Flying on Lynx Air's Final Flight

  • In the early morning hours on Monday, February 26th, Calgary-based Lynx Air sadly ceased operations.
The news came just a few days prior on February 22nd, when the airline revealed that they had filed for creditor protection, with operations slowly winding down over the weekend.
Up until Sunday the 25th, you could still book some last minute tickets, and in the name of documenting history and giving the hundreds of talented individuals at Lynx Air the send-off they deserve, I grabbed a seat on the last YVR-YYC flight.

From someone that knows... take my word, an airline shut down is extremely emotional for the employees. Throughout our years we accumulate a lot of good memories and some bad ones too, but mostly good. This industry is one like no other.

Agreed. However in this industry chosing your employeer wisely is pretty important. Far to many nieve folks dont know the cutthroat nature of the airline business. Lynx never had a working business model and was financed using someone elses money while competing against not only WJA in YYC but ACA in YYZ.
I knew several folks who quit the larger, profitable, stable airline in YYC to go work for lynx. A shortsighted maneuver that gave them a few weeks of a better scheduale vs their former employer. Flushing years of senority down the toilet in the process. The good news for Lynx employees is that everyone else is hiring.

14:42 - That final "tap"... I worked for more than 4 years at "Avianca Brasil". The airline went bankrupt in 2019 and I was "forced" to leave. In 2022 I found out that a "junkyard" in the city of Campinas had an A318 that belonged to our company. I went for a "visit" and it was one of the worst days of my life... Something about the vibrant red cabin that just had a full load of passengers going to a cold, dark cabin just hurts my aviation soul. I'm an airport worker in Tampa, and I just about cried the day after operations had completely stopped at Tampa, but the Lynx flight was still loaded into the system and showed up on the departures board. No gate, no ticket counter, no staff or plane in sight. It was a sad sight indeed. Rest in peace to Lynx, and may their crew find wings again.

Speaking from experience, the emotions are even more intense when it’s a national carrier. My grandparents worked for Malév Hungarian Airlines, and my father and I both wanted to fly for them. I legitimately cried when they announced the airline went bankrupt and the emotional black whole that’s been left as a result is still present to this day. Many people, me included still hold onto the memories made from the days gone by. Watching this video brought back many of those same feelings I felt back in 2012. "Unfortunately this is the last day of our operations. We've been connecting Canadians for the last two years with affordable low prices......This is your Calgary based crew at Lynx air, now signing off. Thank you and goodbye." I am touched here though I am never a fan of ULCC.

You don’t need to fly them to be happy they exist, competition lowers pricing on the big guys too

I don't cry. But damn why is my eye sight so blurry...?!
You will be missed Lynx, sadly I never had the pleasure to fly them. For anyone who is Ex Lynx and sees my comment... I hope you were able to find a new airline to work for!
    Thank you!

Really sad to see any airline leave and honestly my speech to text won’t let me say the name but I only heard about it. I haven’t really seen on flight radar, but it’s always sad to see something

While i wasnt able to fly a final flight I spent the 25th watching for the final departure from YYC, to toronto. Got a cool pic of it coming off of the runway

I know how it must have felt to be on a final flight - I was on the final flight of Flybe after their brief return from bankruptcy a few years ago...
It was actually a ferry flight t get the plane away from creditors and managed to get on it and the Captain permitted me to come to the cockpit as I was the only passenger (technically not permitted) and listened from the jumpseat as Manchester Airport's tower went "For the final time, Jersey 666 cleared to land" and made the smoothest landing ever

Alex great video as always. I wish there were more commentary about the business and regulatory conditions that lead to Canada having the some of the world's highest domestic airfares. When you look at the tax and NAV components of the ticket they are absurdly high compared to other jurisdictions, and this alone affects the appetite for the market to fly within Canada. On top of this you need to compete with the existing oligopolies of AC and WJ I'm surprised new carriers even try these days. We are in a pretty sad state of affairs.

C-FULJ was the first plane I flew with Lynx back on a trip to Toronto last year. Such a shame to see them leave the sky.

What about another airline that didn't last very long, called "Canada 3000' which was mainly a Snowbirds flight from Vancouver to Mexico and other Warm Destinations.

It is too sad that we missed out on flying with them, I was planning on taking Oriontheaviator to see family in the spring with them 😢 we where on Vacation when we heard this news 😢 so I couldn’t get him on one of their last flights,
    It happened so fast 😔
