    I found your site by accident while looking for laptops, and I'm glad I found the site. After watching this video on the HP Envy 17t, I went to the HP website where they had a Envy 17t, with a 4K screen, a Intel core i7-8550u, and the Nvidia Gforce MX150 graphics card, 16 GB Ram, 1TB Nvmd SSD memory for $1499.99. I ordered it yesterday. Should be here in 2-3 weeks. Hope it's a good one. Love your videos. Glad I came across the site.....

      Hi Steve,
      We're the best kept secret around! Glad you found us! Thank you for your comments. We're here to help! Let us know what you think of it when you get up and running. Kim bought this same configuration recently. We're still waiting to here back from her. She should have received delivery by now. We all can learn from each other by our shared experiences.
      In the mean time, you bought everything right. The only thing that might give you grief, at first, is the 4K Display. Just lower the default screen resolution to 1080. Windows does not yet work well with 4K. The Windows interface is a bitmap (raster) and instead should render as vector meaning scaleable which it is not as of yet. Microsoft needs to work on that - big time. Otherwise, you're good to go! Thanks for Subscribing! We appreciate your support of our efforts! Now with what you've learned, you can help someone else learn too! Enjoy!

      Hi Steve.
      I too bought this model. I installed core temp to monitor temp. I found sometimes temperature reaches 90c and comes back to normal 40c plus is it normal.
      While viewing 4k videos temperature is increasing to 60c.
      Please let me know what is the ideal temp of this model and what is the temp it reaches while streaming 4k videos

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  6 років тому

      Hi sur90gan,
      Do you remember the processes you were running when the temp hit 90c? That must have been running all 4 cores & 8 threads. Video Rendering? Did you install and run Desktop Gadgets? That's an easy way to visually watch the Cores & Threads other than using Task Manager which is rather bland visually. Glad you've asked this important question!

A Battery power pack, do you have weight constraints? Are You OK with say, 30 lbs of battery to go Solar? Chainable for More Battery Capacity. Also more weight. I'd say look into the GOAL ZERO Yeti 400 Solar Generator Power Pack from B&H - www.bhphotovideo.com/. Would give you the link, but UA-cam might truncate. Hope this helps. Thanks for Watching! new england patriot,
      Appreciate your comments! Glad to hear, it's a keeper! 4lbs would be nice but, smaller screen, remove DVD Burner, less battery... Hmm... 6 lbs is OK considering what we get. Even the ASUS ASUS ROG GL703VM Gaming Laptop is 6 lbs. And the ASUS ROG STRIX AMD Gaming Laptop, Ryzen 7 1700 is 7.1 lbs. This is a good balance of features, power and weight. Worthy of a DigiPlate!
      BTW: Keep your HP Bios & Drivers updated using HP app.

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  6 років тому

      One easy way to know what Build Version of Windows your have - In Windows 10, Version 1709: Right click on Desktop. Choose, Display Settings. On left side, scroll down to About. Click About. On right side see Device specifications & Windows specifications. Under Windows specifications, notice Edition, Version & OS Build. Version should state either 1703 or 1709. This is the most complete of Information without running through hoops or downloading anything to tell us. Keep it Simple!
      Belarc Advisor FREE will also give us this information. goo.gl/NBCw33
      Toshiba was great. We use to recommend those. So was Sony. Sony was expensive though. Now our top two are HP & ASUS - IMO.
      The Box will only tell us Brand, Model & Serial Number which are all helpful and good to know too! Hope this helps! Appreciate your comments! Thanks for Watching!

      Hi Brice Tenkeu,
      Thanks for your Comments! This is an excellent Laptop for the price for everyday work. Price ranges from $800.00 to $1220.00 (HP direct - on sale) decked out with NVMe M.2 SSD. However, this is only 4 Cores, 8 Threads. Has 4GB NVIDIA GeForce MX150 Graphics. You want more CPU + GPU muscle. Think about 6 Cores, 12 Threads. Look for a Laptop with i7-8750H. And a dedicated GPU of 4GB NVidia 1050 TI minimum. If you stick with HP, it's going to cost more. Checkout the HP ZBook x2 17 inch. That's an expensive Laptop, IMO.
      Something more affordable, with great specs, would be either Asus or MSI. ASUS GL703GE-IS74 from Costco for 1,299.99! With 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti Graphics. The model above this would be ASUS GL703GM from B&H for $1,599.00. The ASUS from Costco is Bang for the Buck. NVMe M.2 SSD needs upgrading on both. That can be done later. The model from B&H has better dedicated video of 6GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. If you're concerned about the Cinebench score, get the model from B&H, when it ships. GPUs cannot be changed!

    • @BuildOrBuy

      Hi Enzo,
      Great idea! You can accommodate a second drive. However, you'll need to purchase an Install Kit which includes a Mounting Bracket & SATA Connector. Easier and less expensive to just have one drive. Remove HDD, replace with SSD. Besides, you'll want the new SSD to be the Boot Drive. Good time to do a clean Install anyway! Hope this helps! Thanks for Asking & Thanks for Watching!

    I looking. For a new graphics card to replace my current Radeon. 530 4gb gddr5( it is not integrated) so what I am asking what what would work best for my Adobe software
    I also have a integrated uhd620

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  5 років тому

      Hi Michael,
      For a Laptop - The Radeon 530 is a Laptop GPU. Not chip replaceable. Neither is the CPU. Replacing either of those components requires replacing the Motherboard.
      www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Radeon+530&id=3818
      helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-cc-gpu-card-faq.html
      www.amd.com/en-us/solutions/software-partners/adobe/solutions/hardware-accelerated
      If it were replaceable, anything would be better than Radeon 530 although on par with Intel 620 which is the Video GPU on the HP Envy 17t in this Video.
      Radeon 530 - Intel 620 - PassMark - Video Card Performance Comparison
      www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare/Intel-HD-Graphics-620-vs-Radeon-520/3592vs3797
      Adobe will take all the Resources you can throw at it. Adobe recommends NVIDIA.
      Do you enable your Adobe products to utilize the Radeon 530? Do you Color Match your Display? You're Color Matching to the connected display. The connected display is connected to the GPU. That would be the Intel 620. Unless there's a setting, in the Bios, and there is not, to change the default active GPU, you'll Color Match your Display to your Intel 620 and not the Radeon 530. Bummer! This will be true with any Laptop containing two GPUs no matter how great GPU two could be!
      The 4 Core HP Envy 17t is a great Laptop for regular work but is lacking in performance components for higher end resource intensive work. Hope that helps!

      only upgrade was only an extra $20
      - Office Software Trial
      - Windows 10 Home 64
      I'm not big into gaming. Just some of the facebook games and stuff I got
      from Microsoft. None of the 3rd person shooting games.
      The Lenovo replaced my Sony Vaio E. I loved it but the fan stopped working
      and fried the motherboard (or so I was told) My dad bought it and the
      Lenovo. Money was an issue the 2nd time around. The Sony was about $800
      the Lenovo half that.
      The 2nd day after getting the Levono I had to call tech support because I
      was stuck on the blue screen of death for hours. I was forced to do a hard
      reboot. At that point, I should have returned it. I was hoping it was a
      one-time thing but it wasn't.
      The problem with the Lenovo was freezing up when I had too many
      apps/programs running. I use my laptop for over 12hrs a day, 7 days a
      week. I use Spotify for my music. I read fanfiction on my browser (google
      chrome) Then I have a program for my fan fiction stories and e-books. All
      those things are always running.
      My final straw was when I had to reboot. (meaning holding the power button
      down until everything is shut off.) I know it's not good on the machine.
      There are days when I have to do it 5 times a day.
      Sorry, anyway after rebooting I lost my calibre library. I had over 25,000
      stories/books. I set up my prefences again (takes a couple of hours)
      started loading books again. About 2,000. Guess what, the dumb thing
      froze up again. I lost it all again.
      Now I have always backup everything. I have an external hard drive that is
      3T. So I'm sure I have everything saved. I'm by no means on your level of
      knowledge on this stuff. The person that wrote the program said there is a
      way to recover it but I couldn't figure it out. Then for it to be blank
      again. It was it. Also, the constant freezing up was driving me mad.
      Remember my Sony never did this. The Levono also gets very hot, on the top
      as well as underneath. Well I'm off to watch more UA-cam. Including
      check out your channel.
      I'm sure I gave you much more info then you needed. But your video
      definitely helped in my decision. I was set on HP. I wasn't interested in
      a 2-1 or 360, or gaming machine. I do a lot of word processing. I write
      and edit fanfiction.
      I can't wait to get my new machine. I will let you know after having it a
      while how I feel. Keep up the good work. It does help.

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  6 років тому

      Hi Kim,
      Congrats! $1220.00 - Wow! Amazing Value! Well worth it! You've Spec'ed everything right from NVMe M.2 to Intel Wireless! You know your Specs! You now have a wealth of knowledge. The only downside to 4k screens - No using clonezilla. It's linux based cloning. To see clonezilla, on screen, you'd need a lower resolution and there's no way to easily change resolution. Too bad Sony quit making Laptops. You're the 2nd person to tell me they miss their Sony Vaio. Nearly all Laptops have Fans. The Lenova should have shutdown before hand but, it is what is is. The Acer Nitro is notorious for heat too. The problems you've outlined with the Lenova should not happen with this HP Laptop. That Lenova sounds like it did not have enough muscle under the hood - Not enough Ram etc. Like maybe 8 GB of RAM? And maybe 2 Cores instead of 4 Cores. Ugh! I'm sure your Dad thought, the Lenova was better than nothing. That's why it's important to know your Specs!
      Music - Music Videos on UA-cam - Yes! When Music Videos started we were watching them on Yahoo, in low resolution. That's been a while. Now we see them in HD or better! Ever try Amazon Prime for Streaming Music? Spotify is Free, with Ads. Understandable.
      If you have access to a large screen HDTV, connect the Laptop and see and hear everything from there. An amazing experience! Can't comment on fanfiction. Not my field of expertise. Sounds like that Lenova is about to become a Frisbee! BSODs are very frustrating. Especially when unsolvable. Your new HP Laptop, due to also having a Fan, will need to breath. Suggest blowing it out with compressed air every 3 to 4 months for safety to keep the air ports clean.

    I know Seagate " acquired" WD for16 billion back in 2014 and now the company is called seawest but they manufacture them both separately so I'm asking is which is better Seagate or Western Digital external hard drives because I am looking for a 4 terabyte external hard drive

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  6 років тому

      Hi Michael,
      Great Question! The Unfortunate truth regarding Seagate owning almost everyone now - Maxtor, WDC - That's a real bummer! We knew good people at both companies! However, with that said, my personal preference: WDC - Both Internal & External. Also look closely at where you'd buy from and their return policy - Costco - Seagate. What I don't like about most external drives is the connectivity - USB 3.0. On a 4 TB HDD that's slow as Christmas! Tried one at Costco - Seagate, took it back only due to interface. Yes SATA III is 6GBps & USB 3.0 runs at up to 5Gbps but the overhead really seems to hamper throughput. Connecting a SATA drive (direct SATA) vs a USB 3.0 drive, throughput difference to me, is noticable. Tried it with a clone procedure using Macrium Reflect. Yuck! Anyway, Backblaze keeps excellent stats on hard drive failures for their Data Centers.
      Costco has a Seagate Backup Plus 5TB Portable Hard Drive for $119.99 delivered. Another Vendor worth looking at would be B&H - WDC. B&H does an outstanding job of wrapping drives and other sensitive gear for shipping. Thanks for Asking! Hope this helps!

    i bouth this model like 2 years ago the HP ENVY 17t 16gb ram, 1tb windows 8.1 and touchscreen and my only issue is the battery life, how is yours BuildOrBuy? because mine is about 1 and half hour unplug, do you know a way to improve it?

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  6 років тому +1

      Hi extremeXization,
      Two years running - Did your battery always perform at that level or did this just start happening? You should be getting at least 4 hours on a charge even with the Touchscreen.
      This is a process of elimination.
      Run a Battery Report with BatteryInfoView - www.nirsoft.net/utils/battery_information_view.html
      3 items to confirm...
      A.) Actual battery usage - Full Charge.
      B.) Battery Specs - Battery Life = Watt Hours / ( Voltage x Current in Ampere).
      Battery Life Calculator from Watt Hour - referencedesigner.com/cal/battery_life_watt_hour_56.php
      C.) Battery Charger Test - Voltage & Amps! Voltage could be OK but Amps might be dismal.
      If you're getting a Full charge & the AC Power Adapter seems OK (enough amps), then from the simple, we can move to the more complex.
      1.) Default Power settings, optimized for power saving features. 2.) Use default (Intel) video adapter instead of NVidia. 3.) Change HD to SSD. Mechanical Drives require more power than SSDs. You'll speed up performance too!
      Keep in mind... Replacing a Battery Charger is easy and inexpensive. Replacing a Battery is more involved & more expensive. Having a spare Battery Charger - AC Power Adapter is always a good idea! Hope this helps. Let us know what works best and which option you pursue. Thanks for Watching & Thanks for Subscribing!

      Hi Michael, Good to hear from you! None of the HP Envy 17t's use AMD Video. Only Intel HD Graphics. They ALL have NVIDIA GeForce MX150 GPUs that I'm aware of, for high end GPUs. Now that HP has replaced your Motherboard, what's wrong with your video? Intel HD Graphics is shared memory. Whereas NVIDIA GeForce MX150 GPUs have dedicated memory. Sounds like you have a lemon. And that's a bummer! Have you told HP the Laptop is still is not right?

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  5 років тому

      Hi Martin,
      As we're all finding out, depends upon what version you have. HP creates a different iteration of this Laptop for every market. This version Reviewed from Costco, Unfortunately no! And No M.2 anything since the M.2 connector is missing! And no extra HDD nor SSD unless removing the DVD is acceptable. The other one from Costco that's more expensive and has everything installed - Yes!
      Specific to Your Question, according to the specs of HP ENVY Laptop 17-bw0xxx - Yes! The only way to know for certain, is to look inside. Based on experience, if the technology is there when purchased, yes for Upgrades in Capacity. In other words, the HDD can be swapped out for an SSD since the connector is present. For starters, suggest running Belarc Advisor Free version to determine what you have then You'll have a better understanding of what You can do! Great Question! Not an easy answer. Thanks for Watching!

      Hi Michael,
      Purchased from Costco, March 2018 and now this bad HDD in July 2018! Past the 90 Day Return Policy. Remember - 2nd Year Warranty - Costco extends the manufacturer's warranty on Computers! You have 2 options... For warranty service, contact Costco Concierge Services at TOLL-FREE 1-866-861-0450 or take this opportunity and Upgrade your HDD to an SSD! This model does not have an M.2 therefor changing from a HDD to a standard SSD is an excellent option. When Calling Costco Concierge, ask and see what's possible through them then decide what you want to do!

    will the Firecuda work with or against the 970 evo

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  6 років тому

      Hi Michael,
      Against. Talking about technology in general vs technology for a specific purpose by changing one thing, changes everything... As a Rule - Stay away from a Hybrid Hard Drive. Hybrid Hard Drives work against what they're suppose to help, over time. Especially in slower Computers like something with APU (CPU+GPU). The SSHD becomes sluggish and will appear to lockup when it's trying to catch-up.
      Your best performace solution is to go with NVMe (Bigger is better) + a regular HD like the Seagate Barracuda, WD Black or WD Gold. A partial question to start, a complete answer to finish. Yes, you need 2.5 inch Form Factor for internal.
      Is this for your new Laptop? Keep it Simple - 1 Hard Drive - NVMe - In a Laptop unless you're comfortable with using and configuring the use of 2 or more Hard Drives internally. Lots of Drives in a Desktop vs 1 Hard Drive in a Laptop. You'll lower battery life with a spinning Hard Drive in a Laptop. And what about a removable drive? Then you're no longer restricted by the Form Factor of 2.5 inches. Hope this helps! Want to make certain we get you where you want to go - Bang for the Buck! Great Question!

      The current HP Envy 17t only has an Intel i7-8550U CPU - 4 Cores, 8 Threads. This model is NOT avalaible from HP with an i9. To get an i9 Laptop, you'll be looking at a different brand. Here's a good article detailing i9 Laptops - www.ultrabookreview.com/20056-core-i9-portable-laptops/
      Bang for the buck would be an i7-8750H - 6 Cores, 12 Threads.

    What is the best raid to go with

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  5 років тому

      Hi Michael,
      It's been a while! Happy New Year! Can You be more specific? We're going to have to do a Video on RAID. This topic keeps coming up. Until then, from the perspective of this HP Laptop, You'll want USB-C connectivity and maybe Network. Most everything we're seeing right now is Thunderbolt 3. And we're working to get Thunderbolt 3 functional on a Desktop. Don't know it till you try it!
      Anything Software can do, Hardware can do better. With that said, let's take a stab at Your question... And seems everyone has an opinion of RAID, whether they've tried it or not.
      There's Hardware RAID, Software Software and Bios RAID which some consider to be a fake RAID. And for those who think an external RAID is better than an internal RAID, either one can fail! Real RAID should offer 1/0/10 and then RAID 5. Software Software can be either done by the O/S or an application. Hardware RAID requires a Controller card installed with Disks attached. And this market is undergoing some wild changes right now. Like LSI or Adaptec.
      All External RAIDs are a PC that do only one thing, RAID. And they may either use a Bios Switch or Application Software which loads to configure the RAID array.
      My personal experience with RAID goes back many years, when Promise Technology had a Motherboard, made by Gigabyte which had PATA RAID on Board. It was great! Loved it! And we have not done RAID since then. There was no point. Until now. So, taking that knowledge into consideration, I can tell You products worth looking at but don't know personally how they perform or stack up. We are going to be doing a Video on NVMe RAID, in the near future on the X399 Chipset & Threadripper II by enabling PCIe Bifurcation. NVMe RAID will be the best Bang for the Buck!
      Back to Your Question, what RAID solutions, Capacity and Price range are You considering? Suggest looking at B&H. I would look seriously at Glyph Technologies Atom RAID 4TB USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C External SSD - Hardware RAID 0 (smaller device and faster) or G-Technology G-RAID with Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C - Hardware RAID 0 (performance), RAID 1 (mirroring), or JBOD (larger device). Again, not having personally tried them, they look good on paper. Hope that helps!

    Hi. Do you know the maH of the battery on this model? My battery seems to not last very long. And my display also seems not too bright even on its brightest. Do you have this issue as well? And does the USB C port charge the laptop? Thank you.

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  6 років тому

      Hi Noah Morris!
      Good Questions!
      1.) Battery - Short Answer - maH : 61.89 Wh & 13.14 volts = 4710 mAh. Formula is (Wh)*1000/(V) =(mAh). If my math is correct.
      Long answer... How to get all that - BatteryInfoView - www.nirsoft.net/utils/battery_information_view.html - Handy little app! Made me work for that one - Thanks!
      2.) This Display is 300 nits - Meaning? Not very bright. I agree. 1 Click from full on. I'd like to be able to make it brighter. However, if we could, I'd turn it down to what it is - Dim. So, there you go. Brighter Display - Would need to be 500 nits. Vendors make us dig for this stuff.
      3.) "Does the USB C port charge the laptop" - Short Answer, Unfortunately No. We can charge Devices but not the Laptop. Another Technology that's a 'Work in Progress!' And only adds to the confusion!
      To help everyone else, even with all of these shortfalls, for $800.00 - This Laptop is still Bang for the Buck - IMO from Costco!
      Example - To purchase this HP Envy 17t direct from HP, will all the fixins', would be $1,620.00. Ouch! NOT Bang for the Buck! If $1,600.00 were the Target, ASUS ROG Strix Ryzen would be the direction! But that too has shortcomings. There are always trade offs.
      Change one thing, changes everything! Thanks for Watching & Thanks for Asking! You made me think a little harder and that's a good thing! Hope this helps!

      Hi Tony,
      We talked about your Questions Wed during BuildOrBuy Live. Very helpful for our Discussion. Your Questions will help us to make better videos on our Laptop Quest. Changing one thing, changes everything!
      First... This is NOT a high end display but it does the job nicely - IMO.
      Second... The Specs -
      HWinfo = Monitor Name: AU Optronics B173HW01 V0
      Having having researched Monitor Asset Manager, Nirsoft's MonitorInfoView & HWinfo for this data, HWinfo does the best! Thanks!
      Third... Now as to watching movies... We have a screen tear example from a few years back to observe anomalies that we like to start with. No screen tear on this display. The 1080 Video capture contains Camera Crane movements of Musicians.
      Fourth... Personally, I'd like to be able to turn up the brightness, alas, we're 1 click from full on. The display would be likened unto movie mode on a big screen LCD. A Colorimeter would help to create a profile, however, knowing the Display Brand & Model, it would be cheaper to purchase the profiles online - A Color Monkey or Spyder vs $10.00.
      Fifth... Any Computer we use for Videos & Movies we always connect through HDMI to a larger Display whether Monitor or TV. Still, the primary display should do the job and this display does the job.
      The only hiccups, right now, are the spinning HDD for local video. Streaming is good. Thanks for asking! Hope this helps!

      Hi Michael,
      Good Question! Not as well as a Radeon 580! Performance? Not ideal. Specs... 1280x1080 display + OpenGL + NVIDIA GPU is recommended but not required. After Effects would benefit from more CPU Cores as well as an NVidia GPU. Not even the NVIDIA GPU HP offers in this HP Envy 17t would be ideal. With that said, don't expect much but give it a try and see what you think. Anything Adobe makes will take all the resources you can throw at it! Hi pamma don,
      Great Question and Tough Question yet Important! The Acer Predator Helios has better Specs period. My only concern with Acer Predator Helios is heat and their Tech Support is lacking. We have not personally tested the Acer Predator Helios for those reasons. Both Laptops are now older technologies. To properly know srgb and Argb, we'd have to use a (Colorimeter or Spectrometer) ColorMunki or Spyder + DisplayCAL (sourceforge.net/projects/dispcalgui/) to test and verify. Have not used our Spyder in ages. If either were 4K or HDR or used for Tethered Photography or Video Editing, that would make sense.
      The HP Envy 17t has a much better Color Gamut according to laptopmag.com - 111 percent on 1080 Screen and 209 percent on 4k Screen. But the Acer Predator Helios has a better overall rating from same source.
      www.laptopmag.com/benchmarks/color-gamut
      For watching movies and all around computing - HP, for the money. We're working on 3 other Laptop videos right now considering the technologies - 6 Cores / 12 Threads! Hope this helps. Please let us know which Laptop you Purchase. Thanks for Asking & Thanks for Watching! You are helping Us make better Videos!
      For everyone else... The Color Gamut...
      For sRGB (standard Red Green Blue) is an RGB color space that HP and Microsoft created cooperatively in 1996 to use on monitors, printers, and the Internet. sRGB is currently the defacto color space. Adobe aka ARGB - Adobe color space. Great description for others who are interested... kenrockwell.com/tech/adobe-rgb.htm

      what do u think about 144hz, ips panel which it is offering in omen 17, is it better choice then 4k screen in 17 '.
      please suggest

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  6 років тому

      Hi pamma don,
      Excellent Questions... Let's first look at the broader aspect of the Technologies in question. There are always tradeoffs. It's all about resource allocation. 4K, Feature or Benefit? Do you need 4k or do you just want 4k for bragging rights. If you're watching 4K movies, on a Laptop, with the Laptop 4k screen, OK. If not, why pay for something you're not using? If they give it to you, great! If you're paying extra for it, think about it categorically & logically. 4K is best observed on a larger Screen, 65 inch and above. Even 1080 resolution looks better on a 65 inch screen. If you're connecting your Laptop to a larger external monitor or TV, then same question applies - 4k, Feature or Benefit? Have you seen Windows 10 on a 4k Desktop? That right now, is a problem in Windows 10.
      The Windows interface is currently a bitmap interface, raster based. For higher resolution, the Windows interface needs to become vector based, scalable accoring to resolution. Some elements of Windows currently do not scale well on a 4k monitor. And that's a problem.
      A Screen with a higher resolution should theoretically by of higher quaility, brighter, etc. Same could be said for a Screen with a higher refresh rate too. A 4k screen will have a 4k default resolution. Yes, the default can be changed.
      The HP Omen 17 can be found in many more higher Spec configurations than the HP Envy. The display for example. Are you going to be playing games? Supposedly the higher refesh rate will help eleminate screen tear. We have found, in desktops, a better graphics chip helps eliminate screen tear. The GPU needs to throttle accordingly to avoid screen tear. Your results may vary.
      Let's look at this another way - The HP Omen 17 has better specs than the HP Envy 17. But at what cost. Weigh each Item as a Feature or Benefit. List your Objectives. Watching movies vs Content Creation - Editing Video & Editing Audio; Photography etc.
      Not if, but when you connect to an external monitor, what's the refresh rate of said monitor? Otherwise, 144hz, ips panel for $30.00 more is a better deal than 4k screen in 17 at $280.00 more. And still both of these (HP Omen & HP Envy) are 4 core / 8 thread Laptops. Feature or Benefit... Options! The HP Omen has better options and better overall Specs. The HP Envy is a Bang for the Buck Laptop whether fully configured or stripped down! Either way, right now, stick with HP over Acer. Hope this helps. Thanks for Asking!

      Hi Michael,
      For Video - 1.) Dedicated GPU Memory, not shared. 2.) And more Memory the better! Notice Higher end GPUs always have more Memory whether in a Laptop or Desktop. Now how far to go in a Laptop GPU - A Balance of Price & Performance. An NVidia 1050TI, minimum. 4GB or above. Not what we see in this HP Envy 17t. An NVidia 1070, 6GB is a good place to be. Whereas an NVidia 1080, 8GB may be a bit over priced. I look at a Laptop GPU from a Rendering Performance perspective. Depends upon what you want to do with it. Your needs may be different. The HP Envy 17t is a good balance of price, power and performance for doing regular work but not for Rendering. Hope this helps - Thanks for Asking!

    Hello Gill, I bought this Laptop a week ago in Costco, and the laptop show me a problem in the first setup, do not doing updates. My laptop makes a loud noise too.
    Can the computer have a problem? or is it normal for HP computers to make a loud noise?

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  6 років тому

      Hi Fernando,
      The Loud noise - Not normal - all the time! It may kick in to overdrive if Rendering Video or any other CPU intensive task. But not normal to be noisy all the time. We set the Power Profile, On Power, to keep the PC running all the time and the Display to tun Off at 2 hours. That way, Updates can install and complete otherwise Updates, will not install thinking the PC is powered down. Microsoft should automatically adjust the Power Profile, when Updates are installing.
      Since you bough the Laptop from Costco, take it back and start over! Should be whisper quiet under normal load. Costco is great about returns, in store and online. Order another one!
      From Memory... The Windows 10 1709 Update - Check For Updates... Click Install Updates, Now! Should have Captured that Screen but alas did not. That Update, on this Laptop, had to be initiated by User. It was sitting there waiting for a User Response to start the process.
      Thanks for your question. Hope this helps. Let us know how this progresses. It will help others to know and to make a purchasing decision. Hi DavidHaolai,
      Excellent Question! For Music, this HP has 4 Cores / 8 Threads (Intel i7 8550 CPU). Have you considered looking at more Cores - 6 Cores / 12 Threads (Intel i7 8750 CPU)?
      If you stay with this HP model, get the version with NVMe connector. When you start loading Virtual Instruments - NI Kontakt or IK Multimedia, you'll be glad you did! The HP Envy 17t in this video did not have NVMe. Adding the Touchscreen would definitely come in handy!
      Also, what Audio Interface are you going to use? Suggest Focusrite USB. Stay away from the USB powered bus interface and step up to one with a wall wart to minimize connectivity issues. With Focusrite - Only get a version 2 interface. Stay away from their version 1 units on sale. Focusrite USB version 1 units will crash NI Kontakt and that's a real bummer!
      Thanks for Watching! Appreciate Your Comments! Hope this helps!

      Yes, You've read what we've read and suspected. Had interrogated this Laptop with Crucial Scanner but questioned the Results, which you've confirmed. Even though an HP Envy 17t CAN have an M.2 NVME, those purchased from Costco cannot. And that's a Bummer but not a deal killer. For $800.00, the HP Envy 17t from Costco is still Bang for the Buck! But change the Price, and that changes everything! Thanks for pointing out these important details.
      Have you priced an HP Envy 17t direct from HP, custom configured for a 512GB M.2 NVMe SSD? Pricey! If we pay more, we expect more, not just more of the same. No way to know what we're getting until we can really evaluate it first hand. Hope this helps other Laptop Users to make a better, more informed Buying Decision! Thanks!

      Hi Michael,
      Good Question! You're fortunate to have an M.2 socket! IF your HP Laptop can support the NVMe, then that's the way to go!
      - Samsung SSD 860 EVO M.2 SATA 500GB = $ 124.99 - 550MB/s Seq. Read & 520MB/s Seq. Write
      - Samsung SSD 970 EVO NVMe M.2 500GB = $ 179.99 - 3,400MB/s Seq. Read & 2,300MB/s Seq. Write
