I came from downtown SD in the gas lamp district with dozens of high end restaurants in walking distance from my condo. Honestly I have found plenty of good places within a 10min drive in MV, RSM, and Laguna Hills. Its really not a con unless you want to eat out somewhere new every night of the week.
