Number one rule for retail outlets is accessibility - and this mall is not near any MRT. That being said, this is better than run of the mill malls we see all over Singapore - the same coffee and toast, bakery, supermarkets, clothing stores. I might visit it and see for myself.
I think it's meant for 'exclusivity'. It's really meant for those rich expats and having own car / chauffeur. Not really for locals that travel via public transport.
@mewletter if it's a,good place to shop it doesn't matter. Afterall Singaporean only go after branded stuff and ofcause they follow trend. U see people always go orchard road even tho it's expensive hahaha
one the one hand it's very singaporean to complain and have the last say on the other hand it's also very singaporean to move on very quickly. if it's not for you then dont go? and like you say, that being said, i too will go and have a look. why go kovan mall and insist it's for everyone? to me that's the same logic
@@mewletterit really isn't that deep you make it sound like its an hour walk away when you can get there in around 15mins from the mrt station just by walking. also what wasn't mentioned is that there are also buses that actually reach the area, so what's that about it not being meant for people who can only take public transport? i can name you malls that aren't 'atas' or meant for expats that are about the same distance away from an mrt station.
Honestly with the location smack in the middle of River Valley and with no public transport in sight (even the bus stops are a bit of a hike), it makes sense that their target audience are the richer people in sg. Local businesses that aren't hawkers are going to be a bit more pricey than corporations, which is probably why this place was curated as such, as a central place for people who would really really be willing to spend. After all it has less of a feeling of your typical mall and more of just a bunch of shops, a bit like a bigger more permanent version of your fairs and conventions. Personally am not their target audience by a long shot LMAO but I've seen it get pretty crowded when I've gone with some friends to window shop
Loving this content - so humorous from the outset. Thanks for spreading joy and helping us to explore Singapore, Ghib-Ojisan! Stuck at home and ill, but travelling through your videos :)
It seems Singapore's definition of atas is exclusive brands in a 'mall' with no aircon (and proper shelter) outside 😂 Dempsey Hill & Gillman Barracks probably can confirm that
This video is very timely for me as I am on leave and was wondering whether I should visit. Your comprehensive review has convinced me that it's not worth the visit. I agree it reminds me of Dempsey Hill, more for atas enjoyment, but for someone like me who enjoys heartland malls, I'll give it a miss. 😬 安い娯楽がいいなぁ。
You could’ve eat at a Mexican restaurant called Huevos in that mall. Their tacos and quesadillas are INCREDIBLY delicious. I ate there twice, you should definitely give it a try.
The vibes were good. But it’s not the everyday price one would expect. Actually , if we’re to promote Singapore brands , I think more has to be done especially the price tag unless we are talking about niche market. Maybe the rent is high. Then it would not be a suitable place for Singapore start up brands. But that place to chill, it’s ok.
Once the novelty wears out, it'll be just like the Turf Club, another white elephant. How to support local brands that are so expensive? I'd rather support our hawkers.
Hi Ghib san, Thanks for introducing a new mall, cool but I don’t think come to there😓not fit my style. I like old fashioned mall 😊 Good for finding Singapore brand👍
This place is in the neighborhood of Md Sultan, Robertson Quay. Surroundings are all high value residences. The right mind upon examining the location would have the "won't be cheap" in mind. Like, we won't go Dempsey to find hawker priced food.
Coconut Club nasi lemak cost me $30 and it is so difficult to eat the chicken with just the fork & spoon. I really laughed at your honest "atas" opinion in this post. Cheers.
My friend wanted to check it out but it rained heavily the day we plan to go (we don't have car). Damm everything is so atas there, nvm not interested in going anymore 😂
It is in River Valley, an atas area ! Local brands BTW not necessarily expensive. New Bahru was a girl high school. However, it has a mixed primary school.
I' have went to this "mall" for some "appointment" previously. Not to even mention the expensive price there, it is very hot, no air con, very stuffy like poor ventilation, cramps of the car pedestrians way, and also 16 mins away from the MRT / not very accessible for those without own transport. The location and the lack of public transport obviously hint the target audience, definitely not worth to visit if you are not prepare to spent, you will be only wasting your time, treat it like a small hike LOLOL (OH YES there're quite a lot of uphill too if you are travelling from the MRT)
Really weird to see 'atas' shops selling over-priced everything in a cheapskate old architecture of a former school, and oh you even have to walk up stairs to go to upper levels. Being far away from MRT etc ensures that only car owners are welcome.
Find it funny how the mall is called New New (also don't understand why they rather use bahru instead of another word since as a malay myself reading it makes me scratch my head xD) but the mall looks interesting, reminded me of those shophouses at jurong east beside the ol' jcube
Probably doomed from the get-go. Shops probably going to be revolving door and you'll see many names change in a short period when the shops can't tahan the rent and overheads because there's going to be a limited number of people who will spend money there frequently. Then next phase there will be many empty units and then snowball downhill from there. Kinda like Turf City before they had to close. GG.
Then new shopping mall is at puggol coast in singapore in the purple line it is at puggol the lrt St tectee the new mall with a lot of thing that open in 10th of December ❤
GHIB OJISAN, good morning 🌅 to your from Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR. How do you know about these new places, whether they are shopping 🛍️ malls, or new hawker centres, or new HDB Flats ?
Actually, I only saw mainly Singaporeans there (which is honestly quite nice)... lol~ And it's refreshing to see a mall where most service staff and boutiques are run by Singaporeans. Love the local indie brands!!
New Bahru is the embodiment of Chai Tea. Why say new twice lol. But I personally haven't been but will be interested to take a look before giving my opinion.
i mean there are alot of rich and atas people now in Singapore.....Singapore is not for Singaporeans anymore, no offense....Singapore is for everyone. $24 for a burger, and here i was thinking 5 guys in Singapore is getting ridiculous nowadays.
I don’t mind supporting local brands but the offerings are so limited.. plant store, clothes store, book store… I’m too lazy to go explore with so little to offer (and I’ve already seen the directory of shops)
Having to spend that much on stuff is crazy... but as singapore brands and having exceotionally premium products its kind of expected... sigh. Tho having atas things really is the whole motive of this mall - mostly for rich ppl to go and enjoy themselves
Funneh location Though I guess its not the only one The layout is uhhh definitely something curious Probably not for me although its understandable Surprised at the big crowds although maybe the place is just kinda small?
After seeing the comments, i think it is safe to say that those that rate it 1* really should just suck it up. I mean, these shops help the economy grow, especially if they are frequented by people with money. Did they ask us to buy? I mean, if you bought something expensive because it was expensive, can you really blame them? Its a concept, just like MBS, it isnt cheap there either, but why dont you also rate it 1*? Why is it so frequently frequented by people even if we cannot afford it? Cos we DONT HAVE TO SPEND MONEY TO ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE OF WALKING AROUND
Because there are those around who can afford the things there, and they feel excluded because they can't. People don't like feeling excluded, even if they aren't the target demographic. It's just egocentrism in a wrapper.
I want to thumbs this up more than once. There are so many “affordable” malls as it is in the heartlands - why does every single new launch need to cater the same demographic? There’s no fun to anyone’s head forcing you to buy anything or entrance fee for being there. People need to chill.
within 2 years i can gurantee all the shops will be gone or close down once the lease is up.parking must be easy and should be near bus stop .If there`s no bus stop what`s the point of people visting the mall.
To the OP, the crowd soured her experience thus meriting the solitary star - whether or not she expected it is immaterial. Such ratings are inherently subjective. At least she pointed out the weekend crowd situation for those of us who, like her, abhors crowds. You can always choose to rate it five stars *despite* the crowd if that adds to your experience.
Hi Ghib wah a new mall its always nice to visit but location cyoto mendokusai ne,, oh yah Ghib,, お酒 今日 来た よ.嬉しい..😅 正月 の時 乾杯 します😅.Have a nice Xmas n a Happy New Year Ghib N Family,, 🎄🍾🍺👍🎊🎉😎
the restaurants downstairs are good, i would visit again just to dine. The retail upstairs are boring. i wouldn't be surprised if they start closing after some time.
it's not really a small, been there once, very small, cute and with pretty good restaurants but too small and aren't that many shops, also pricy things, like over $100 plant lol cute boutiques but pricy stuff, the problem tho is really not enough shops to look at lol, I might go back tho, like maybe 6M-12M later. cute place, too far and too little

wtf are u talking about i dont get it
This is like one of those places I would explore but won't buy anything due to how expensive everything is
This is a concept mall, focused on independent brand from local
From the prices you can tell that the cost of doing business in sg is extremely high now! Especially for small businesses.
Rental cost is darn high. $10k a month for a hawker store on average in a coffeeshop.
Honestly with the location smack in the middle of River Valley and with no public transport in sight (even the bus stops are a bit of a hike), it makes sense that their target audience are the richer people in sg. Whenever I hear "local brand" in Singapore,it just screams expensive.
Ikr, the only thing I think off is the rent is crazy expensive
Exactly! My wallet don't allow me to support local brands much.
Loving this content - so humorous from the outset. Thanks for spreading joy and helping us to explore Singapore, Ghib-Ojisan! Stuck at home and ill, but travelling through your videos :)
Get well soon! Hope the videos are making your day a little brighter!
@@GhibOjisan Thank you so much! They definitely are!! 😃
The name reminds me of "Chai tea" joke in "Into the Multiverse".
Both words have the same meaning. They're essentially "New New"
It seems Singapore's definition of atas is exclusive brands in a 'mall' with no aircon (and proper shelter) outside 😂
Dempsey Hill & Gillman Barracks probably can confirm that

Thanks for exposing the harsh reality of Singapore
You could’ve eat at a Mexican restaurant called Huevos in that mall. Their tacos and quesadillas are INCREDIBLY delicious. I ate there twice, you should definitely give it a try.
Butterburgers are common here in Wisconsin, America's dairy state, known for the best cheese in the US. Funny to see it make its way to SG!

Atas here, atas there, atas everywhere. 😂
Once the novelty wears out, it'll be just like the Turf Club, another white elephant. How to support local brands that are so expensive? I'd rather support our hawkers.
i used to study here !! Nan Chiau High 90s moved to Sengkang in 2000s .. so many memories..
prime location
Would rather go to a hawker centre for a delicious plate of chicken rice than here.. 😬🫤

Definitely the more accessible or walkable Dempsey 👍.
Basically Ghib san is been very Japanese with his video.
But deep down. He may be Saying “ここはひどい場所です、来ないでください”
ghib san go there when they have pop up events! it gets more fun! its a nice hangout/chill place in my opinion
My friend wanted to check it out but it rained heavily the day we plan to go (we don't have car). Damm everything is so atas there, nvm not interested in going anymore 😂
This mall sit in a atas neighbourhood, catering for the nearby rich condo.
Rixh pple not stupid for carrot act
Need to get more beer uncles n aunties to go there n sing karaoke to devalue the place 🤣🤣🤣 also get Value to open there too
It is in River Valley, an atas area ! Local brands BTW not necessarily expensive. New Bahru was a girl high school. However, it has a mixed primary school.
The price is not just high. Is double
Breathing new life into abandoned schools is always welcome
Like CHIJMES
Majority here go jb eat on weekends ,good luck
Define ATAS
: butter instead of cheese.
For instance, in the 🍔
Thanks for showing us around
This is a refreshing mall concept! Refurbished from what used to be a school. Yes kinda has a dempsey vibe. Worth checking out 👍🏻👍🏻
Wow Singapore has so many interesting hidden places, which is so cool and interesting
Saw this Video & then decided to go to JB instead . That was a blast & the whole trip was $80
高校をモールにするって珍しい✨
品物は良さそうだけど私には高級でちょっと手が出ないですね💦
This is for rich people who want remain dress down to get groceries. They are tired of dressing up to go Orchard road for groceries.
Hi, you probably should have alighted at Great World or Fort Canning MRT Station.
Thanks alot, you have saved me alot of time from going there after I see all the prices you have displayed
I' have went to this "mall" for some "appointment" previously. Not to even mention the expensive price there, it is very hot, no air con, very stuffy like poor ventilation, cramps of the car pedestrians way, and also 16 mins away from the MRT / not very accessible for those without own transport.

Oh I went there on a typical hot day, spent my time enjoying the supermarket aircon 😅 Shops are interesting though! Feels very indie, designerish
Find it funny how the mall is called New New (also don't understand why they rather use bahru instead of another word since as a malay myself reading it makes me scratch my head xD) but the mall looks interesting, reminded me of those shophouses at jurong east beside the ol' jcube
I am still wondering whether the name is "New" and it puts the malay word "Bahru" there also to have a local feel. Or is it called "New Bahru"?
Ghib def our bro in same income bracket 😄
I think I can afford only a coffee there, just about. 😢
10 bucks for a Coffee? Who the hell do these people think they are? Does the Coffee cure cancer?
ah yes rent and wages surely do not exist surely the price of the coffee only includes the cost of the beans and water!
It’s technically the New New Mall
Probably doomed from the get-go. probably everything there on consignment la, local brands cant afford rent

Is not just expensive for Japanese, it is expensive for average Singaporeans too.
Really? Its quite cheap when i visited last week
@kkkkkkkb9945 Well even the video creator is saying that the price is above average. Maybe you didn't realize you are rich. 🤣
Artichoke is there own by one of the best chef in Spore

There is no ATM nearby.
ATA$ PLACE - Confirmed
Thanks Ghib.
New Bahru means new new 😁
As an Expat I am enjoying your content lot 😊.. ❤❤ eagerly scrolling to see weekly 😊 what topic you brings next ..
New Bahru is the embodiment of Chai Tea. Why say new twice lol. But I personally haven't been but will be interested to take a look before giving my opinion.
"Bao bun" makes me rage.
Timor leste as well
Don’t even know about the existence of this mall.

$24 for a burger, and here i was thinking 5 guys in Singapore is getting ridiculous nowadays.
Used to be the taxi academy office
'Atas' Singapore brands trying to overcharge Singaporeans as usual by claiming to be premium.
School ghost: wtf?
Thank you for sharing...The name intrigues me because because Bahru means NEW Thus New Bahru= New New .....Interesting.
I don’t mind supporting local brands but the offerings are so limited.. plant store, clothes store, book store… I’m too lazy to go explore with so little to offer (and I’ve already seen the directory of shops)
Young people can afford $10 coffee but can't afford $500,000 3 room flats.
Singapore brand made in China but sell in Europe price = Profit
Take a shot every time he mentions atas
Having to spend that much on stuff is crazy... but as singapore brands and having exceotionally premium products its kind of expected... sigh. Tho having atas things really is the whole motive of this mall - mostly for rich ppl to go and enjoy themselves

san shu gong is very good as well. Need to book in advance
Premises used to be a primary school.. More like having a bus service from either Fort Canning MRT or Great World MRT and walk over like 10mins plus
Ghib , if you think of getting stuff for your future babies , nearby chinatown above the hawker got a baby stuff shop price quite cheap.
Yeah Thanks ,my MIL also buys from there lol😆
Overhyped place. We left after half hr due to the weekend crowd and the humid weather made it difficult for us to explore further. Avoid weekends.
So you went shopping on a day where most people dont work and didnt expect a crowd? Hmmm interesting

Looks nothing like an atas place! Shabby looking and out of the way. Pass!
8:50 In ancient times, people used grass to feed cattle because it was free. Then they used grain and said it was good. Now its back to grass...
the burger you ate is considered one of the cheapest option there liao
People go to the mall.... Won't walk there.... They drive
I heard jokes from elders that they always mispronounced the school name to a hokkien profanity
I'll not go there for sure!
Closed down soon...
It’s kinda overrated and very hard to escape when it’s raining
Interesting
New bahru ..
Which basically means new new

New bahru is a tautology. Its very weird.
It funny the know singapore is one of the most expensive countries . You come here and except for cheap things.
Give it 2 years before it shuts down.
is not nice. the walkways are narrow and everything is curated to command premium prices
hi is it okay for future videos you can comment on whether the toilet has bidet/spray for the butt thanksssss
面白そう😊一度は行ってみたいです🎵
it's not really a small, been there once, very small, cute and with pretty good restaurants but too small and aren't that many shops, also pricy things, like over $100 plant lol cute boutiques but pricy stuff, the problem tho is really not enough shops to look at lol, I might go back tho, like maybe 6M-12M later. cute place, too far and too little
