How The Gym Challenge Could CHANGE For Modern Pokemon

- Gym challenges have been generally the same throughout the Pokemon franchise throughout the majority of its run. Someone requested to know how I would like to change said challenge! Let's talk about this!!

The Steven Stone style "themed" teams is such a common attitude when it comes to Fakemon Region creators designing Gym Leaders that it's basically a trope. I think that kind of proves how strong of a concept it is.
We need the USUM champion title defense system back. It genuinely feels as if our title of champion means something, and it would connect the flare of the anime to the games. Imagine this, you have a battle against the champion and defeat them, then become champion, you start to feel as if you are basically untouchable as the champion, only for a random trainer or your rival to challenge your throne and seek to be the new champion, if they win, they become champion instead and must defend their rank as champion, if they lose, the person who beat them gets that same rank until you defeat that champion and prove yourself worthy of being champion, it keeps us on our toes and provides the challenge we need. It also makes all NPC's more relevant and give them a chance to achieve what you achieved
Funny thought about your "point system" thing
In Blueberry Academy lore, students in the terarium are said to gather points by battling other trainers (Different from BP mind you). Points go up by winning, points go down by losing and for the BB Students who accomplished enough points can have a chance to fight the BB Elite Four
Reason why this wasn't explored becaaaaauuusse we're the main character and get the blessing from the Director, Paldea Elite four and Champion to immediently go ahead and fight the BB Elite Four right from the get go lmao

Alternatively, they keep the type-theme of Gyms but also gives it a secondary theme.
Like the Electric Gym would still be the Electric Gym, but it would double as a computer theme, so the Pokemon, while still would also be dual typed with the second typing fitting into that theme.
Love the gym theme idea. It could be dog themed or a gym focused on speed.
The tournament would also be good for replay value as you would have to defend your champion title next tournament.
The point system can work depending on how big Gen. 10's region is, it could work with DLC, or with new online battle competition. Also, it would be great if NS2 had street pass feature & certain locations with free WiFi access for anyone that would go outside of his/her home to play, socialize, or compete. Lastly, with those things put in place maybe certain businesses might have more people come around, buy things, & hang around for specific events.
Personally I’d like both a tournament and the Elite 4. Like you have to win the tournament in order to earn the right to challenge the Elite 4 and the prior champion for their spot
Main thing they need to do is make them themed and not type specific.
And if you can tackle any gym from the start have level scaling
Something that really bothered me in pokemon Scarlet and Violet was that we couldn't rematch the elite 4 and champion if we wanted to, except in the post, post game. We could rematch the elite 4 and champion in other games, but not this one (S and V). It would have made the game more fun if we could rematch them. I really think that (since we're on the subject of rematches), they should bring back the VS. Seeker. That would be great! Or if the game developers would give us an easier way to get money in the game, that would be fantastic! It's hard to buy all of those expensive battle items without enough in-game currency. 😕 If I had my way, I'd have someplace in the game like the Battle Chateau or Hotel Richissime, where you can earn a lot of money quickly. That would be awesome! 😎✌️
Have the Leaders use PKMN that are related to whatever job they have or theme they're going for. Or if you do wanna stick with Type Preference, then give them more than one type, again, related to their Job/Theme. Like how Cilan and his bros Type Preferences collectively are tied to them being chefs who run their own restaurant. And have the E4 and Champion be based more around Battling Styles to set them apart from the more straight forward Gym Leaders.
If we were too ever to get a hard or challenge mode again, i would want rules or restrictions put into the gym/e4 battles. Eg forced set mode, auto weather or terrain for type themed gyms, using same amount of pokemon as the gym leader, level cap, ( your pokemon would be scaled down if over leveled.
One thing I would love to see is rematches to return for Gym Leaders it added replay value plus they were stronger to.
the point system is basically just ladder ranked with 1000+ participants except the final 8 at the end of the season are the only ones allowed to scrap
the ferrum region (pokken tournament) has something similar to this with their battle trainers (yes that's what they're called) but i prefer the victory road & preliminaries a bit more
like i think the point system for a single region is cool, but the whole world? and we're allowing anybody (with no badges or symbols) to compete??? made it feel weird for ash to step up with fresh catches for early fights to the end without occasional assists from old pkmn throughout the season, but that's a different matter altogether
generally speaking though, similarly to the beyblade metal series, i do think the point system could work as long as the participants are all registered at the start of the season
I think it would be amazing to have both the tournament and the Elite Four with a champion like how it is in a lot of the regions of the anime (hoenn, sinnoh etc.). It would be really cool to have to do an entire tournament after going through Victory Road just to get the chance to battle the Elite Four and Champion in a gauntlet to prove you truly are the strongest trainer. I like both aspects so adding them together and still making the elite four battles a big show (make the areas we battle them grand in scale and have rotom cameras televising to the entire region!)!
Oh this could just be a one-off thing but it would be super cool to have to battle a seemingly random trainer and have them become very relevant in the post game (thinking like a Zinnia cameo in the tournament where she's testing your power before the Delta episode etc.)
One idea I have had since Sword and Shield is what they tried near the end of the game being Raihan's whole gimmick being weather. They could try doing the normal tyoe based gym stuff again, but maybe try to put some more creative spins on it like some of the fights in SV did.
Maybe a double battle like Liza and Tate, but they use rain with Water and Electric types.
Or like with Klara and Avery's fights where the battlefield is automatically poisoned or psychic'd from the start, so you have to think about playing around those disadvantages to turn the tables.
It would be cool if gym leaders had strategies based on abilities or battle mechanisms. Raihan using sandstorm was a great example of this. Most people who play pokemon have been playing for a while. We know type matchups. Even if we didn’t the game tells us now. Testing our ability to combat different strategies would be a nice step up.
I would like to see more battles that aren't single either. From what I can remember only 3 gym leaders do doubles. None to triple or rotation. Inverse was cool and they should bring it back for a gym.
Imo the most logical change would be to make Raihan the base design
So many people forget that gyms have an *in universe* purpose to test trainers knowledge
Groups of completely random Pokemon don't test you on anything
But using Raihan as a base to test on notable battle mechanics *first* and a type second would make even more sense in universe than the current set up
For example: a "Dark type" gym leader who test is on item's and their usage, all of their Pokemon would have the Dark moves like Thief, Fling, and Embargo, and abilities like Magician, Sticky Hold, or one of the many berry based ones, and their ace would obviously be a Dark type but only the ace is guaranteed to be that type
-A Grass type gym leader who's test is about status ailments and how Grass types are immune to powder moves
-Another Weather trainer but base them in one of the Sandstorm types but they use all of them and the abilities that give you an immunity without the type like the Sand Rush dogs
-A Terrain based Gym leader, probably Psychic, spamming Expanding Force
-There would obviously be one gym leader who's test IS on the type chart
-A "Room" based trainer
-An Electric trainer that's double battle based for Plus and Minus
-A stat based Gym leader who primarily operates on in battle stat changes like Intimate use and setup moves like Dragon Dance, or Quiver Dance, have a White Herb on one of them with Overheat or Draco Meteor to show the value of those moves snd items that tend to dominate competitive but have very little use in a general playthrough, make em fire with their ace as an Intimidate Parting Shot Incineroar

Linear is still fine. You can have at least 4 max Gym Leaders you can face in any order. It worked for Kantō like Matis, Erika, Kyou, and Natsume.
I like the idea of themes but I still think they should all try having some primary type otherwise gym leaders will just feel like slightly stronger regular trainers
Another idea to mix up the gym leaders is to have them specialize in a certain stat. A gym leader that specializes in hard hitting Pokemon. Another that specializes in physically bulky Pokemon, another that specializes in fast Pokemon, etc.
Don't limit people from leveling their pokemon early or unable to even try to get it. I really don't like that. If I caught a high level Pokemon let me use it.

Not a fan of that. I get wanting to use that random overleveled mon you caught out in the wild, but I also don't want to just be able to just steamroll a Gym with one. At least mons you get from Mystery Gift like the Shiny Beldum from ORaS had the issue of disobeying you if you got it too early. I don't think that applies to caught mon with your ID, even if they were overleveled.
Would be cool if your champion if you lose a battle you lose your title and you have to win it back
What about archetype based gyms. Some use single battles some doubles some focus on hazards some on weather some on certain terrains some on trickroom or batton pass some on stat boost set up. Some on stall. Gyms that focus on a particular strategy in mind and use a lot of Pokémon of a spacific type but not just that one type like maybe half of a trickroom team is psycic but the other half are types to cover those or make use of it.
I think you could sign up to the regional league and you can go on your phone and see if you can find trainers near you and how much of a rank increase you would get from beating them and once you get to a certain rank you can challenge your first gym
Top 3000 first gym
Top 1000 second gym
Top 750 third gym
Top 500 fourth gym
Top 250 fifth gym
Top 100 sixth gym
Top 75 seventh gym
Top 50 eighth gym
And then once you beat the eighth leader you have to reach the top 32 and enter the Pokémon league win the league then challenge the elite four and then the champion to become the new champion
max level trainers and wild pokemon with ev iv training. wild pokemon battle each other they should be able to grow. no reason we cant have strong trainers also. makes me not wanna battle. i dont jus want to battle online. dont jus make a battle space. i want it through out the game. i would seperate the gyms from the main story. we should be able to play the main game and the gyms are their own thing all together. they would prolly needd to rework the badge affects to something else. they culd attach it to friendship instead. the gyms should feel grand and feel like an accoumplishment along with the elite 4.
Honestly changing the gym challenge from type theme to whatever theme would be beneficial from now on going forward. Like for example maybe one of the next gym leaders is a manager for a mall of some kind and so they have 6 pokemon that represent specific situations for the mall.
Say a Luxray for security (thanks to its vision), a Gardevoir/Blissey for meet and greet, a Armorouge for helping in the kitchens, a Vanilluxe to help with ice cream, a Garbodor to take out the trash (or eat it in this case), and Leafeon/vaporeon to keep the plants around the mall fresh.
I despise raid battles.
Then you are in the minority, most people like them.
