Use two 125-watt lamps (or more depending on needed coverage) instead of one 250-watt to increase chick safety through redundancy...IF one bulb konks out, the second will keep everyone going until you replace the dead bulb. Instead of starting a pine compost with new chicks..just start with compost for their bedding...all chickens start on bare ground, except when in confinement. While raising the chicks, you can add grass/vegetable clippings to stimulate their natural foraging instincts...add crickets and they will be in nirvana.

You don't have to put them on constant wire, just a small wire box under the water and feed station to limit the chances of getting it in said water/feed containers!!! I hear Hemp is the best bedding (thou a little more expensive)... However your methods seem to be working Great for you, so I see no reason to change!

I've seen this online as well. I don't own chickens as of yet but I am in the planning phase and this is an idea I have planned to implement.

I agree. Chickens on wire just doesn't feel right. I want them to be able to scratch like chickens are supposed to do.

But i think the problem will be the chicks will eat the wood shavings because they still don't know what is right for them to eat. So the best thing is just make the bedding free so that if there is food that is the only thing they can eat. When they grow enough you can now let them scratch

@@barasa2035 I don't think they eat wood shavings. They will eat saw dust, which is bad. I plan to use a planar to make my own wood shavings from timber from my own woods milled on my sawmill. 😊 sounds so romantic to me 😅

That's a cool water setup. I always hated the wood shavings getting in mine. Deep litter method seems like the way to go, thanks for the advice

The adjustable stand for water is great. It would be really nice to have a temperature stable environment to raise chicks!
Wire is hard on their feet, we use straw instead of wood chips and then we add more straw as they get it packed down with their manure. Your chicks are looking good.
    Great advice all around! 👍

Thanks for watching and all the kind words. I know the climate controlled room is over kill but I wasn’t using it for anything else and it works great for this. I have never used straw for chicks, does it pack down tight to where it hard to clean out?

@@The.Recreational.Homestead we put some thick clear plastic under it and drag it out when we are done or between rounds of chicks. It’s kinda chunky but isn’t too bad and would pitch fork easily if we didn’t use the plastic.

My biggest issue is the shavings constantly getting into the food and water and gumming it up. Hate it. And I put an old cranberry juice bottle in there with a chicken cup but they can’t seem to figure out how to peck at the yellow middle and bring out water. The chicken nipples constantly leak. It’s so frustrating!

What to do with wood shaving after the chick gets grown-up 🤔

Apparently quail aren't to bright but do you know why? Because chicks are teaching each other rather than having parents hence we are creating that issue whilst complaining about it.
