I just want to put it out there since sometimes ppl seem to miss it; Haymitch has been mentoring tributes year after year and had to see them get killed. He is seriously traumatized, hence his attitude and drunkness.
Haymitch also had twice the number of tributes to defend himself from because he was part of the 2nd quarter quell. I couldn't even begin to imagine how terrified he must've been.
Thank you for pointing that out. In the book they mention that several times, but it was a mistake to not have some exposition behind Haymitch's demeanor
In the book, Katniss and her sister and Mom were starving after their dad died. Peeta saw that she was starving and practically at death doorstep at the tree so he burned a loaf of bread on purpose, and pretended to go give it to the pigs, but he actually threw it to her and that’s what gave her hope to start hunting for food for her family. Peeta saves Katniss more than once.
"Why do they have kids?" Its only ages 12-18. Katniss dad didn't die in the games. He would have been to old to go then. He died in a coal mine explosion.
Cato said that thing at the end about “dead anyway” because that’s the game, that’s their lives. The games are supposed to kill everyone. And even if you win, you can tell by Haymitch, your soul is dead because of the experience of the games. It’s not about it being centered around Peeta & Katniss.
He’s also talking about the odds. His whole life, he trained for the games. It never even crossed his mind he was going to loose, but for the first time he realized that he was always just a pawn.
If Cato had won, he would always be known as the victor who killed the star crossed lovers from 12. There was no possible good outcome for him. He’d never be able to move on with his life, even if he physically survived. None of the victors really can escape the games.
@@emilylewis5373interesting! Never thought about that. I just imagined him winning and having a whole arc of becoming a good but traumatized man. It is almost as interesting as the characters from 12 that survived
In the books she told Cinna that Gale is her bestfriend and she also refer to him as her hunting partner. She wasn’t open to romantic relationships coz she was busy surviving but then the boys caught feelings and she had to somehow deal with them while she’s saving their lives as well.
She comments in the books that a lot of girls like Gale. She’s not romantically jealous, but say she would be sad because “good hunting partners are hard to find.”
The dad blew up in a coal mine. The hallucination of the house blowing up is to represent how the mining accident blew up her family, and made her mom crazy. Not literally that her house blew up. It is metaphorical.
The guy from 11 whose name is "Thresh" is supposed to be *huge*, well over six feet tall. I always kind of laugh when he just slams the girl from 2 ("Clove") into the metal like she ain't sh!t. There's a bit more reasoning for why he helps Katniss in the book but not much. Though from his perspective he got picked from an outlying district (like Katniss) and his district partner was a teeny tiny girl. He didn't help the little girl in the arena, probably he saw her as a liability, but almost immediately after she dies, it's announced you CAN work with your district partner. I would be feel SO GUILTY that I "let" Rue die. She was smart and kind and would've made a good ally. (I say "let" because it's not his fault Rue dies, it's the Capitol and he's also a child who has no control over the situation.)
Right. And despite the situation I imagine he’s a good guy. I can’t imagine the pain and guilt of having my district partner being a 12 year old girl. He might not know her personally but he’s not a monster and he appreciates how someone looked out for her in the games even if he wouldn’t.
man, i've never really thought about that perspective of the ''partnership'' and everything, how guilty he must have felt. i'll definitely watch and read Hunger Games a lil more differently now when it comes to this, tks
They’re not the WORST district, they’re the poorest. And all the mentors for each district have previously won their game. That’s why they’re a mentor. Haymitch drinks so much because all of his tributes until now have died.
21:30 Fun Fact: In the Hunger Games three years prior to this movie, the victor Johanna (from District 4) deliberately screwed up in both her training and evaluation portions to give herself an extremely low score to both not make her an initial target and to hide that she was highly skilled with an ax. It was only once it was down to her and few other tributes that she finally unleashed herself and quickly slaughtered the other tributes. So the score system, while a good evaluation, can be manipulated and should only be trusted hesitantly.
Instead of being dressed as coal miners, they were dressed as coal itself (and on fire). On the apartments, district one is on the first floor, district 2 is on the second, and so on. District 12 gets the top floor since there is no district 13
Fun fact: Katniss & Primrose are plants. Primrose is a flower & Katniss is an edible plant. Katniss dad before he died told her “as long as you can find yourself, you’ll never go hungry”. Katniss mom couldn’t react or do anything and she’s not the only parent who can’t show emotion or else she’ll be punished.
@@btstrasharmyexo-lbaekiesha2776 Katniss is and edible plant it is grown in the wetlands, and its taste is said to be similar to a sweet potato the native Americans used to have it as a staple in their diet. Catnip is Gail‘s nickname for Katniss, because he thought that she said her name was catnip.
@@jadegold8339 I usually call a katniss plant the name Sagittaria so i hadn’t realised it’s the same lol but catnip isn’t only Katniss’ nickname from Gale but it’s also an actual plant
@@btstrasharmyexo-lbaekiesha2776 Katniss is a real plant also called a swamp potato or arrowhead that's edible. Catnip is an herb like a mint that's popularly used to give cats a high. Totally different plants, but funny because catnip thrives in dry climates while katniss needs wetlands.
@@disneytoysr4fun975he didn't, if he hadn't acted like he was going to help them, they would've just killed him on the spot and he can't protect her if he's dead. If he had actually betrayed her, he would've taken the chance to kill her quick and easy when she was loaded up on tracker jacker venom.
@@disneytoysr4fun975 iirc in the books he doesn't run into the woods, Katniss doesn't know where he goes, but it's implied he allies with the careers because Glimmer has the bow and he knows that that weapon will ensure Katniss' survival, he also stays awake and fights Cato off while Katniss is hallucinating on tracker jacker venom (which is how he gets injured before Katniss finds him later)
Cato-at the end- says "I'm dead anyways" becasue after he lost Clove (the girl from two that Thresh (11) killed, whom he had a romance with in the books), he realized that even though he trained for this his entire life-volunteering for the games was no honor at all. That he was no different from the poorer districts that didn't train, and that he was also just a pawn in the Capitol's games. He realized his entire life's purpose was really just capitol brainwashing and propganda. Haymitch says in a later book/movie that there are no victors of the games-only surviors showing how no matter what district you come from or what skills a kid has they are all just vistims of the Capitol and all equally oppressed (albit some districts have higher quailiies of life). Also, after he is thrown off the cornicopia to the dogs, he says "please" to Katniss and that is why she mercy killed him-to end his suffering. Katniss also realizes the same things as Cato- that the Career districts are brainwashed and not the true enemy-the Capitol and President Snow is.
Also, Katniss blowing up the food is extra smart because typically the career districts have acess to more wealth and are therefore more nourished/have access to food more easily. Whereas poorer districts like 11 and 12 are constantly being starved and therefore need to find other means for food-such as hunting or scavenging. At this point in the games there are mostly career tributes and 11/12 tributes. 11/12 tributes know how to scavenge/hunt for food whereas career districts have most likely never had to and don't have those skillsets. This gives the poorer districts an advantange because the career districts will then struggle more than 11/12 districts when trying to stay nourished for the rest of the games. Foxface purposely trailed behind tributes and steals a bit of other tribute's food (small enough so no one grows suspicious that shes tailing them) most likely because she didn't posess those hunting skills and didn't control/have acess to the provided food from the capitol that the career districts had (she sneakily steals from the careers though). In the books its a bit more clear that Foxface wasn't trying to commit suicide by eating berries that were poisonous (the movies show during the training montage that she had identified those berries but in the books that wasn't the case) and she steals a bit of the berries from Peeta asuming that they were safe because the environment they were in was similar to his home not hers- so she trusted that the berries he picked were safe to eat. Unknown to her Peeta grew up in the Merchant district of 12 so he had access to food more than Katniss and didn't develope hunting/gathering skill like Katniss and picked the wrong berries.
I read all the Hunger Games books. You would be shocked at how violent they were. They watered down the violence alot. In the books when they put the dogs into the game. They had the faces of all the dead tributes.
@@SOA_yt You are correct. I meant to word that differently. I think the books referenced the eyes, and the fur matching the hair color. And something about the district that they were in. Its been so long since I read it.
@@darlenenoble7232 No problem, it's also been a while since I've read it. I just remember that part specifically because I went to each of member of my family to look at their eyes and see if I'd recognize them if they were implanted on a mutt 😂
The more I watch this movie, the more I love the scene where Katniss bumps into Foxface (redhead girl) when the game begins. They're two young girls, thrown into a dangerous situation against their will. Both are absolutely terrified and it shows.
9:34 in the books the mom is described as having severe depression and mental health issues. Katniss had to step in and take care of the family after her dad died. 59:56 😆 😂
that part is in the movie but its not explained really well. But it really shows up in her interactions with her mom when you know it. Katniss doesn't really view her as a maternal figure really. She loves her mom, but they don't have that mother daughter relationship.
His mom said that Peeta had no chance because she was a horrible mom. Even if you thought your child couldn’t win, you don’t say that to them before they’re sent off to die in the Hunger Games. And nothing about this is supposed to be FAIR.
btw, the scoring system before the games is -/12 not out of ten! so she got an almost perfect score, which usually never happens. this is because the gamemakers she shot at wanna put a target on her back, so the careers want to take her out asap
In the first book it’s implied that she actually earned an 11 - she shot more than three arrows initially, but they didn’t notice her hitting all the targets until she shot the apple. But you’re right, in Catching Fire they gave her a score of 12 to put a target on her back, and we know it’s not skill based because she didn’t shoot anything
The reward for winning the game was lifetime amount of money enough to feed 10 families that they will receive monthly and house in Victor’s Village among other privileges and of course prestige for being a victor. Their district will also receive food for the entire year which will mean a lot to district 12. But they will also be mentors for the next tributes that will be reaped.
katniss herself spells this out explicitly as someone filled with fire, she doesn't need more fire in her life (gale), but the dandelion in the spring (peeta)
I do believe the mom represents the apathy of the public. She's a physical representation of the beaten down and defeated masses who allow themselves to be abused because it's easier than getting angry and doing anything to change it.
In the books its more clear the mom has true depression and needed medical help because later the mom (who is a healer) talks to Katniss how she treated other people with her condition but she didn't have anyone to help her because the adults in the Seam didn't appear to care when they obviously knew a widow with 2 kids would need help.
Katniss climbing up and tying herself to the tree is actually a smart survival technique. She's up and away from possible predators on the ground (in this case, other people) and she can get some rest/sleep without worrying about falling off the branch.
It's not spoiling, she's guessing, and it just happens to be correct. Guessing is engaging with the plot. As far as the other watchers are concerned, she could've guessed wrong too, thus it isn't a spoiler
I’ll say this just because everyone I’ve seen react to this movie never notice it… Katniss shot Cato’s hand because Peta was lightly tapping it and pointing at it when he was being choked. It was a team effort! Anyway, that’s all lol
Peeta loses his leg after the games, but that isn’t shown in the movie. It’s important to remember to think of his limits with a newly amputated leg in the following movie! They had to keep the impacts of the injury in for storylines purposes but because they cut the cause - many movie watchers thought he was clumsy or weak or that people were concerned about him for no real reason!
My one complaint about these is the way Peeta was done dirty making him look weak and inept. Book Peeta was too good for this world and Katniss would not have survived any of it without him. He was the one person who was 100% about her and what she needed.
I wish they would have kept that in! I think it would have been a good metaphor for the lasting impact of the game and would have developed his character more 😔 like they had to cut stuff out, I get it. But I feel that was important.
Katniss was using a different bow than what she’s used to and when you use a different bow in archery you kinda take a little bit of time to get acclimated to the new bow
I don’t think you guys understand the concept of a totalitarian government but that’s what it is, some districts are better off and most of them are poor and controlled by the government the wealthy people lives in the capital only the games were created to show control to these people and instigate fear but when katniss did the berry situation that was the first time somebody controlled them and also a person from a low income district … when snow talked about hope he was talking about giving courage to the poor because a spark can became a fire hence hope can become riots against the government, that’s what katniss is
Katniss and Gale live in what’s called The Seam in district 12. They’re more than dirt poor. The Mom is mentally checked out because Katniss‘s dad died in the mines. This forced Katniss to become the breadwinner for the family at 11 years old.
I loved you two debating Katniss's feelings for Gale vs Peeta! It means the movie did its job! Your bickering/debating is hilarious. I was only mad at Sophie's spoiler at the end - hey, don't tell him if he hasn't heard any spoilers for Catching Fire!!! 😢 BUT! I will still come back to watch - can't wait for the rest of your Hunger Games reactions!
It's heavily theorized (even by her own actress, Jacqueline Emerson) that Foxface, the smart redhead girl, ate the poisonous berries on purpose. She's seen nailing some sort of plant identifier simulator during the training sequence and, at that point in the game, she would have to go against either the highly trained boy from 2, the big and strong boy from 11 or the two capital favorites from 12. Maybe she thought it would be better to go out on her own, in a quick and painless way
If you are starving & near death, probably hallucinating and you see the guy with Katniss picking a berry, that in the books they describe is near impossible to distinguish from mom lethal berries, you most likely just feel relief "they found something I can eat too" & start stuffing your face. In the book she had already been stealing little bits of food from them when they weren't looking. She trusted their judgement & she shouldn't have/couldn't do anything more in her near death state.
@@hoykfnvnnesnxnnensncjforkx1616that is true, but it’s also from katniss’s perspective. Foxface knew plants by heart, and probably stole to 1. Save time and energy and 2. Keep an eye out on her opponents. I personally think that there is a fair chance that she decided to pass quietly, especially since she knew that they were a district pair still alive, a career and a super strong guy who killed a career alone. But yet againnn, it’s all theoretical!
@@Lydzoit isn’t a fair chance she decided to die quick because she stole Peeta and Katniss’ bread roll, apple and cheese AS WELL AS the berries. why would she take all this food if she was planning to kill herself? plus, katniss notes that nightlock is native to the off-bound woods of D12 and in D13 so foxface would have never seen them before nor would peeta. ANDDD katniss had done all the plant recognition tests in the training centre and nightlock wasnt in any of them. EVEN FURTHERMORE, katniss described her as “emaciated” when she was pulled into the hover craft so she was starvinggg. her only food source was the careers and her constantly stealing from them hints that she can’t find her own food so she was relying on other tributes better judgement. because peeta was with katniss, foxface overestimated peetas’ abilities and that got her killed. katniss touched up on the fact that overestimating or underrating your competitors could kill you, this is what happened to foxface. katniss would have allied with her but she said that the subtle smirk on her face would guarantee her “a knife in the back”. she also said that foxface was much too smart and that if they had set it up as a trap, she likely would have lived. also i love jaqueline but her saying that foxface may have killed herself doesn’t mean anything because they get their scripts and character personalities straight from the book, the only one who can confirm the theory is suzan collins and she’s made it fairly clear that foxfaces’ death was an accident.
Just an FYI president snow had some history with district 12. When you guys finish the series, you gotta watch the prequel which tells president snows story!
District 1: Luxury Goods Montana, Wyoming & Idaho Think of Chanel, Adidas, Tiffany’s, Crate and Barrel, Human wair wigs, makeup, etc. all the expensive things in our life) This results in District 1 being generally better off and closer to the Capitol than most other districts. Its population is wealthy compared to most of Panem's citizenry. This extends to being able to raise and train Career Tributes to consistently win the Hunger Games year after year. District 2: Masonry, Stone cutting, Military Near the Rocky Mountains in Colorado Peacekeepers work closely with the Capitol. They have a good diet, good training and good tech. They’re rich compared to the other districts and produce a lot of career tributes. District 3: Technology Cali, Oregon, Utah This district is pretty rich. They make all the lasers and tvs and holograms and stuff. District 4: Fishing Cali,Texas,Mexico They are pretty rich and they boast the most amount of victors in the hunger games. They can swim and tie knots and catch food District 5: Power and electricity [Not sure location] They are like upper middle class. District 6: Transportation Michigan, Illinois They make trains and automobiles. Even hover crafts. But they are not rich at all. District 7: Lumber and paper Washington State A poor district and small. District 8: Textiles South Carolina They make all the cloth and fabric. They are middle class District 9: Grain Wisconsin, Iowa, ND, SD, Nebraska, Minnesota District 10: Meat Texas, New Mexico, Arizona They do all the livestock and slaughterhouses. They are impoverished. District 11: Agriculture Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Ozarks,Oklahoma, Kansas Growing orchards, fruits, trees, necessary plants. District 12: Coal mines Appalachian Mountain region, West Virgina, PA, Virginia, Maryland Smallest and poorest District 13: Graphite and Nuclear Technology Maine, NH, Vermont, MA The Capitol : what was once Colorado
It’s said that Florida isn’t apart of panem that it sunk as well as most of the 13 colonies, part of California and some of Mexico , a lot of southern states
When some people think the plot is unbelievable, pitting young people against each other to the death…it’s already happened. Way back in history there were similar games and even the early christians were fed to lions, let alone gladiators. Since early times, the ability of cruelty to others has been recorded. I think the books and movies of this series are quite well done. 😽🎥
A lot of people are now realising that Suzanne Collins, the author, has got an insanely good grasp on human nature. The Hunger Games is a metaphor for our real lives. I won’t spoil anything but by the time you get to the end of the series (maybe even Ballad too), you’ll be able to see the parallels of the story to what is currently going on in the world. Literally, there are scenes that can be real life.
The mentor can't just give things to their tribute, but they are the ones to convince sponsors to send something, try and get them to send specific things, & send the stuff from the sponsors where they can include a note like Haymitch did.
Those who lived in District 1 were some of the wealthiest citizens of Panem. Tributes from District 1 were known as "Careers" because they trained for years before competing in the Hunger Games, using their wealth and status to become elite warriors and get a leg up on the competition.
I don’t think they explain it to explicitly in the movie but your name automatically goes in to the “draw” to be in the hunger games once when you turn 12. You can get extra rations and food by putting your name in more times so basically to pay for more food you have to increase your odds of being chosen. That’s why Gale’s name was in like 40 something times and Prim’s was only in once and why Katniss told her she wouldn’t be chosen bc the odds were that she wouldn’t. So the odds being “ever in your favor” has that double meaning.
Funny how everybody misses the rating system which is 1-12. Ceaser Flickerman (Stanley Tucci) literally says it in the beginning of the broadcast “The tributes were rated on a scale 1 to 12”. All the tributes from the first districts (which usually have all the volunteers ‘cause they think the Games are for fun and entertainment) get rated with high numbers like 9 and 10, but Katniss got 11. And it’s usually a big deal not just because she got the highest and almost perfect rating, but they actually made her the biggest threat to everyone else.
1. The fire theme for Peeta and Katniss is meant to represent coal (and the burning of it) which is what District 12 produces. 2. When President Snow was telling Seneca to "contain" the spark of hope, he was telling him don't encourage rebellious acts like Katniss shooting the apple. Allowing too much free speech or rebellious acts may gather the districts together against the capitol. The Games were meant to keep the districts separate, subjugated, and in conflict with each other. They wont work together to overthrow the capitol if they are in opposition and think poorly of each other 3. Peeta is my fave character in the series. When he tells everyone he likes Katniss, he was being real but also strategic. At that point, he did not believe he could win so made his strategy to help Katniss look good and have better chances to win. He is very good with people and quite smart, on top of his strength and camouflage skills. The fact he convinces the Careers to take him on is a feat in itself. It was a smart but very risky strategy to watch them and Katniss at the same time so he could assist her against them at the right time. 4. Lol Gale is not her boyfriend. That's her friend. Peeta does like Katniss for real. Katniss feels indebted to Peeta for saving her life, and does think he is a kind person so wants both of them to survive when the rules were changed but when we see her kiss him, it's not cause she likes him. She is playing the game for people to root for them so they can both survive. She understands that is what Haymitch wants by the gifts in the arena he sends
The reason in the books she misses the first arrow is because shes used to using her old wooden bow and arrows ans wasnt used the the change in weight, material etc. And becauae she didnt use it in training she didnt know until that moment!
Katniss‘s sister, Primrose, had zero chance of surviving. She would have been like the young boy who dies almost immediately if Katniss hadn’t taken her place. The pack of kids that were hunting Katniss couldn’t shoot her with an arrow because archery isn’t easy and they had no training with a bow.
just wanted to point out that at 49:00 the reason that she spent so long monologuing before killing katniss is because she promised cato (her district partner) that if he let her kill katniss then she would give the audience a good show. this happens in the books but they cut it out of the movie. also after shes killed by thresh cato comes and mourns her body because its a theory that cato and clove were more than friends, which also explains why cato killed thresh, not only to get his backpack back but also as revenge i think. in the movies however, they don't show the fight scene between cato and thresh.
The cool thing about Haymitch is that he won the 50th games (2nd quarter quell) where they had double the amount of people.. so that kinda explains a lot why it took such a toll on him.. that’s like 2 games in 1
46:49 "You want to know the difference between stalking and romance is? Romance happens in movies, in real life it's called stalking." -Private Tucker, Red vs Blue season 9.
The reason katinss didn’t hit the target with the audition the first time is because it’s metal bow & arrow, it’s different weight from the wood that’s she’s used to, that’s why it took her a minute to get the balance right
There was no mention of her father the entire movie, they just showed how her dad died in the mine explosion and how that death "exploded" the family's lives.
I hate to say this but seeing you guys not quite wrapping your head around the seriousness of it all and the fact that “fair” doesn’t matter to the president because the cruelty is intentional - makes me almost excited for you to see the next one and start to understand it
To answer the question of what Katniss and Peeta were supposed to be when they were entering the arena, instead of being coal miners like all other tributes in the past, they were supposed to be lumps of coal that caught fire. Irregular, but still in the spirit of the games. It certainly caught people’s attention.
You guys are cracking me up because if you just keep watching the movies you'll get so many answers to all your questions haha also if you go watch ballad of songbirds and snakes which is in theaters now you'll get more answers to about why and how the games started
Haymitch is a drunk bc he’s drowning his sorrows because during HIS hunger games he found a flaw in the arena and used it to win HIS game. That pissed off President Snow & he killed Haymitch’s Girlfriend & Family.
Katniss' dad died in a mining explosion. He couldn't have died in the games if the game is for teens. Also, President Snow was saying that they have a winner because a winner gives ppl hope. Hope that they could maybe one day succeed and become rich and be loved by the capital. But, if you give too much hope... than that hope can turn on you and ppl can realize their circumstances and rebel against it (which, is what happens in this movie series). So, you have to give them just enough hope to control them but not enough to be overthrown by them (similar to the false hope that capitalism provides by saying if you work hard you'll be successful and rich when most ppl work their a**es off and never see more than $25/hr but because a select few manage to go from rags to riches, others have hope that they can too although the system isn't designed for that many ppl to reach success --> the games are the same).
Fun fact their mentor the drunk he is a former winner of the games if you guys didn’t learn that later, but his games was the craziest games ever. It was the first quarter quill and they had double the contestants and he won that man has every right to be a fall down drunk
Katniss has feelings she hasn't had time or the luxury to process, but the main issue is she still has to "perform" for the cameras so it doesn't matter if her feelings are real or not, that required performance makes her feel fake
I would love for the entire trilogy to become a series so that we could see it all play out and lose nothing. When you go into the next film please keep in mind Peeta is an amputee who lost his leg to the mutts at the end of the first game . Gale was not the boyfriend. Katniss wonders at one point one would happen if she opened that door, but never actually does. Peeta had rooted in her heart with that act of kindness at age 11 and Katniss who had kept track of him and watched him did catch feelings during the games. His reaping did upset her and added to the misfortune of that day. Katniss narrated the book and these are some of her thoughts on Peeta. "To this day, I can never shake the connection between this boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope, and the dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed." This is the first kiss where I actually feel stirring inside my chest. Warm and curious. This is the first kiss that makes me want another." “And while I was talking, the idea of actually losing Peeta hit me again and I realized how much I don't want him to die. And it's not about the sponsors. And it's not about what will happen when we get home. And it's not just that I don't want to be alone. It's him. I do not want to lose the boy with the bread.’ “And then he gives me a smile that just seems so genuinely sweet with just the right touch of shyness that unexpected warmth rushes through me.” “One more time? For the audience?" he says. His voice isn't angry. It's hollow, which is worse. Already the boy with the bread is slipping away from me. I take his hand, holding on tightly, preparing for the cameras, and dreading the moment when I will finally have to let go.” “In stark contrast to two nights ago, when I felt Peeta was a million miles away, I'm struck by his immediacy now. As we settle in, he pulls my head down to use his arm as a pillow; the other rests protectively over me even when he goes to sleep. No one has held me like this in such a long time. Since my father died and I stopped trusting my mother, no one else's arms have made me feel this safe.”
Ive never read the books and really didnt care for this movie when it was first announce, but then I watched it and the sequels and damn, they're so much better than I thought they'd be.
It should be noted that these other tributes that you're going to try and kill aren't breaking into your home to rob you - they are mostly good people like yourself who might just be really hard to put down if it's an ugly kill situation like drowning. Pro9bably haven't harmed anyone in their life.
I think I’ve read somewhere the “non dog cat bear “ animal things , even though they don’t say .They were made out of the faces and corpses of the dead tributes which is way more darker.
Hunger Games books should be a series like games of thrones. Gale and katniss are not a couple. They have been best friends since their fathers were killed in the mine explosion. The started hunting together. She is completely clueless. She has no idea he likes her. She also thinks Peeta was great pretending the romance in the games. She has been so focused on providing for her family that nothing else seems to enter her mind. At one point Peeta tells Haymitch that Katniss has no idea the effect she has on people. She is so clueless that she thinks he’s saying people pity her, versus are inspired by her. So glad you enjoyed the movie.
This. Katniss is actually pretty well liked in the district. She is one of those people that at first comes across kind of cold (its on purpose that she has a mask she wears since her fathers death), but if she trusts you she lightens up. She even has a "friend" who is a peacekeeper who jokes around with her.
I rewatch the series + re-read the books every once in a while, and after watching "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," I wanted to go back but didn't have anyone to enjoy it with so reaction channels are a blessing to me😂I really enjoyed your reaction, felt like i was facetiming friends only I couldn't communicate lol. New subscriber😉I'll go watch the rest of the reactions now❤
I was cackling with you guys at the blood smearing thing, that was hilarious. I also don't mind the little spoilers bc you guys still theorize while reacting so it's still interesting
shocked at mair's perspective in that first flashback that she didn't help him when he is the one throwing food to the pigs (and we know that she struggles to feed herself and her family, and in a previous scene it even established that bread is a luxury)
the cruelty of the capitol is the point. the capitol does play favorites with districts 1 and 2, and it doesn’t matter that it’s not fair because the capitol makes the rules. the capitol viewers fully know what they are watching. they watch the reapings, and all the district citizens are required to watch the Games. this is supposed to keep them under the power of the capitol so they don’t rebel again, and it’s worked without fail for 74 years.
Katniss's mom is her biological mom, but she didn't have a good relationship with her because after her dad died, her mom had a mental breakdown and didn't take care of them at all.
@@scahearn6279 I miss spoke. Rye is the name of Peeta & Katniss Son. Peeta is a type of bread. The Mellarks are bakers. Peeta has two older brothers so it’s safe to say that his two older brothers are also named after bread or bakery inspired names.
Each district specializes in a product that the other districts and the Capitol need. District 12 isn’t the worst district, they are just coal miners very far from the Capitol. Other districts produce food or technology so, in ways, they have an easier life. There’s nothing special about being on the 12th floor. The rooms don’t have real windows. So it’s not an honor or compensation to be higher. The Capitol doesn’t think that way. And they don’t care that certain districts train their champions to volunteer or that it isn’t fair to the other districts. But even untrained contestants, like Haymitch, can win if they’re smart. It’s not a surprise that Katniss missed with that first arrow. It was a bow she had never touched before, and it looked metal instead of wood. But it only took her one practice shot to compensate. That’s impressive. President Snow wasn’t upset that District 12 won. He was upset about the way that they won, by threatening to commit double suicide. It made the Capitol look weak, and gave the districts hope. That’s why he punished the gamemaster. And you forget, her salute to district 11 had already caused a riot.
If we bein honest. That girl that died by the berries went out the best way, considering the possibilities, she could have died more brutal, hers seems a bit more peaceful (scary ofc) but could have been wayy worse
50:56 in the book it's explained that the only reason the District 5 girl was tricked into eating the poison berries is that Peeta himself thought they were safe and had prepared them for himself. If they had actively set a trap for her, she would have been smart enough to realize. Her fatal mistake was thinking that Peeta was as smart as she was.
This is my first time seeing your guys channel……I’m 20 mins in and I’m already going to subscribe. You guys are really sharp I like that and it seems like you’re doing the HOTD, I’m a major GOT fan.
SO basically, every district has a mentor, and it is someone who has won from their district in the past. so Haymitch was the most previous winner of District 12, which was the 50th Hunger Games, meaning he has been doing it for 24 years and has seen his tributes die countless times, hence him being an alcoholic (also losing his entire family). and also just a fun fact, when Snow was young and the games were early on, he was actually a mentor for the 10th Hunger Games and fell in love with his tribute who was from District 12. i won’t spoil because the new movie just came out, but this just adds fuel to the fire of his feelings for district 12 and the way Katniss finessed the system.
@@nicolovespandaeerrrrm he definitely fell in love with her. DEFINITELY not the type of love that Peeta feels for Katniss, but still. it’s more of a possessive and controlling type of way. you can tell how much he cared about her, asking to be put in district 12 as a peacekeeper, and the way he wanted to protect her. but in the end, he was greedy and power hungry and knew that lucy gray was in his way and because of that he would always resent her because it reminds him of his past
Gale is not her boyfriend she seems him like a brother not only that bcuz of the way they are forced to live Katniss has mostly cut herself off emotionally from ever loving someone in a romantic way she didn’t want to get married or have kids bcuz look at the awful life they’d have and if she was married and something happen to her husband the loss the pain it’s too much. But because she has closed herself off emotionally she’s not really good at emotional awareness and how to express herself. So even though she’s not romantically into Gale she doesn’t realize or understand that she needs to tell him that. That she doesn’t know she needs to tell him she’s not in love with him. She doesn’t really have emotional awareness very much it’s why she comes off the way she does. She doesn’t even know what her feelings are for Peeta either. So again she doesn’t know how she’s supposed to express herself. That’s why she’ll just comfort them with kisses cuz she assumes that’s what they want but she doesn’t really know what she’s doing.
I say this on a lot of Hunger Games reaction videos but I have always believed that Foxface (the girl who died from the berries did it on purpose). In the training scene she's the one they show to be really good at identifying plants. She probably figured once Clove was gone she had no chance. She's smaller than Cato and Thresh and her district mate is dead so she doesn't have the numbers advantage against Katniss and Peeta. She would have known what nightlock was and knew it would be a quick death. Taking herself out could have put her family at risk but "accidentally" eating the wrong berries. Her family would be safe.
Definitely. And even Cato saying that they're dead anyway is such a sad reality for tributes and the districts. I'm sure she would have come ot that conclusion as well.
Just gonna explain some things since a lot of questions were asked throughout the video. The Hunger Games were invented initially to punish the Districts for their rebellion against the Capitol. Every year, children are sent into the Games and the Capitol does this to send the message to the Districts that "their children are dying because of their rebellion." Children are chosen intentionally for this reason. Every 25 years, there is a Quarter Quell Hunger Games, where they change things up. The first Quarter Quell is unknown but the 2nd Quarter Quell (the Games that Haymitch participated in) had double the tributes. Instead of 2 tributes from each District, there were 4. For the 3rd Quarter Quell, the tributes for the Hunger Games are past victors (as stated in Catching Fire). There are 13 Districts. District 13 was the military and nuclear power District but during the rebellion, 13 was nuked into oblivion by the Capitol and District 2 became the new District 13. Districts 1, 2, and 4 are Career Districts where people are trained their whole lives to fight and when they're 16-17 they volunteer to the Games to "bring glory to their District". The Games are rigged to be completely unfair. The Career Districts are more-so allied with the Capitol so they are treated better than the rest of the Districts. District 12 is the most hated District by President Snow so they are treated the absolute worst. Only two people from District 12 has ever won the Games: Lucy Gray Baird won the 10th Hunger Games and Haymitch Habernathy won the 50th Hunger Games. After Haymitch won the Hunger Games, President Snow had his family and girlfriend killed because he made the Capitol look like idiots during his Game, then they made him into the District 12 mentor where he spent decades watching his students die. He stopped caring about mentoring until he met Katniss and Peeta. Katniss and Gale were never lovers. They met while hunting earlier in life and bonded because they both lost their fathers in a coal mining explosion. Katniss has said that Gale was desired by other girls and she was jealous, but only because she was worried she'd lose her hunting partner. Peeta has loved Katniss since they were kids and intentionally burned bread at his bakery and risked getting beatings from his abusive mother just to feed her and keep her alive. Katniss at first didn't know how to feel about Peeta but after some time grew to love him. Thresh's death in the movie is implied to have been caused by the dogs, but he actually died fighting Cato. It's stated so in the books and I believe in Mockingjay, Katniss said to someone from District 2 (Cato's District) that Cato killed Thresh, then she killed Cato. I don't like that the first movie implies that dogs killed Thresh. Also, fun fact, the dogs in the book were actually the corpses of the other fallen tributes.
Katniss never practiced with her bow and arrow skills during the practices not to show she was any kind of a threat. She is from 12 where she has made her own bows from wood. Her first time with one is during her screening of talent. The bow was metal and she wasn’t use to the weight. She misses the first and gets the hang of it the second time. EVERY reactor has always flipped out on that scene. This lil info is what replays in my head cause I read the book. Feels good to know I have sooo much knowledge, of the entire movie through her thoughts and eyes. Which makes the book crazier thinking everyone is against you. It was a great read!! Extra fun info. She spent like 2 weeks or so in that arena.
Why do they ask each other questions when they both said they havent seen the movie? Edit: The movie: they are scored 1-12 for the districts. These two: she got an 11 out of 10?? Another edit: its not supposed to be fair.... they keep talking about fairness even tho they compared district 12 to the US colonies and slavery. I dont understand how they dont understand lol
The hunger games can be defined as a DYSTOPIAN series. Dystopians are very powerful pieces of work because they can symbolize reality through fictional events that lead into an unknown FUTURE even realistically speaking. People think dystopians relate to apocalyptic thees but they are ENTIRELY DIFFERENT. Dystopians are known to depict fear, distress, tyrannical governments, social issues, classism (many types of -isms actually) in a future that heavily criticizes “current trends, societal norms, or political systems.” The themes in these works are to portray cataclysmic declines in society through rebellion, authoritative enforcement, and uniformed conformity. Very very conventional until someone breaks these ideals and sets everyone else free which we know to be a savior. Katniss is the savior in these series and you will see why as yall finish the movies in order. Dystopian films are my FAVS and there are so many of them…like idk if you guys ever heard of the DIVERGENT series but that is another GREAT dystopian series. It is ALMOST like the hunger games but different in the sense that one portrays a future that is already made for you and another where the person has a choice to make their own futures. Also, I think yall caught on but for clearer explanation, 48:36 he only spared Katniss because due to being in the same District as Rue, which yes is District 11. His name was Thresh. For clear context, in the movie and the book, the girl attacking Katniss (Clove) blurts out that she is going to k!ll her like “we” did to your little friend Rue. In the book, Thresh overhears this and k!lls Clove. Then after that confronts Katniss while yelling to see if she was involved with Rue’s d34th and was about to k!ll her. However, Katniss tearfully tells him how she held Rue’s hand and sang her a song before she passed. She also said she gave Rue a small memorial and that even Thresh’s district sent her bread as thanks.” Thresh lets her go and says "for Rue.” Thresh sacrificed Katniss and without Rue’s d34th, Katniss most likely would have not survived as long as she did because meeting Rue gave her hope, and strength, and Katniss even confirms this in the next movie. There are a lot of theories about how that all could have ended up tbh… but anyways, in the movie, Thresh hears the entire conversation between Clove and Katniss about how Clove’s people the they unalived Rue which allows Thresh to understand how much Katniss cared for Rue. Also, another important thing to know why those specifics distracts banded together is because of this. Cato and his crew were all part of a group known as “The Careers.” The Careers refers to tributes from Districts 1,2, and 4 as these districts are specifically trained to volunteer and WIN the Hunger Games. Ntm, these districts are known to be the richer Hunger Games districts and they are also closer to the Capitol. This comes with connections, bias, arrogance, power, and pride as having more advancements to win the games. Additionally, recently , I also just came across some information that mentioned how each distort were divided by not just social classes and status but even race and/or ethnicity. I found someone who read the book that theorized and explained how each district was divided as below: District 1: “Scandinavian, blue eyes blond haired nordics” District 2: “South European, Italian maybe” District 3: “Ashen skin tone and black hair, so perhaps Asian” District 4: “Mediterranean. Spaniards, Portuguese, Castizos” District 7: “Canadians, French, English” District 10: “ both whites anglos and hispanics, most notably mestizos, with also some native americans” District 11: “African Americans with a minority of white ppl” District 12: “Appalachians people, mix of scottish-irish, cherokees, melungeons, shawnees etc.. With a small merchant caste of blond haired blue eyed Nordics who somehow ended up there, maybe District 1 merchants who got stuck there after the rebellion.” “5,6 and 8 might be a cultural melting pot of everything since they are so urban. 9 we know nothing about… as for the Capitol, I believe they have almost everything, white black asian hispanic etc.” This does come off as true to me though as I do watch the film a lot and re-read passages in the book, the depictions of these factors/qualities become more and MORE vivid.
I just want to put it out there since sometimes ppl seem to miss it; Haymitch has been mentoring tributes year after year and had to see them get killed.
He is seriously traumatized, hence his attitude and drunkness.
Exactly. Anyone who isn't a psychopath would have serious PTSD after an experience like this.
Haymitch also had twice the number of tributes to defend himself from because he was part of the 2nd quarter quell. I couldn't even begin to imagine how terrified he must've been.
24 years of mentoring …. 48 kids he couldn’t save
Thank you for pointing that out. In the book they mention that several times, but it was a mistake to not have some exposition behind Haymitch's demeanor
Also after winning his games and because of the way he won and his attitude. The Capital killed his family and girlfriend.
Peeta saves Katniss more than once.
that happened when Katniss was 13
@@smdownh9 no she was 11
"Why do they have kids?" Its only ages 12-18. Katniss dad didn't die in the games. He would have been to old to go then. He died in a coal mine explosion.
Lmao idk how they didnt catch onto that when prim literally got pulled before katniss
Gale is not Kantiss’ boyfriend. They are close friends though Gale might wish they were more than friends.
they were more than friends
In the books she told Cinna that Gale is her bestfriend and she also refer to him as her hunting partner. She wasn’t open to romantic relationships coz she was busy surviving but then the boys caught feelings and she had to somehow deal with them while she’s saving their lives as well.
@@wremnongsli no they weren't
She comments in the books that a lot of girls like Gale. She’s not romantically jealous, but say she would be sad because “good hunting partners are hard to find.”
@@wremnongsliThey literally weren’t, that’s just what Gale wishes. Katniss never cared about or had the time for romantic relationships.
The dad blew up in a coal mine. The hallucination of the house blowing up is to represent how the mining accident blew up her family, and made her mom crazy. Not literally that her house blew up. It is metaphorical.
right no one ever said anything about her dad being in the games, idk where that came from
The guy from 11 whose name is "Thresh" is supposed to be *huge*, well over six feet tall.
Whoa I never thought about that.
Man now I want a fanfic where rue survives until that rule change announcement and Katniss tells her to find Thresh…
They’re not the WORST district, they’re the poorest.
And all the mentors for each district have previously won their game. That’s why they’re a mentor. Haymitch drinks so much because all of his tributes until now have died.
When he calls them the worst district he’s just saying that he thinks that’s the worst district to live in not that they’re actually bad

The poorest but probably the most essential. 12 mined coal which would have powered the entire counties industries.

Fun Fact: In the Hunger Games three years prior to this movie, the victor Johanna (from District 4) deliberately screwed up in both her training and evaluation portions to give herself an extremely low score to both not make her an initial target and to hide that she was highly skilled with an ax. It was only once it was down to her and few other tributes that she finally unleashed herself and quickly slaughtered the other tributes.
So the score system, while a good evaluation, can be manipulated and should only be trusted hesitantly.
Joanna was from dist. 7 finick is from 4
Instead of being dressed as coal miners, they were dressed as coal itself (and on fire).
Damn 💀
Not faces, it was the eyes of the dead tributes

I gave up on them when she literally said a couple is 3 or 4 lol.
btw, the scoring system before the games is -/12 not out of ten! so she got an almost perfect score, which usually never happens. this is because the gamemakers she shot at wanna put a target on her back, so the careers want to take her out asap

That was a plant identifier simulator? I thought it was a puzzle that hadn't been invented IRL yet.
She didn't though. In the books she was eating and stealing other foods. She trusted peetas food to not be poisoned.
When you guys finish the series, you gotta watch the prequel which tells president snows story!
why spoil it for him though?
District 1: Luxury Goods
Montana, Wyoming & Idaho
Think of Chanel, Adidas, Tiffany’s, Crate and Barrel, Human wair wigs, makeup, etc. all the expensive things in our life)
This results in District 1 being generally better off and closer to the Capitol than most other districts. Its population is wealthy compared to most of Panem's citizenry. This extends to being able to raise and train Career Tributes to consistently win the Hunger Games year after year.
District 2: Masonry, Stone cutting, Military
Near the Rocky Mountains in Colorado
Peacekeepers work closely with the Capitol. They have a good diet, good training and good tech. They’re rich compared to the other districts and produce a lot of career tributes.
District 3: Technology
Cali, Oregon, Utah
This district is pretty rich. They make all the lasers and tvs and holograms and stuff.
District 4: Fishing
Cali,Texas,Mexico
They are pretty rich and they boast the most amount of victors in the hunger games. They can swim and tie knots and catch food
District 5: Power and electricity
[Not sure location]
They are like upper middle class.
District 6: Transportation
Michigan, Illinois
They make trains and automobiles. Even hover crafts. But they are not rich at all.
District 7: Lumber and paper
Washington State
A poor district and small.
District 8: Textiles
South Carolina
They make all the cloth and fabric. They are middle class
District 9: Grain
Wisconsin, Iowa, ND, SD, Nebraska, Minnesota
District 10: Meat
Texas, New Mexico, Arizona
They do all the livestock and slaughterhouses. They are impoverished.
District 11: Agriculture
Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Ozarks,Oklahoma, Kansas
Growing orchards, fruits, trees, necessary plants.
District 12: Coal mines
Appalachian Mountain region, West Virgina, PA, Virginia, Maryland
Smallest and poorest
District 13: Graphite and Nuclear Technology
Maine, NH, Vermont, MA
The Capitol : what was once Colorado
Guess that would make District 5 Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky ✌️😊👍
13 also includes southern Ontario and Quebec (where I live)!
13 doesn't produce graphite, that was a lie told by the capital (i think)
The capitol is actually in Wyoming. The recently released official map shows the capitol placed over Wyoming.
Sophie's spoilers is so wtf, the thing to see reactions is to see how the people react before the knows
Thresh from 11 in the books is said to be 6’6” and an absolute beast. Every character thought he was going to win.
They wont work together to overthrow the capitol if they are in opposition and think poorly of each other
Katniss tied herself to the tree so she wouldn't fall while sleeping. This is standard procedure for hunters when they tree hunt.
26:32 - I need 4 days in the hospital after that tracker injection 😂, and y’all want me to play a game now?
That’s a chupacabra 😂 You two had me in stitches! This was fun. I subbed.
She wasn't used to that bow, it has a different feel and tension than the one she's used to, so she had to adjust to it.
Having the penthouse isn't an advantage. Just a "reward" to keep people in line
Katniss has feelings she hasn't had time or the luxury to process, but the main issue is she still has to "perform" for the cameras so it doesn't matter if her feelings are real or not, that required performance makes her feel fake
Exactly
"To this day, I can never shake the connection between this boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope, and the dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed."
This is the first kiss where I actually feel stirring inside my chest. Warm and curious. This is the first kiss that makes me want another."
“And while I was talking, the idea of actually losing Peeta hit me again and I realized how much I don't want him to die. And it's not about the sponsors. And it's not about what will happen when we get home. And it's not just that I don't want to be alone. It's him. I do not want to lose the boy with the bread.’
“And then he gives me a smile that just seems so genuinely sweet with just the right touch of shyness that unexpected warmth rushes through me.”
“One more time? For the audience?" he says. His voice isn't angry. It's hollow, which is worse. Already the boy with the bread is slipping away from me.
I take his hand, holding on tightly, preparing for the cameras, and dreading the moment when I will finally have to let go.”
“In stark contrast to two nights ago, when I felt Peeta was a million miles away, I'm struck by his immediacy now. As we settle in, he pulls my head down to use his arm as a pillow; the other rests protectively over me even when he goes to sleep. No one has held me like this in such a long time. Since my father died and I stopped trusting my mother, no one else's arms have made me feel this safe.”
Beautiful
Ive never read the books and really didnt care for this movie when it was first announce, but then I watched it and the sequels and damn, they're so much better than I thought they'd be.
if you’re interested definitely read the books. there is full free versions online available. definitely worth your time
read the books! they give so much more insight & inner dialogue for Katniss & the other characters. definitely worth it!
@@violeta373do u know where to read the books online 🤥
Agreed. I'm just now listening to the audio books. They are brilliant.
I think because her cut wasn't too deep when Peeta applied the ointment it was already closing up so all that was left is the bloody salve.
Idc what they say I think it was romantic when he applied it to her forehead ❤
New subscriber😉I'll go watch the rest of the reactions now❤
She tied herself to the tree so that she doesnt fall off and break her neck once she's sleeping.
The savage coldness & "fun" so many had I think is also a hive mind &/or coping mechanism
Their 3 finger salute is district’s way of showing support
Peeta is a baker 🧑🍳. His family are bakers on the merchant side of town in district 12. His brothers names are Rye and another bread name.
I have read the books 10 times I have never seen where any of Peeta’s family members were named.
“Yo he murdered her bad” LMAOOOO that killllllled me
Bruh girl on the left needs to keep her mouth shut on these spoilers... literally gave away a HUGE reveal in the second movie...wtf...
If we bein honest. That girl that died by the berries went out the best way, considering the possibilities, she could have died more brutal, hers seems a bit more peaceful (scary ofc) but could have been wayy worse
44:57 "My MAN is blendin' in with the Rocks!!!! 🪨 😂
Gale is not Katniss boyfriend they are just hunting partners that became friends
Girl, if you know the plot already, at least don't spoil it to your guy!
Sophie has definitely seen all of these before 😄
District 12 is coal miners. West Virginia. Each district has a product, some products are deadlier to produce.
When they said they got the penthouse I think they just meant the top floor lol. Love the video!
SO basically, every district has a mentor, and it is someone who has won from their district in the past. so Haymitch was the most previous winner of District 12, which was the 50th Hunger Games, meaning he has been doing it for 24 years and has seen his tributes die countless times, hence him being an alcoholic (also losing his entire family). and also just a fun fact, when Snow was young and the games were early on, he was actually a mentor for the 10th Hunger Games and fell in love with his tribute who was from District 12. i won’t spoil because the new movie just came out, but this just adds fuel to the fire of his feelings for district 12 and the way Katniss finessed the system.
he didn't fall in love with lucy gray baird...
@@nicolovespandahe kinda did but it was obv not a healthy type of love it was mostly js abt him wanting to possess and own her
@@nicolovespandaeerrrrm he definitely fell in love with her.
Please do the entire series
She's already the main character of the games for volunteering for her sister. You'd think more family would do that after 74 years but they don't.
Also, fun fact, the dogs in the book were actually the corpses of the other fallen tributes.
why did she spoil the next movie , you sure you havent seen it??? 😂
Edit:
The movie: they are scored 1-12 for the districts.
I found someone who read the book that theorized and explained how each district was divided as below:
District 1: “Scandinavian, blue eyes blond haired nordics”
District 2: “South European, Italian maybe”
District 3: “Ashen skin tone and black hair, so perhaps Asian”
District 4: “Mediterranean. Spaniards, Portuguese, Castizos”
District 7: “Canadians, French, English”
District 10: “ both whites anglos and hispanics, most notably mestizos, with also some native americans”
District 11: “African Americans with a minority of white ppl”
District 12: “Appalachians people, mix of scottish-irish, cherokees, melungeons, shawnees etc.. With a small merchant caste of blond haired blue eyed Nordics who somehow ended up there, maybe District 1 merchants who got stuck there after the rebellion.”
“5,6 and 8 might be a cultural melting pot of everything since they are so urban. 9 we know nothing about… as for the Capitol, I believe they have almost everything, white black asian hispanic etc.”
This does come off as true to me though as I do watch the film a lot and re-read passages in the book, the depictions of these factors/qualities become more and MORE vivid.
