- USTA Mens Open Indoor Tournament. These are the highlights from my 2nd round. It was a good match so I made the highlights a bit longer than usual.
This was my 2nd match of the day. My first round was a tricky 7-5, 6-1 victory. In this match, we had a number of long deuce games and I began cramping midway through the 2nd set. I've never experienced cramping like this before.
Great video! My advice regarding the cramps, drink plenty of water two days prior to any tournaments. I experience the worse cramps in my life last year during the summer. From then one, I drink a TON of water before and during all tournaments, and cramps are no longer an issue. I play in Arkansas, so summer time here can be brutal with 100+ degrees with a lot of humidity, so we are already sweating before even take the court. Again, great video, and great hitting!
Thanks, and will do. I'm hoping this was just a fluke.
@@skeet0rz for sure cause they suck esp during middle of a match. but keep up the good work with tennis and your videos.
I play about the same level than this guy and I also had already several times cramps during tournaments... not only drinking water is the key... mostly it's due to not enough training or fitness.. I used to train just a few times with friends and used my first tournaments as kinda of a training which is not good, but many elder players do this as they dont have much time due to family and/or work.. and if you still play in the highest level your body can be tested to the limit so you definitely know what you didn't train on... I got mostly my calf muscle, or my quadriceps in cramp... I even got my finger once cramped and couldnt get it of my racket almost... also after a very demanding 3 set match... sometimes stress can also be a part of it... now I play more relaxed as I get older and I rarely have cramp
Glad to see another good quality match play video from ya! Sad to see the cramps. I've never cramped playing tennis until I turned 30. Now, even when I play doubles, I would cramp if I didn't prep. As many others have mentioned, we should start prepping in advance. I don't have the disciple to prep 2 days in advance though...the day before is the best I've been able to do and it's been good enough. I've been told to drink lots of fluids but not just water. Drinking only water will dilute your fluids of the salts and electrolytes you'll need...which could lead to cramps as well. I drink soups and eat soup noodles the night before. This gets me my carbs and my fluids with "salts". Right before the match, I start sipping on Pedialyte and water. I continue this throughout the match. Low Sodium V8 vegetable juice works for me too. My Dr. Opponent gave me that when I cramped for the first time ever during a match. Anyways, I don't know if my routine is even a good idea but i know it has worked for me. Good Luck and Keep playing and posting!!! -Br.
Chicken noodle soup is a neat idea, ill give that a shot. I also think that just casually drinking pedialyte in the days leading up is a good idea too. For the past few years I've used a product called "Lyte Show" (search for it on amazon). It's basically concentrated salt water than you put a few drops into your drink, and it's always worked well for me. On this day however, I guess it wasn't enough. I'm hoping this day was just a 1-time fluke.
@@skeet0rz Interesting tidbit. Without naming names, my boss grew up knowing and playing with a current top pro player from Asia. He says, many of them (Asian pros) eats some sort of Ramen (in addition to their other prep) the night before. so now when i eat Ramen, i feel like im a pro, lol! Interesting product, Lyte Show. A little pricey for me as a weekend hacker though. I can get "pedialyte" from the dollar store for a $1.08, lol.
Where from?? Great video. Cramping made you dangerous.
Boston area.
@@skeet0rz good ball. If I'm up that way this summer I'll set up a match. Which I should be. 5.0 player here working on getting back to Open level after ruptured patella tendon a yr ago. Im good to go just getting used to making every ball have that intent again instead of playing on back foot and reacting.
Excellent video!
Maaannn… I thoroughly enjoyed this. Loved your drive volley @ 10:30 which led to you winning the point. Out of interest and curiosity, what's your tennis background? When did you start playing and did you play high School, college, self taught etc? Thanks for posting.
Thanks, means a lot to me. I think this was one of the highest quality matches I played this year. I'm glad I could share it.
I played varsity highschool tennis for 4 years as a singles player. I was going to play at my state college but the varsity team got cut the year I got there. I ended up just playing club team tennis for a few years.
Once I hit my late 20's, something for some reason clicked in my head, and I started playing A LOT more. I'm much better now at 34 than I ever was in my early 20s. I'm a late bloomer I suppose.
Hey skeet0rz. Great match, bud! Unfortunately, you had some bad luck with cramp issue, but you played like a warrior. You never gave up, you kept your composure and fought on. Your footwork has improved significantly, you looked a lot lighter on your feet. You were hitting the ball very cleanly with great depth and direction from both wings. Your backhand looked like a weapon. If it hadn't been for the cramps, I think you would've won your match. Your opponent was a hell of a player. Keep posting and keep up the good work!
Thanks! I agree that I thought I looked lighter on my feet than usual. I hope it wasnt an optical illusion from the black shoes! :-)
the guy with no hat, has no strategy at all!
Great tennis! You are a great player, what NTRP level are you? After I saw the video I thought you had won, your tennis is very agresive and consistent, but your opponent is fast, move like a hell and return everything from any position...it´s been a great, great match! If you could set the camera behind the court at higher level it would be perfect. You can see some video from iRacer3 chanel, his camera placement is perfect. Keep it up!
Thanks. I agree with you on all counts. The camera is in the corner here because it's on a tripod and it would be in the way at the middle of the back of the court.
Man, I wish I can play like you. Still have to improve my groundstrokes and serves, let along strategy, point play, recovering shots, slices... oh man. And I only have 2 times a week to work on those stuff.. someone help me...
Lol I can feel the anxiety 😂. Everyone wants to be better, even the pros
Love your vids. Do your opponents ever find it weird with the camera there?
I always ask for permission first. It's a small gopro that is barely even noticeable.
skeet0rz nice . How long does it take you to mount? Just curious I’m thinking of doing it also .
@@JoePerdue Its an old gopro 3. I have to connect to it (via WIFI) to see the preview. Once I use the phone preview to get it framed properly, I turn the WIFI off to save battery and let it record. I have an extra-large battery that I bought off amazon a while ago so it can continuously record an entire match pretty easily.
You're playing at a nice level here! Were you experiencing nerves or just a physical match? He looked like a good counterpuncher/grinder.
It was muscle cramping. My left calf and right groin, in particular, would just lock up randomly and suddenly.
What racket do you use?
Babolat pure drive tour plus
should have won this one quite easy, perhaps because it was your second match.. this guy is a real pusher, nothing special..
I would disagree. Perhaps something is lost in the highlights, since I generally only show winners & forced errors. However, this player moves exceptionally well, and even though he wasn't hitting too many outright winners, he did a great job of keeping the ball out of my strikezone. He rarely left anything short and in the middle of the court. I think once he saw I was cramping he, started getting to be more "pushy" which actually didn't serve him that well. You can see towards the end that I was tee'ing more than I had prior to that point.
