Having seen a depressing number of people complain about Rolen's selection along the lines of "he was just a good player, not a HOF'er." This arises, I think, for two reasons. One, he just wasn't especially famous. He is something of a steady, plodding Midwesterner with little flash. Second and more substantively, his excellence was spread out across several areas, really every area of baseball, rather than being concentrated on one or two. He hit for average, but only occasionally hit 300. He hit for power, but not home run crown power. He drew walks. He was a tremendous fielder, but lacked the flash of a Brooks Robinson. He was a fine baserunner, but not blazingly fast. So, he was helping his teams win in every way possible, but generally didn't do the most of anything. This amounts to an enormous amount of value (hence his high WAR total), but a statistical profile that doesn't jump out to more causal fans as anything special. Until recently, players like this (Bobby Grich, Dwight Evans, Lou Whitaker are other examples) haven't sniffed the HOF even though they did more to help their teams win than many that did. Rolen getting in reflects a better understanding of what contributes to winning baseball games. It is too bad when those stuck in old ways of thinking try to diminish this.
I'll also never understand why people make such a fuss over it. If it legitimately bothers em that much, i say go build your own damn Hall of Fame then. Or don't go visit the Hall of Fame. Do they think with enough complaints they'll remove him? Folk need to get over it. Are there better players left out? Sure, and we can argue till the cows come home about why they get left out. Truth is Rolen was a great ballplayer at multiple facets of the game like you said, for a position that is largely underrepresented
He was a first ballot choice for me. He made plays that rivaled Brooks, and on a daily basis!
And like you summed up, he was 5-tool, at its finest. He was really dangerous to the opponent, because they could rarely predict what he’d do.
You guys are so right. I'm surprised that he wasn't a first ballot HOFer. He had unbelievable stats. Thank you both showing me that he deserves this honor.
I'll say it again. Congratulations to both scott rolen and Fred mcgriff on being officially being inducted into Cooperstown. Both are well deserved. And damn. Scott rolen hof speech was a powerful one. Wow.
Absolutely awesome speech! You are an inspiration!
Yeah speech was good but border line hall of fame. Over rated about one of only 3 3rd basemen with 300 Homer's 8 golds and 100 stolen bases. I seen all these amazing 3rd basemen play Brett..Brooks.. Schmidt and Buddy Bell.. just bc Rolen stole more bases doesn't make him top 3. My opinion being a Cards fan he is not in my top 5.
@@bobcat4462 what a jag@$$ comment. Not needed here at all.
From the heart. Family is everything...from the beginning and the molding of a young person into the adult they will be. Well done Scott. Well done.
Great speech, love this guy and well deserved induction. Good upbringing, good player, good guy.
Man people bashing Scott, he is a HOF, 8 gold gloves, 7 time all star, Rookie of the Year, 1 of only 3 3rd basemen with 300 homers, 500 doubles, and 100 stolen bases. Has a WAR over 70 (which is the same as Jeter) and not a roid guy. Also a HOF person. Im not even a cards or phillies fan (met fan) and always thought he was a great player.
Scott deserves in (I'm from Cincinnati) but it's a complete joke that he's in and Mattingly and Murphy are not
Oohhh 100 stolen bases
@@yerocelgo he's got 118 more than you or I do.
@@MarvinMonroethe thing that helped Rolen is that offensively among third basemen he ranks top 10 or top 12 all time and defensively he is easily top 5 all time. He ranks highly on a premier position like 3rd baseman.
Wish his time in Philly didn’t end so poorly. I loved rolen growing up. Watched him in the minors and at the greatest stadium of all time - the vet. Miss hearing harry kalas calling his name.
Great Speech thanks for your time with The Cincinnati Reds
Top player and a great person
Amazing speech . Thanks Scott, you inspired whoever listened to this!!
I got to meet Scott and get his autograph when he was inducted into the Phillies and minor league hall of fame years ago with his buddy Danny Held. So happy for him :)
The only autograph I ever got, at veterans stadium too. Thanks scott!
Congratulations
Classy, deserving player. One of the greatest to man the position⚾💙
Rolen was a solid player, as a Dodger fan I didn't get to see him as much. But I do remember that he could play D like no other. Congratulations!!!
non-HOFer and 2nd baseman Jeff Kent had 100+ RBI 6 yrs in row, and 8 overall.
compare it to NY cleanup hitter Mickey Mantles record of 4 in 18 seasons.. crazy
I started with Philadelphia........St Louis is a wonderful city and I made it to two world series. It's one big family......PFFFT!
He said a lot of nice things about Philly too.
Scott was a beast at 3rd with the glove,I thought he be Cards best defensive 3rd baseman of all time but then Nolan got traded and Nolan is such a stud that he easily trump's a hall of famer glove
Top 3 Greatest 3rd baseman of All time and power to match the Glove STL Loves you Forever!!!!!!!!
HOFer Rolen was 4th in MVP one time in 17 yrs....
but he did hit over 31 HRs one time too!
Mike Schmidt, George Brett, Brooks Robinson, Eddie Matthews, Wade Boggs, Chipper Jones and Adrian Beltre are all ahead of Scott Rolen. Probably a few others I'm forgetting about, too.
I agree but I will say Arenado looks to be HOF bound if he stays healthy but yeah me Rolen in HOF idk love but not enough I feel.
Classy dude. Always has been.
Demanding a trade because he wasn’t mentally tough enough to play in Philly and play out the contract he signed? Not classy in my book
@@volodymyrzablotsky5372 To be fair, Philly is a pretty terrible place.
Ever since fans threw batteries at JD Drew, I've only been able to think negatively about the fan base.
@@blessd24Well come out to Philly and we'll show you.
Rolen was a miserable sour puss here.
He simply couldn't handle it.
Ask Bryce Harper what he thinks of us.
Congrats to Scott his hat may forever be hung with the greats❤
Great speech.
9:35 to 10:10 says a lot! Scotty Role has always been one of my favorite Cardinals!!
Rob is a joke. Let's get a real commissioner who is a passionate baseball guy! Congratulations Scott Rolen. Thank you for all you did for the Cardinals!❤
Indiana should definitely be proud of Scott. Good dude.
This induction really shouldn't be this controversial. 8 Gold Gloves, 7 All Star Games, ROTY Award, and a World Series Ring.
Rolen's WAR is only 8.3 behind Brooks Robinson, and Rolen played 6 less seasons, some of which were shorter due to injuries. He also got to 300 HRs WAY faster than George Brett, has a higher career BA than Robinson, Mike Schmidt, Eddie Mathews and Ron Santo, and a higher career OPS than Robinson, Santo, Adrian Beltre, and Paul Molitor.
How is this induction controversial again?
Because he wasn’t a “Home Runs Go BRRRRR” type of ballplayer. Sadly a narrow mindset that the vast majority of post-steroid-era fans have.
Because newer fans think home runs are the only thing that matters. Rolen was definitely the best defensive third baseman of his generation so it bugs me that people think he shouldn’t be in
I am biased, because Scott Rolen was my favorite player growing up. I was devestated when he was traded to St. Louis. But I was lucky enough to be here in-person to see his speech. He is a pro, on and off the diamond.
I remember him hitting a good amount of home runs in my youth, but I forgot about how great of a defensive player he was. Especially for being such a big dude. He took pride in his defense, and it shows in the highlights.
The other thing I think people sometimes forget is how a player's performance in the postseason should factor in. His overall numbers aren't too impressive, to be honest. But in the 2006 World Series, where the Cardinals won, he batted .421 with a OPS of 1.213.
Him and McGriff getting in should not be controversial. But I guess baseball fans will always debate this.
Has the same War as Jeter, who is the epitome of NY bias. Bad fielder and just a contact hitter who benefited from being on some of the best teams of all time
Great speech!!
McGriff should’ve been inducted years ago. Scott was such a underrated player. His stats were solid but his defense will never be matched
All these “experts” that throw shade on Scott’s career. Scott has the 3rd highest WAR average over a 162 game for a 3rd baseman. Ever. Only he and Mike Schmidt have at least 8 gold gloves and over 300 home runs. Scott’s enshrinement on the Hall is well deserved.
Umm Arenado 10 golds and over 300 blows Rolen out of the water and he ain't done yet. That is coming from a cardinal fan
@@bobcat4462 True. I’m also a Cardinal fan living in STL, and Nolan will easily be a first ballot hall of Famer. Heck, if he retired today, he’d still be in the HOF. The point I stress is that Scott is also deserving to be there.
@@bobcat4462 blows Rolen out of the water? Arenado is 32 and has 53.8 career fWAR. Still has ways to go to reach Rolen's 70 and certainly isn't going to blow Rolen out of the water.
Umm okay learn the game bc he is far better than Rolen. I watched both many times is person.
WAR is a fake stat for math nerds. Watch the game kiddo.
Looks like your Mini Me!
its a backwards world when rolen is in hall, but guys like sheffeild and rose are not
Lance Berkman deserves better! I know his peers on that stage agree including Scott Rolen
My Biggest Compliment too Scott Rolen is, I hated to see him come up to the damn plate in the bottom of the Ninth! I knew he would do something terrible to my Braves!!!
I love Scott (I'm from Reds country) and definitely think he and Fred deserve to be in the HoF.
Also his daughter is super pretty
But it's a complete joke that Scott Rolen is in the Hall of Fame but Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy are not
Nice
Defense is under valued
One hundred percent especially with the newer fans it truly is a shame that they only think home runs matter
Why is he a HOF’er?
Barry Bonds
Tell me he didn't juice😂😂😂
Adrian Beltre is better than Scott Rolen
And, he’ll be in the HOF, so what’s your point?
Yep he will
Adrian will be there once he is eligible. Scott has a ring. Your comment is meaningless.
@JR-vi4rl who's comment looks like everyone agreed on that Lol. He'll yeah he was better than Rolen great player.
And he will be in the hall of fame he just isn’t eligible yet dude
Not a HOF'er
Stop. Scott Rolen is a more than deserving hall of famer
NOT A HALL OF FAMER! THERE ITS BEEN TRANSLATED!
Sorry…this dude is far from a hall of famer. Good player…that is all. But congrats I guess.
Good players just not HOF’ERS. Biggio & Bagwell, same. Cooperstown going mediocre just like everything else.
Bro Biggio has 3000 hits, he’s absolutely deserving. What are you, a salty Braves fan?
Schilling got robbed again!
Does not belong!!!!!!!
Agreed!!!!!!
he does belong statwise but his many hateful alienating comments has just left him without anyone willing to vote for him and as much as the fans try to make the hall seem like its dependent on talent its always been a popularity contest
It's still a complete joke that Rolen is in but Mattingly and Murphy are not
I love Murph and Donnie Baseball.
Nope.
Hall of very good.
Not deserving in my opinion, good player but not a Hall of Fame career
I mean, experts in their fields voted him in due to his dominance at the hot corner soo....
@@_Nvrse.Almighty I understand what you are saying but based on his stats and overall career I personally don't think it measured up to the level of Hall of Fame. Once again just my opinion
@@scottmignone5664 We can say that about ALOT of people in the HOF though..
Exactly the same WAR as Gary Carter. More WAR than Tony Gwynn, Jim Palmer and Pudge Rodriguez.
@@_Nvrse.Almighty With Harold Baines' HOF induction..this will become the new normal
Least deserving guy in awhile.
🩸 *PHILLIES*
HOFer Rolen was 4th in MVP one time in 17 yrs....
but he did hit over 31 HRs one time too!
making every player today HOF worthy huh
Scott Rolen belongs in hall of very good for sure
He played 17 years and was voted in the top 10 of MVP once....he NEVER led the league in ANYTHING
Scott who!
Lmao exactly
one superpseudostar in my eyes... and I saw him play the entire time. ...
oh well, no one will complain about Aparicio Sandberg Santo Fox Smith etc. anymore
HOFer Rolen was 4th in MVP one time in 17 yrs....
but he did hit over 31 HRs one time too!
non HOFer MannyR had a career OPS of 1.000 lol... crazy kine

HOFer Rolen was 4th in MVP one time in 17 yrs....
but he did hit over 31 HRs one time too! superpseudostar
Roids
The MLB HOF has no legitimacy until Pete Roses is enshrined!
Shouldn’t have bet on baseball then🤷♂️ If you break rules of that magnitude, there are consequences
@@Chiefs767 ...Roberto Alomar is in the HOF and he beat his wife and threatened to kill her. He also exposed several women to his HIV (and paid settlements for it). Alomar also sexually assaulted a woman... he's still in the joke of a HOF.
And Barry Bonds. They basically are saying my ENTIRE GENERATION of baseball fans dont matter never happened
Lol okay Billy
The hall will always be legit because I refuse to disrespect the hall of famers that are in there now but ya it is missing a few names one of them Barry bonds
Pete Rose. Mark McGuire. Barry Bonds. Oh, but Scott Rolen gets in!?
Baseball hall of fame is a disgrace
Sure, Rolen deserves it imo but it's a complete joke that he's in and Mattingly and Murphy are not
2,077 Hits!!!!!!
and one time had over 160 Hits in a Season!!! Awesome!
intentionally walked 57 times in career,... isn't that like 2nd to Bonds???
