    I'm a teacher from the Caribbean and just beginning my "chicken journey ". I am hoping to do this commercially one day. I saw your video where you spoke about just buying the chicks without having everything in place. I did the same now I'm trying to get things in place. Your videos are such a big help.

    I absolutely love this design! I just finished building a new 10x12 coop. I am going to try to making this brooder. How many chicks would you estimate that it will hold?

    What about painting the frame before attaching the wire? I think that would make it easier to clean then untreated wood. Thank You Ron

    Great video, nice build….. now that you’ve used it a while are you finding that the doors are too small or thinking that same size but double doors would have been better to easily reach chickens at the ends, or are you happy with how it is? Also, how about the bottom pen, how hard is it getting down there and getting chicks in the bottom pen?

    • @LargeFamilyHomesteaders
      @LargeFamilyHomesteaders  3 роки тому +2

      I'm happy with the door size. I have cats and do not want them eating a Chick that could possibly escapes if the doors were larger. I feel like 1 door is good for us but a second door wouldn't hurt. I'm still young so reaching into the bottom level isn't bad. I think if someone were to have trouble getting on their knees they should build the brooder a tad bit higher. Honestly though, I love this thing! It works really well for having different age birds and being able to seperate them, a place to put hurt birds, a place to lock cats in while changing bedding lol, it's just overall great to have 4 sections. Right now I have chicks in one, turkeys in another & a hen that hatched out chicks. 🙂

    This is an impressive design.. how easy is it to clean? I tried one like this and it gets pretty messy especially when the chicks walk around and in the drinkers

    • @LargeFamilyHomesteaders
      @LargeFamilyHomesteaders  3 роки тому +3

      It's easy to clean with a solid plastic dust pan. The waterers sit on a brick above the shavings when the chicks are a little bigger and they don't get dirty as much. This design is working out great for us. I hope you find a good design or use this one 🙂

      After your next batch clean it the best you can (use something strong, bleach or TSP), dry it for a week at least, then get some linoleum scraps(Craigslist, habitat for humanity) and glue in the linoleum… cleanup will be easy in the future.

    • @LargeFamilyHomesteaders

      It's called a bar folder. It's used for doing sheet metal bends for air conditioning, ducts & making flanges

    I want to build something similar but I’m worried about the heat lamp, what lamps did you use to prevent a fire?

    • @LargeFamilyHomesteaders
      @LargeFamilyHomesteaders  2 роки тому

      I used the bulb lamps sold at Tractor Supply. I use wood chips since it takes a lot higher temperatures to start a fire. 🙂

    Nice cage, but I would suggest that you also use the netting in the floors for the first two weeks of their lives, due to health of the chicks. I have something similar at my home and move them one floor down each week since new chicks arrive each week during the spring time. And the temperature is a little lower in each compartment, so they will be heat free when they are about six weeks old. There is a thing that you do during hatching which is not good, never open the incubator during the hatch, and let the chicks be completely dry before you handle them. I know it is a bit difficult to keep the lid on during the hatch, but it is much better for the chicks.

      I use a dust pan and small brush. To deep clean I hose it down and scrub with a brush, soap and rinse.

    Nothing on the plywood for easy clean up? Scraping chick poo and keeping it clean, i would rethink the floors and make it with removable trays for easy cleaning.

    • @LargeFamilyHomesteaders
      @LargeFamilyHomesteaders  7 місяців тому

      I think if I ever build again, you are right. I want removable floors with vinyl. If you clean the floors when the bedding is freshly soiled, it comes up easy and I throw it out and replace it with new bedding. If I wait it is hard to clean. Once a year I give it a good spray down with soap and let it dry in the sun. Thanks for your tip! Take care 🙂
