- Check out how I change a McLane edger blade and give other useful tips. One additional tip I didn't mention in the video is to disconnect the spark plug before changing. This is a good safety precaution whenever working on machinery.

My newly acquired old Mclane edger needs the blade replaced. The bolt that needs to be loosened is a 19mm and the end of the bolt takes an 8mm allen wrench. I have the socket and the allen, but for the life of me, I can't unscrew the nut. This shouldn't be that difficult but it's frozen on. I know it couldn't have been changed long before I got the edger because it had a fairly new blade. I'm thinking I'll have to rely on my neighbor and use his pneumatic impact wrench to break it free. How tight should I make the nut once I get it off? I tried lowering the unit to the garage floor like in the tutorial but I was unsuccessful. Any suggestions for removal and tightening will be much appreciated!
I'd say an impact wrench should work to get it off. I don't know the amount of ft-lbs, but I just snug it up enough so it won't slip.
I couldn't for the life of me figure out how I would change my Mclane edger blade. Lowering the blade was the answer. Very helpful. Thanks.
Can a circular wirebrush fit on this?
I'm guessing it would. Are you trying to prevent any damage to the sidewalk?
Very Helpful. How do I go about replacement the Drive Belt? Is it the same process which would loosen the belt?
Steve, my drive belt hasn't worn out yet. I found this video that looks very helpful....Power Trim Edger Did that help answer your question?
***** Didn't realize it was that easy. Thanks Mark!
Can a different blade be used
I don't think you can put a longer blade in there. This 8" blade is longer than most stick edgers.
After the blade is on, how free does the blade spin for you? I'm having a problem with that. It seems that if I tighten it too much (or at least what I used it), I notice that I can't turn the blade by hand. This was even after changing the bearings and friction washers. BTW,, , the bumps in the friction washer need to be on the outside of the blade.
It seems that the blade can move by hand. I've been using my stick edger lately since my belt broke on the McLane. If I get it fixed soon, I'll let you know for sure. Thanks!
Thank you very much. The book said to use a 3/16 allen wrench but your method is better.
Thank for the feedback! Glad it works for you too!
Practical, simple, helpful...thanks!
MassaJim Thank you!
My dilemma is..my handle won't pull all the way back to the first notch.. the blade always spins....but other people asked about a sharp blade? The blade sharpens itself as it hits the cement
Yeah, I don't really worry about the blade being sharp. If it's worn down, I replace it. I'm not sure what's going on with yours to not reach the first notch. It's nice to have that option when carting it around with the engine running.
Great video. Thanks. Can you make one at some point on how to change and/or tighten the belt? Mine is done!
Thanks, I'll look into that idea. My belt is looking pretty worn.
i can't seem to loosen the bolt on mine. Any tips for that?
sorry I see that someone asked that already.
When I held the belt tight, it was enough to loosen it. I'll take a look and see what other ways it can be clamped down for loosening the belt.
I just bought a new blade for my edger. It doesn’t have a “sharpened” edge on either end. Do I need to file sharpen it myself before changing it?
I think it's fine the way it is. I've heard that sharpening doesn't make a difference when it comes to edging.
Does the ground have to be dry because I just got a new blade and it will just stop as soon as it hits the dirt
I have not changed my blade ever! Purchased in 1999...lol swapping out this week! Nice vide
Dang, that's a long time! You must have a good eye for not hitting the concrete ever. Good luck with changing the blade.
Very Helpful thanks for the post :)
Thanks for the comment JDM, I have several outdoor equipment videos coming up, so please subscribe.
Where does one buy the replacement edger blades? Thank you !
My local Stihl dealer, who sells McLane egders sells them. I think they sell replacement blades made by Oregon.
I cannot get the nut loose. Is there a trick to that?
Not that I can think of. I change the blade often enough, so it doesn't get too tight. You might want to try PB Blaster spray or something similar. Good luck, hope you can get it changed.
try first step unplug the spark
+Anthony Burton Good idea, I'll add that tip in my video description.
He could get a lot more use out of the blades he said were worn.
I like a new blade when I have a sidewalk that's way overgrown.
what's the belt part number?
I don't have the manual to look it up. I would suggest getting your model number and calling your local dealer.
markthomasbuilder ok what size blade?
typically nothing happens but there have been cases of the motor starting somehow
+Anthony Burton Strange that would happen... But, better safe than sorry.
You NEVER said which way the blade goes!!!
That’s the MOST important part!!
I believe the Oregon blades don't have a sharp edge and go either way. ECHO blades have a sharp edge, so it's apparent which way it goes on, as long as your know it spins to pull you, not push back. Hope that helps.
@@MarkThomasBuilder it’s not apparent if you just got your fist edger…..that’s the whole reason to watch a UA-cam video!
Thank you
+Whell Hung You're welcome, hope it's helpful.
