loved the episode man. I have one suggestion for the hit camera, maybe if you set a camera closer to the targets that heat wouldnt affect the shot. Paired with an angled housing to protect the camera from being shot.

When people miss or do things you don’t like, take it as a learning moment for yourselves if you wish. But the constant judgement of contestants is not what this series was made for. The "long range shooting community" can be really brutal. I've experienced some of that on a facebook page. It's a lot of dick swinging and posturing with ridiculous comments. All that said... if you're someone who has gotten really good at long range shooting... you have to remember that a lot of these people probably don't shoot that much and their experience level is not anywhere near the "seasoned" level. Most people don't get to shoot out to even 1,000 yards as they don't have those kinds of ranges anywhere near where they live. Try to remember your own learning curve before judging and most importantly... just chill out. If you're still freaking out... make your own videos.

It’s not that complicated. I Started with a different discipline in mind and now I’m wanting to shoot long range. It is what it is and I have the rifle so I have to make the best of it. MDT elite is in my future.
Love the stock Howa 1500, you showed just how well they can do with decent ammo and shooter for maybe a tenth the cost of some of the other rifles. Massive respect mate
Just doing 500 with zero experience past 100 yds and no education on the matter has been a kick in the reality balls for me. Taking shots when you have zero idea what your drops are/should be just ends up with me wasting ammo a lot of the time. Funny enough the easiest shots are with the BDC reticles (3 different scopes with the ACOG style chevron + tree) and at least those are on my 5.56 rifles so it isn't that expensive to just lob 55 grainers down range.
24:45 I don't want to be overly negative but with a flinch that bad he needs to switch to a smaller cartridge. Especially since he needs to re-learn how to shoot prone (no angled prone, offhand on rear bag, work out that flinch). He needs lower rings or an adjustable cheekpiece as well. Every time after he shot he dropped his head down onto the stock where it should have been all along. It sounds critical but he'll enjoy shooting a lot more if he changes things up.
Yeah, when he left the safety on it was pretty evident there’s a serious flinch occurring. And like you said, the ergonomic setup of the rifle is poor for him. He needs a cheek riser and a pretty serious one, and being a taller fella he might even benefit from even taller rings once the shoulder/cheek fitment is addressed. He seems like a good guy and a pretty humble man, I’m guessing he’d be amenable to some ergonomic improvements for his setup. It’s a sweet rifle, but the ergonomic setup is leaving a lot on the table for him. And at the cost of 300 Norma, the penalty for bad ergonomics adds up pretty quickly. 300 Norma throws a lot of heat, I’m wondering if some POI shift due to thermal is at work in his struggle.
I shoot 1000 yards every other weekend. Had to learn to do it with no spotter. Now that I got one to help out, what a difference it makes on the follow ups.
The guy with the 338 would be better served with a stock that actually fits him. He has a non existent cheek weld because the scope rings are too high. He's beating himself up because his custom gun isn't getting it done, but he's missing because of fundamentals.
A .338 Lapua is not a gun for the casual shooter. Back in the late 90’s I was the first shooter to start shooting one in competition in my area. Had been shooting a Winchester Classic Sharpshooter in long range comp up to that point, chambered in .308. Purchased a just released Sako TRG-42 and we were off to the races, or so I thought. The learning curve on that rifle was brutal. You basically had to relearn how to shoot as recoil management was the issue. Besides that, it was just a money pit!
I thought he said it was rebarreled to a 300 Norma. Also a magpul bipod probably isn’t doing him any favors hed be better served with a heavier/nicer bipod
He was nervous. He was shaking at times. When you’re nervous it affects you a lot. Most likely his first time no spotter being filmed for the whole world to criticize. And he also didn’t claim he hunts at 1600 yards he stated a certain bullet is devastating at 1,600 yards which could be boasting or from someone else’s posts on long range hunting forum. Just something to think about.

It's funny how watching these has shown me the amount of money into a rifle isn't the limiting factor. Some of the more expensive rifles in the video in magnum calibers didn't hit the target that a sub $1000 rifle in a smaller caliber did. Willing to spend $10,000 on a rifle but no training I guess.
Sometimes it's frustrating watching people shoot the tiniest group at 1000 yards!!!! And that group is only about one target length to the right of the target.... and he just keeps sending them right in there and going, "awe man"... and the next shot, same hole in the dirt, "Awe darn it"... next shot, same hole in the dirt, "darn..."... all the way home...
This is one of the best series on shooting and fundamentals in action. I’ve shot 1000 meters with an M-4 on normal man sized targets. (Sniper section confidence shooting/messing around) Had more misses than hits. The beauty of this segment that Texas Plinking does is bring in people from all over with differing experiences to challenge their confidence and patience. Love it. Pretty simple. I shake normally and when you add in rockstar energy drink, there you have it. Seemed to still shoot decent so oh well. Pretty nerve wracking as well with everyone watching you.
That fella with the 300 norma mag should get some lower rings and/or make use of what looks like a cheek riser in the stock. His face was hovering over his stock a lot.
I have a Howa 1500 mini action in 6.5 Grendel with an MDT Oryx chassis, but it barely groups sub MOA with a few loads. I've been thinking about re-barreling it a heavy contour Preferred barrel. I didn't know wood made barrels. I have seen their aftermarket stocks and chassis systems though.
I love this series, but man all these people with mags that load one round at a time instead of loading the mag up i feel could be such less of a distraction in between shots
Also, single loading tends to be a bit more accurate, especially if the rifle doesn't feed smoothly. As the bullet hits the feed ramp and is forced up, it can cause the bullet to come slightly out of alignment and not go into the chamber square
@@theangrymarmot8336no, every way you cut it the single-load is dumb. If you chambering the round screws up the cartridge then you have bigger problems. Also, that round is certainly staying cooler in the mag than in the hot chamber. Idiots.
Really appreciated Shane , not just acknowledging the propensity of the expansion due to pressure/ heat component in the barrel and action, but believing it was going to occur. His placing the round in the action and not loading into the chamber until his eyes were adjusted on target as well as time for heat to dissipate from chamber ; he then loaded the round into the chamber taking seconds to engage the shot. Outcome was less frustration and bolt came open each time without additional effort. Congratulations to all shooters and Brandon for having this event. Believing is an action word.
I was nerding out on the exact same thoughts. This to me appears to be a sport where the tiniest of adjustments matter. Balancing the time between letting the chamber cool and getting fast follow up shots as to achieve similar wind holds is something kind of beautiful to see.
@@sstevens7 Shane, having squeezed the trigger on 100’k , built handguns, and rifles; your deliberate concentration and sharing in the beginning was a pivotal moment, for revealing the issue chamber heat/ pressure. Many have experienced wild shots, at the Texas plinking event; as well as acknowledging not really knowing the cause. Your demonstration revealed one of the most prevailing causes, chamber conditions at ignition. We will see how many shooters begin experimenting this condition that alters POI. CHAMBERS HOT ! BARRELS HOT! Long ago in handgun silhouette we placed guns in coolers recorded chamber temperatures , and shot over chronographs. Interesting results! It is I who appreciates your tenacity and precision attitude in action to incite my own thinking and reflection on experiences.
Always amazes me how people will go 10 shots off the right edge grouping in the same spot and not stop to think “maybe I should hold more wind”. Must be the heat of the moment brain fart.
This one always gets me at matches, ive seen guys dig an absolute hole, dumping 20 or even 30rds in the same exact spot. I've seen it be 1 or 2 things or a combo of both. Beep brain (basically having skills/a plan until the timer beeps and all rationale leaves the brain because of nerves) or not spotting misses. If I have 2 shots around the same spot it's time to make drastic changes. Go an extra .25 or .5 more than what I think the correction is. Also sometimes holding low to put one in the dirt can help.
338 LM family cartridges with 25 - 35x magnificacion makes for a narrow field of view. Add a magul bipod and probably not the best or most stable position behind the rifle and the recoil will bounce you off the impact area pretty easily.
Need to see a dude show up with a Mosin-Nagant that has a bipod tied-down with twine and an old horse-hair crosshair scope without markings. Intro: I'm just some random guy with a rifle. Wanna tell us about your weapon? Um, not really, its just a Mosin-Nagant. How do you think you'll do today? No idea. Then proceeds to get a 38.

Yo Shane check and see if your chamber needs polishing. Your bolt didn’t look heavy on the lift and your primary extraction should have been making the withdrawal smoother if it were just pressure signs.
Ok something to look into for sure. Thank you! When it was 20-30 degrees cooler out it didn’t do it at all. Wasn’t nearly as bad in Texas for Brandon’s challenge in comparison to shooting here in Phoenix where it’s north of 110 F, where I had to get off gun at times to get the bolt to unstick. Always lifts no problem, just the pullback sometimes.
@@sstevens7 I had the same issue with a 280 AI barrel, but it ended up being a rough chamber. It emulated pressure signs pretty well, with the high end of the charges causing more friction. In the cold it was a lot less too. It may not be your issue, and I hope it’s not, but just something to look for! 👍
I dont chase the turret after making initial adjustments the ballistic app calls for. This is the case for most shooters that I follow that are really good. I started on shot one holding center and then started holding left, ended up holding 3 MOA left after initial 1.5 MOA was dialed.
As an old guy who had trouble shooting open sights at 200 yards when I was young, I have nothing but respect for those with the courage to try a difficult challenge like this. I think some of the older guys might be veterans. Back in the day, they were taught to be 45 degrees to the axis of the bore. I shot three position small bore in college and used an angled prone position. It took me a long time to get used to being directly behind the rifle. I admire all of these shooters. I’d be lucky to hold 10” groups at 600.
Best show to really capitalize the technical aspect of shooting, and actually showcase the capability of different Cartridges, rifles and shooters. Love every second of it!
That's kinda the idea behind "dope"- once it's actually dialed in, leave it alone. The others not correcting their shots through the turrets are just guessing. But, then again, video games make experts apparently...
4:10 Hate to be that guy Brandon but it's actually 4x smaller! Area of a circle is the constant pi times the radius of the circle SQUARED so a target that is 2x the width will have 2 squared (4) times the surface area. The 10 inch target is roughly 78.5 square inches while the 5 inch target is only about 19.5 square inches. Just want to make sure the shooters get the credit they are due, 10 inches at a thousand is already astonishing but a 5 inch target is exponentially more difficult in the true mathematical sense of that word.
I have an AR-10 .308 that I want to stretch out to 1,000 someday, still working a few kinks out on it so I haven’t shot past 100 with it and I’m getting .75” 5 shot groups with it using M118LR 175gr Sierra match king BTHP’s, having cycling issues I need to work out, trying different weight buffer weights/springs but once I do and get some practice at actual long distances I’d love to go this challenge, I might just build a second upper for it though with a longer barrel as I now have a heavy profile 18”, I’m torn on caliber though, I might make it with a 6.5 CM with a 24” or if I can find maybe a 26” barrel for it.
The 308 will get there. What direction are the rds ejecting? It will help determine if it's over or under gassed. Check the bcg for leaks at the gas key. I had several fail zero bcgs that had the same issue. Also, check the gas block alignment. Just ideas if you haven't done those yet.
Its insane to think these people would spend all that money on a rifle and not get a bubble level. It will save you time and money to make sure you are level and square behind your rifle if trying to shoot as accurately as possible.
@@spearfisherman308 you should always be level before breaking your shot. If you can't be level you should know how far off of level you are and compensate for it with your reticle. Shooting prone off a bag and bipod there is really no excuse.
One more thing i want to add. For the guys who didn't use one, get yourself a bubble level. A cheap one for arond 20 and some high-end electronic for over 150+ . It will help a lot in the long run.

Like the video but as a beginner here, I'm wondering why some shooters didn't adjust the windage even after seeing the POI splashes always fall on left (or right)?
I see this consistently and it drives me nuts. Shooters make 5, 6, 7 round groups in one spot, and yet they don’t seem to make an apparent adjustments.
Not much you can do if the recoil is bouncing you off the target area. High magnificacion is a detriment in this situation, especially with magnum calibers. I'm guessing they were not watching their impacts.
@@malinkifox2011 where do you guys come up with this stuff? With proper NT this should not and will not happen. If you are dealing with this your not running enough NT or you have feed lip issues.
The half-MOA target is 4x as hard to hit. Area is squared. Honestly, everyone hit to the right & rarely adjusted. They should've just aimed at the left target at some point!!! Liberty Hill Stephen wasn't isn't bit on learning. 9/10 shots grouped ~5" right & mainly varied by elevation. lol.
But the Lapua Scenar L have the lead core on the back and tumble on impact...and those 330 atips make potato salad out of game animals at 1640 yards. Wonder what size the animal was and how many shots it took 😂
I like the second guys plan. He would leave the bolt open after putting a round in the magazine actong like he is looking through the optic for "some reason" then would load the rifle. He was leaving time to let air travel through the barrel to help cool it a little. It may or may not have helped but he done pretty good.
Gets light weight rifle for one discipline. Adds weight for another discipline. Now has two rifle styles in one just by adding or removing weights. Sounds pretty smart to me.
@@Sparks00psn not shooting BR so again, light weight set up for hunting and then throw removable weights to assist with tracking shots out to 1000 yards, especially when you don’t have anyone tracing your impacts for you, you kinda need to see where you’re hitting. Heavy gun helping you stay in the glass. But what do I know? I guess I didn’t hit both of the gongs or anything like that.

Old school. Slant position too. Been trained that way when I was younger. He's about my age and belly size. So he's doing better than most. :) and considering his hand is shaking.
1 MOA at 1000 yards is a 10.470" diameter circle. Not that hard with a good rifle. My suppressed AR does 0.5 MOA at 100 yards, so that is 5" at 1000 yards. It's not the rifle, but the person using it. All rifles are accurate.

Most of these guns are legal in other countries so you can get a license and try yourself.

A lot can happen in a 1000yrds. Lots of wind changes, terrain can mess with ballistics with heat, etc etc

It's funny how watching these has shown me the amount of money into a rifle isn't the limiting factor. Some of the more expensive rifles in the video in magnum calibers didn't hit the target that a sub $1000 rifle in a smaller caliber did. Willing to spend $10,000 on a rifle but no training I guess.

Sometimes it's frustrating watching people shoot the tiniest group at 1000 yards!!!! And that group is only about one target length to the right of the target.... and he just keeps sending them right in there and going, "awe man"... and the next shot, same hole in the dirt, "Awe darn it"... next shot, same hole in the dirt, "darn..."... all the way home...
This is one of the best series on shooting and fundamentals in action. I’ve shot 1000 meters with an M-4 on normal man sized targets. (Sniper section confidence shooting/messing around) Had more misses than hits. The beauty of this segment that Texas Plinking does is bring in people from all over with differing experiences to challenge their confidence and patience. Love it. I have a Howa 1500 mini action in 6.5 Grendel with an MDT Oryx chassis, but it barely groups sub MOA with a few loads. I've been thinking about re-barreling it a heavy contour Preferred barrel. I didn't know wood made barrels. I have seen their aftermarket stocks and chassis systems though.
I've been thinking of doing a custom Howa build in 6mm ARC. I've got 2 AR's in 6mm ARC and they're awesome.

I love this series, but man all these people with mags that load one round at a time instead of loading the mag up i feel could be such less of a distraction in between shots
Hand loads don’t fit in mag, too long now
Also, single loading tends to be a bit more accurate, especially if the rifle doesn't feed smoothly. As the bullet hits the feed ramp and is forced up, it can cause the bullet to come slightly out of alignment and not go into the chamber square

@@theangrymarmot8336no, every way you cut it the single-load is dumb. If you chambering the round screws up the cartridge then you have bigger problems. Also, that round is certainly staying cooler in the mag than in the hot chamber. Idiots.

Really appreciated Shane , not just acknowledging the propensity of the expansion due to pressure/ heat component in the barrel and action, but believing it was going to occur. His placing the round in the action and not loading into the chamber until his eyes were adjusted on target as well as time for heat to dissipate from chamber ; he then loaded the round into the chamber taking seconds to engage the shot. Outcome was less frustration and bolt came open each time without additional effort.
Congratulations to all shooters and Brandon for having this event. Believing is an action word.

I was nerding out on the exact same thoughts. This to me appears to be a sport where the tiniest of adjustments matter. Balancing the time between letting the chamber cool and getting fast follow up shots as to achieve similar wind holds is something kind of beautiful to see.

Many have experienced wild shots, at the Texas plinking event; as well as acknowledging not really knowing the cause. Your demonstration revealed one of the most prevailing causes, chamber conditions at ignition. We will see how many shooters begin experimenting this condition that alters POI. CHAMBERS HOT ! BARRELS HOT! Long ago in handgun silhouette we placed guns in coolers recorded chamber temperatures , and shot over chronographs. Interesting results! It is I who appreciates your tenacity and precision attitude in action to incite my own thinking and reflection on experiences.

Always amazes me how people will go 10 shots off the right edge grouping in the same spot and not stop to think “maybe I should hold more wind”. Must be the heat of the moment brain fart.
This one always gets me at matches, ive seen guys dig an absolute hole, dumping 20 or even 30rds in the same exact spot. I've seen it be 1 or 2 things or a combo of both. Beep brain (basically having skills/a plan until the timer beeps and all rationale leaves the brain because of nerves) or not spotting misses. If I have 2 shots around the same spot it's time to make drastic changes. Go an extra .25 or .5 more than what I think the correction is. Also sometimes holding low to put one in the dirt can help.
Right? I think sometimes it is changing winds though. But it may also be some mental deal. I've done similar

338 LM family cartridges with 25 - 35x magnificacion makes for a narrow field of view. Add a magul bipod and probably not the best or most stable position behind the rifle and the recoil will bounce you off the impact area pretty easily.

Yo Shane check and see if your chamber needs polishing. Your bolt didn’t look heavy on the lift and your primary extraction should have been making the withdrawal smoother if it were just pressure signs.
Ok something to look into for sure. Thank you! When it was 20-30 degrees cooler out it didn’t do it at all. Wasn’t nearly as bad in Texas for Brandon’s challenge in comparison to shooting here in Phoenix where it’s north of 110 F, where I had to get off gun at times to get the bolt to unstick. Always lifts no problem, just the pullback sometimes.
@@sstevens7 I had the same issue with a 280 AI barrel, but it ended up being a rough chamber. It emulated pressure signs pretty well, with the high end of the charges causing more friction. In the cold it was a lot less too. It may not be your issue, and I hope it’s not, but just something to look for! 👍

I dont chase the turret after making initial adjustments the ballistic app calls for. This is the case for most shooters that I follow that are really good. I started on shot one holding center and then started holding left, ended up holding 3 MOA left after initial 1.5 MOA was dialed.
As an old guy who had trouble shooting open sights at 200 yards when I was young, I have nothing but respect for those with the courage to try a difficult challenge like this. Much respect to all involved. I always root for everyone giving this challenge a try. I want everyone to do well. Thanks, Brandon.

I think some of the older guys might be veterans. Back in the day, they were taught to be 45 degrees to the axis of the bore. I shot three position small bore in college and used an angled prone position. It took me a long time to get used to being directly behind the rifle. I admire all of these shooters. I’d be lucky to hold 10” groups at 600.
Best show to really capitalize the technical aspect of shooting, and actually showcase the capability of different Cartridges, rifles and shooters. Love every second of it!

First guy was a natural marksman. He didn't go crankin on the scope once he had his dope. Barrel heated up on him after 5 shots .
That's kinda the idea behind "dope"- once it's actually dialed in, leave it alone.

4:10 Hate to be that guy Brandon but it's actually 4x smaller! Area of a circle is the constant pi times the radius of the circle SQUARED so a target that is 2x the width will have 2 squared (4) times the surface area. The 10 inch target is roughly 78.5 square inches while the 5 inch target is only about 19.5 square inches. Just want to make sure the shooters get the credit they are due, 10 inches at a thousand is already astonishing but a 5 inch target is exponentially more difficult in the true mathematical sense of that word.

I have an AR-10 .308 that I want to stretch out to 1,000 someday, still working a few kinks out on it so I haven’t shot past 100 with it and I’m getting .75” 5 shot groups with it using M118LR 175gr Sierra match king BTHP’s, having cycling issues I need to work out, trying different weight buffer weights/springs but once I do and get some practice at actual long distances I’d love to go this challenge, I might just build a second upper for it though with a longer barrel as I now have a heavy profile 18”, I’m torn on caliber though, I might make it with a 6.5 CM with a 24” or if I can find maybe a 26” barrel for it.
The 308 will get there. What direction are the rds ejecting? It will help determine if it's over or under gassed. Check the bcg for leaks at the gas key. I had several fail zero bcgs that had the same issue. Also, check the gas block alignment. Just ideas if you haven't done those yet.

Its insane to think these people would spend all that money on a rifle and not get a bubble level. It will save you time and money to make sure you are level and square behind your rifle if trying to shoot as accurately as possible.
Depending on conditions you will not be level.
@@spearfisherman308 you should always be level before breaking your shot. If you can't be level you should know how far off of level you are and compensate for it with your reticle. Shooting prone off a bag and bipod there is really no excuse.

It’s best to not chase the turret but rather make hold over adjustments
The hash marks on the scope crosshair make it easier and quicker to just hold where you want to hit

I see this consistently and it drives me nuts. Shooters make 5, 6, 7 round groups in one spot, and yet they don’t seem to make an apparent adjustments.
Not much you can do if the recoil is bouncing you off the target area. High magnificacion is a detriment in this situation, especially with magnum calibers. I'm guessing they were not watching their impacts.

Loading from magazine rides the feed ramp hard and seats the bullet deeper into casing which negatively affects accuracy
@@malinkifox2011 where do you guys come up with this stuff? With proper NT this should not and will not happen. If you are dealing with this your not running enough NT or you have feed lip issues.

I like the second guys plan. He would leave the bolt open after putting a round in the magazine actong like he is looking through the optic for "some reason" then would load the rifle. He was leaving time to let air travel through the barrel to help cool it a little. It may or may not have helped but he done pretty good.

Gets light weight rifle for one discipline. Adds weight for another discipline. Now has two rifle styles in one just by adding or removing weights. Sounds pretty smart to me.

1 MOA at 1000 yards is a 10.470" diameter circle. Not that hard with a good rifle.
My suppressed AR does 0.5 MOA at 100 yards, so that is 5" at 1000 yards.
