Me and a couple buddies of mine were cracking jokes at their expense, not in a spiteful way, just the boys being goofy about it, but my favorite running gag we came up with was, for every time a question was asked that we literally just got the answer to, say "MINUS one Intelligence!" Slightly more enthusiastic than the last time.
By the time they were talking about Jack having the curse, me and my pals got up, gathered in a circle around the screen, dropped a collective "Boi" hand and all heavy metal screamed it together. It was magical.

The curse occurs when you take/steal the forbidden treasure of Cortes.
At the end Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) when faced against Captain Barbossa, takes one gold coin and only then he becomes cursed and immortal. He plans to return all the treasure, and by that lifting the curse and then shooting Barbossa with the bullet saved for him...
"I'm confused" - Taking a drink every time that phrase is uttered would be dangerous. I have never seen people struggle this much to follow such a simple movie.

Funny thing about how you guys talk about how Jack does nothing this movie, he was originally designed as a side character for Will and Elizabeth's love story, but Johnny Depp was so good in the role they made him more and more prominent, eventually being the main character along with Will and Elizabeth in the rest of the trilogy!
Captain Jack's introduction is the greatest character introduction that has ever been put on screen. It tells 1,000,000 words about him with no dialogue
Elizabeth knew as a child that if the adults knew william was possibly a pirate he would be hung, so she hid the necklace.
William was not a pirate as a child and was just travelling or working on one of the ships attacked; his father had sent him his aztec gold necklace. He did not know his dad was a pirate.
Disney acquired a major movie business. They branched out into things like this. Its not supposed to be for young kids. They were rated accordingly in theatres.
There is no *necklace* - it's a gold coin. Elizabeth added the necklace and wore it as such.

Jack got cursed because he stole a coin. Just before Will said "you planned this all along". Will saw him stealing the coin and was playing along. Jack stole the coin as insurance sò he can decide the moment when the curse can be broken.
Pirates werent a rare thing. They ruled the sea, also had culture with it. There was a whole goverment of pirates in the bahamas at some point.
This film had no right going so hard for it being based off an old theme park ride lol

@@xejelah Nope, @brettcloud8850 got it right. This movie was based on the Pirates of the Caribbean dark ride, which can be found at all Disney Parks, except Hong Kong Disneyland. The oldest iteration of the ride opened in Disneyland in Anaheim, California, all the way back on March 18, 1967.
The books were novelizations of the movies, not the other way around.

@@user-pp5hr6xk5p They took vignettes from the ride, wrote a story around them and turned it into a movie. The ride already had a basic story anyway, so the, uhm... _skeleton_ for a movie script about cursed, undead pirates was already there.
Also, it's certainly possible that you heard Johnny Depp's voice on the ride. The rides may be old, but they do get updated. And replacing an audio track is an exceedingly simple update.

To clear up the story:
William Turner Senior, and Jack Sparrow and Barbossa were all on the same crew of the Black Pearl, When Barbossa started the Mutiny he Marooned Jack and Killed majority of the people who were Loyal to Jack, They Tied William Turner Sr to a Cannon and Let him sink to the bottom of the Ocean after they had already collected the Aztec Gold, Effectively Killing William Senior for Eternity (Allegedly, IYKYK) while Barbossa took command and patrolled the seas for majority of the time, then figuring out he was cursed began the search for the missing coin that William Sr had sent to his son, "Only those that took upon the chest of the Aztec gold" William Turner Jr, didn't technically steal but had the coin which effectively kept the curse alive for majority of the crew, while Jack Sparrow was Still making a name for himself doing pirate things and trying to reclaim his Ship back.
Jack a Con Artist swiftly takes the coin at the end to become a Undead, but obviously they planned that out perfectly and killed Barbossa

THIS. All of this. Will was not a pirate, it was not a pirate ship that was attacked at the beginning. The Pearl attacked a civilian vessel because the coin was there, but Will had no idea. Jack wasn't with the crew when they found the treasure because they'd already mutinied against him. Bootstrap WAS cursed, but...well, it's explained more later on. I feel like they missed a lot of pretty important details in this movie.
Why wasn't Elizabeth cursed? She had the medallion for years.
@@imdiyu because she didn't actually take it from the treasure in the first place. Same reason Will wasn't cursed. In order to get the curse, you had to directly steal the treasure. I'm guessing this kept bystanders from getting cursed. Also it would probably be easier to keep track of.

The only person with any clue he was a pirate was Elizabeth.
She never told anyone, including him.
The child was never a pirate. He had a piece of gold with him. Elizabeth assumed that meant he was a pirate and y'all ran with that assumption. He was on a merchant ship when it was blown up by pirates.
Will wasn't a pirate, he came off the burning ship at the beginning, not the Black Pearl. The implication is that they attacked it because of the draw of the medallion, but that they didn't find him in the wreckage. Elizabeth just thought he was a pirate because she was a child, and she saw he had a scary skull medallion
when he took that coin he got the curse

I see there's a little more confusion lol so here's a big ol timeline
- Pirate ship the Black Pearl goes on a voyage to find the Aztec treasure. Will's dad Bootstrap is part of Jack's crew
- Barbossa replaces Jack as captain after leading a mutiny, and maroons Jack
- The crew finds the treasure, steals it, and spends a lot of it
- Eventually they realise they're cursed. Jack didn't get cursed because he obviously wasn't with them to steal it; he gets cursed near the movie's end because he stole a coin out of the chest while he was negotiating with Barbossa
- Boostrap feels guilty about the mutiny, and decides that they all deserve to be cursed anyway
- So he sends a coin to his son Will, to stop it being returned
- Barbossa is pissed and traps him in a fate worse than death, tied to a cannon at crush depth somewhere at the bottom of the ocean
- ..but later they find out that every thief needs to pay back blood before the curse will be lifted. They can't lift the curse because they lost Bootstrap in the ocean before he ever paid back blood
- And this is why they need Will's blood. Finding Bootstrap would be near-impossible, but they know he has a child
- They can use Will instead because he has his father's blood. And the gold calls to them, so it should be possible to find him via the coin Bootstrap sent him
- At some point, Will travels to the Caribbean to look for his father, bringing the coin with him. And the ship he's on gets wrecked by the Black Pearl, like in the very beginning, but they don't manage to find him and Liz takes the coin

You were missing EVERYTHING! 1) Will wasn’t a pirate 2) Not understanding where all the skeletons on the ship came from. 3)Jack wasn’t cursed the whole time! I’ve seen a lot of people confused about that for the first 10 seconds, but EVERYONE gets it as soon as they focus on Jack playing with the coin he stole!!!! 😂😂😂😂 You guys must have been a little distracted today. 😂😂😂😂

Mythbusters tried to do the upside-down Row boat scene: while you can trap air in an upside down boat, the pull up from buoyancy of the air is to great to bring it down to that debth.
To clear your questions up, this is stuff that took most of us several watches to figure out because like you said, the script in this movie is so tight that you sometimes miss subtle hints. It took me like 5 times seeing this as a kid with these questions in mind to figure it all out.
-The curse applies to you when you *take a coin out of that chest and palm it*. If you simply hold a coin that somebody else removed it won't curse you. This is why elizabeth and will, and all the vendors they spent the gold to never got cursed, they didn't remove it from the chest. And when elizabeth steals it the second time, it's after barbossa takes the coin out, waves it in her face, then slaps her and she rolls down the hill and it flies out of his hand and lands next to her. Then she picks it up off the ground when will saves her. (genuis detail that took me years to notice.)
-Jack's wobblyness only happens when he's on land. Whenever he's on a ship he walks fine because it's what he's used to.
-Jack was only cursed at the end there. When he's explaining his plan to barbossa and he tells will to "wait for the opportune moment" there's a shot of him subtly palming one and will notices. That's when will figures out he's playing them and plays along.
-Barbossa actually says "i feel old" but 90% of us thought it was cold too.
-Elizabeth intially lies about her last name because she assumes the pirates are there to kidnap and ransom her because she's royalty. When her maid tells her to hide she says "they're here for you, you're the governers daughter!". She had no way of knowing will and his bloodline were of any importance so she used his name.
-While forming an airbubble in an upside down boat would work, the problem is they would be nowhere near strong enough, or heavy enough to hold it on the ocean floor like that. You would need thousands of pounds to counteract the bouyancy of the air buuble so it would have just pulled them to the surface.
-The one plothole nobody has ever answered: If the pirates can walk on the ocean floor, and have done so many times, why were they worried when she threatened to drop it in the ocean? They could have just walked down and grabbed it.
An explanation I came up with for your plothole, which has bothered me for years, was that the last piece they needed after ten years of searching was staring them right in the face, and they were so desperate to get it that they flinched when Elizabeth fake drops it. I have no doubt that if she actually did drop it, the entire crew would've thrown themselves overboard and it would've been fine for them. I think it was a tiny moment of irrational panic coming from the humanness in them.
the only question that remain unanswered for me after watching the movie a couple of times is why they actually need the Turner's blood to remove the curse
@@nancyevans2680Will's dad took the coin. Will blood will work because he's part of his dad's bloodline as his descendant (hence why they need Turner's "blood").
His dad is at the bottom of the ocean unable to move due to the crushing weight of the sea. So Will is the next best choice.
It's kinda like a loophole in a complicated contract.

They returned all the coins, and if the case is that Will's dad should return it himself, wouldn't just Will's present at the cave be enough? It's not like they need other crew member's blood. I believe they never mentioned in the movie that they would need everyone who took the gold to return the coins with their own blood. And if that's the case, wouldn't they need Jack's blood too, when he stole the coins and became cursed too, Will just broke the curse with his blood and it worked. So hence the question why Turner's blood? What is it special about it?

@@nancyevans2680 They already used the other crew members blood when they returned the pieces of gold. This occured before the movie started. Will's gold piece and blood were the last things needed to break the curse since everyone else already gave their pieces back along with their own blood.
As for Jack, he did use his blood, he cut his hand with his sword and tossed his bloody gold piece to Will before Will cut himself with the knife. It's pretty quick but it happens after Will and Elizabeth blew up those three pirates. So yes, Jack gave back the piece he stole and gave it his blood to help break the curse.
46:08 Jack Sparrow stole a coin while speaking to Balbosa therefore he was cursed and Wil saw it all. Jack wasn't cursed before.
The canoe part under water having breathing room is real! If you keep something steady enough creating an air pocket you can use that air pocket to breath. When I was a kid I used to take a bucket in the pool, put my head inside of it and gently slide down under the water keeping the bucket steady and would see how far I could go without the bucket filling up. But be ready because once that air pocket starts to take water it fills up in a blink of an eye and you can drown.
Two adults are unlikely to overcome the buoyancy of a whole boat, but yes the principle is real physics. If they'd tied weights front and back, I'd have no complaints

Jack came in after they took her blood and it didn't work. Jack played with the coins in the chest and took a coin, all part of his plan from the beginning. Jack was not cursed, Jack was the one who knew where the gold was. They took the ship when they found out and left him stranded on the island. They then went and got the gold and got cursed.
19:00 the physics are actually pretty perfect whenever you take something down you got to do it perfectly they're creating air pocket that way they can breathe like when we were little we used to stick a bucket over our head and go underwater because there would be an air pocket underneath you could breathe you can only breathe so much because it turns into carbon dioxide but that's actually physics 101 and that is pretty true pretty perfect physics

Loved your lord of the rings reaction, you payed attention and took notes. With this one though it seemed like you ignored many important aspects and assumed to know what would happen instead of waiting till the movie told you. Will was not a pirate for one. Also, the movie is literally called "Curse of the Black Pearl" and yet you acted surprised when they showed the curse. I would suggest rewatching before you continue down this pirate movie journey. I would also suggest to stop over thinking things and just enjoy the movies.

You can indeed walk breath underwater the way Will and Jack did. The original way people walked on the bottom of the ocean was with helmets that did the same thing. 👍🙂

Why on earth would you guys think that a little boy was a pirate and worse yet that he cannot even remember he was a pirate? Nobody told him he was a pirate. Where in the movie did he lose him memory?? You guys are overthinking. He is the son of the pirate. That's what you are supposed to take away.
Pirates and sailors were often yellow because they had scurvy. Very common reason for their deaths.

The wrong physics is not "duuh, there wouldn't be air in something that's underwater". It's them somehow walking underwater (you try doing that without anything weighing you down), while simultanously carrying something that would require a frickin' hippo standing on it, not to shoot up to the surface like a rocket. Nothing is weighing down them OR the boat, yet they're just casually walking with it.
Hey Mair and Sophie, don’t listen to the jack wagons in the comments. They don’t have to watch your reactions if they don’t like the way y’all do your thing. Also, they must forget the other movies where y’all pick up on every detail and figure the plot out easy even though it’s a complex movie. I go back and watch POTC every few years and find new things each time that I didn’t realize before. I will keep watching with you guys cause it reminds me of hanging out with my friends in college and those are times I love to relive😁🤘!

Jack wasnt cursed to begin with, his crew and barbosa betrayed him prior to the movie and left him on the deserted island.... thats why the crew is cursed when they grab the gold for themselves, BUT NOT JACK. However, during the cave scene, Jack secretly took one of the gold piece and the curse got him too. Logic here is.... whoever takes the gold OUT OF THE CHEST becomes curse... but if you took the gold and gave it to someone else, the other people who touch it arent cursed. aka William and the girl is fine for touching it.
So, originally, Jack was not supposed to be the main character. It was supposed to be Will and Elizabeth being the main characters while Jack was just a one off comic relief. But the fans liked Jack so much that they pivoted so that for the rest of the movies he is a main character.

The boat up side down scenario actually works with the air pocket in that boat…if you take a cup turn it upside down and push it into the water , you will see air left in the class despite the whole glass is under water….but the reason why this scene with the upside down boat will not work is because off the force of the replaced water being now air and creates a force that lift you to the surface of the sea ….but if the volume of replaced water ( airpocket ) has the same or lower weight ( force ) as jack and will and the boat..then it is physically absolutely possible 👍🏾

I just realized this was posted 11 hours ago. You guys totally gotta watch the rest of the main trilogy for Pirates of the Caribbean. Also a while back you guys asked for comedy recommendations. Get Smart (2008) is a super underrated comedy action movie that I strongly recommend.

Jacks ultimate plan was to get the black pearl back. Everything is else is leading up to that, to help him achieve that goal. He may look like he's clueless but everything he does is planned, thought put.
It’s an air pocket, like put your head in a bucket and bring it straight down and there will be air at the top

I get the knowing her as a girl thing weirds you out, but at the start of the film although she was 12 and he 20, she was only about 5 or so years from marriageable age for that time and as seen above there was only an 8 year difference between them at the point of the main story she was about 19 or so making him 27 which was slightly past peak age for them both.
