Red cj7. Installed 2300 fusion, 11t pinion, DX5 Rugged raido, traxxas trx4 shocks, orange dot springs with 80w shock oil. Ssd steeles wheels with brass rings. 3brothers anti foam on stock tires. I was surprised the rock lines I was pulling.❤
Glad to see you got one of these. I thought you’d be surprised. If I had to pick 1 word to describe this CJ7 RTR it would be “cool” because it is. I’d love to see what the 2 speed actually looks like as dig isn’t a function I use. Looking forward to what you do with this one. Take care.
Lol spot on. When I orderd mine I got the fusion pro 230kv. Paired to dx5 rugged 5ch. Still getting back into hobby having to re learn everything 1/10 but this is a beautiful setup. Hope to see more vids on you're build . 👍..... My steering servo broke in 5 min in parking lot lmao. On the search for a good upgrade swrvo now . Anyhow catch ya next vid
Love your honesty in this RTR review! AXIAL released the FORD BRONCO at $579.99 and Closed them out at $299.99 to reduce inventory. I wish RC manufacturers would offer an almost RTR truck that you install your own Electronics of choice! A seasoned RC enthusiast does not want to keep buying entry level electronic Krap. Please do an improvement video on this truck showing what parts make the biggest improvement! 👍
I think the stock power system is actually really good! Low gear super slow crawling! No need for electronic swaps. You got to turn up the drag break on the esc
When we moved we used a ton of Horizon Hobby boxes because they're the thickest and strongest. Definitely something you break down and stick in the corner of the basement.
That box is unreasonably thick considering that it's whole purpose was to hold... another box. I had a welding table (that weighs 80lbs) come in a thinner box than Axial uses.
I got the 10.3 Bronco, mint color, for my daughter when price dropped to $300 because of the color and I grew up with an early Bronco. To date I’m in it $500 with wheels, tires, reefs sway bar, Traxxas stock 90mm shocks and fusion 1200 se. Yeah.. made a massive difference. I almost,, ALMOST forgot it was an axial there for a moment. 😂😅 Servo is next to be swapped out. 🤘🏻
I got it at $300 too. I love it so much. My servo striped so already got a new one. But yeah, away bar makes a huge difference. I added some brass and 3d printed scale goodies. I feel like the stock power system is really good though. Great low speed control. It’s not a performance crawler so I don’t see this need for a fusion pro or something.
Really surprised you picked one of these up. Have one myself, and those goofy shocks never made the first battery pack. Tossed a set of 90MM ProLine Shocks in there immediately. Definitely looking forward to seeing how it treats you after you reward it with better stuff.
Same one I bought. I have already changed all the electronics, greased the tranny, etc. I also have a set of 90mm GTS shocks on the way for it from Jenny's as I hate the way Axial shocks leak and the stock ones are too long. It would be nice to be able to buy this with out any electronics as the first thing most do is rip them all out.
I wish Jenny's parted out more rigs, including Axials and Elements. Might be the closest we ever get to getting kits, buying torn down RTRs piece by piece.
I literally just modified my dads 10iii early bronco dig yesterday. Out with the old s107 with a springy servo saver, in went a hitech 645mg, solid servo horn, and a pivot ball linkage.
You nailed everything right on the head even before you took it out., your review of this rig out of the box is spot on with everything, this rig is made for scale adventures but like you said many of us will make it do what we want it to do, I feel the price is spot on, I am almost immune to $300.00 half filled grocery shopping carts and $80.00 dollar gas tank fill up. I wanted to run mine stock config on the first run, but the area I was going is very rugged and I knew it would be a struggle bus if I did not do something to help it out. I originally dropped shocks to lower links then put them back and strapped rubber bands on all 4 corners, that helped a lot but not enuff it took away a lot of the squishy side to side feel but not enuff, this rig really does need to sit low with a proper set of 90mm shocks, it loves to just lay over on its side. Body is for scale adventures, with way to many snag points specially the windshield area for hard crawling, the rig loves to go nose up in an attempt to roll over on itself The dig was very frustrating, and the motor would just bog down to almost a stop when the rig was in a pinned situation, I assumed all this going into it. I think the fun will be improving its performance thru upgrades and watching those upgrades work. I really do wish they would stop with the 2-in-1 receiver esc.
Just installed that clip less system on my CJ7……..I had a really hard time putting the clips back on…took all the fun out of running this rig…..without the clip less set up I’d either sell the rig or it would be a shelf queen.
Great review dude! Couldn’t agree more! My first 1/10 crawler was a gladiator so I have a soft spot for it….. man I had to pour a lot into it to make it perform to my liking and keep pace with my other rigs. Appreciate ya and ur time!
I trimmed about 1/4 of an inch off the plastic fender liners and the body just drops right into place now. So much nicer. Also that battery should fit fine on the side, mine does. But the Velcro strap gets in the way. Another thing that I trimmed up a bit and made a little slimmer so it doesn’t interfere
I love how honest you are and that’s why I subscribed I’m also sick of RTR’s I much rather buy a kit so I can learn the vehicle and also put my own worthwhile electronics in them
That’s for the info by far the best channel I have seen for reviews no lies just truth I want one just to make a clone of my real Jeep to take to car shows and do some trails
Just grabbed my cj7 this morning. Already dropped 80w in all 4 corners, weighted wheels and relocated the lower shock rod ends on the same as the links to drop the jeep down. Love this beast already but.... the front bumper mount limits options for aftermarket bumpers and i grabbed a lightbar but its far too short. I think i measured around a 6.5" length to make it work 🤔
Just buying this body now is priced higher now like around $200. Just got the base camp builders kit and it has a central motor and trans on the center skid. Also have trouble with the dig being stuck with tension on it. Would have to get a higher torque servo and have it direct servo horn and no servo saver for it to pull itself out of dig under tension. All in all I think now it’s worth the $500, because converting my base camp builders kit and then getting the body would and the price of the chassis kit itself would cost a lot already. $280 for the builders kit, wheels, tires, cj7 body, that would already be around the rtr price. Then I’d have to modify it to fit cuz of the trans and motor. I’d rather buy the RTR and spend a little here and there to have a nice trail truck and keep my builders kit for a performance build.
Good review as usual, very thorough. I must agree that the body is awesome, however, the electronics for me are a missed opportunity. Axial should have given us separate ESC / Receiver so we could easily upgrade.
Your lucky getting it for the price you get it in the uk this is £500 we pay a lot more and those clips are going to be fun when it’s covered in mud great video keep up the good work also it’s not in stock till the 20th of January here
None of my rigs have ever been on wet grass or mud. I have 26 rigs 11 Fusion Pro and never had one fail until now. Aliexpress never got factory approval from hobby wing.
I love the look of it and wanted to get one when they first came out ( No much rocks around me anyway ) BUT what turned me off was the over 800$CAD price tag.. Thats more than a TRX High Trail.
Nice Review! I really like that body...but I'll wait a year or so and maybe pick up the body kit and add it to a $250 rig that I assembled and love it.
That is one lovely looking car 🤩😎 Not my cup of tea, but very nice. I'm curious to see what you all going to do to make it perform to Canyon standards.
I will stick with my JLU that took me 3 years to tune to the exact performance I want with a fusion pro and 90mm shocks. Its still a trail rig. This body sure is pretty though. But I am not spending the money again.
I'm off Aliexpress myself due to a Hobbywing Fusion Pro warranty issue. The verdict is still out. It's less than a month old and I have been waiting over a week for a response.
I have an idea for you. if people in the canyon community wanted to send you their rig, for the official canyon rig review. would that be something you'd do? I think it'd be interesting to see and hear your thoughts on rigs within the canyon community. I'm sure shipping a rig to you would be pricey but i think it's a fun idea. Is it possible and would people be willing to do it, no idea. Just thought I'd throw out there. Great video as always.
It's been done a couple of times already, so yeah. The Fordyce was sent in, I borrowed the Honcho and the Bushido, etc. Just be aware-- any rig that shows up here gets the once over, and repairs/corrections will be made as deemed necessary.
OH btw you may notice the body does not sit all the way down on the left side. The plastic loop on the left edge of the battery holder that the strap goes through hits the under side of the door sill. I cut mine down 1/8" and now the body sits all the way down. Programming does not help the drag brake, it is the worst I have seen. I have now gone to a 2300 Fusion.
Worst you've seen, you say? Well, now you have my attention. The SC480X + Reedy Crawler 540 has basically non-existent drag brake, no matter the adjustment. I'll have to put a suitable programming card to this one and see what it does at "it's best."
SUGGESTION: For the beloved From The Comments vids, Brazing vs. Welding. My RC work area is my front room...single guy...and while it is convenient to braze on a large piece of railroad plate, I find success 50% of the time. Like I have to re-prep the parts and braze the joint again. I'm not quite ready to get all invested in a welder and build a weld station out in the garage. Then the headache of going back & forth between house and garage. First world problems. LoL.
Just my opinion but brazing in the garage is going to be easier short term. Mr Canyon has a flux core equipped welder, as do I, and while you can make it work, it is essentially wire feed stick welding. It can be a challenge to get a clean looking weld on small parts with flux core so building up and grinding smooth is the easier way with that method. Moving up to MIG is more investment and TIG is another step up the money scale. Buying a nice welder for just RC parts is a lopsided investment if you aren't doing other projects with it too. In my current living situation, I don't have 220 in my garage, so my TIG is dormant until we move again or invest in that addition. I am not sure our current panel and service will support a big outlet so it may not be something that's easily added. You also should get a decent part of gloves and a welding mask is absolutely required. The arc is bright enough that closing your eyes for tacks is insufficient to protect your sight. I've gotten sun burns while welding in short sleeves, so keep in mind the investment is more than just the welder and wire. Knowing what I know about welding and that stuff, I'd probably buy a small bottle acetylene kit that would make short work of anything RC related. Acetylene will provide quick heat to braze too. Another thing to consider is, are your parts on the plate while heating? That plate will act as a massive heat sink and suck all the heat out of your workpiece. If you can mount it elevated off the plate, in a small vice maybe, that should help. Another detail I learned the hard way brazing is I have to get the work hot first, then apply the filler. If you're melting the filler in your flame vs it melting when touching the work, often the work needs more flame. You may know all that already, so I don't mean to come off as condescending in any way
All good points for discussion from the Canyon himself. LoL. I used to weld at a local power plant over 10 years ago. Mostly boiler tubing and a few support structures here and there. I live on a small hobby farm, so the welder would be large enough for most work. I have a dedicated stick welder for anything of heavy gauge.
@@chrispearce9224 Oh yeah with a farm and shop, you'll get good use from something like a MIG. Less splatter and you probably don't need the high current. You'd be able to weld on thinner material too with less worry of blowing holes in it
"it's a great traill truck" has come to mean it doesn't perform very well. A real trail truck still has to climb and have good balance. But you're right, for new to the hobby or the RTR only customers it won't matter and that's the market. Is the body miles better than the injora hard bodies?
I have the spectrum radio dx5 would it mount to the all in one and check out the program card to see if you can get work. Hobby Wing card. Just asking?
Time to throw them wheels on baseline and see what they can do lol they would look good on my trx4. If that's a smart esc you have to use the smart spektrum card unfortunately
I wonder how much better it would be if you just change to desert lizzards and injora silicone with the stock tire. my thinking that it would be significant enough to run the electronics till they burn, then fusion some time later. how cheap can you make it great?
Your channel is an idea i had around the same time, need a neighbor with scrap concrete. Thank you for the help, I send people here as often as possible for tuning and reviews. Running class 1 tusk on 30mm wheel, injora 2stage center with 2 loops of fridge foam. Canyon specials are amazing. Hope to be a member soon
You could move the lower shock position down to the lower link mount with a 25mm long screw thru the shock rod end then the le lower link. It will lower the ride height about 10mm. Something maybe to try before throwing 90mm's on it.
I mean, it works-- but it will still be oversprung (with the 1.4lb body, no less) and they'll still be leakin'. If I'm gonna pull 'em to put on appropriate springs and throw in Desert Lizard seals to make them less leaky, I might as well just put 90s on it. I don't understand Axial's fascination with hundreds. They put them on the BaseCamp kit, and they did not fit that rig at all.
@@mfnJOSH I have a drawer full of them from buying several sets of Desert Lizards, so I can't say. I know that on RPP the seal pack shows as "discontinued by the manufacturer," so that's not promising. These Axial shocks are leaking... pretty severely.
@CrawlerCanyon yea. Ive never had much luck with any axial shock. I have an entire organizer full of them. It would be nice to make them useful some how.
Its the equivalent of $640 over here in the UK 😬 Literally they just change the $ to a £ sign but keep the same numbers after it with RC prices over here😢
Pretty much. And the Early Bronco was just a rebodied original JLU 10.3. Much like the Falken Edition over at Vanquish, Axial must have a whole lot of those 10.3 mushboxes lying around. Gotta get rid of 'em somehow.
So a newbie could plunk down $500 and have a blast running trails until they go online to have us experts explain why they’re wrong for feeling satisfied with it. Welcome to the hobby 😅
I think the real issues isn't we so-called experts, but that the starting point is rising higher and higher. The rig alone is $500-- plus batteries, charger, etc. Want 2-speed? That costs too. But yeah, some noob would have a blast until they tried to do anything remotely technical.
Axial found A way to sell their old tech via a new body . They're selling their new bodies for $500 basically. Can't sign up for that trickery. Will wait till one of these rc chop shops sells the body on eBay 😂
They’re not giving you the rigs yet so you can be like Siskel and Ebert, “honest about them”. But I can’t help but think about a 4 years younger Mr. Canyon, late one night on the internet. The Traxxas add pops up for the TRX4 Defender and it instantly got purchased…. It wasn’t so much the toy but how the toy makes us feel… It takes you back to a place where you were, or perhaps you want to be… There are people who will buy this R/C vehicle and be reminded of the Cool kid in High school that had one, and for a moment can pretend how it would have felt to be that Guy… Or, He or She may just follow in your UA-cam footsteps. “There is nothing wrong with that”. Because we are in America, there is a reason all the immigrants come running here. We’re a man or a woman can make a living video taping themselves playing with Toys. God bless America, and The Canyon!!!
I have never been a fan of the SCX III simply due to the 2 speed trans, there isnt much of a difference in the speed change and that to me is worthless and not worth my time or money.
OH, the gearbox is terrible. Luckily though, that horrible gearbox is mounted to a skid that's just flat with two holes in it. It's easier to gearbox swap a 10.3 than maybe anything else. They may have finally fixed the AR45, so there's an upside.
Shocks are too long and need to be moved to the link mount. ESC can be programmed with Hobbywing programmer and that's the fix for the drag brake. Settings are horrible stock. I just wonder why Axial ruins such a beautiful body with that ugly cage. They need to get rid of 1/4 lb and give it a cage you would actually see on a Renegade.
Red cj7. Installed 2300 fusion, 11t pinion, DX5 Rugged raido, traxxas trx4 shocks, orange dot springs with 80w shock oil. Ssd steeles wheels with brass rings. 3brothers anti foam on stock tires. I was surprised the rock lines I was pulling.❤

I'd love to see a TRX4 '21 Bronco with a weighted set of bead locks and a good tire on slick rock.
Never mind you just answered my question!!!!!
I dry-fit the Injora silicone in the tires-- it's a near-perfect fit.
Love it. Can not afford it.
Passes the Kondo test in the way a V1B Bugger might, but a 1/24 crawler won’t, hey? 😉😂
Ive been lookong around. Wheres thebbest place to get the desert lizard seals?
@@CrawlerCanyon they bought those 100s probably in bulk 😂
@@mfnJOSH I have a drawer full of them from buying several sets of Desert Lizards, so I can't say. I know that on RPP the seal pack shows as "discontinued by the manufacturer," so that's not promising. These Axial shocks are leaking... pretty severely.
@CrawlerCanyon yea. Ive never had much luck with any axial shock. I have an entire organizer full of them. It would be nice to make them useful some how.
Going to btc?
Its the equivalent of $640 over here in the UK 😬
Literally they just change the $ to a £ sign but keep the same numbers after it with RC prices over here😢
Oof. That means AU/NZ are probably close to a thousand.
Isn't this the exact same set up as the early Bronco, which was also a very scale, good looking but heavy body? I like it but seems like a repackage.
Pretty much. And the Early Bronco was just a rebodied original JLU 10.3. Much like the Falken Edition over at Vanquish, Axial must have a whole lot of those 10.3 mushboxes lying around. Gotta get rid of 'em somehow.
@@CrawlerCanyon I feel like it'd be a better purchase if it came ar45 portals instead of straights
You can buy the xf trans by itself. Comes pre built with overdrive
You can indeed-- I've bought two (and did a video on it, jussayin)-- but you
What’s this xf transmission you speak of?

I think I’ve come up with a perfect name for the new rig. “GQ Joe” “L”
This body on the pro chassis with od. No dig or 2 speed.
22:16 haha yeah it was KICKING today
The shocks are soft because they probably leaked all their oil before you opened the box.
Hmm, maybe i can get the body separately and put it on something else
Rochobby willy 1/6 are much nicer👌.
What would be a good rock crawler with a shitty body for 500 dollar?
It wasn’t so much the toy but how the toy makes us feel…
It takes you back to a place where you were, or perhaps you want to be…
There are people who will buy this R/C vehicle and be reminded of the Cool kid in High school that had one, and for a moment can pretend how it would have felt to be that Guy…
Or, He or She may just follow in your UA-cam footsteps.
@@CrawlerCanyon That is good to know, still not sure I would waste my time with it. I am a big fan of my Ecto so that is going to be hard to beat.
Shocks are too long and need to be moved to the link mount. ESC can be programmed with Hobbywing programmer and that's the fix for the drag brake. Settings are horrible stock. I just wonder why Axial ruins such a beautiful body with that ugly cage. They need to get rid of 1/4 lb and give it a cage you would actually see on a Renegade.
weird review
Put 5000mAh battery and 2 rasslers in it and the ride height will be perfect. 🤌
You ain’t lying 🤣🤣🤣
