Honestly, One Piece will likely still be generally seen as king bc tbh, running consistently for 20+ years with pretty consistent quality is absolutely no easy task.
From a sales perspective it’s hard to see it being topped overall. It lost the battle of 2019/2020 but is winning the war. It will most likely amass 500m soon

Demon Slayer is the embodiement of "exception to the rule"; people keep comparing JJK and CSM to it but truth being told we probably will not see such a meteoric rise like this in the whole 2020s.
Chainsaw Man has admittedly been a fresh breath of air in the Shonen Jump landscape. It's one of the more "adult-taste" Shonen Jump titles in recent memory and didn't seem to shy away at all from making bold decisions in terms of both narrative and art.
@@Ethan-rl5kv If it's published in Shonen Jump then it's a Shonen. Shonen and Seinen as well as Kodomo and Shojo are just targets of population in which the manga is directed, granted everyone can read anything and this is often the case. Just because a particular series is dark and gritty or reaches "adult themes" it doesn't automatically become a Seinen, like damn Devilman got published in the 80 with extreme gore and it's a Shonen. Sorry for mistakes, english is not my first languagr
Eh. Just cause theres gore and whatnot I wouldnt exactly consider it "adult taste". If anything, Denji as a protagonist is more relatable to 13 year olds than any that came before him lol.
When one piece Is finished Oda will announce that he will give all the money he made from one piece to the next best pirate manga. And that’s how the great pirate era of shonen jump will start.
I do think that when One Piece ends Oda will semi-retire from manga. He's in his mid 40's but he's been writing One Piece throughout his childhood and teenage years. So this is his life's work which is why he's been able to make it every week for over 2 decades without suffering burnout. But once it's over I don't think he'll make anything major. Financially he's set for life and his name is already immortal as one of the greatest mangaka's of all time. I think he will do occasional one-shots or short stories from time to time when inspiration hits him. But nothing more.
It's hard to describe just how SPECIAL of an ending Haikyuu had. It's the kind of thing every writer wishes they could pull off or have the balls to even attempt. It's so satisfying w/o feeling wishywashy, but it's so bold that it pushes the rest of series into even spiritual territory. Not to mention Furudate's art seemed to only get BETTER as time went on? They definitely have ice in their veins
Maaan the ending arc as a whole was beautiful. All of it made so much sense and it was soooo enjoyable reading each page of this era in the characters life.
I think Yahtzee's tactic of just doubling down on saying something the "wrong" way is probably the way to go Edit: HunterksHunter is a personal favorite of mine

Glad to hear there are stories actually ENDING however. Feels like for a while Japanese authors and publishers had no idea how to bring series to a close so they just dragged on and on.

I call this the "Naruto Effect", mas many young authors have been influenced by Naruto growing up. The main issues are many new authors lack the talent to write compelling narratives and characters. Other issue is the lack of patience. Naruto was a long running series, and although it had its issues, i think it benefited from this, as Kishimoto had the time setup the story arcs and develop everything, so the emotional bits would pay off. In this fast paced and super competitive era, the new shounes seens to be on mach speed, rushing every arc and character development just to ensure viewers wouldn't get bored. Its hard to care about anything when the story doesn't itselft doesn't slow down to show things. Naruto became a template for a new generation of mangas, and after many copycats, it became so twisted it became a parody of itself - to the point every new shounen became predictable and characters would often get compared to Naruto and Sasuke. This phenomenon ia not different from the Hokuto no Ken clones from the 80's, even JoJo started as one.
The Demon Slayer phenomenon in Japan is something amazing. My Japanese wife lost interest in manga years ago. The last manga she read was slam dunk when she was in high school and she fell in love demon slayer. The amount of demon slayer goods she bought kind of worries me.

I haven't caught up to the latest chapter but I have heard about the war and stuff. I'd say having a 2 year or 3 year time jump would be optimal. 1-A could reach the third year or even after their graduation. Would allow Deku and others to get a lot stronger and even let's Shigaraki do his stuff.
Fr man the series has soo much potential. You should check out Undead unluck too man it's really good and it doesn't rely on gropey humor as eyepatch suggests.
Demon Slayer was a dark horse. It came almost out of no where and defeated everyone and everything in sales (manga volume sales and Japanese box office sales)
@Yahya Patwa Oricon's official numbers is 4.3 million sales last year, whoever told you those numbers lied. It was still the 10th best selling manga last year
I can't understand nowdays how people compared 23 volumes sales (Whole manga), with 1 to 3 volumes of the rest mangas. I can't understand that from Oricon. One piece has almost 600 million copies sold, and KnY only 82. Can we really compare that?. KnY sold only 6 million copies on that year volumes. And I read all the manga. No big deal really.
It’s too early to get an anime. A studio could easily burn through its chapters and the anime would catch up to the manga too soon especially since SpyxFamily only releases chapters monthly.
@@CalmClamFam I thought it releases bi-weekly. But sometimes the author takes rest and was only released 1 chapter in one month... But usually it's only take 2 weeks per chapter

I like how Demon Slayer ended the way the author wanted it to end, before the hype train got a little too out of control. Look at the big three. Two of them ran far longer than they should have, leaving a weak ending or weak middle. Demon Slayer isn't going to run forever. It won't burn out its author. It won't run until it's a shell of itself. It told a story, and a good story at that. Dragging a story out forever means you run the risk of making the overall story seem weak. You have to constantly introduce new obstacles for characters to overcome. Instead of having a conclusion, you prolong the characters struggles until sales start to fall.
They made most profitable movie in japan history during freaking Covid-19 pandemic. What a legend. Say what you want about Demon Slayer it maybe not a king of shounen, but it sure as hell carved its name into the history of manga and anime forever.
finding out about what happened with ACT-AGE was hard. It was my new favourite manga since Berserk and HunterxHunter, and to find out the writer that wrote such an empathetic, emotional story was such a horrible person was heartbreaking
It's unfortunate when a series ends at the peak of it's hype, but it can be better for a series to end when it's story is completed rather than trying to force it to keep going and drag the quality of it down in an attempt to run as long as possible.

My comments: I think manga story-telling has outgrown the weekly format and needs to change just based on writer's health or time needed to write a more engaging/ground breaking story. I think Ghost Writer getting canned gave the impression of "don't look behind the curtain or at how awful living is in this profession". A story like that would prolly have done well in anything else but Jump IMO. Build King not doing well doesn't shock me because I always felt Shimabukuro had neat ideas in manga but follow-through was always weak... Toriko is a good example of "neat idea but bad execution". I feel writers ending their stories on their own terms (like Demon Slayer) needs to happen more. I hope Yusei's new series does well and while I like Yabuki's art style and paneling I'm strongly not a fan of his slow shift into more ecchi titles afer Black Cat's run. Love your work and getting a moment to hear someone talk an language on manga I understand is always welcomed into my life.
The world of anime and manga is going to be utterly transformed in a few years anyway. Most people do not see it coming at all, because of how niche the technology is right now. But there's a new field where computers and neuroscience is being combined, to create brain computer interfaces. (Kernel Flux and Flow are the state of the art right now). Soon artists will be able to transfer their art to a computer merely by wearing a helmet and thinking about what they want to draw. What do you think will happen when it is possible to produce an entire anime episode and multiple manga chapters within a single day? It's gonna be chaos!
@@danielrodrigues4903 Kernel Flux monitors real time brain activity rather than reading and being able to act on what that information means. Think it will still be a while before technology will be able to represent very specific details such as what an artist is visualising in their mind, and even longer still for that to be widespread.
@@TheClearSummer Oh hey, someone who's heard of Kernel! Didn't expect to see that here! :D And of course, Kernel Flux/Flow will just be the medium, they will only monitor and display brain activity. They won't be the ones transforming your thoughts to pictures. But that's why we have machine learning/deep learning. AI has come really far in generating media (StyleGan2 being the best example). Once we start receiving high quality brain data from these BCIs, it's only a matter of time until all those rich datasets are fed to algorithms that will be trained to interpret them. A professor in a futurist forum gave his thoughts about Kernel Flow last year, and mentioned that perhaps generating pictures that someone was thinking could be possible. (link removed) The CEO of Kernel himself responded in that thread, providing further affirmative remarks, saying that most people were underestimating Flow. (link removed) Considering that Flux is even more powerful, I think it's possible that Thought-To-Image at the very least will be here by around 2025 to 2030. P.S.: UA-cam isn't allowing me to post this comment with the links in, so I took them out. If you want to see the post, google "kernel flow futuretimeline" it is the very first result on the page.
@@danielrodrigues4903 Interesting stuff, for sure! I'm actually a psychology student (although admittedly I don't particularly specialise in neuroscience), so to some degree I've always been a little skeptical because of how complex the brain is and how very little we still understand of it (a lot of that is technological limitations though, for sure). And while we can already use machines to understand motor movement as well, I am a little skeptical as to how well this technology can understand abstract thought, and how hyperspecific neuron activations get to represent those thoughts, and how an algorithm can interpret it. I think you're absolutely right and doubtless a combination of real time renditions of literally every neuron firing ever combined with algorithms to monitor the patterns behind activations will speed up our understanding hugely, it's just that I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be much harder for humans to interpret the high quality brain data we have in order to set up the initial foundation of understanding that algorithms can operate on. Just because we have good data doesn't mean we have the capacity to use or understand it. Of course, I might be just a bit too skeptical - but the way I see it our current scientific methods and approaches which try to understand variables in isolation is VERY much unsuited to understanding complex, interacting, changing networks like the brain, which is always processing, interpreting, thinking, and actually changing, with the environment through multiple modes and interfaces. Even if we can capture what is physically happening, I think trying to understand, empirically prove and establish the relationship between certain areas and its activation to XYZ, and then to map this into our understanding of the brain as an entire structure, is a huge feat not to be underestimated. Not to mention the fact that relationships between the brain and behaviour are never straight forward. I actually feel like the brain is something which can perhaps only be understood by a computer, ironically, and not another brain. But then we enter into a bit of a deadlock, since the computer will rely on the human to kick start its learning process, but it's the human who will most probably get stuck. That said, I'm probably also underestimating how many people are working on the subject and furthering the field and our understanding all the time. But I do think it's worth recognising just how monumental a task it is even to begin trying to understand the brain. A neuroscience professor at my university who went on to the BBC had his interview cut when he tried to say that we currently only understand 1% of the brain, haha. But like I said, I'm not a particularly neurosciency person, so there are probably lots of people out there who are a lot more informed about the brain than me and who think otherwise. Thanks for sharing the links though! This has been pretty interesting!

its kinda misleading tho. I think john also pointed it out in the vid. The Shibuya incident arc in Jujutsu Kaisen was the best thing manga related in 2020. The scope, the set pieces, the execution... everything was amazing
I don't know if it's just me but one of the reasons I was so drawn in my Demon Slayer was the way it dealt with evil and the protagonist. It treats evil as a tragedy. The series seems to say "Yes there is evil out there, that evil may deserve punishment, but it's sad that it is so. It's a tragedy when that evil must be met with force. If someone had a been a bit kinder, a touch more understanding, or a little more just, then perhaps this could have been avoided." Many of the demons die lamenting what they've become, sadly only realizing their follies in full in their final moments of life. Even if killing them was the only way to deal with them, that doesn't make it any less mournful. Tanjiro was more relatable at least to me as a hero because he wasn't just a rough and tumble shonen hero, perpetually overflowing with hotblooded desire to fight strong opponents or be a master. Instead, he was kind, relatively soft hearted, and compared to some shonen protagonists, soft spoken. He was capable of immense righteous fury, but that never outweighed his compassion. He seemed to understand the underlying tragedy behind the monsters he faced and felt sorrow for the demons rather than overwhelming hatred. It would have been easy to write such a story about a haunted person consumed by a thirst for blood and vengeance, but the author chose to write a character of a softer disposition and for me, that's more easily relatable.
Tanjiro embodied the idea of "I'm not sorry for what I did, but I'm sorry I had to do it." That was definitely the most compelling part of the series, having a gentle heart without the frequent shounen cop-out of just letting villains go after a good punching with little-to-no consequence. It's just a shame that for me (anime production aside) that's all the series really had going for it and it's not a card you can play all that frequently. A couple times an arc, at most. I think that's why the anime was so huge. Gorgeous animation and stellar production across the board helped keep people engaged between those key moments in a way that the writing often didn't.
Hm, reading your description of him might be the push I needed to finally dig into the series. When it soared in popularity, I became even more hesitant to watch it because usually when I watch a show that's hyped up, I end up expecting something from it every episode. :') Part of what makes a series good to me are the characters- if I can't relate or find them endearing, then I might as well not watch the show.
I absolutely loved the way this was handled, but is it easier to ignore Zenitsu in the manga? I nearly dropped the anime because I can barely stand his gimmick. I cannot fathom the popularity of this series with Zenitsu in it.
@@overkill1340 it definitely is easier. He is barely in the train arc, asleep most of the rld arc, not in the village arc, and is serious most of the last arc
I'm so happy for Demon Slayer, I loved it's run. It was such a beautiful story, both visually (i loved the manga art so much, not only the anime was interesting visually in my opinion) and as much as I would have preferred the last "future" chapter never to exist, the whole run made me so existed, I remember smiling while reading it and cring too. So I'm thankful for the experience. .... at the same time, I love Act Age too.... and god... the whole story behind it makes me sick...such a waste of potential, I hope the artist gets to work with someone better, her art is stunning and full of life.
Not just that, but it has some really amazing action. It's an unusual style of action that is more reminiscent of western movies, especially stuff like John Wick or Leon, and it's really fitting for the theme of the manga. It's a blast and definitely one of the strongest of the new batch (I also love Roboco a lot but I guess that's a bit more of an acquired taste).
@@HaganeNoGijutsushi yeah actually I went back and reread the last 2 chapters after reading this and I see exactly what you meant. I also love the slapstick paneling, it's fun to read not just for the story but how the story is being told. I'll give roboco a chance and see how I like it seeing as you enjoy it as much as Sakamoto Days
@@EcchiHeroOda Roboco gets definitely better after the first chapters, but its main strengths are absurdist humour and meta-humour (not just about being a manga, but specifically about being a _Jump_ manga). In general, it's meant as a parody of Doraemon, so that bit might be lost on you if you don't know the original (I only know it superficially myself, enough to spot the most blatant similarities and that's it). The great thing about Roboco IMO is just how outlandish it can get. One of the best chapters has the protagonists visit Shueisha - the publisher of Weekly Shonen Jump - because Roboco wants to submit a manga. This includes some hilarious and dark background gags like a mangaka having died of overwork who gets tossed in the incinerator with the unsold copies of last week's number. It's full of more or less cutting satire of Jump manga in general as well as just plain nonsense situations (like an entire chapter that's an extreme, shonen-like battle on Bondo's friends part to put pants on him without him realising he misses them in the first place - don't ask).
honestly i’m really happy that jump’s long runners are finally ending. those mangaka really deserve a break, and it’s a good opportunity for new series to take the stage
I think Chainsawman was damn near perfect, I think it had a bit of shaky start and the ending could have been stronger, but the pacing was very strong, the characters were incredible, there as always tension, it kept you guessing, and denji's progressionw as top notch.
I really enjoyed Chainsaw Man for the wild ride and good characters, but at the end of the day, much like fire punch, I don’t know if I actually liked it. I’m certainly going to read part 2 just because I’m strapped into the ride and there’s no getting off.
Just finished reading Chainsaw Man. I'm gonna be honest, I was not feeling it for the first ten chapters, but the story got wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better as it went on. That ending was more than worth it and I can't wait for Part 2.
@Rando flawlessly? How tho. You remember the girl who was from Russia and was killed by makima and the other dude(dunno why she didn't use her power but anyways). I wanted to know more about her mission and why she came like atleast a few more chapters. Also makima's reason for killing so many people was really not reasonable tbh also her power reveal was not at all surprising (given the build up she had). And from what I remember they also didn't explain a lot of other powers of makima. Then so many people died during the whole battle royale , like people with almost no backstory or smth became one of important characters and just died after their role was over. Like atleast make me feel bad or feel something , it almost felt like the author wanted everyone dead and was just trying to make that happen somehow. That said , it also had many good parts , just not the story part but character conversations or cool imagery. The whole plot was not bad but I feel like the author should've written 10-20 more chapters and slowed down a little bit. This arc should've been the ending arc to chainsaw man.
Sakamoto Days is awesome, I loved the characters and their interactions. I hope this one can stick around. Also, Monster Nr 8 is awesome too, I love that the character is 33 years old and not an 18 year old teen
I actually feel like that may be the intended way to read it. As in, his self worth was multiplied thanks to his burgeoning relationship with his family.

I think JJK is the one series that I'm gonna stay anime only for. Mappa is doing such a fuckin bang up job and looking forward to each episode each week got me through the pandemic lol. I'm hyped if the manga readers have this many good things to say about it
It's the best arc from a "new Gen" shounen, for sure. Shibuya can legit stand up to classic arcs like Soul Society, Dark Tournament, Chimera Ant, Chunin Exams, Enies Lobby etc., it's really fucking good.
Hearing a lot of these new manga, particularly Sakamoto, SpyxFamily, Mashle and Kaiju no 8, are doing so well makes me both relieved and happy. I was super worried that the frequent breaks taken from SxF and Kn8 were results of physical health and company issues, so seeing that this is actually the exact opposite makes me super excited to see them thrive.
And one year later, both SxF and Kaiju no. 8 are doing fantastic still! Was actually super surprised to hear both were getting an anime relatively soon after their initial release.
Honestly there's not a single thing about Fujimoto's work that isn't fascinating so far. I think depending on how Part 2 and the anime are gonna turn out, we can be looking at a modern classic and I coudn't be happier. Chainsaw deserves all the hype and recognition
@@rumncoke76 Tbh, I guess the reason why its fascinating is because the series? Is kind of breath of a fresh air considering the brutality and sometimes the depressing moments of the manga but at the same time, has some wholesome moments including the ending. But yeah, can't wait for Part. 2

@Yahya Patwa aot is published by kodansha not shounen jump
And of course, Kernel Flux/Flow will just be the medium, they will only monitor and display brain activity.
(link removed)
The CEO of Kernel himself responded in that thread, providing further affirmative remarks, saying that most people were underestimating Flow. (link removed)
Considering that Flux is even more powerful, I think it's possible that Thought-To-Image at the very least will be here by around 2025 to 2030.

Well said friend.
Delighted to hear you enjoy Sakamoto Days, I feel the same way. Such a wholesome series
Goddammit, that "You have NOT passed" panel brought a tear to my eye
2020 was a huge year for Shonen Jump IMO, all one piece, jujutsu kaisen and chainsawman performed so incredibly good and were just amazing reads
2021 is gonna be a hard year to follow up
@Azhan Ahmed well I said IMO
honestly i’m really happy that jump’s long runners are finally ending. those mangaka really deserve a break, and it’s a good opportunity for new series to take the stage
@@SengokuTheGouda I think Chainsawman was much more enjoyable than Fire Punch, all things considered Fire Punch is quite a heavy series.
You talking like its over
@@TheMrXcalizorz I only read the first several chapters of fire punch. It felt really edgy, is the whole series like that
@@suf1an658 give it a chance it’s much more than that
Just finished reading Chainsaw Man. I'm gonna be honest, I was not feeling it for the first ten chapters, but the story got wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better as it went on. That ending was more than worth it and I can't wait for Part 2.
i kinda stopped reading it because the mc just felt uninterested half way in the introduction. might finish reading it later if i have time.
@@aim-9sidewinder550 my guy o probably have a attention span of a fish
ok ill pick it back up then
You liked the story? Man I thought it was rushed , like characters getting introduced and getting killed in like 5-6 chapters of their introduction.
@Rando flawlessly? How tho.
I was just thinking how much I was craving a new Super Eyepatch Wolf video.
Sakamoto Days is awesome, I loved the characters and their interactions. I hope this one can stick around. Also, Monster Nr 8 is awesome too, I love that the character is 33 years old and not an 18 year old teen
Laughed so hard at "SpyMultipliedByFamily" 😂
I actually feel like that may be the intended way to read it.
As in, his self worth was multiplied thanks to his burgeoning relationship with his family.
I havent read manga in 8 years. I used to love this shit and knew all the obscure gems. I'm so happy i chanced upon your video today, made me bookmark so many titles. Can't wait to dive into them again. So much has changed
Jjk is crazy rn, the Shibuya incident is one of the best shonen arcs Ive ever read
And to think it was only a set up arc
@@shockzz1234 me too i'm sticking with the anime cause i think it's elevating the manga THAT MUCH does it really stand up to even enies lobby :o
Shibuya arc is amazing srsly
Hearing a lot of these new manga, particularly Sakamoto, SpyxFamily, Mashle and Kaiju no 8, are doing so well makes me both relieved and happy. I was super worried that the frequent breaks taken from SxF and Kn8 were results of physical health and company issues, so seeing that this is actually the exact opposite makes me super excited to see them thrive.
And one year later, both SxF and Kaiju no. 8 are doing fantastic still! Was actually super surprised to hear both were getting an anime relatively soon after their initial release.
@@NoonDragoonhoping for sakomoto days😊
"Unless something crazy happens in JJK"
They about to make you eat those words in the next season lmao.
Still disappointed he just shortly mentioned JJK. Clearly an anime only.
please a lot of crazy things are happening in the manga rn dhdjd
ikr,chapter 135-137 is fire
Psst. Massive genocide and curse taking over its host's brain... and Chtullhu.
although i read the manga i'm already hyped
"the heart of jump has always been screaming boys punching each other"
Sometimes screaming men too.
@@isabelrodriguezsjolund9701 that die in the 90's, now its mostly teenage boys......
In terms of unique and compelling storytelling, I find Chainsaw Man Fascinating! Can't wait to see the anime adaptation.
Hopefully the anime adaptation would be great haha.
Also just gonna leave this video for CSM fan: ua-cam.com/video/WchO-rgvnJA/v-deo.html
I think demon slayers success also comes down to how popular it is with elementary school students. They absolutely love it here in Japan
I don't think that's the case, all elementary schoolers read other shonens too, they can't push something to 82 million copies sold.
@@justsomeguyontheinternet.4398 believe me. Demon slayer is massively popular in Japan. Not just for kids but also middle aged and old people regardless of gender. Asians especially Japanese people love it.
@@eigenrauflinog9069 I said the same thing, I said that only elementary schoolers CAN'T make a series soo popular.
@@justsomeguyontheinternet.4398 shonen literally means young men. Elementary schoolers are the audience
people say demon slayer gets carried by animation but imo season 1 had a really good story for the first half cus it felt kinda like everything was at stake the entire time but then when tanjiro gets friends it just becomes fun which isnt a bad thing so id say animation is 50% of contribution and story is 50%
