with food coloring as you mixed it up. Think of all the gorgeous pastels and Easter colors you could do.
It's nice that your neighbors was able to sell you the land. you should look to rent their house while you reno your place
Or live in it while the renovate the main house!❤🎉🙌🏻
Skip the horses, add the ducks and a pool! Aaron I totally agree with you! I am sure there are riding barns/lessons near you. It will be far less Hassel!
I love, love, love, red barns! I hope you go in that direction ❤
we had the same thing with our dying tree in the 15' of the city owned area of our front yard. 🤨
I agree with Aaron! Get a pool. The kids will love it and will use it every day. It’s the best investment I have made at my own home.
I'm with Aaron with the pool! When you're hot and sweaty, who wants to go grab everything to go somewhere else to get cooled off. I love having ours.
Me too! I have a dinky pool and when I'm hot sometimes I don't even change I just walk out of the garden and straight in the pool. Instant relief!
I made a hoop for my ivy it turned out awesome. Thanks for the video.
OMG! Laura and Aaron are the high spot of my Sunday mornings. Lots of laughing this Sunday. Laura, a duck sanctuary? Really!? Ha-ha-ha!
I love the red barn!❤
I think it is amazing how U2 complement each other. Laura has the let me create beauty aspect (focused in) and Aaron has the how does it all connect (big picture)
What a great compliment to each other!
You two are adorable together. ❤❤
Wow, saw the announcement for the sprayer and put the video on hold. Went to the store and they were already sold out. Love the recaps
It's on Amazon too and in almost all home improvement stores / online! Not difficult to find elsewhere
I love these recap. They're fun to watch.
Good morning from Maryland. Daffodils are in bloom 😊
My first thought when I saw the red barn was that it is so charming. I vote for keeping it red, but white would make it seem more connected to the rest of the property.❤
