  • Mael is 14 years old and on his way to become another great French rower.
However, he falls for the same trap the majority of rowers fall for: doing too much motion and losing the focus for what truly counts.
In this video I try to explain my thoughts on why this happens, what to improve and how to improve.

Outstanding coaching. The exaggerated finish lean back is not only unproductive, it is way worse! First of all it costs oodles of time, the time expenditure for the lean back probably scales quadratically with the lean back angle. Second of all the time spent either lowers your tempo or increases your recovery sliding speed, which increases average drag of the hull through the water. Next to that higher acceleration and deceleration on the slides burns energy and oxygen in your muscles.
The goal is a “compact” finish, low lean back angle. GREAT coaching!
