I feel like, even if you can't afford a lot of ingredients, the key to good oatmeal is having a good balance of sweet and salty. I usually only can afford to buy a little bit of fruit as a topping, but then make sure the oatmeal is seasoned with a bit of butter, a pinch of salt, and a little sugar. It sounds simple, but *the pinch of salt is a must for oatmeal that doesn't taste like cardboard.*

In Japan they'll use leftover broth from hotpot (leftovers of meats and veggies also welcome) to make ojiya or zosui. Just heat it up, add one or two raw eggs, and leave to boil for a minute without stirring. Then add a bit of cooked rice and stir everything until rice falls apart. The amount of eggs and rice is to your taste. More eggs will make it thicker and lessen savory and spicy tastes. But rice will absorb the moisture over time, especially if you leave it for a few hours. Adding a lot will turn it into oatmeal. So add little rice if you prefer more soupy texture.
I guess you can do the same with oatmeal instead of rice. It'll probably have to be cooked a bit longer though. Maybe like 3-5 minutes.

Also *savory oatmeal!* Oats work really well with savory flavors. I like to make mine with broth instead of water, add a bit of hot sauce or sriracha and top with an egg. But I’ve made it with freshly grated parm, toasted pine nuts, and a bit of olive oil, have made it with soy sauce, have used leftover French onion soup, and more.

Why pour sugar into healthy oatmeal ? Here’s what I do to make my oatmeal good and maintain its healthiness, it actually even adds some health points.
I mix a serving of chocolate peanut butter powder (sugar free) or sugar and oil free peanut butter, add roughly half a tablespoon of butter, then mix, top it off with some diced walnuts, a little bit of fruit (I prefer sliced strawberry and a drizzle of honey.
Always comes out good and is packed with nutrients.

My personal fav tip: Right after the oats are done, turn the heat off, whisk up an egg, and gradually add it to the oats while stirring constantly. It gives them a wonderful custardy texture and adds some extra nutrition too!!

But adding an egg to the mixture and then baking it is amazing. I like to add some fruit (berries or banana) and/or dark chocolate chips. It’s like a breakfast cake and it’s ready when I’m done with my morning workout.

Okay but here’s how to make my current favorite oatmeal:
Depending on how big of a portion you want add your desired amount of oats to a bowl (or a pot). Pour the double amount of oatmilk into the same bowl/pot and add as many cut up apples as your heart desires. Give it a couple of minutes in the microwave (or cook it on the stove) until it reaches a thick texture. When it’s done you can add some skyr or greek yogurt on top for a bit sourness to the sweet oatmeal (trust me it’s delicious) and there you have your oatmilk apple oatmeal. It’s very filling and It’s a delicious mix between sweet and sour great for someone with a sweet tooth like myself!

Idk about ya'll, but I prefer my oatmeal much thinner and soupier. I'm really not a fan of that goop consistency.
If you cook it on the stove for long enough, it turns into very satisfying thick strachy liquid. I like to add salt, sugar, diced bananas and cinnamon.
ALWAYS salt your oatmeal. It is terrible without salt.

Use real milk, I know Kevin likes Hasan Piker, but that doesn't mean you have to be a labial tick as well. Also, adding your sugar and fruit in sooner also helps amp up the flavor.

I steep dried cherries or cranberries in the milk as I warm it on the stove along with a handful of chopped nuts. Then add the oats, cinnamon, pinch of salt, flax powder, & chia seeds or protein powder. At the end I add a bit of honey to adjust for sweetness & top with a banana or granola so the soft texture doesn't get monotonous. It's so good 🙂

I top it off with desiccated coconut, nut butter, sometimes chia seeds. I also like to I add cocoa powder to the pot or chunks of chocolate to the bowl, it tastes amazing.
