  • Episode 5 of repairs on my Wife's new Golf Mk6 (K5) .
I recently bought a Topdon OBD scanner to find out why the check engine light has come on and it diagnosed fault code P261A, a failure in the auxiliary coolant pump.
A replacement pump was bought for £50 (not genuine VW so may not last long) and in this video I show you how I changed it.
The engine in this car is a 2.0tdi.
This may be the same process for the Mk 5 Golf and for many other VW group cars of the era (Skoda, seat, Audi etc) with the same 2.0tdi engine.
I hope you find this video useful and remember to check out the other videos on my channel for more car repairs. Like and subscribe if you like what you see.

You've the best mix of stuff - first saw your video on Buchanan street station, then Roman Holiday filming locations, now water pumps ;-)

Great video bud. Was your coolant not circulating properly? I would drive and when i stop the expansion tank had almost been sucked dry, then when i open the cap it instantly fills back up! I will be doing this job here shortly

Thanks for the kind words mate. My car was showing no symptoms but did have an engine management light on. Scanning for fault codes brought up the failure of the auxiliary coolant pump that you see me changing in this video. Is there any chance you have an air lock in your radiator or heater matrix that is causing the coolant level change when warm?

      Have the same problem.
      With the airlock.
      How did you fix it?

I’ve been told there is two coolant pumps. One at the back of the engine and one at the front. Which one did you change in this video?

There is the traditional coolant pump that cools the engine and is run from the timing belt and this one, the auxiliary cooling pump. This one is electrically powered and helps push water through the heater before the thermostat has opened and can circulate coolant with the engine off to cool down a hot turbo.

At the same time as doing the water pump I changed the oil level sensor. It was due to be a video on its own but hasnt happened yet.

I swapped the pump and cleared the code and it has never returned so I guess it was the pump at fault.
