But I had no idea of Mr. Darin's place among protest writers/singers. I don't think I'm alone in this. Somehow, Mr. Darin wasn't remembered for this. And G*d knows, he wrote & sang powerfully.

Right, Judith McRae (see below). Bobby did look relaxed and happy while his audience looked downright comatose giving him no reaction to his performance whatever. WTF! Darin sang 'em all rock, folk, standards, pop along with a touch of country now and then (18 Yellow Roses). He was a songwriter, drummer, played piano, guitar, harmonica and probably more beyond those instruments. He was a performers' performer. He deserved better from this mummified audience and, fortunately, got it with his own TV show audiences nightclub appearances.
Agreed, living down under, we weren't as privileged to get to go and see live, but still appreciative for TV/Radio. Much like those German audiences when performing over there, much the same, like cardboard cutouts. But in the audience defence, I know when I have been in an audience, we're told to be this or that, so perhaps they were also. Bobby was an old soul, brilliant, wonderful, with a blissful voice. Very much still missed in the physical world and his style of music.
Did you notice how cheap the seating is? You have mature people trying to sit comfortably with their knees up on what looks like no better than hard school gym benches. I wouldn't be in such a good mood either after sitting cramped like that for a few minutes.
