This was Labor Day, 1989...the last episode I watched before starting 4th grade the next day. Scrabble in the summers of 88 and 89 were a huge part of my childhood 🥰

September 4, 1989 was the day reruns of 227 started on NBC, replacing the daytime Win Lose or Draw, which on that day started its new season with new set, host and rules. I think September 4th was when NBC started running that game show promo for Scrabble and Classic Concentration. It was bizarre, Chuck and Alex appear as boxers (their heads on cartoon bodies).

    Those sprint words were tough.

No kidding; a long time could very well hold up.

They were tough words, but it didn’t help matters that the D came up for the first contestant (first letter of the word), and did not come up for the second contestant. It may have been a random selection, but it really didn’t seem fair for the second contestent to be forced to guess based on not having the first letter while the first player did get that first letter.

@@philipalt9560 The only thing that remains the same is the first two letters.

@@wschmrdr You would think the way it was set up that they could have fixed it so that the same “last letter” doesn’t show in the shuffle for either player to make it more fair.

He wasn't even close to a double pick, Chuck.

I wonder if Chuck is going to get letters for his bad impression in crossword two...

OK, who taught these producers how to spell? "BEKINS"? I have the same argument with when they do "MANNIKIN" instead of "MANNEQUIN". It makes no sense.

Psst: "BEKINS" was a well-known trucking/furniture moving company for about 100 years 😘

@@lobstertexas OH, I see. See that makes sense. I thought they meant "BEACONS". That's why I immediately thought of the bad spelling of mannequin.

@@SapinskiMath Ah.. I had reasoned some folks may think BIKINI at first as the letters started to fill in (since it actually fits before the E and S appeared .. despite not making much sense 🙃 ) but, you are absolutely correct about "MANNIKIN" (and "MANNIKINS" .. they actually did this TWICE!) ..
