Generally when UA-cam recommends me videos that have less than a 1000 views, it's either completely off or hits my interests in a niche way that just make me weirdly happy. I am very glad to report that this one is the latter. I especially enjoyed the I turning into the butterfly, but overall there were very many nice touches in this video.
naming this song "This song is not a metaphor" Is a metaphor for songs and other works of art in which fans try to impose deeper meaning. The genius of Brian David Gilbert knows no bounds
@@mystaee2914 Basically, in poetry and songs and stuff, critics (and english teachers) try to find hidden meanings, and assume that the song/poem is not meant to be taken at face value. For instance, a critic might say that a song about a chicken crossing a road is actually a song about the competitive "rat race" of the corporate world, when it, in fact, is just a song about a chicken crossing the road.
See, Brian is pulling what is known as a "Bookman's bluff". In this case, the song is not in fact about caterpillars, but is instead a metaphor for kirby.
Basically,BDG had a series on polygon called unraveled in which he theorised that kirby is a metaphor. Direct Quote The bookmans bluff is something where the aidience says hey that doesnt make sense then the author says well it actually does make sense if you thinl about it as a metaphor.
@@MBrosTVee69420lol thanks for reminding me to re-watch the unraveled series again, totally respect why bdg was done with it but I hope he knows how much joy it regularly brings us
VERY VERY well done wow! When bdg says like to make it clear this song is not a metaphor you have the metaphorical butterfly spread its wings to reveal more of the lyrics but the bits of the obscured lyrics you can see on either side of the word metaphor are the "M" and "R" from his previous "Make it cleaR" which pair nicely again with the word metaphor itself. Powerful stuff😂
this is so cute and well made! the style kinda reminds me of the very hungry caterpillar, idk if that was intentional or not but awesome if it is! love this, excellent work :)
So the metaphor of this song is that caterpillars, and other small creatures alike, are fragile and need to be treated with respect because they are essential to the ecosystem even if we don’t know it, and sometimes they can be neat like caterpillars or bees, who all have pretty unique traits and characteristics. Nice metaphor! Really enjoyed this song
Even though this song isnt a metaphor, its really easy to interpret it as one. Especially for children, how you grew up having to rely on other people for information, and how ignorance is bliss. and how quickly the bullet of adulting can really hit. It could *really* be a metaphor if it wanted to be.
People reappear caterpillars because their metamorphosis is GREAT for metaphors. I, however, respect the complexity of the process of metamorphosis, and how they have managed to develop such a process.
This song indeed is not a metaphor. But that doesn't mean it lacks any meaning. The meaning is quite clear: the caterpillar is inferior to the singer. Why is he inferior? Well, he names a lot of things. What do they all have in common? Cognition. A caterpillar lacks the intelligence and awareness needed, not only to take part in civilized society, but even to be conscious at all of what will happen to it later on during its lifecycle. The singer, and indeed humanity as a whole, does possess these qualities, and as a result he can do a great number of things that a caterpillar, and indeed the whole of the rest of the animal kingdom, wouldn't even be able to conceive of. Including having control of your own destiny; where the caterpillar might metamorphosize into something more, and will always become that same thing, no matter what it might want, contrariwise the singer chooses for himself what he will become. Perhaps crucially, said profession involves controlling the destiny of other creatures like the caterpillar, who have no control of their own. This song, in the end, is a celebration of what makes humanity superior to the beasts. Many who are too clever by half would miss this clear meaning of it in favor of diverting themselves by picking apart some nonexistent allegorical subtext, interpreting the caterpillar and the singer as this or that, but Brian David Gilbert wisely headed off this foolishness by telling them straight that there is none to find; that the caterpillar is simply a caterpillar, and the singer is simply a man. Starting from that point, everything else can be extrapolated with ease.
the original author may have not wanted to have it be a metaphor, but you can interpret anything you want! you can give everything your own meaning, as long as you don't force that meaning onto others and pretend it was the intended meaning when really it's just what you think.

When the text forms a question mark and then the dot turns into the "do", man that scratched my brain good!
This reminds me of the book where the caterpillar eats and eats and it gets so big from eating. I loved that book when I was younger.

Everyone tried to come up with a metaphor the first time they listened to this
- I guess i'm just too tough to cry
- Just today you were crying about caterpillars
- They don't have any idea of what they're doing!
koalas are objectively more clueless than caterpillars
i honestly love the little “i’d like to see a caterpillar do that :)” at the end xD
and it still is literally a metaphor about growing up! Such genious

this was amazing!!!! my favorite part was when "do the have any clue" turned into a question mark that was great!
I think this is a metaphor for the fact that the author/songwriter/singer doesn’t know what to do or what he will do with his life.
Guys we need to make an animation of a caterpillar singing this to prove them wrong it’ll be funny
Its been confirmed, i am a caterpillar 🐛
I KEEP THINKING THIS IS A METAPHOR FOR SOMETHING BUT ITS NOT
This song is an obvious metaphor about things that seem useless. Its almost painful how clear it is.

Idk how I got here but that thing where the question mark bottom turned into the word “do” was super satisfying
