s4n714g000 you may have a point, but I for one don’t expect a politician to know everything. In fact I would be deeply suspicious of one who claimed that they did. After all, a minister may hold several different briefs during their career, for example one who was moved from defence to health can’t be expected to know everything about both subjects. What I would expect them to do is appoint competent advisors who can provide technical insight and advice, and make decisions based on that. In this case, however, it would seem that this particular politician is far out of her depth. So far in fact that she doesn’t know what she doesn’t know. A classic case of the Dunning Kruger effect.

@Israel Hands pretty far actually, they are very efficent one swedish Submarine managed to go from sweden to the USA without ever going up during a NATO test
@Israel Hands so i researched a Bit
During a NATO test this Submarine was able to Land multiple critical Torpedo Hits to a Aircraft Carrier wich is actually way better then just beeing fast
Additionally, while doing that it stayed under water for 2 weeks without emmiting the pollution of its Diesel Motors in Order to stay undetected
2 Things you misunderstood:
1. It doesn't matter that they charge their batteries with the Diesel Motors If they then use electric engines for their propulsion
2. I never said it was quicker then a nuclear sub i didnt say it was able to go further Heck i didnt even say its better then a nuclear, i Just said that Diesel subs obviously are viable
Sorry for my writing i am German and my Phone keeps correcting my english words to German words wich doesn't exactly Help...😅
@Israel Hands Diesels are not U-boats. The Gotland that we’re talking about can remain submerged for 2 weeks. It’s much quieter than a nuclear submarine (no steam-flow noise) and, get this, it can stay surfaced until it’s 2 weeks away from target
@Israel Hands On electric motors, a modern D/E can be significantly quieter than a nuclear
@Israel Hands And yes, it can run the diesel underwater. It utilises a Stirling engine running off of liquid oxygen stored inside the submarine when submerged.

Nuclear can stay submerged usually 3-4 months.

@@bestdjaf7499 Not really true.
Deisel subs can stay under water for days, not hours. Moreover, battery technology has advanced so far that I'd posit that it's very possible, given the information is classified, that it could be weeks.
Even then, the sub doesn't need to surface, it just needs to snorkel so it can pull in oxygen to run the engines, recharge the batteries and deep dive again.
It's pretty obvious that as far as submersion time, nuclear subs are superior. But as the gentleman said, there were many aspects that went into the sub selection, and I'd wager he's far more able to speak definitively on the decision than any of us.

QemeH I believe she was being sarcastic . Because of the past failures of the Australian Navy in its Submarine arrangements.
@@QemeH that's actually just about what she asked. Let me reword it for you: she asked if the submarine should have a pump-jet. The thing that makes a ski-doo go forward in lieu of a propeller. Then, in the same sentence, she asked if the submarine will be a diesel submarine. That means it will have a diesel engine. The thing in a ski-doo that makes the pump-jet work. So, the Barney-level explanation out of the way, let me reword the question more correctly: Are you going to get a ski-doo, or a ski-doo? You know, personally, I'd go with a ski-doo, but if you really think a ski-doo is going to be better, whatever. Get the ski-doo.
Sure. But that knowledge isn't common sense for submarines the same way it is for cars. She's not an engineer, and it isn't a failure on her part to need to ask questions about submarines work. But it IS a failure on HIS part to cop a snarky attitude with a democratically elected senator.

Without skipping a beat, the admiral responded with “No congressman, that’s not one of our concerns”
That's a funny story but really not in the same category. Johnson really was asking about whether the island had the ability to host that many people without destroying the environment (and I guess whether it had the economic capacity as well, though he didn't say explicitly). The Admiral's response was that stationing 8,000 Marines would probably end up adding a total of 25,000 persons to Guam's 175,000 existing population.

@@landshark000068 So you believe that a diesel submarine can remain underwater for 35-90 days without running its diesel to replenish it's breathable air and to charge the min storage batteries?
@@SaltiDawg2008 independent propulsion diesel
Diesel can stay underwater for a few days, maybe few weeks if they conserve power and propulsion is knocked out. Batteries will only last so long having to power all that life support, and there's no way to recharge them without surfacing. Using snorkels doesn't count as "not surfacing". Nuclear powered submarines need refueling once every several years but underwater stay time is bottlenecked by food supply for the crew.
@Jimmy Submarines don't go underwater because they wage wars there. They go underwater to use bulk water thickness as an invisibility cloak, so they can sneak up on unsuspecting targets and execute a surprise attack. Using snorkels haven't been effective at concealing surfaced submarines since mid-WW2, it will not do anything to prevent AWACS from detecting the sub - it has to be dozens of yards underwater. And if enemy knows of your attack, you might as well use surface ships which are far better equipped and far less vulnerable than submarines. So no, using snorkels has no benefit whatsoever beyond using the water as a shield against bullets.

Ah, Hank Johnson, the one man in American politics that you can factually say has brain damage, because prior to being elected he contracted Hep C and suffered through something called hepatic encephalitis, which basically means the virus starts eating your brain. Fortunately for him, and unfortunately for everyone who's downstream of his decisions, once he got elected to Congress, he gained access to the kind of uber-tier medical care that allowed him to be basically cured, at OUR expense. All for performances like that one.
How do you primarily get Hep C as an adult male? Intravenous narcotic use and gay anal sex... why do you ask?
But there are jets based on Guam, so clearly there has to be a connection, because magnets.
I think the current social distancing guidelines will help offset the weight of ppl gathered in one area of Guam, to prevent it from tipping. More scientists should encourage this distancing for the foreseeable future there.
Somewhere, there's a tree producing oxygen just for her benefit. And I seriously think she owes it an apology!
Or maybe the Australians should fell that tree. ^^
She's far right, so she's definitely wasting more than one tree.
The tree isn't producing the oxygen. The inlet intake is equivalent to the pump jet when the expulsion of new molecules enters the atmosphere. Therefore the tree, is a pump jet.
Ironically most of the world oxygen is produced in water, where apparently subs can only stay for 20 minutes!
(joking aside: Trees produces about the same amount of oxygen as they consume when they decay. It's the plankton in the ocean that produces the worlds oxygen. One more reason to preserve the oceans)

There are rocks in the Outback that have more intelligence that this Senator. The fact that she even asked the question of whether a sub may not be able to stay under water for 20 minutes or 3 days supports that statement demonstrably.
All the comments are critical of Pauline Hanson. However, four years after this inquiry, Australia is looking for a way out of this $90 billion program, looking at other alternatives, and refitting the aging , troubled Collins class subs to tie them over the troubles with the French sub.
In retrospect, they should have taken more notice of Pauline's concerns.
@@beans656 The fact that Pauline was on the right side in the argument doesn't make her right if she is there for wrong reasons.
Pauline's concerns weren't realistic problems that you can't take seriously, it was more complicated as you said
@@rkanava7245 1. Oh? And just what are those wrong reasons for Senator Hanson being there?
I thought she was there to represent ordinary inarticulate people, who know virtually nothing about submarines, but just want to know the truth about the black hole into which billions of their dollars are disappearing.
2. You say, “Pauline's concerns weren't realistic problems that you can't take seriously” (I might point out that there is a double negative in this statement, and it actually means the opposite to what I think you meant it to say, however I will reply to the statement which I think you intended to make)
Firstly, Senator Hanson asked why they only considered diesel subs, and not nuclear. This is a very pertinent question, as Australia has the third largest Exclusive Economic Zone in the world to defend, and is so dependent on shipping. Australia’s present Collins class diesel subs have to come to near the surface to run their generators every few days, which make them susceptible to detection. Also, because of Australia’s vast oceans, the present subs undertake operations of up to 70 days, with half of that time spent getting to and from their patrol area. With twelve French diesel subs, it is likely Australia would only be likely to have one sub on patrol on post at a time. With over four million square miles of ocean (not including that which Australia claims in its Antarctic territory), that is ridiculously inadequate. Alternatively, a nuclear sub can stay undetected, submerged, on post, almost indefinitely.
Now I don’t know the costs of nuclear subs cf diesel subs, so that is why we need people in our parliament, like Senator Hanson, who are prepared to ask these stupid questions
Also, her question about how long the French subs can remain submerged was also very pertinent, for the same reasons.
Secondly, her question as to why did they chose a sub that was mostly theoretical, and a long way from being tested, was also very pertinent. Four years later they are still a long way from being tested.
Thirdly, her questions about pump jet subs was also pertinent, as this is a large factor in how detectable these subs are. Before Senator Hanson asked this question, I didn’t know what pumped jet subs were, so we need people like Senator Hanson, who will ask these questions.
Fourthly, because this video only showed the part of the questioning that made Senator Hanson look stupid, we don’t know what all of her questions were.
3. You say, “The fact that Pauline was on the right side in the argument doesn't make her right” What??? Just because she is a red haired, inarticulate woman, that ran a fish and chip shop; does that mean she can’t be right?
If you think articulate people in smart uniforms, speaking authoritatively are the only ones who can be right; then you would be a keen follower of Hitler, Stalin, or Chairman Mao
