God, how I adore her. She was so kind to a very young, naive student. She did not have to even talk to me, let alone sit with me and talk and laugh. It has meant the world to me.
She was, and still is a beautiful person.

During this time the second scene at the inn in act one at the MET in the Bing era was cut. Very unfortunate especially for the baritone who must wait for half the opera before singing a note. Cutting this scene also leaves the mezzo portraying Preziosilla with even less to do. Besides this by including the inn gives a bit more characterization for the baritone to portray. In Merrill‘s case this made no real appreciable difference since character delineation was never one of his strong points. Still he had to cool his heals & keep vocally limber until his protracted entrance. A year or so after he left the MET restored the second scene in act 1 & I believe Merrill learned it for his complete studio recording with Tucker. As far as I know he never performed this scene in a live performance. This was also the case with Warren who added this scene only for the studio recording with Milanov & Di Stefano. Here In this live performance Merrill is still in pretty good late MET career form, vocally speaking, which was a consistent virtue in his career. The tenor here is new to me but with Tucker & Corelli still around early on his lighter instrument fails to make a notable impression in this role but I have to hear more from of this performance to make a more concise evaluation. Flagello is sonorous as usual & still in his best period, IMO. At least all 3 tenor/ baritone duets are included & Merrill‘s FINALMENTE is memorable as always. I just listened to, a bit of the second duet & still wish Tucker especially had been on hand. Cruz-Romo is in comparable form with the other performance from around this time that I heard & she adds further distinction to the proceedings.
Ion who?
Good points. For me Buzea was always overparted. An Alfredo at best.
