UGH massive correction, that was not a photo of Akira Toriyama that was Go Nagoi, no idea how that one got by me, huge thank you to everyone who pointed it out.
I wonder if actually the story was supposed to be focused on him rather than Senku as a "reader-camera" following the actual Hero of the story. Because someone saw It like this but... I didn't. To me (and many people, arguably most people) It was just a way to introduce the setting and the premise without focusing on the protagonist in the First Pages, in order to make him able to already be free from the stone and doing cool things, not fighting monkeys
Hyperversum im pretty sure Boichi has outright confirmed in an interview that Taiju was the mc but it was quickly switched to Senku a few chaps in ie The village arc
Dr. Stone is freaking stellar. Beautiful art, great characters, interesting science based on reality (mostly), it's something that feels genuinely unique and brings a smile to my face every chapter It started off slow, but the series has definitely found it's footing in "mad sciencer" Senku's crazy antics.
I have a theory after watching this video about why My Hero Academia went down in the table of contents. I work with elementary and middle school kids in Japan, and while many of the younger kids are still into pokemon and such, the older kids are actually pretty in to MHA. But not the manga. The anime. One of my students is pretty obsessed with it and has tons of merch, but she's only seen the anime. So, my theory, it's possible that MHA dropped in rankings not because of a drop in popularity, but because the manga probably doesn't work very well as a selling point. People still want to read it, but it's not the reason they're buying the weekly book. The anime is what everyone is watching over here. Dr. Stone and the Demon Slayer takabons are also allllllllll over the displays in bookstores.
Furor Teutonicus Sorry, sincerely, I cant tell if your comment is that the manga is doing better now that there is an anime, or that the manga was doing better before the anime? I definitely believe the manga is doing better now, rather than it was before the anime. But that doesn't mean it's the main selling point of the Weekly Shonen Jump. People are buying the weekly releases for One Piece, Gintama, and whatever else happens to be on the cover so they can decide if they want to buy the takabon. For BnHA, everyone is buying the takabon/book over here, so much so that I can't even buy the volumes in order, I've had to buy them randomly when I'm able to find them. The bookshelves are always sold out. But the anime is still way more popular than the manga, because the anime is free and you can watch it without cable, every week on Saturday at 5.
the quality of the adaptation is so good that people are probably staving off reading the manga in order to wait for the story beats to be complemented by Bones' impeccable animation and direction, and Yuki Hayashi's impeccable score. it's practically the exact opposite of One Piece or Naruto, where the anime are so middling and inconsistent in quality that it hammers up manga sales as it's by a DISTANCE the best way to experience the story.
Manga /tankobon probably fare better in other countries outside of Japan. Those sales could be driving MHA. But that leaves the series at a disadvantage because only WSJ readers would vote for its popularity.
Jepersprepur I know? It is really refreshing to have someone showcase that level of humility and be candid about his mistake/ rectifying it. Hubris is never a good thing.
aka doing the bare minimum, correcting a blatant mistake that shouldnt have been there in the first place, considering how little research was needed and so how even less research he must have done. and it's not like he was hit by a complete shitstorm... he's one of if not the most widely respected anituber out there
reversecolin1256788 well, at least you realize your opinion is purely based on bias and ignorance. I stated nothing but simple facts, nothing snobbish or elitist. a snob would say for example that "EPW is overrated and rides on his editing skill and good voice", but I didnt say that (because I dont believe it). So I have no clue what you're on about bub
leo sky well I am in my late 20s part of being an adult is understanding that what's in writing may not be the person as a whole or even full intent. also I didn't call you elitist and trust me... I wont been on the internet long enough to smell that shit 5 miles down wind. I truly wish you a good day and I hope you continue to play chess
Oh wow. It's kind of fascinating watching these older videos from the future. Jujutsu Kaisen is EVERYWHERE now. I should probably watch it at some point.
Man, the thousand year blood war arc ended so fast. I was expecting at least 50 more chapters. It was a shame since the artwork was actually beginning to pick up again.
Arsalan Hashmi It was cut quicker it supposed to be. Kubo originally wanted to make last two arcs longer and more properly done + there was supposed to be another French based arc. But well we got what we got - there will be Bleach 2.0, tho. The one with witches aka western soul society branch.
The reason I think One Piece is the peak of Shounen storytelling is that there is never going to be a story as well developed or community focused as it. I really don’t know much about this analysis stuff, but the way One Piece differs is that you can feel the world living, things happening outside of the frame of the story, and every character having their own motivations and thoughts. One Piece is also really underrated in how it uses the medium. By giving pieces of information, it is often possible to figure out what is going to happen next, but you can never be sure because of Odas creative writing! By utilizing a massive world that feels real, and combining it with hints that get the fans talking and theorizing about the series, it makes people think about One Piece even when there are no new chapters out. I’m willing to say that no other current Jump title is as good at cliffhangers, or creating theory bait. By maximizing the time people think about One Piece it makes the series something worth discussing, giving it an active fanbase. It is definitely not as art focused as other series, and the combat system can be whimsical at times, but it is in many ways an incredibly engaging story, which makes people want to continue reading and, more importantly, discussing it. A lot of other series are a better reading experience on a chapter basis, but no other series has (or probably ever will have) the community aspect in the same way. That’s just my two cents though, and I’m open for discussion.
jonamedhatten One Piece isn't the peak of Shonen story telling, sorry to break your buble but that's just a lie, specially when you have shonen like FMA.
@@CraShFTW I mainly argue that One Piece is the best because of the community and worldbuilding aspects, both of which are cathegories that are important to me. Both are also cathegories in which One Piece clearly outranks FMA. I'm curious what aspects of a shounen you value, in which, for an example, FMA is better than One Piece?
@@CraShFTW This is going to be quite a lengthy response, I'm just warning you ahead of time. First, character development. This is just not necessarily true. Characters in One Piece are, for the most part, incredibly well developed. Take someone like señor pink, the 5th-10th oe so strongest antagonist of the dressrosa arc. He is a minor villain, and yet has more time dedicated to showing his background and motivation than a character like Wendy, or probably any of the main villains of FMA. That being said, this is more character depth than character growth, which you also might have been reffering to. It is true that the main characters of One Piece don't grow from their journey in the same way that some of the main cast of FMA does. However, the protagonist of One Piece mostly serves as a lense through which we view the world, where as in FMA the story is one centered around the protagonist. This makes character growth more necessary in the context of FMA, but it still honestly does not have much from the main cast. You can see how their physical appearances change, but their mentality in the beginning of the show is similar to that which they display right before the end. I disagree with you, but feel free to correct me if you have any examples that disprove my opinion. Arc structure I would just simply agree with you. One Piece can be messy at times. Arcs often flow into each other, and it can be unclear what is actually happening in some cases. Now, storytelling is where I'm going to just ask if you've watched One Piece? The one thing One Piece has been praised for time and time again is the storytelling. With the art being considerably worse than that of many popular series, the one thing that truly carries One Piece is the story telling. It is apparent in a shorter story perspective, take for an example the Skypeia arc and the Noland flashback, which are intertwined beautifully, the flashback giving the current events much more weight on at least three levels. It is most apparent in a long term story trlling perspegtive though. One Piece introduced what is currently thought to be the main villain of the show in the 3rd saga, and we are currently on the 8th saga I believe. A character which currently is very relevant to the story, and was last seen only a few chapters ago, was namedropped first time before chapter 100. One Piece excels at storytelling, like no other show I've heard of. FMA is also amazing, with a very well structured plot. The storytelling in short term is really good, but when you look at the series as a whole, it really shows a lack of significance and forshadowing to events, which makes things like the final villain seem asspullish and strange. One Piece would never have that same problem. Speaking of the final villain, powerscaling is the main problem people bring up with FMA. (Spoiler if anyone is reading this and haven't seen it) Suddenly you have these god-level charactets that just appeared out of nowhere and apparently has been there all along though we have never seen a hint of them being evil. Aside from that, they are somehow defeated, despite there being at least 3 villains stronger than pretty much all the good guys together. One Piece on the other hand has a logical power progression explaind by the fact that the further they come, the further into the journey they are, facing others who have come that far. It's like the world of One Piece and partixularly the grand line is a big fight arena where everyone fights people who have made it exactly as far as they have, and they thus grow stronger at a reasonable pace. There are also no incredibly over powered god level characters in One Piece, aside from those established as the strongest in the world, and because of One Pieces storybuilding we know they were known and established characters since before the story even began, unlike in FMA where they just appear, nobody knowing snything of their existence. All of this is just my opinion though, and I truly love debating this kind of stuff so if anyone, or particularly you Antony, disagrees be sure to tell me why, and I'll reconsider if I think your arument makes sense.
I've never really touched One Piece, mainly since it's so huge. I just don't know where to jump in. It's why I'm glad I got into anime when I did, right before the new wave of shounen shows. But that issue is something FMA doesn't have, since it's just short enough for me to say "alright, this'll take awhile, but not absurdly long". It also helps that FMA is on Netflix.
I felt like the school festival parts fell a little flat. (spoiler) the fight Deku has was really good but framing it all around the kind of mundane school festival was meh. School Festival thing should have been like one chapter side story the way it played out. I rather liked the Endeavor parts. Him trying to find his place and reconcile with his family after becoming the #1 hero in the worst way possible for him is a great part of the story to develop.
@@norishimogawa6125 in a the middle of a fight a storm accures and washes the crew onto raftel, where they find a big red button they press it and the red line blows up and the calm belt instantly ceceas lol
The author just decided to end the weekly full chapters and move to a weekly 4-koma. And I think that Saiki is a perfect series to transition into 4-koma, with saiki knowing that he’s in a manga and all.
lol, that was like that the last 2 or 3 times at best, now you don't know how long will be the hiatus, and even with that, talk about "consistently continuing" lol.
As a huge one piece fan, I am really curious about one piece's rise to fame, but I have never heard anyone talk about it. How long did it take one piece to rise to the top, and when did it become the undisputed cultural landmark it did? I know some of that happened over time, but I am sure one could mark arcs and story points that caused spikes in sales and popularity. I think a video on the subject would be absolutely fascinating, and I cant believe it hasnt been done yet.
Lucas Shef let me answer it for you in simple way. One Piece became popular because there were no Pirate Style manga. So it was unique. And then the characters design and personality is pretty unique. More words got spread across Japan and it became popular after a year of the release first volume. It took around 5 years to get the crown for One Piece of Best Selling manga. And after that, the rest is history
It has been done! Check out One Piece Podcast's trip to Japan documentary and the various interviews has conducted throughout the years. Some of these are compiled in Color Walk Compendiums and some are compiled on the Arlong Park Forums Interview Thread.
not sure but i heard it first really exploded of popularity with the Drum Island arc because all the stuff with Chopper and the Cherry Blossom at the end really hit something with Japanese people.
Still on the monuments task of catching up on One Piece, only just finished Thriller bark and have no clue how long until time skip, and how much to go after the time skip. But god damn One Piece hasn't missed a beat for me. It blows my mind how much fun it has and the creativity of it all. I haven't felt this much child like joy since I cheered for All Might when he punched Nomu. The series is just a rapid fire Gomu Gomu no Gatling of new ideas at a break neck pace.
I was thinking "hmmm, maybe I'll check out Dr Stone" and then you said who the author was. Eyeshield 21 is one of my favourite manga ever, I've read it at least three times. So I will definitely check it out!!
HunterxHunter is still god-like to me. One Piece is still god-like to me. My Hero Academia has always been an "okay, this is fun" show to me, but I'm surprised to see it fall so much. Wouldn't have guessed that!
not really falling....the sales are always getting bigger and it's always in the top 10 of best selling series every year as eyepatch said this ranking isn't really that telling since it depend on many factors for example haikyuu is the second best selling shonen jump manga righ now....and it ranked 8 in that list
creepy truck driver i dont think its the universe. Its like he said, its core ideas are so reused, same deal with Black clover. HXh was so strategiv an original. Thats why those two new shounen are being suscesfull they are trying to introduce new formulas to the shounen genre. One Piece is OP tho, amazing world for sure.
C Vox ofcourse its not. Dr. Stkne came out in 2017 while MHA came out in 2014 and BC in 2015. The series has 2-3 years to catch up and it needs an anime adaptation But its going in a great direction and its highly unique and the fighting is determined by science which is very different.
HxH feels more strategic than most Shounen which I’m thankful. One Piece has an amazing sense of adventure that is rivaled with DBZ for me. MHA feels like Japan’s answer to Marvel Comics.
Kevin Dragneel yeah i know it's one of my favorites....honestly i even like it even more than PNL thou to be fair in the same time frame mha was selling 2,190,845 in 2015 www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2015-11-29/top-selling-manga-in-japan-by-series-2015/.95913
I literally started reading Dr. Stone because of your mention in LFAB podcast and gotta say you introduced me a wonderful Friday where I can't wait for the new episode's translation to drop, and the praise the series gets from this video makes my day.
Aditionally, you may want to read everything else Boichi has been a part of if you like his artwork. Particulary "Sun-ken Rock" (that is complete) and "Origin".
I never understood the hate for Endeavor's characters development in the latest my hero academia arc. Yeah he's a douche and really behaved in a terrible way but it doesn't mean he can't progress and get better. I heard that some japanese readers sent death threats to Horikoshi for this... It's absurd... as if he was the first ever negative character getting some development... Like have people never met Helmeppo from One Piece or Vegeta from Dragonball? This My hero arc is great and the series is only improving right now.
EmmeKira the problem is mostly kids or tweens read MHA and they dont grasp a character can change because literally every other character in MHA is so single track generic. I mean look at AoT for comparison Eren started out as a edgy teenager that wants to kill monsters to save his comunity ends up a war criminal invading countries and eating people alive.
it always funny how people are saying that heroaca is not that good becuase the fights are not that good. yes, fights are cool and all but cmon, how can you not like good chracter moments and developments. if s1 rates a show just by its action then i feel sory of them
Kevin Delgado that's just not true. Simply by watching how much Izuku has grown both as a hero and as a person is an example of growth. Even more than that: Bakugo and Todoroki. Yes, as many battle shounens My Hero doesn't have the deepest character evolution, and the reason for that is that it's not required to have it. Yes characters should be well developed and from time to time change and mature but you don't need psichological journeys... Cause this is not that kind of series. It's a great battle manga, one of the best of these times even (I would argue one of the best of the last 15 years) and it doesn't need to do much more than that with its characters.
Possibly my favorite is Doctor Stone. When I started reading it I hadn't heard much about it, except that it involved stone...and a doctor. Needless to say, I really got into it. Read almost 20 chapters while off one day and I'm eagerly awaiting its official translation. Senku and Taiju were such entertaining characters and I liked seeing their scientist and muscle head like relationship, and it's pretty interesting with how they incorporate science into each chapter. I will say though, the beginning is kind of a slow burn, the real meat of the series, in my opinion, doesn't really kick in until Senku parts ways with Taiju after certain events transpire. But yeah, I really hope it does well.
While I do think that MHA is fairly generic and and are some issues with it's story and worldbuilding, I also agree with Digibro's point that the MHA anime is the new level of refinement on how long-running anime adaptations are handled. Done seasonally with minimal filler and time taken between seasons to actually produce good quality animation. If One Piece had been done in this way, it would be an overwhelming improvement.
MHA is not flopping because of the adaptation, it's flopping because the source material is not as good as before Manga were always published the same way, and how the adaptation is made does not affect that
how is MHA flopping ? This is just the page ranking, it's the most popular shonen right now and in terms of overall manga sales, it's number 3 right after One Piece and Haikyuu ?
Everyone can 'say' whatever they like, MHA still has the trappings of every other shonen. And for almost every spin that it tries to put on the formula, it leaves a problem that turn some people off to it to which the only real way to defend it is to say "just turn your brain off and it's fine".
I personally found the first two seasons to be fantastic with the emotional climaxes being exceptionally well done. I've disliked most of season 3 though and find that the writing has taken a sharp nose dive.
Never Trust An Elf I like the designs of Kenshiro, Momo and Jotaro. And Momo is basically the less known and missing link in the evolution chain from Kenshiro to Jotaro. Plus they are the manly trinity of the 80's :)
That Hunter X Hunter panel with the Phantom Troupe hurts. It reminds me of how interesting things were getting before the current hiatus. On a positive note though... very interesting video!
One Piece = Floyd Mayweather of manga. Unparalleled success. Lots of naysayers but the paper trail says otherwise. Industry will be different once it’s gone. Series will be missed.
I get this was to make up for the botched 2017 video, but can this be a running series? You have a really interesting way of taking about these mangas and it’s be certainly interesting to see how shonen jump changes under new leadership in the up coming years.
Dr. Stone's premise actually sounds amazing, that's actually one of the most creative things that I've ever heard, especially from shounen that has a bit of a problem with originality at times.
It was a well edited and well narrated video but what he said was wrong in a lot of ways. Facts don't care whether you like them or not ;) Emotion Vs. Reason
The editing and general level of this video were really great. I'm happy to be along for the ride regardless of the quality, because I find the topics and contents of other videos good. I just wanted to say that I noticed the increase in quality and appreciate it. Cheers.
brutalarts S I haven't seen the anime but it looks like shit. But I read the manga and it's like my favorite thing in life, I just don't like how the anime looks.
I just don't like it because it's going to take forever to catch up on every episode. Don't even get me started how much filler there is in that series.
Wow, at first I was skeptical to Dr. Stone, but the more you talk about it, the more interesting it gets. SHONEN BATTLE MANGA WHERE THEY FIGHT WITH SCIENCE?! That's sounds just like my cup of tea.
It's really good. It's funny because Yuki Tabata (Mangaka of Black Clover) had a previous manga named Hungry Joker, and that had science based fights as well. Yet jump cancelled it. I'm actually surprised that Dr. Stone was able to get 3rd place in TOC. Crazy.
The only thing I think is holding the story back is the comedy. It's almost like One Piece in how the characters are always moving around everywhere full of energy -- but there comes a point where the gleefulness goes from endearing to annoying. That's why the manga got better as soon as Taiju's ass got dropped.
I like the manga, but I feel like it's going to be better as an anime. So many sequences could be made more suspenseful or exciting with a soundtrack. I can't wait to see it.
One Piece is too op in Jump...its got the quality as well as the quantity. And even if a series can match its quality it cant match its quantity. Which is why even when it ends it will still be number 1
Troilland Ford Why not? It's by far one of the top shounens for a reason, even with its lenght. People would be pissed af if you did that, i guarantee it.
Sleep comparing OP to the likes of Dr stone and mha is like forcing a match between a supernova and a yonko, you can't expect the fight to be on equal footing. On a sidenote, I guess I just wanna see the state of shonen jump without including one piece partly because I wanna follow the upcoming mangakas and their works. It's only a matter of time before we see another talented mangaka who will influence the new wave of artists kinda like toriyama.
I'm glad robot x Laserbeam got a complete run. I have Asperger's syndrome, and the way the characterized the MC was so spot on that he became a favorite character of mine.
Also I feel that Senku was always meant to be the protagonist, even back in chapter one due to his face appearing on the last page in the bottom where every protagonist's faces are.
Some people get called out on mistakes and get defensive and pissy about it - and then you Eyepatch Wolf who not only owns up to it but works with the main person correcting him to make something better! Fantastic work, my friend.
Dr. Stone is the MVP Newbie of Jump to me right now. The advancement of the tech tree is a little abstract, but shows that there is actual research into these things. The art and characters reactions combine to make very moving scenes when they've achieved their next big step. I just love it.
Same with Kimetsu no Yaiba :( I'm so sad that they are both ending, feels kind of rushed....both stories could have still continued for a whole other year (esp Demon Slayer, but TPM still has a lot of unanswered questions and potential arcs) without it feeling dragged
My hero academia will always be my favorite, and I feel it’s the true future of shonen jump in the way you describe it. But I gotta give it to doctor stone and promised never land. They are truly awesome.
MHA is a good manga, yeah. But it can never be the future of anything at all. Not the magazine, and much less shonen in general. It just picks up the same old characters, histories plot and worldbuilding and does them better, it didnt come up with anything brand new, imaginative nor original
@@ruben4257 True.Right now The promised neverland is fantastic, the concept is totally the opposite of Naruto ,MHA,Bleach and black clover. Also for me HxH and FMA looks still fresh a new.
Thing is One Piece will always remain at the top until it finishes, the story will only get more intense and hectic from this point on so until One Piece ends no manga will be the future
I’m not surprised black clover is that high up because while you can say it’s generic shounen , it honestly does the generic good and it’s been on a huge roll in 2018 with its arc being the best so far and looks like it’s gonna get even better . Black clover gets alot of hate and criticisms that don’t make alot of sense and come off as blind hating just because it’s cool .
That's the thing that gets to me ya know? Like sure Black Clover isn't nothing that most fans of shonen haven't seen before. But like despite that, it has this silly charm about it. The characters, even though they have been shown at times to be one note, they still find their way to be likable. Maybe not to fans who have seen of the tropes but maybe to people who just want a shonen just because it's a shonen. Dr. Stone and TPN I've never read but I can definitely tell that those stories have a huge vision than Black Clover but that doesn't make Black Clover seem unreadable. If anything it makes it feel like that "One Guy" scenario lol like that one person who's just doing he's own thing. That's Black Clover! It doesn't care about how bad or how generic it is, it only cares about its journey and I would definitely ride with it too. (Cheesey I know xD)
Roscoby Luci last list I checked had black clover I believe top 5 in manga sales so that’s not weak to its competition . Plus it’s airing on toonami I believe is #2 or #3 in viewership and the anime is still getting a lot of people watching even on the same level as MHA .
Roscoby Luci everything your saying still doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s #7 on the top selling manga in 2018 overall . Still incredible that it’s top ten even with its low volume sales . And it also doesn’t take away from the facts that this video just stated . Seven deadly sins ain’t nearly as popular here as it is in japan but does that take away from it being #3 on the recent list of top manga sales ?
The Promised Neverland and Dr Stone seem to be extremely interesting. Going to buy the first volumes. Haven’t read any manga in like 7 years and been needing someone to show me something intriguing and new. Side note. Started the One Piece anime recently and it’s so good, I’m on 327, but damn catching up sucksss.
Honestly I think the Endeavor stuff in MHA recently has been the best story content for a while. The Yakuza Arc felt kinda unfocused, and spent a bunch of time building up one time new characters rather than expanding on ones we already had And the culture festival took what should have been time developing class1-A and made it all about Deku fighting a one off villain....again. My friends keep telling me that all my problems revolve around the "Shonen genre" and I'll just have to get over it. But its nice to hear that things are changing a little bit, and that maybe theres a new series with something different coming.
I agree with everything you said. I would add that the only good part in the Pro Hero Arc was the Todoroki family stuff. HighEnd was just another Noumu, and Hawks didn't feel like a good or fleshed-out character at all. Dabi's appearance was just to put some spice into it, with absolutely no consequence whatsoever to the story; Hawks double-triple crossing left me with no feelings whatsoever. And Deku having Naruto-like dreams unnerves me. It's not about Shonen. It's about how you implement and innovate - or strengthen - the formula. I feel like MHA would be falling into the Bleach pit of "Not-so-good writing but sweet visuals", if it wasn't for the fact that in the West it's for all intents and purposes the new DBZ. MHA is stale right now. Really stale
Tbh, if we evaluate him in a vacuum, Gentle is probably the best villain so far. But Horikoshi keeps his tradition of blueballing me, with Deku keeping the fight going for way longer than needed instead of having Gentle get away and seeing how it develops. We dont talk about the Yakuza arc.
Peter Sanders I highly disagree with what you said, complaining about "just another Nomu" is pitty, it was meant to make a point in the story giving more speculations to the mistery of the Nomus, (specially with being a very special one and what it meant for Endeavor hero career and character) Why you said that about Hawks? we clearly know his motivations, beliefs and make a strong point of views in the world of heroes with various nuances and still there are mysteries about him, id say with the short time the dude has appeared plus is interactions has already become in a fleshed out character who still has a lot to show. And the double - triple crossing is just building up giving more room for developments in the story, the Dabi stuff was just a tease, because this storyline is far from over with a lot of possible paths. The Dekus dreams just pretty much adressed mostly what happend back then in the fight with Shinso and giving more depth to the lore and AFO. Comparing Bleach with MHA is just stupid, the reason Bleach failed was because it never had a north after the SS arc, and just recycled the same damsel in distress arc but much less inspired and on top of that with over the top incoherences and clearly desinterest by Tite Kubo, then the Fullbringers and the Blood arc turned it into a zombie series without goal whatsoever. MHA on the other hand is very loyal to his themes and story that have been building up so far, with foreshadowings, plotpoints and progresive character development, pretty much like OP but in a more small and compacted scale of course. I respect your opinion but honestly nothing of what you just said makes any sense.
TheRedfalcon Yeah, because the critiques ive seen dont make any sense, with poor arguments or lack of it to begin with, not to mention extremely bias. And your comentary isnt any different.
"I can't wait to see where it goes in the coming months, or what a potential anime adaptation could do for it" "Breaking News: Successful Shonen Jump Manga Dr. Stone-" "Yes?" "-is getting an anime adaptation-" "YES!!" "-Courtesy of Tokyo Ghoul and Black Clover's Studio Pierrot!" "...."
over powered that first arc? Flames. Best psych-horror/thriller I’ve ever seen in manga. After that though they’ve jumped the shark. It’s not the same without all that mental chess. Norman’s story now is way more interesting tbh
I agree and I feel the show has about 2 options going forward. Either, all of them will get killed while on the verge of freedom ( which would fit the nature of the show ), or there would be an all-out war with the demons. Either way I doubt that all of them could survive.
Well of course it will be beaten when it ends, the story keeps on escalating. When it does finally end, it was a good maybe 25-30+ years and will be very hard to beat. If a manga can beat it then I'll be looking forward to that as well.
@@btbwilkinson One Piece will end when Oda stops it, thus it'll be beat by time, superman and batman are pretty much indefinite since they get handed around different writers
Not in our lifetime at least. A series that can beat One Piece in sales would have to be as long as OP and get even higher sales. This is very unlikely to happen anytime soon.
note- minor spoilers for My Hero Academia below. I think it is worth noting that, in regards to the TOC data for the majority of 2018 My Hero Academia has been in one of it's somewhat transitional arcs. for those not in the know, there's something of a pattern with Horikoshi's writing, in that you'll see a 1-2-1 pattern of 'School-stuff' -'serious business' -'school stuff' occasionally with smaller arcs in between, Initial arcs-school USJ arc-Serious Sports Festival-School Stain Arc-Serious End of term exams-school Kidnap and rescue Arc- Serious License exams-School Overhaul arc-serious Culture Festival- (the majority of 2018 so far- School Endeavour Arc- Serious while this may sound monotonous, each alternating arc is a big shake up in terms of structure and tone, compared to the others of it's 'type' but there are some generally consistent themes, namely that most of the big sequences of hyped up events, naturally, happen in the 'serious business' arcs. with the series being in a stage with less of the big hype moments that have become something of its standard, it's natural that it wouldn't have the top billing. and we may see these figures balance out with My Hero Academia in a higher average placement by the end of the year. On a sidenote, wonderful video, and a BRILLIANT show of humility to admit to past mistakes and work on rectifying them. that takes balls and it shows a great deal of maturity that you're willing to strive for accuracy at the cost of ego.
While the structure you've stated is totally correct, I feel like people reading MHA have reached some sort of limit point; the story for many characters run in circles - Bakugou, despite being the most beloved character in the series, has been reused countless times in the same, unnerving confrontation with Deku - the villains feel rushed - Gentle is a failed student who tried to be a UA-cam sensation, Overhaul is the son of a failed yakuza who gets miserably defeated the first arc he's introduced in, and in the Pro Hero Arc we have... well, another Noumu - and Endeavor is hated by almost everyone who knows what it feels like to be abused or who knows people who were, making his redemption arc an insult to those readers The story in MHA feels incredibly stale, even if there have been major shake-ups in its world; unfortunately, its world has been barely explored, a thing that made the whole "Pro-Hero" arc feel totally unnecessary and underserved, at least for me. I don't care about Hero rankings if I don't know 70% of those heroes, 20% I don't care about and the 10% that is the top I hate. And things get worse when you decide to focus on 2 characters instead of building up more of them. The whole Hawks chapter was extremely poorly executed, with a double-triple crossing revealed in the span of 3 pages, made purely for shock value - which again would have had much more effect if the character involved was a character we knew and loved in the first place, and not a dude we've met 5 chapters ago. And if you read the last chapter you know that, as of right now, we've entered the forbidden and dangerous grounds of "dream sequence with my ancestor that reveals backstory and awakens my powers" that killed the third part of Naruto. Again, a chapter that felt totally unnecessary, since everything it had - except the last two pages - we knew already; every single panel was something we knew - All for One redistributed Quirks to enslave people to him, forced his brother, One for All, to accept a Quirk in order to break him, and so on - and there was no need to have Deku go through a forced awakening, especially since, just like in Naruto, if the main MC's quality is to work hard to obtain success, unlocking power from random dreams is the laziest writing device that robs said MC of the only positive quality they have I don't know, I feel like people are catching up to the fact that Horikoshi is not really good at writing worlds and an organic story, and they're starting to feel the repetitive nature of each arc. Oh, yeah, and the Endeavor debacle... oof. But hey, I'm a Dr. Stone fanboy, so I'm glad my boy Senku is showing the older kids how it's done
got to say I strongly disagree on most of your points. Bakugo's not going in circles, his confrontations with Deku are hardly that frequent, three major encounters throughout the series thus far and all with a logical throughline and a clear character arc displayed for Bakugo. 1st encounter, Deku loses the fight but wins the war, severely damaging Bakugo's pride and making him realise he won't just waltz into being a hero automatically the same way he stood out in grade school, second encounter was forced cooperation against All-Might, where we get more of Bakugo's backstory, motives and his ideology for what he considers a hero, with the statements of his ideology via flashback being reinforced by his actions in the present fight. it's about providing contrast between the two characters. third encounter is about demonstrating Deku's growth, the closing gap, and really elaborating on Bakugo's newfound sense of guilt. after that fight we've seen a far more reflective and calm Bakugo who seems to have a negative opinion on his former ideals, as stated in the brief remedial lessons for the license exam. So... you're just flat-out wrong on that one. but the other points you made are actually more subjective. Gentle is supposed to just be a side villain to demonstrate that 'villains' as they are branded aren't all evil, he's the subplot of that arc too, a sidestory for world building so it makes sense that he's not given that much focus. Overhaul is well-developed and is thus far regarded as one of the best villains in the series, while his active involvement is limited to his arc that's not necessarily a bad thing, he's a very good single-arc villain and, his indirect involvement will be MASSIVE, via Eri. he's essentially a more threatening edition of Dr. Gero from Dragonball. where the pieces he set in play go far beyond his own scope in the story. So I don't really see a problem with him. and the High-End Nomu was short-lived for a reason, he wasn't supposed to be a big developed threat. just an obstacle, the intent being to show up the new 'no 1.' hero which nearly succeeded. your problems with Hawks are nitpicks at best. yes he was just introduced, which is why it's effective to see him as a double agent,, we don't know much about him so we don't have to see his character get subverted in weird contrived ways. he's just as much a mystery to us as he is to the other characters, and revealing his double agent status while a touch odd, at least cut out the bullshit and gives us a clear potential plot set-up, whereas revealing it too late could have easily felt like an ass-pull or retcon. It's too soon to make any criticisms of the impact of that dream sequence as we have yet to even see its ramifications. so that's a moot point. you're projecting hard with that point about 'people are starting to see' No. YOU are starting to see problems, and that's fine, but the reception of recent chapters has been predominantly fine. and the Endeavour debacle was hyperbolised horseshit from the moment it began, Horikoshi's not saying that Endeavour's suddenly a good person, but that he had motives and there were reasons for the things he did, even if they didn't justify his actions, it's a fairly nuanced approach, that got shat on because there's a good subset of the audience whose heads implode when faced with complexity.
Peter Sanders Honestly this just reads like you never enjoyed My Hero that much in the first place. A lot of nikpicks and assuming the worst and the possibility of him "messing up", if not hoping for it. I will whatever, hope the story gets better for you. I'll be joining you on that Dr. Stone hype tho. The comments and the video both have gotten very intrigued and I love Eyeshield to this day, so I'm in.
Peter Sanders dude you have to give it time, these characters have learned more than most other shonen stories. It’s just the fanbase that only enjoys the fights are getting itchy because they need their fix. It’s always the same, it starts to slow down to build stuff up and they start saying hero aca is shit and then the fight happens and it’s the best again haha
Hopefully TPN’s anime adaptation is popular. It feels like Shirai is slowly setting up a grand plot as the cast of protagonists and villains grows. We’ve got the motivations of Isabella and the certain someone related to her which were briefly introduced in the first arc, lambda 7214, Peter Ratri, Andrew, the demon religion, the demon king, and the unexplored human civilisation. TPN is going to need all the popularity it can get if it wants to properly tell the lengthy story it’s shaping up to be. It’s going to be interesting to see how everything comes together.
Here hoping you make another recap video for 2019 man, I love your analysis on Jump and would love to see yearly recap-ish videos for the publication. Keep up the good work!
But thing about Dr.Stone is that the world concept isn't as broad as say something like One Piece so the show will most likely end before One Piece, meaning it might not ever be able to surpass it.
Yeah, I respect that you have been so open and honest that you were wrong. Plus, I think this is a great channel and your voice is so very calming, along with the conversations of anime are almost godly. Thanks man
It did my heart good to hear you mount praise on Dr. Stone, it is seriously my favorite of the new Shounen Jump manga right now - yes, even more than Promised Neverland and My Hero Academia, both while still good went through a kind of decline in my eyes after certain arcs. Here's hoping Dr. Stone gets more recognition after the anime adaptation!
Super Eyepatch Wolf: I screwed up and didn't do my research on the last video. *_shows photo of Go Nagai instead of Akira Toriyama_* ....2 steps forward and 1 step back I guess is still considered progress.
15:42 Personally I feel Togashi is always go to be this glaring exception for this issue, especially what I've seen from his work. However, yes, recycling ideas for action series makes them drag and series like Boruto I end up dropping due to it. Anyway, Dr. Stone and The Promised Neverland seem worth the time to check out.
The reason why things feel recycled and "stale" is because WE ARE GROWN UP NOW. Young ones watching these anime see these stories as fresh and legendary. We've been following Shonen for 20+ years. We've grown passed this sort of storytelling. My advice is to read/watch other types of anime like Seinen. It's the natural evolution to our interests.
no, it's not that you've grown past shonen, it's that 99% of the storytelling in shonen is focused at an age that will enjoy anything as long as it follows the same simple formula. shonen can be changed beyond that simple formula like hxh though.
I agree. But like the other guy said, certain shounen do try and change up the usual formula like erased, hxh, prison school, one punch man, mob psycho 100 and, (is parasyte a shounen?). It's very simple writing for the most part in most shounen because it's catering to a young teen audience although the shounen crowd is supposed to be between 14-18? But only certain shows push that age rating by tackling new, twisted and interesting plots. Like if I'm being honest shows like my hero academia is worse than what we previously had in naruto and etc. because it's tackling superheroes and we are quite familiar with that but they are doing it by targeting the younger crowd as compare to shows like static shock, green lantern animated series, batman & superman animated series, justice league that had a more adult like tone for people to enjoy with some real life relatability.
UGH massive correction, that was not a photo of Akira Toriyama that was Go Nagoi, no idea how that one got by me, huge thank you to everyone who pointed it out.

Dont forget demon slayer
I never see Taiju as a protagonist. It has always been Senku.
the story started off with him mostly, so i thought he was the protag at first, but im glad it ended up being Senku
Same. Taiju always seemed like a secondary character
Hyperversum im pretty sure Boichi has outright confirmed in an interview that Taiju was the mc but it was quickly switched to Senku a few chaps in ie The village arc
i guess its just up to who you think is the main protagonist

Dr. Stone is freaking stellar.
Beautiful art, great characters, interesting science based on reality (mostly), it's something that feels genuinely unique and brings a smile to my face every chapter
It started off slow, but the series has definitely found it's footing in "mad sciencer" Senku's crazy antics.
NicoB Hey NicoB what are you doing here? And you read Dr. Stone nice taste man.
Nice to see you here Nico :D
Ahhh it's Nico
First time I've seen you comment. hi :v
Hey Bizzle.
That can't be right. How do you explain the manga doing way better as it is now in the years where there was no anime yet?

I'm curious what aspects of a shounen you value, in which, for an example, FMA is better than One Piece?
jonamedhatten
Character development
Arc structure
Storytelling
Power scaling

Some of these are compiled in Color Walk Compendiums and some are compiled on the Arlong Park Forums Interview Thread.
not sure but i heard it first really exploded of popularity with the Drum Island arc because all the stuff with Chopper and the Cherry Blossom at the end really hit something with Japanese people.
it started gaining a lot of attention in 2015-16 when Naruto and Bleach were ended/ending

One Piece is OP tho, amazing world for sure.
C Vox ofcourse its not. Dr. Stkne came out in 2017 while MHA came out in 2014 and BC in 2015. The series has 2-3 years to catch up and it needs an anime adaptation
But its going in a great direction and its highly unique and the fighting is determined by science which is very different.
HxH feels more strategic than most Shounen which I’m thankful. One Piece has an amazing sense of adventure that is rivaled with DBZ for me. MHA feels like Japan’s answer to Marvel Comics.

yeah i know it's one of my favorites....honestly i even like it even more than PNL

Hi Justin! :D
Dammit. I liked that one
that's sad, but maybe because i only read the first chapter, honestly this felt like the Indiana Jones of Manga. Guess it wasn't for this time.
Rabarbar you do realise you're saying that while in the comment section of a video about manga
I literally started reading Dr. Stone because of your mention in LFAB podcast and gotta say you introduced me a wonderful Friday where I can't wait for the new episode's translation to drop, and the praise the series gets from this video makes my day.
There is some really good discussions on the Dr. Stone subreddit, if you are interested in that kind of thing.
Aditionally, you may want to read everything else Boichi has been a part of if you like his artwork. Particulary "Sun-ken Rock" (that is complete) and "Origin".
I really hope the anime does justice for the Promised Neverland, the first arc is amazing imo.
You better because if it sucks,
How the hell do you have time to read manga
I enjoyed the first arc, but my interest defined went down as the arcs continued.
It’s all been amazing to me so far. I can’t wait.
PNL and Dr. Stone are amazing, I haven't been so invested in magna since Deadman Wonderland and Needless

How many pictures are there of toriyama? Like one or two right? Seriously how secretive is that guy? XD
Toriyama's been in live interviews, so he's not really secretive.
If he's like me then he probably doesn't care what any artist looks like in real life lol I read they shit could care less what they look like lol
Houmiii IKR, does it hurt much to double check the videos to see if there's any errors or mistakes
So glad to hear Promised Neverland is gaining popularity. Its a seriously thrilling series and I cannot wait for the anime to start.

1:05 that "just watch me" endeavor panel after saying" the result you're watching right now was dope
What's funny about this is Horikoshi respond to the backlash through chapter 192, which I find very clever.
EmmeKira exactly and Vegeta was a murderers genocidal maniac with his world most popular motherfucking characters in in manga/anime history.
Please never let Oda draw Goku again. That face is the stuff of nightmares.
Nicholas King that face is more scary than anything in junji ito
It was a message
Nicholas King 15:17 yeah.. I see why you say that
One Piece continues to be an incredible series. I hope they let Oda continue as long as he needs.
I'm currently on volume 10 and I'd like to ask is it worth reading to get to the current arc
@Remark the arc that I'm on now is the one where namis back story is revealed
@Remark I'm not saying I don't like it I'm just saying from his video of why you should watch/read one piece I just thought there would be more
@Remark that's great to here I'm sure I'm gonna love it
see the issue here is that its not necessarily how long they let oda continue, as much as how long his body and mind will let him continue.

Wow! I'd never heard about Dr. Stone before it looks so cool! I kinda want to go read it now. Thank you for making this.
A year late but. didja read it yet? :P I think it's a lot of fun
The Promised Neverland reminds of the popularity of Death Note how it really doesn't feel like your typical Shonen Jump series but does really well.
it lost its mojo once the first arc ended
Nah
I'd say it picks back up after the Goldy Pond arc. Granted, we only have like chapters of after that, but that chapter 100 though.
MHA is not flopping because of the adaptation, it's flopping because the source material is not as good as before
Manga were always published the same way, and how the adaptation is made does not affect that
how is MHA flopping ? This is just the page ranking, it's the most popular shonen right now and in terms of overall manga sales, it's number 3 right after One Piece and Haikyuu ?
golightly313 How is it fairly generic? Every one that's read MHA says that it improves upon the Shonen formal.
So basically Super Eyepatch Wolf had a good character development for understanding his earlier mistakes.
Edit: Which is a manly behaviour.
Kenshiro or Jotaro with a white bandana?
Lmao your name and profile pic 😂
Poor Momotaro

I like the designs of Kenshiro, Momo and Jotaro. And Momo is basically the less known and missing link in the evolution chain from Kenshiro to Jotaro. Plus they are the manly trinity of the 80's :)

The Annual State of Shonen Jump.
Dr. Stone's premise actually sounds amazing, that's actually one of the most creative things that I've ever heard, especially from shounen that has a bit of a problem with originality at times.
I actually liked the 1st video. Nice video dude. Also I'm interested about Dr. Stone and how it could change Shonen Jump. 💥

Ya'll need to read boichi other project too, like Sun Ken Rock, and also his other ongoing manga, Origin
I like the manga, but I feel like it's going to be better as an anime. So many sequences could be made more suspenseful or exciting with a soundtrack. I can't wait to see it.

Some people get called out on mistakes and get defensive and pissy about it - and then you Eyepatch Wolf who not only owns up to it but works with the main person correcting him to make something better! Fantastic work, my friend.

MHA is a good manga, yeah. But it can never be the future of anything at all. Not the magazine, and much less shonen in general. It just picks up the same old characters, histories plot and worldbuilding and does them better, it didnt come up with anything brand new, imaginative nor original

It's quite shocking to see how far Jujutsu Kaisen has come. 4:51
Yes, ty
Seven deadly sins ain’t nearly as popular here as it is in japan but does that take away from it being #3 on the recent list of top manga sales ?
still bc would not get axed right ??
The Promised Neverland and Dr Stone seem to be extremely interesting. Going to buy the first volumes. Haven’t read any manga in like 7 years and been needing someone to show me something intriguing and new.

That My Hero standing had me seriously shocked
TOC Rankings are based more on newer series than older series.
why? My Hero has been massively popular for a while
or do you mean the first half of 2018 instead of the yearly average?
since overhaul arc. MHA become more generic than ever
kaki langit idk I thought the lasr arc was epic
Honestly I think the Endeavor stuff in MHA recently has been the best story content for a while.
The Yakuza Arc felt kinda unfocused, and spent a bunch of time building up one time new characters rather than expanding on ones we already had
And the culture festival took what should have been time developing class1-A and made it all about Deku fighting a one off villain....again.
Peter Sanders
I highly disagree with what you said, complaining about "just another Nomu" is pitty, it was meant to make a point in the story giving more speculations to the mistery of the Nomus, (specially with being a very special one and what it meant for Endeavor hero career and character) Why you said that about Hawks? we clearly know his motivations, beliefs and make a strong point of views in the world of heroes with various nuances and still there are mysteries about him, id say with the short time the dude has appeared plus is interactions has already become in a fleshed out character who still has a lot to show.

One piece is unbeatable
It'll eventually get beaten by the passage if time
Well of course it will be beaten when it ends, the story keeps on escalating. When it does finally end, it was a good maybe 25-30+ years and will be very hard to beat. If a manga can beat it then I'll be looking forward to that as well.
@@paulofkintyre8348 it really might not. It is going to pass Batman this or next year, and is going to pass Superman within five at current pace.
I think it is worth noting that, in regards to the TOC data for the majority of 2018 My Hero Academia has been in one of it's somewhat transitional arcs.
for those not in the know, there's something of a pattern with Horikoshi's writing, in that you'll see a 1-2-1 pattern of 'School-stuff' -'serious business' -'school stuff' occasionally with smaller arcs in between,
Initial arcs-school
USJ arc-Serious
Sports Festival-School
Stain Arc-Serious
End of term exams-school
Kidnap and rescue Arc- Serious
License exams-School
Overhaul arc-serious
Culture Festival- (the majority of 2018 so far- School
Endeavour Arc- Serious
while this may sound monotonous, each alternating arc is a big shake up in terms of structure and tone, compared to the others of it's 'type' but there are some generally consistent themes, namely that most of the big sequences of hyped up events, naturally, happen in the 'serious business' arcs.
with the series being in a stage with less of the big hype moments that have become something of its standard, it's natural that it wouldn't have the top billing. and we may see these figures balance out with My Hero Academia in a higher average placement by the end of the year.
On a sidenote, wonderful video, and a BRILLIANT show of humility to admit to past mistakes and work on rectifying them. that takes balls and it shows a great deal of maturity that you're willing to strive for accuracy at the cost of ego.
While the structure you've stated is totally correct, I feel like people reading MHA have reached some sort of limit point; the story for many characters run in circles - Bakugou, despite being the most beloved character in the series, has been reused countless times in the same, unnerving confrontation with Deku - the villains feel rushed - Gentle is a failed student who tried to be a UA-cam sensation, Overhaul is the son of a failed yakuza who gets miserably defeated the first arc he's introduced in, and in the Pro Hero Arc we have... well, another Noumu - and Endeavor is hated by almost everyone who knows what it feels like to be abused or who knows people who were, making his redemption arc an insult to those readers
The story in MHA feels incredibly stale, even if there have been major shake-ups in its world; unfortunately, its world has been barely explored, a thing that made the whole "Pro-Hero" arc feel totally unnecessary and underserved, at least for me.
Again, a chapter that felt totally unnecessary, since everything it had - except the last two pages - we knew already; every single panel was something we knew - All for One redistributed Quirks to enslave people to him, forced his brother, One for All, to accept a Quirk in order to break him, and so on - and there was no need to have Deku go through a forced awakening, especially since, just like in Naruto, if the main MC's quality is to work hard to obtain success, unlocking power from random dreams is the laziest writing device that robs said MC of the only positive quality they have
I don't know, I feel like people are catching up to the fact that Horikoshi is not really good at writing worlds and an organic story, and they're starting to feel the repetitive nature of each arc.
The comments and the video both have gotten very intrigued and I love Eyeshield to this day, so I'm in.
that that to KID of all japan... they tired of your shit, Horiko.....
It’s going to be interesting to see how everything comes together.
im so excited to see how the anime adaptation turns out, i hope it can bring the popularity to the series that it deserves
Black Clover isn't under 2 years old, it's well over 3
Same goes for Kimetsu no yaiba and promised never land
Bram Ntawumenyumunsi wrong, BC latest chapter is 168, Kimetsu is 121 and Neverland is 98. Which means BC is over a year older than Neverland.
bastek66 obviously I mean that they are both older than 2 years old
Bram Ntawumenyumunsi I know right,I read black cover and in chapter 156 they cerebrated their third anniversary
Bro why are you in these comments too. The last video had you as top comment
Here hoping you make another recap video for 2019 man, I love your analysis on Jump and would love to see yearly recap-ish videos for the publication. Keep up the good work!
Damn One Piece is truly the king. Couldn't be happier.
ikr (:
But thing about Dr.Stone is that the world concept isn't as broad as say something like One Piece so the show will most likely end before One Piece, meaning it might not ever be able to surpass it.
Karim Hamid True!!!...
Lmao I love how this video predicted the rise of demon slayer so casually
And JJK
Yeah, I respect that you have been so open and honest that you were wrong. Plus, I think this is a great channel and your voice is so very calming, along with the conversations of anime are almost godly. Thanks man
That was not a picture of Toriyama
It was Go Nagai aka the creator of devilman and Cutie Huney.
Would you consider doing a similar video on "The Current State of Ultra Jump"?
My personal favorite to read each week.
1 -MHA
2- Dr Stone.
3- PNL

BeastKing

MHA IS TRASH. I'D SWITCH IT WITH BLACK CLOVER OR SOMETHING THAT IS NOT MHA
The Omniscient Sociopath good thing the op isn’t you
Swallowing pride and owning mistakes for the sake of accuracy and more knowledge. This is why I will always come back to your channel.
*_shows photo of Go Nagai instead of Akira Toriyama_*
....2 steps forward and 1 step back I guess is still considered progress.
The Dynast Queen lmao
The Dynast Queen i saw that and i was like wtf
It's more like fifteen steps forward one half-step backwards tbh. don't be nitpicking.
Lifesizemortal you must be pretty young huh :/
Lifesizemortal opinion..... Huh... Opinion?
Eh, even if it has the same formula, as long as it's done well it is enjoyable even if you've seen plenty of similar shows.
Well Hunter x Hunter's debut was in 1998 so it's 20 years old and broke the formula a long time ago and had 7 volumes before the year 2000.
