- Copa Airlines is the flag carrier of Panama, and operates a 100-strong fleet of only Boeing 737s.
They’ve used Panama’s geographic location in Central America quite strategically to turn Panama City into a huge connecting hub between North and South America.
When my friend @MarkBrandonAviation proposed a trip there in January this year, I thought it was worth giving Copa a try to go visit a part of the world that I’d never been to before!

Flying to Panama I always recommend booking seats A (left side) of the plane to have the best view of Panama city when landing
That will always depend on which runway is being used, which in turn depends on the wind direction.
@@lucasa.quiroga1246which most of the time is 03R or 03L, so the recommendation is valid. On the other runways there is no view really so it’s best to always strive for that seat when flying to Panamá.
Flew on Copa’s B737-800 from Washington Dulles and then their B737 Max-9 to Buenos Aires! All in Business Class, their lie flat seat was amazing, and I couldn’t believe that I was on a B737! Very cool experience!
Panama City-Buenos Aires used to be the longest route in the world flown by a 737. It was since beaten by a few miles by Panama City-Montevideo.

I love Copa. Honestly one of the best airlines in LatAm. Almost always on time, solid service, good airplanes and lots of connections.
But I dont, they are so racist, cuz when you go to the seats almost at the end you’ll get some plain stupid boring seats, we don’t care if it’s cheap! It’s a waste of an hour

Took a flight with copa Airlines in May to the Dominican Republic with a 8h layover in Panama. My flight was great! Loved it!!
What was great about it?
I’ve flown Copa about a dozen times the last five years, and I wouldn’t ever call a single one of those flights even subpar.

You sit, wait for food, sleep, watch a movie. what were you expecting??? a royal treatment and an announcement from the captain that you were onboard??

I believe copa continues to use the continental branding because like united they are star alliance
By that logic though, every airline in Star Alliance should be using a variant on the United livery 😅
@@coyotelong4349 well Copa was branded like continental while the other airlines are not. So it was probably cheaper to keep the same branding.
No, copas is slightly different from continental. Both airlines were very close during the 70s-80s.
At almost the end of the video you can see Copa's livery for the national football team! Has the red and white colors and federation crest. Hope you enjoyed your stay in Panama!
Copa just started service from Raleigh, NC to Panama City. Never a place I thought of going, but now that it's so easy, i'd consider it.
As a frequent COPA flyer, I have truly enjoyed every single time I've flown with them. However, the Panama Airport lacks!
I remember that before the pandemic they used to have 2 meal services in their long flights. Still, compared to north american carriers, Copa is great
Copa Airlines flies direct to Toronto from Panama City-Tocumen, using a mix of 737-800s and MAX 9s!
I mean with the choice of Montreal as your stopover, getting to Toronto from Calgary would also be 4 hours and the flight to Panama City would be around 5 and a half hours
WestJet does direct flights from Dublin and Edinburgh to Toronto (6-8 hrs) on a 737!
Sure, but it's ultimately a difference of 30 minutes and Montreal worked out better price wise.

@@Northernmike100 I have atcully, and they excited my expectations, getting on times, comfortable seats, they atcully give out complimentary snacks and drinks, on time, fact early. But that is irrelevant due to the video being about Copa Airlines.
We've been to Panama a few times. Panama City has more skyscrapers then New York City and spread out for miles.
Special meals in COPA are only offered in Business Class (flights longer than 2 hours) except Gluten Free that is required by law to Argentina. So, don't expect much from them.. They implemented this policy during COVID and now they make it standard.

I have flown with them from Medellín to Orlando (layover in Panama City PTY) and I love them!
I visited Panama in March and loved my time there, flew on Copa out of ATL and it was a great flight, business class Copa was cheaper than economy on Delta.
I’m gonna be going through Montreal airport in two days from now

On my way to Costa Rica in 2020 I scheduled a Copa flight with a layover in Panama City for the main purpose of seeing the canal. Hope you got to see it as well!
Wonder if Copa will change their livery to almost resemble the bluer livery currently on the majority of United’s fleet.

I flew on Copa Airlines Retro Livery and Star Alliance Livery in the same day!!! My inner avgeek was literally dying of excitement! 6.5 hours on the Copa Retro Livery really is something special. It was from PTY-DEN on June 9th of 2024! Great Video!

I have flown Copa many times as we are residents Panama and always go home to visit friends and family in Canada. Fortunately we are from the Kingston, Ontario area, so a train ride to Montreal or Toronto is no big deal to get to the airport. I'm 6'3" and don't fit well in those economy seats, so I don't know how you did it at 6'8". Being that tall precludes you from judging just about any airline seat, except business/first class. However, I did enjoy your video and will watch more of them. We usually book early and pay a bit more to get the bulkhead seats just behind business class, with lots of leg room.

Copa uses Panama to connect North and South America in the same way other airlines use Iceland to connect North America and Europe.
I live in Chicago and have always wanted to fly them to visit Bolivia, where my family’s from originally.
I've seen Copa Airlines before here at Montreal and its fun finally watching someone review the airline flying from here
I had a 5 hour layover in Montreal’s international terminal last summer and was thoroughly unimpressed. Can’t imagine how bad the domestic side is
I flew Copa DEN-PTY-MVD Montevideo, Uruguay. The leg PTY-MVD 7:20 felt really long in a 737 economy. Flight was full as well, but I slept. There was no personal IFE except on the last leg PTY-DEN which is 5 hours so very welcome, but would be nice across the flight spectrum. All in all, good value friendly crews and overall great experience
Another great video Alex! For another full service flight I'd suggest the AeroMexico flights that have catering and service that puts AC to shame. We flew them from Vancouver to Mexico City and were pleasantly surprised by it, having experienced both WS and AC flights to Mexico prior to that.
Was there any price difference? I'd factor in the cost of Air Canada Bistro into their ticket to see how it compares to AeroMexico
@@briankenney1433 the Air Canada flight was actually more expensive when we booked it funny enough, but WestJet was cheaper. The timing for the Aeromexico flight was also more convenient
I have flown to (SEA-)PTY many times, from as far back as the Continental airlines days, also on Delta and United. Copa was the most recent and as Alex says, the service was very good. Fortunately on the r/t in economy, the middle seat was open both ways. I will definitely use them again, as family becons there.
COPA has a 48-hour StopOver in Panamá City if you want to see it before resuming flight to your destination.
It's a 6 night max Panama stopover over option without buying an extra ticket.
That was a very Ryanair-like landing lol. But still, any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.

CM added RDU-PTY last month with surprisingly the 73G. They do not have the seatback IFE so for those alone it would be nice to see the route upgauged to at least the 738. It wouldn't surprise me if YVR or YYC were on their radar as CM and AC being Star alliance would provide connectability on both ends of either route.

Wonderful trip report. I can't imagine being your size and sitting in THAT seat! I'm a full foot shorter than you and feel cramped on the window seat of a 737. It's a little bit better on the A320 as they have a bit more room at the shoulder and usually have slimmer seats. But yeah, if I were you, I wouldn't board a plane if I wasn't in premium economy or better. I hope you enjoyed your time in Panama City.
Thanks for another great video Alex. I haven't flown Copa, but I have been to the Panama City airport, and I found it quite decent. It definitely had more shopping options than most airports. I think they even have two distinct terminals- one for Domestic( Copa?) and the one I was in for AC
Flew Copa Business Class LA to Aruba in late April and flights were on time and comfortable. Also flew
Copa from LA to Buenos
Aires back in 2019 and
it was also a good experience. I’m 6’3” so I have to fly business on longer flights and Copa business class is very reasonable.

I flew COPA in 2000 from SJO - PTY. I’m 6’1”, and I couldn’t tolerate the seat pitch back then either even though it was only a 1 hour flight. I don’t know how you were able to endure 6+ hours.

Those seats are the exact same as united use on their newer 737 interiors. I find them pretty uncomfortable on longer trips
Also can you explain to me how you got to the Tocumen Airport Open day 0:24? I'm in Panama for 2 weeks and I would like to know how to reserve tickets or something.
We were asking a few locals about spotting locations and they mentioned they were holding an Open Day the exact weekend we were there.

I booked a flight via Expedia with COPA in 2023 to Panama from California for a birthday celebration($750). However, due to civil unrest happening there at that time, the celebration was canceled for safety reasons. However, because COPA was still allowed to fly and land in Panama, they would only issue a flight voucher. That’s when the headaches started. Expedia told me they could not refund or use the voucher because it’s COPA’s airline system, so I would have contact them. In 2024, I called COPA, after being on hold for at least a half an hour, a rep answered, i explained, and transferred me back to the call cue. This happened multiple times. Finally was told i could use the voucher to fly to Panama-first time i was told this. Finally booked my flight, after they charged me an additional $491! Well, due to the various time differences, I missed the flight. They wanted to charge me another $400+ to rebook the flight. I can’t. Now I’m out of $1241 and voucher is no longer available. I’m now in process of contacting their corp offices before filing a complaint with DOT, and will file a small claims case if necessary. 🙏🏾

I spent upto 6 hours on a 737-800 but it was on a Virgin Australia plane, like..... never again, so damned cramped., flight arrived late and didn't leave any time to catch a connecting Virgin Australia flight for my second leg journey. More likely to choose Qantas for a better option🛫
As a frequent flyer on Copa, I can say that your enjoyment on any particular flight is a crap shoot. I recently flew from Miami to Panama City in business class with the dream seating. The flight attendants were a huge pain in the ass and it was not an all a comfortable flight even with the very nice seating. On the other hand, my connecting flight from Panama to Paraguay was on an older plane without in-flight entertainment. Our flight attendant was the best and even though it was a much longer flight, it was a better, more comfortable flight.
copa is great! but when i took the flight from montreal to panama the food was pretty mid.(i had churros)

How strict is Copa on personal item sizes?? I’m looking for a back pack that matches the dimensions on the sight but most of them are one to two inches off and I would hate to mess this up 😅
Genuinely curious, why did you not want to transit via the US?
I always thought United owned Copa or had some type of dealing with them.
I’m Canadian and Montreal is my Mothers home town, as well as what I consider to be an awesome city.
That being said, YUL is one of the worst Airports in Canada. Ottawa, Calgary and many others are so much better!
YUL reached capacity in the 60s, it's why the white elephant/auto racing track Mirabel was even built.
