I was surprised when Bobby Darin wrote and performed this protest song which is anything but simple The message was powerful then and still is today. Bobby was an incredibly talented singer, songwriter, and performer. I was so sad when he died. He is still missed.

@@lovesixtiesrockmusic5304 That's not entirely true. I was a Vietnam War protester in 1967. In 1969 I was drafted into the marines and got out in 1971. I have always opposed all our military incursions. of course most politicians are afraid to oppose sending our young men and women to fight in every shithole in the world. Also add to that those politicians who gladly take large donations from the defense industry.
Sing this simple song of freedom, True then , True now. Let it fill the air, Tell the people everywhere, We the people here, dont want a war.. great words from a great man.
One thing about Bobby Darin is that he could sing anything and did.... This is so beautiful and so moving, best ever version... Bobby was the greatest singer of them all in my book, I loved him as a child of four in the mid 1950's, have done ever since...... He always sung from the very depths of his own heart and soul giving 1,000 percent and every bit of himself and then some.... Bobby was not afraid to write a song about something that meant a great deal to him and to sing it so movingly as well..... I am not sure if people know this about Bobby, but he marched for equal when he felt it's cause was important to everyone.... Someone mentioned about Bobby Darin not having a grave.... The answer is that he donated his body to science, so shortly after his passing his body was moved as to his request which Bobby made long before his passing.... The lyrics and music of "Simple Song of Freedom" is just as powerful today as when it was first recorded, way to go Bobby.... I still deeply miss, remember and love the greatest singer / entertainer of them all and of all time, Mr. Bobby Darin.... No one does it better that the great man himself, Mr. Magic as we called him here at home...... THANK YOU BOBBY FOR LEAVING AN EXTREMELY DEEP AND MEANINGFUL IMPRESSION ON OUR LIVES FOR THE BETTER YOU ARE TRULY THE MASTER WHEN IT COMES TO MUSIC AND YOU LEFT THEM ALL IN YOUR WAKE, BLESS YOU BIG GUY.... REST IN ETERNAL PEACE BOBBY DARIN.... YOU ARE LOVED TO THE MOON, THE STARS AND FAR BEYOND.
I was in Navy boot camp 1973-74 and went to church on one of the Sundays and the minister told us during the service that Bobby Darin had died. I was deeply saddened to hear of Bobby Darin's death. Mr. Darin is still missed.
A truly great songwriter, singer and a visionary to write a song like this. The words are as meaningful today as they were then. Sadly taken much to early.
Powerful song, powerful entertainer. Mr Darin squeezed so much life into such a short, TOO short earthly life. I still remember where I was when I heard of his passing. Such a shock. He is sorely missed. RIP, Bobby!!! You're still loved, sir!
Listen to these words as Bobby sings them….. They are just as powerful today as when he origionally recorded it….. These words always touch a cord and brings you up short to think of what is happening out in this world of ours today…. REMEMBER, "WE THE PEOPLE DON'T WANT A WAR"…… A very relevant song today, after all only those who make the war weapons become rich and life does not come into the equation at all, to those people only ' MONEY COUNTS ' human life is expendable…. Such a true and sad fact….. The sooner we as a people stand up and be counted the better, make your feelings known to those in power, don't be lead blindly like sheep to their death….. Bobby Darin is the greatest performer ever who wrote, sang and spoke from his heart about what really mattered to him, people as a equals in everything in life….. Bobby's message will live on as the greatest song to imposer people, to stand and be counted in this life…… I will always remember and love Bobby Darin for the way he knew how to touch a people and bring them together as one….. Bobby as this rich warm emotional mature vocals that stands out above all others…. RIP BOBBY D.
I don't get the Daryl's reference, but I agree, and then some. Bobby Darin IS still current. His many recordings, studio and live, and his own compositions especially, are still the very best that I can find. And I listen to many genres, many artists. Nothing in the 20WORST century is equal to Bobby's greatness.
They still do, but the mainstream won't allow them to be heard. I don't think the music on pop radio today is intended to make people think and educate themselves on important issues.
I asked my Mom what she thought of Dean Martin a few years ago, I heard she saw him and was excited to get the scoop since I was turned on to the Rat Pack during that whole swinger fad in the 90's. All she could talk about was how great Bobby Darin was.
He was the real deal. Knowing he would not live long he never wasted a minute venturing into every type of music. Although a noble act to donate your body to science as he did, I guess it seems he is still with us as no cemetery to visit, and to fans he is forever young. Can't get enough of Bobby D.
He tried to sing different songs before his death and not everyone could accept this. No matter what Bobby Daring sang it was great - died way to young at 37. But he sure gave to the audience even when he had to go off stage and take in oxygen due to his bad heart.

As long as money, profits and military are involved, it will be the death of the human beings. Capitalism and the will for power over poor people will destroy us all. Greetings from Germany.
At the time he sang this, he was a slick Vegas performer, whose audience supported the war. Which was not only unjustified, but involved the draft. So it wasn't simply a topic for political discussion. It was life and death or damage for many, many guys out there. So to then hear a song of support of such passion from a star like Bobby, who was saying that he was supporting us instead of the establishment that he had been performing for, said a lot, and meant a lot. And earned him a lot of gratitude for crossing over to the side affirming life. And he put on a hell of a show, too.
There is one good thing about the draft: It's all too easy to be a hawk and slap a yellow ribbon on your SUV or minivan that says "I support the troops". It's not so easy if it's your kid that is going to get called to fight and die in a pointless war.
DrSamba Sadly, the draft had been in place since 1940, and by 1960 it was a large, standing army. Like any loaded weapon, it begged to be used. Thus, the dreaded military-industrial complex.

I shed tears when I hear Bobby Darin sing this song. He's my favorite USA entertainer. He was extremely talented, and, with a conscience of gold. Destiny took him from us way too soon.
A transplant would’ve been unlikely, he died in the process of getting a bypass operation so if that had been successful I think the combination of good medications and yearly follow ups would’ve prolonged his life a good 20 years
