The orchestrator is the lead guitarist Christos Antoniou. "Christos studied composition at the London College of Music under the guidance of Martin Ellerby, Head of Composition department. Acquiring his Bachelor of Music in 1999. He continues his studies in Composition/Orchestration earning his Master’s Degree in Concert Music."
I LOVE Septicflesh! So this is a band from Greece...singing in English...performing with a live orchestra in Mexico City. If you like symphonic metal...Septicflesh is about as epic as it gets!
I was expecting a cannibal corpse clone but I was blown away. I don't know the last time I have been this pumped to find a new band. Thank you again, Geebs and fellow followers!
If you're up for another, I'd suggest Septicflesh - Dogma of Promethius from the same live show, it shows off the orchestra much better in my opinion, as well as utilizing the choir :)
I'd definitely recommend you check out some of their other tunes! This is almost a "Radio Hit" for them in comparison to the rest of their discography. Songs like "The Vampire From Nazareth" and "A Great Mass of Death" both feature great use of the orchestra and feature some sections that are just downright unsettling. Regardless it's still a really cool surprise to see you checking them out!
Most Septic Flesh records have orchestration and they rise the musical experience tenfold. Such and underrated band. Glad to have caught them live a few years back, snall venue with no more than 200 people, the energy was the same as in this clip.
Surprised to see this in your channel, but very pleased you gave it a shot and enjoyed it! This whole concert was cool to watch. Love this band. Keep up the great work!
I'm so glad you did a video on SepticFlesh. I was actually at this live recorded show in Mexico City (you can see me in this one actually -_-), and it was SO AMAZING live. You're right, it was taken from the DVD, the singer was actually pretty unhappy about his monitor and they way they had things hooked up for recording and complained he was missing the audience aspect for himself as a performer during the show, but the return on the recording quality was very worth it imo. What you don't see in this video is there was also a choir. SF pretty much always has an orchestral element in their music (I genre them as symphonic death metal). As everyone else already kind of said, one of the band members is actually a composer. They generally record in studio with orchestras/choirs, but this was their first show with those elements live. I love how you pointed out the orchestra members who were rocking out, I actually was watching this one violinist and another choir chick super into it. I think I was more impressed by them than the band when I was there not gonna lie Z(I have seen SF live a few times, but never like that time in Mexico City for this). Was really cool to see/hear you break it down, I like listening, but I don't know much about music in regard to theory etc. I enjoyed getting the opinion of someone knowledgeable. I hope you got to check out some of their other songs. They have so many good ones. I recommend another from this live show where you can also be awed by the choir ;)
So happy you enjoyed this one and keep digging for more! I'd suggest "Oceans of Grey" for the next one from Septicflesh, being a more atmospheric, layered and orchestra based piece. Still here!
This is my favorite reaction of yours so far! This live version is almost note for note from the studio version. Though they don't typically tour with the orchestra, this is the original version of the composition. Many good tracks from them, though you'll find this big symphonic sound more prevalent in their more recent music. Other bands to check out along these lines are Rotting Christ and Dimmu Borgir.
The orchestra is really on board with the band, I watched this whole DVD and there were a lot of times when the orchestra musicians grooved, headbanged and even threw the "horns"! As to suggestions, if you want to explore more of Septicflesh, I cannot recommend their 2008 album Communion enough, it was recorded with an orchestra, so the mix is even more tight and epic.
First experience with this band, never would have come across them without you Geebz. At face value I probably would have disregarded, but you perspective has opened my third eye. Thanks as always and mahalo
So happy you enjoyed this performance from Greek Symphonic gods! The main composer is Chris the guitarist, he wrote all songs and orchestral parts as he has a shit tons of musical degrees , check on their UA-cam channel, there's plenty of short vids where they show all different parts of writing, recording and mixing the last album, also the recording sessions with chores and orchestra.... Chicken skin guaranteed 🤣 many thanks for your dedication, passion, analysis and facial expressions ( a guy should start a channel analyzing reactors faces while listening to new bands 😍). Huggs from France!
I've seen Septicflesh live, albeit w/o the orchestra. So good! I just want to plug Epica again. They have two live albums where they feature a large orchestra and choir. The first disk of their album Classical Conspiracy is made up of orchestral classics and movie theme music. Their album Retrospect is their 3 hour 10th anniversary show. It's hard to know where to start, but the closer, Consign to Oblivion, is still, to this day, the song that best captures the 'essence' of the band. Thanks for continuing to share your excitement and expertise with us!
Dude, as a Greek myself, I loved watching your reaction to my country men! I actually know all these guys :) The orchestra arrangements are made by the guitarist in dreadlocks. I would love to see your reaction on my own band. Check out Acid Death - Reality and Fear. It's kind of a technical death thing that I know you will love digging into!
Hey Yassou, I'm half Greek from France (& talked already about them on my website's Playlist/Music pages), love this band & I'll be curious to check out your as well (...) / I just checked your channel & subded, nice work, buddy ! Orea...
@@chrthm27 Sorry i struggle to read Greek now, I apologize (early studies, I can understand speaking but not reading) can you answer again in English please ?
Hope you do mor from them , this from a a live dvd recorded in 2019. This is very good representation of what septic flesh have been doing on record for the last few albums (they do usually play with a backing track rather than live orchestra ) but have recorded all orchestral parts on at least the last three albums with Prague symphony orchestra ( no keyboard recreation like some bands ) so this show is a great live representation of there musics :-)
Absolutely love this band, saw them live 3 times, just awesome. That being said, Spiros, the lead singer is an awesome guy he does all the artwork for the band as well as designed the band's logo. The Guitarist, Christos, is Spiros's younger brother and composes all the orchestration for the band. Also fun fact, this band was started as a performance art piece but took on a life of its own and here we are. Also SepticFlesh are considered a "Symphonic Death Metal" band though sometimes labelled as a "Atmospheric Death Metal" band. Most of their later work contains heavy use of orchestrations and other symphonic elements.
Yes! These guys are one of the greatest Greek bands! Their last few albums have all been recorded with a full orchestra and choir! They are all of supreme quality. Awwwwwright!
Man, check out their album Titan. They did two arrangements, one was a ‘normal’ orchestra backed metal version, and at the end of the album are versions fully transposed and rearranged for orchestra only. Very impressive work!

If you enjoyed breaking this down you’d most certainly would be interested in the journey Dimmu Borgir - Gateways - live-Forces of the Northern Night would take you on
Super glad you checked out Septicflesh! I can second most of the recommendations for more songs of theirs in these comments, but something I _haven't_ seen that I would recommend from them is to check out one of their non-metal tracks. They have a few that skip the guitars/drum kit/vocals/electric bass and they're quite good. In the event you don't think they'd be good for a video, they're still worth checking out, so maybe as a casual listen: "Mythos", "Martyr of Truth", and "Dark Testament" are the main ones I would recommend. If you were to only listen to one of those three, I'd suggest "Dark Testament", as "Martyr of Truth" is quite long at 11:37 and "Mythos" is much older, having come out all the way back in 1994, thus not being as representative of their modern work. If I could recommend a different band, one of my long-time favorites is Sylosis, a thrash/death metal band from Reading, England. They do excellent work, and in particular are notable for the incredible riff writing of Josh Middleton, who does the vocals and co-lead guitar, as well as the fact that, until their latest album, all their songs used guitars tuned to E Standard, which is highly unusual in modern metal. I struggle to recommend just a single song from them, so instead, I'll give you a song from each album and you can pick the one you think is the most interesting :) Album - Song - Year - Notes, if any - link Cycle of Suffering - I Sever - 2020 - Only song I've listed tuned to D Standard instead of E, includes my favorite vocal performance in this list - ua-cam.com/video/dZDd-MwuvcM/v-deo.html Dormant Heart - Servitude - 2015 - Manages to get some interesting perception of speed despite its tempo - the part of the song that feels slowest is at quarter=128 and the rest is at quarter=126 - ua-cam.com/video/9_RT0G4wWKg/v-deo.html Monolith - A Dying Vine - 2012 - Probably the song I've listened to the most times on this list, main riff is blazing fast and the vocals that accompany it are very quick as well, which is all the more impressive when considering that they're done by the same person at the same time. Symphony and metal fuses together so incredibly great! So many amazing bands and songs, definitely one of my favorite genres. You should check out An Ember's Arc by Be'lakor some day, melodic death metal which is very beautiful in it's own way.
Wowww I didnt think septicflesh was gonna be on your channel ... Amazing!! Love your decomposition channel , big fan here from Montreal !!! There drummer is krimh Kerim hes an awsome drummer plenty of videos of him playing on youtube
That face you're making in the thumbnail is killing me LMAO. I'll watch when I'm not planning on sleeping more, and guaranteed I stay to the end, like always. Love your videos, you've kept me sane in a time of great insanity. Thank you. The language of music speaks to, and from, my soul. You translate it impeccably.
Septicflesh are one of my favourite bands. one of their best songs in my opinion is "Prometheus" and another great one is "portrait of a headless man". I also love this live they did there, I believe it was in Mexico. defiantly worth listening to the this live dvd.
Septicflesh! So epic. Another track of theirs I would recommend is "Enemy of Truth." Also, another group I would HIGHLY recommend is Fleshgod Apocalypse. Italian group, composes a great balance of technical death metal and classical music.
I'd love to see him react to one of their songs off of either King or Valeno (Say, Sugar) and then immediately listen to the orchestral version of that song!
I really enjoyed your review of this. I hope you check out more Septicflesh, I recommend Persepolis from the Communion album released in 2008, it has a wonderfully epic and dark orchestral opening and is favourite with their fans
I highly recommend 'Prototype' from the same live set. It has big brass rips and they also bring out a child choir too. It is very cool. Well worth a watch.
So cool you did this Geebz, and I think you figured what is all about SEPTIC FLESH pretty well out. This band in his recent time is all about a truly Symphonic approach of Death Metal (still keeping some Gothic elements though & close to some Black Metal ones as well). It is a indeed a show with an orchestra, but they do use an orchestra for their albums too & you have to check a studio song which will indeed confirm your guess about it. I suggest songs like "Lovecraft's Death", "Communion", "Persepolis", "Dante"s Inferno", "The Vampire from Nazareth", "Oceans of Grey", "Our Church, below the Sea" but also these (with a different approach, less orchestral) a bit older albums : "Virtues of the Beast", "The Ophidian Wheel", "Phallic Litanies", "Shamanic Rite" (mixing Gothic Metal with Dead Can Dance in a way).
Been loving this channel. And it's really fun to see him react to songs like this. Makes me want to dust off some Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth to find more of that big orchestra meets black metal kind of sound. I really wanted to drop a line to suggest he give something like The Seatbelts' TANK! a try. I think it'd be great to see him analyze something like that.
I've been following your channel for a while now bubba, and I gotta say I fucking love what you're doing. I have 2 suggestions for your consideration. Acid Bath: Jezebel Death: Voice of the soul Both are masterpieces in their respective niches and most definitely worth your time
I went to my bro’s house on Saturday night and we got drunk in his garage and watched this whole concert! It was bad ass! Bring on some Byzantine Geebz!
I am really pleased to see you genuinely enjoying and being impressed by some extreme metal. I am not a Septic Flesh fan, but damn this band is talented and crafts awesome compositions. You should definitely check more extreme metal, some bands despite their violence, compose beautiful pieces of music. Otherwise when you have time check: Dir En Grey - Vinushka it would be awesome!
Seeing that orchestra and the violins just made me think of Unexpect and Diablo Swing Orchestra, they are two of my most favourite bands. I have heard no other bands sound like them, they are just so unique. I remember getting into them and being like, this is the type of music I want to listen to. Plus Unexpect are from my hometown! Suggestions: Unexpect - The Quantum Symphony Diablo Swing Orchestra - Vodoo Mon Amour Beyond Creation - Omnipresent Perception or Earthborn Evolution Borknagar - Up North Black Crown Initiate - Invitation Native Construct - Mute Cyborg Octopus - Discobrain! Destrage - Symphony of the Ego Fleshgod Apocalypse - Cold as Perfection Zeal & Ardor - Devil is Fine Allegaeon - Proponents for Sentience - The Extermination Anaal Nathrak - Forward Damned Spirit Dance - Raven Gorod - Birds of Sulphur Inferi - Behold the Bearer of Light or The Ancients Of Shattered Thrones Sludge - Putrid Fairytale Son of Aurelius - Attack on Prague Vildhjarta - Dagger
If I remember correctly, on their newest album (Codex Omega) the orchestra was written first. And I believe it to be the best orchestral extreme metal I've ever heard. I'd recommend Enemy of Truth or Portrait of a Headless Man. But if you are enjoy Stravinskij like me, you're in for an amazing ride with Babel's Gate! That orchestration always floors me.
Another band I started listening to because of your reacts! I highly recommend Promethus and Martyr off of a couple of their newer albums, and if you're looking for some orchestra (forgive terminology here, my music education was a long time ago), Marytr of Truth and Dogma of Promethus are arrangements of some of the orchestral passages from the songs on their respective albums. They are also worth a listen!
Since you liked Periphery so much with their versatility, I'd also suggest looking at Coheed & Cambria. They also have a crazy range to their sound, and one of my favorite things about C&C's vocalist Claudio is something you mentioned in another video to the effect of "sometimes the most memorable lyrics aren't necessarily words." In my opinion, C&C would also be a great fit for the metal/rock opera tangent you were talking about for a ton of reasons. Specifically for C&C, I'd say It Walks Among Us (for something recent), or The Lying Lies & Dirty Secrets of Miss Erica Court (for something classic, in my opinion).
My first hearing if Septicflesh was their song Dante’s Inferno. I loved the orchestral elements, especially one bit that sounds like it came from the soundtrack of Bram Stokers Dracula. You’ll know it when you hear it. It gives you chicken skin for sure!
A god among men. I would also recommend to anyone to listen to Communion front to back. Changed my life.
@@Livingkin I don't think they've released a bad album. Codex Omega truly blew me away.
@@mitchellwade150 for the longest time the Great Mass was my favorite, but Codex Omega absoulutly melted my face even more.
So Sumerian Daemons was the band first step into orchestration. Still my favorite album, before to Communion.
He doesn't just orchestrate the electric songs, he composes the music parts as a whole,
Their album Communion is amazing if you're interested in delving deeper. Sangreal from that album is a masterpiece.
Oh, yeah, I bet he'd enjoy the weird accenting in the intro.
It actually kind of saddens me that you don't ever really see them play it live.

Okay, 'cause you're already there:
Dimmu Borgir - Mourning Palace (Live, Forces of the Northern Lights)
I was about to recommend this too
That would be so epic! One of my favorites from Dimmu.

Dimmu borgir would be amazing. Mourning palace is a great track but progenies of the great apocalypse is my favorite track
Honestly, Progenies of the Great Apocalypse (same live sho, forces of the nrothern lights) is better IMO.

Symphony and metal fuses together so incredibly great! So many amazing bands and songs, definitely one of my favorite genres. You should check out An Ember's Arc by Be'lakor some day, melodic death metal which is very beautiful in it's own way.
U gotta react to Septicflesh Martyr or Anubis dude!
Hey from NZ Geebz
Wowww I didnt think septicflesh was gonna be on your channel ... Amazing!! Love your decomposition channel , big fan here from Montreal !!! There drummer is krimh Kerim hes an awsome drummer plenty of videos of him playing on youtube
That face you're making in the thumbnail is killing me LMAO. I'll watch when I'm not planning on sleeping more, and guaranteed I stay to the end, like always. Love your videos, you've kept me sane in a time of great insanity. Thank you. The language of music speaks to, and from, my soul. You translate it impeccably.
Love Audioslave!!! Excited to see the vid when it re-uploads.
yes please do more Septicflesh!!
Satyricon - Mother North Live At The Opera !!
Septicflesh are one of my favourite bands. one of their best songs in my opinion is "Prometheus" and another great one is "portrait of a headless man".
I also love this live they did there, I believe it was in Mexico. defiantly worth listening to the this live dvd.
First time im hearing this, damn :o they are great! Thank you for the vid key :D
subscribed to you because of this reaction video and I love how you do it! keep it up!
The great mass of death is one of my favorite albuns of all times. Even off camera, check it out. Definitely is a one of a kind band.
Fantastic the parts with the choir are totally magical
Septicflesh! So epic. Another track of theirs I would recommend is "Enemy of Truth." Also, another group I would HIGHLY recommend is Fleshgod Apocalypse. Italian group, composes a great balance of technical death metal and classical music.
I can also only recommend
The Fool is one of my favorite songs
I'd love to see him react to one of their songs off of either King or Valeno (Say, Sugar) and then immediately listen to the orchestral version of that song!
They are a wonderful live band. The interactivity and their walls of sound are incredible
Alright friend Geebz ^^ please do some more... wanted to suggest something
but realized I mostly just want your content to continue
Great stuff man
Such an amazing and fun band to see live. Get a chance, dont pass it up!
Very cool to see your take on Septicflesh as I love this band. I hope to see your views on Eluvietie "rebirth" some time soon.
Would love see Trivium’s “Kirisute Gomen” and/or “Shogun”
Why did it take me a year to find this...sheesh. glad you did it, could you check out something like Dark Art from them ?
Check out Fleshgod Apocalypse's The Violation for something also with a symphonic backbone, but even more extreme than this.
Geebz it’s time to look into Fleshgod Apocalypse after this. I saw both bands tour together. What a sick show!!
I've been following your channel for a while now bubba, and I gotta say I fucking love what you're doing. I have 2 suggestions for your consideration.
Acid Bath: Jezebel
Death: Voice of the soul
Both are masterpieces in their respective niches and most definitely worth your time
I went to my bro’s house on Saturday night and we got drunk in his garage and watched this whole concert! It was bad ass!
Bring on some Byzantine Geebz!
The Chillest Reactor/Reactioner/Reactionist/whatever on UA-cam! 😁
Really surprised you haven't reacted to Fleshgod Apolcalypse yet. Check out The Fool or The Violation. Great representation of what they're like.
I've never heard of this band before. I have to admit it was pretty awesome, much better than I expected based on the name and image.
Your trip with Septiflesh will be epic, heavy and dark my friend.
I absolutely love Septicflesh, have you seen the drummer's footwork? Krimh has his own channel x
My favorite concert and band. 🤘
The vampire from nazareth is also really cool from the same live
Billian - Third Impact (Homage to Evangelon)
Totally mindblowing cybersounds for the future.
Suggestions:
Unexpect - The Quantum Symphony
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Vodoo Mon Amour
Beyond Creation - Omnipresent Perception or Earthborn Evolution
Borknagar - Up North
Black Crown Initiate - Invitation
Native Construct - Mute
Cyborg Octopus - Discobrain!
Destrage - Symphony of the Ego
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Cold as Perfection
Zeal & Ardor - Devil is Fine
Allegaeon - Proponents for Sentience - The Extermination
Anaal Nathrak - Forward
Damned Spirit Dance - Raven
Gorod - Birds of Sulphur
Inferi - Behold the Bearer of Light or The Ancients Of Shattered Thrones
Sludge - Putrid Fairytale
Son of Aurelius - Attack on Prague
Vildhjarta - Dagger
For orchestral Metal check out Fleshgod Apocalypse. Neither element is compromised.
de los mejores conciertos ke he visto.. lo escucho cada mañana en mi trayecto.. no tiene desperdicio..
Im willing to bet you would love their song Anubis
My first hearing if Septicflesh was their song Dante’s Inferno. I loved the orchestral elements, especially one bit that sounds like it came from the soundtrack of Bram Stokers Dracula. You’ll know it when you hear it. It gives you chicken skin for sure!
I just watched the live version. Was very excited to see a choir as well as an orchestra!
You're getting so close, one day I'd love to see Infant Annihilator "Swinacologist"
Death - Flesh and the Power it Holds
Would love to see you react to Code Orange or Knocked Loose, get your take on my idea of heavy.
