To those who think I'm arrogant or ungrateful because I turned down Google, that's like saying someone's arrogant or ungrateful because they rejected a $9/hr job over a $10/hr one. I worked at a restaurant washing dishes at $10/hr for nearly a year in the past (when I was a student), but never have I once thought of myself as arrogant or ungrateful for ditching another restaurant that offered $9/hour. There's nothing wrong with valuing yourselves guys. Lastly, I just want to say that I value your thoughts and you're free to speculate, but you can't generalize who I am from a 6-minute video alone. Congrats! Google is known for pretty lowball offers due to prestige and all the benefits it provides (and tbh there are a lot). There's even an internal joke where the excuse for the lowball is "we pay 5-10% of the market" lmao. But overall I think it boils down to the team (at least for me). If the difference between the offers is around 20%, I would choose one which has better WLB and more interesting work. I hope you enjoy your new endeavor! P.S. Was that for L4? I believe that would be high band of L4 or low band for L5, latter is more likely though.
It looks out of band for L4 seattle according to levels. Seems more like an L5, but sad that was their final number after negotiations. Can pull 500 as senior at many other places.
I just got a similar offer for L4 (besides a much lower sign on bonus) and was also working at Microsoft before. I can understand why PK rejected the offer. Google def downleveled him to L4 instead of L5. Hope you are thriving in your new company PK!
Note that this is just upfront pay at the point of signing. His year to year salary would be the base salary + annual bonus (usually you get a bit less than the suggested bonus in my exp) The rest is just a one time fee and the RSUs are only given if you work for many years. So his salary would be more or less 200k. Which is certainly good but certainly not amazing for the industry standard
To the doubters out there. It takes tremendous effort to be so skilled that you can reject offers this lucrative so don't judge this based on your experience just because you're still new and haven't seen shit yet. I'm Only six months into learning but I already realize this field is so f wide and the needed skills just to be a Jr developer are increasing daily. Props to you my dude 😎.
And that's why Google can get away with : low leveling (disrespecting candidate), lying (front loading), and lowballing (much lower offers). If you don't have any external offers, Google will do anything to ensure you get screwed over. And if you have competing offers, you still get screwed over but less. Compensation wise, the entire company is a joke. But it is very good at selling its image to the public as this 'dream place'. Internally, people who are experienced cannot get promoted after senior. And get blocked in their career growth. Still a great place though. But can definitely pay much below market. Also, Google hires almost everyone now (exaggerating) relative to the past. Big company ==> Many hires ==> Hiring bar falls. Same for all tech firms.
@@2RosarioVampire Why is front loading a lie? I would have loved a front loaded offer when I started. Also, Google does not do "anything to ensure you get screwed over" otherwise retention would be awful, which it's not. They do what they can get away with, and clearly that's a lot because life there is fucking awesome. Sure, getting to staff is really hard, and promo in general is slower than other companies, but IMO that's equally balanced by the rest of the package. If you need that promo, you can probably interview at L+1 elsewhere if you've been performing at L+1 anyway.

interesting. May I know how the equity is calculated? is it a set amount based on the proportion of your base salary? or by the number of stocks given?
This is why I never count anything but base salary as compensation. Anything that is conditional, optional, or inaccessible is NOT REAL. Companies do this to pad salary numbers and deceive candidates, and sadly, it often works. This was really a $172,000 job offer, which is fine if you don't live in Seattle.

WHAT laptop IS that pk im looking for one and my dad told me not to buy the MacBook air so I'm stuck AND I NEED YOUR Help the laptop is for coding and school stuff
When I was interviewing for Google this January, it took 7 days from the moment I got thumbs up from the hiring committee to get team-matched with my manager (also met with 3 more managers within that time period). Either I got lucky or Google's team matching is not that bad
@H. B. I joined a startup after college and got an opportunity to design and develop a backend system from scratch. That way I learned a lot and had large impact on the final product. Plus, I conducted over 20 interviews myself, so I knew what interviewers usually look for. To join Google, I just submitted my resume online and got an email from recruiter.
Lol we both quit Microsoft at the same time and given that you previously worked at Amazon, you’re likely joining Meta, who is known for sweeping the floor with Google offers. If so, I just joined Meta myself this week! Good luck!
I think for most of the big tech companies, it is well known that you need to have competing offers in order to get higher offer. For Google, there are actual conditions on how the comp team can offer you what package under what conditions. My recruiter told me very clear about these at the beginning. It is not that they tried to lowball you. Giving them the screenshot of your competing offer is pretty common.
I find it frustrating how companies try and give you 10s of thousands of dollars in RSUs. I understand they are trying to mitigate their risk, but most of the time, their RSUs are worthless.
yes I don't get it. Does it cost companies less to give 200k RSU than to give 200k cash? Surely, companies can't just print stock shares like the government printing cash?
but in this case we're talking about companies like Google... where RSU is pretty good, and I believe they only have a 2 yr vesting period, also pretty good. What's actually funny or silly or even a possibly a mistake on PK's part... if the stock went and stays down... that's the better time to acquire it... share's will go up (unless I'm missing something else how they work) - it's the people that already have shares that want to liquidate now that would have a worse profit.
@@jeffpeng1118 No but cash is more versatile for them, even more so with rising rates. It's also a way to handcuff valuable employees a bit to where they might be taking quite a pay cut to switch jobs before the RSUs fully vest.
Hey Pirate King got a question for you. I got back into community college for CS last fall as an undergrad at 28, 29 now, and knocking out the pre reqs plus an intro to cs class before transferring to uni hopefully sooner rather than later. Been a bit overwhelmed with understanding the best course of action at the moment, what would you consider most important during this stage? Im being told internships during the summer are the most important for experience, yet at the same time, taking summer classes will allow me to graduate sooner. Having gone through all this, in retrospect, what do think is most important here? Im at the age where I know to be patient, however I'd like to optimize my time as best as one can. Any tips would be welcome, love the channel and respect the time you spend making these videos. Thanks.
Having graduated a semester early in 3.5 years for my university, I can assure you that getting internships is significantly more important than graduating early. Graduating sooner will help you cut tuition cost, but doing internships will not only help you land better jobs but also pay for your tuition.

He has the luxury to decline offer from Google because he is in a better position in life. An average joe would NEVER do this!
An average joe wouldnt get an offer from google to begin with.
I interviewed at Facebook, Amazon, and then Meta. The interview process for software engineers is very difficult. I did 2 rounds of interviews and it included live coding, designing a system, and algorithm solving. Now I work at DoorDash making $250,000 total compensation. I did fail the other ones. Lol
Does anyone know what the name of the youtube video is called that is about Equity (RSU)? Im curious and wanted to watch it but its not linked in the video.

When I was interviewing for Google this January, it took 7 days from the moment I got thumbs up from the hiring committee to get team-matched with my manager (also met with 3 more managers within that time period). Either I got lucky or Google's team matching is not that bad
I think you got lucky
@@Aripoma very lucky.
@Billy No
@@AKMax96 how was the coding interview for you?
Congrats bro. and wish you good luck
Lol we both quit Microsoft at the same time and given that you previously worked at Amazon, you’re likely joining Meta, who is known for sweeping the floor with Google offers. If so, I just joined Meta myself this week! Good luck!
Two weeks of leetcode? Tf takes me days to do even 1 question
PK is def going to amazon. we increase our pay by 1.5x. for senior, he would be probably getting around 450k-600k.
no way, if you watch his earlier videos, he left amazon for microsoft, and now he quit microsoft to join amazon? hahaha

Really don’t understand these flex videos on turning jobs down like this and posting about….
It’s a chinese thing, you won’t get it.
Using my headset and the moment he said "Hey Google". My phone's Google assistant popped up.
They did low ball because the first offer was lower than the market rate
I wonder how many voice assistants he triggered for people watching the video every time he said "Hey Google".
I rejected a $360k Google job offer | Software Engineer (as a millionaire)
Good for you!
Holy s****😮.. That's alot of stock... But good choice man😎👍💯
me watching this from a third world country where getting a job that pays you enought to feed you family is an accomplisment.
Same story.
Turned down Facebook and Microsoft offers for Google 😂
But before this, I’ve had 100s of rejections

I find it frustrating how companies try and give you 10s of thousands of dollars in RSUs. I understand they are trying to mitigate their risk, but most of the time, their RSUs are worthless.
yes I don't get it. Does it cost companies less to give 200k RSU than to give 200k cash? Surely, companies can't just print stock shares like the government printing cash?
I think companies want to keep the base salary low.
but in this case we're talking about companies like Google... where RSU is pretty good, and I believe they only have a 2 yr vesting period, also pretty good.
@@jeffpeng1118 I think companies have to pay more tax if they pay you more in cash, share is taxfree for both the employee and the company (not sure)
They let go of their motto "Don't be evil"
@@PIRATEKINGDOM Noted, thanks for taking the time to confirm that for me.

Hello Pirate King, just been wondering what should I learn to become a great software engineer, I'm a fullstack web developer but i've always been thinking on how to be a software engineer. Thank you. Goodluck to your new company.
Full-stack web devs are considered SWEs in the US. Grind leetcode and get deeper understanding of DSAs and the questions that companies ask in general!

Hi PK, I’m a 41 year old architect in LA, is it too late for me to start programming by self taught? Any recommendations?
You can literally jump ship within a year of hard work and leetcoding 3Qs a day minimum.
It’s never too late i’ve seen people older who made career changes into swe. Check my videos on how to become a swe in 2022 + leetcode + resume etc

But why do you want to leave the architect field? I mean programming is a lot drier as well and not easy either

You must be skilled

There are always jobs available for good talented people. Pick someplace that you can see yourself working for a while. In the end a culture fit is worth more than some extra money.
Very good advice
I am just starting my coding journey I cant wait to see where it leads.
I would do the same. Just on principle. Google is a monopoly and is bad. One should avoid them at all cost.

I know those "Hey Google" phrases were on purpose lol.
For folks who are not in tech: 360k tc is like a high sde2 or low senior sde offer.
no. ur either trolling or ur extremely naive. maybe for the large tech MAANG companies, but those salaries are wayyy beyond the average software engineering salary in normal cities. look up the average across the US. its under 100k.
Wait, let me turn on my printer, ill fake me a $400k offer!!!
